The Confession

14:16, 26 October 2025

"I love you." "I know." "Say it back." "I love you."

The confession didn't happen with music playing. No candles. No perfect view of a glittering skyline.Just the steady hum of the air conditioner. The quiet tap of rain on a window. And two boys, no longer afraid of the truth.

---

It was 3:47 a.m. when Kole woke up.

The city was asleep but restless-sirens far away, a dog barking in another apartment, rain drumming against glass like it was trying to say something important.

He blinked into the dark.

Jackson wasn't next to him.

The other half of the bed was cold.

He sat up, rubbing the sleep from his eyes, panic trying to crawl up his throat. Not again, he thought. Not this.

But then he heard it. From the balcony.

Soft guitar strumming.

Off-key, maybe intentional. But unmistakably Jackson.

Kole padded barefoot toward the sliding glass door and pulled it open.

Jackson sat on the balcony floor in nothing but an old hoodie and pajama pants, the guitar balanced on his knee, his hair sticking out in all directions like he'd lost a fight with a pillow and didn't care.

Kole leaned against the doorframe. "You always play music when you can't sleep?"

Jackson didn't look up. Just kept strumming.

"No," he said quietly. "I only play when I feel something I can't name yet."

Kole stepped outside, the night air damp but not cold. He sat beside him.

They didn't speak for a minute.

Just the sound of chords that didn't quite go together but still made sense.

Finally, Jackson stopped playing.

He turned his head, looked at Kole.

"I've said a lot of things that weren't enough," Jackson said. "Avoided even more. Thought if I kept moving, maybe I wouldn't have to stop and look at what you actually mean to me."

Kole watched him.

Jackson's jaw clenched. His eyes flicked away, then back again. Like he was holding something sharp inside and didn't know how to bleed without cutting Kole too.

"I love you," Jackson said.

It landed in the space between them like a meteor.

Unavoidable.

Kole inhaled.

Jackson was still looking at him. This time, not like a celebrity. Not like a man afraid of himself.

Just like a person trying.

Trying so hard.

Kole said nothing.

Just leaned forward and kissed him-slow, searching. Not to shut him up. Not to reward him.

But because it was finally safe to.

When they pulled apart, Kole whispered, "You know I love you too, right?"

Jackson let out a shaky breath. "Say it."

Kole smiled. "You just said it first."

"I still need to hear it."

So Kole cupped Jackson's face and said it again.

"I love you."

Jackson closed his eyes like it physically hurt.

Then he opened them, and he was smiling-eyes damp, lips trembling.

"I didn't think I'd ever hear that for real."

"You've probably heard it a thousand times," Kole said. "From fans. From media."

"Exactly," Jackson whispered. "But not like this."

---

They went back to bed without speaking much more.

But they didn't fall asleep either.

They lay there, tangled in sheets and in each other, staring at the ceiling.

No sex.

No kissing, even.

Just breathing together.

Learning the rhythm of "I love you" in heartbeats.

Kole traced shapes on Jackson's chest. "You think it'll be different now?"

Jackson nodded. "Not out there. But in here, yeah."

"Do you want it to be public?"

Jackson was quiet. "Eventually. Maybe. But for now... just us."

Kole didn't argue.

He understood.

This was still new. Still raw. Still soft in places that hadn't healed all the way.

But it was real.

That was enough.

---

The next day, Jackson sent a text to his manager.

> I'm scrapping the album.Writing a new one.Real songs this time.

His manager called in under thirty seconds.

"You're what?"

Jackson just smiled, Kole asleep next to him. "Trust me."

---

Later, when Jackson sat at the piano in the studio and sang the first demo, he barely got the words out.

But when he looked up through the glass at Kole, watching from the control room-

He sang louder.

Clearer.

Like someone who had something worth losing.

Because now?

Now he did.
