Chapter 13: The Space Between Them

09:03, 27 May 2025

Noah didn't talk to anyone that night. He didn't join the usual group call. Didn't reply to Bonggu's messages. Didn't even open their group chat where Yejun was spamming memes and Hamin was complaining about finals. He sat on his balcony instead, legs propped up on the railing, fingers turning his phone over and over in his palm.He could still see it clearly.Bora, laughing.Eunho, sitting beside her, shoulder against hers like it belonged there. And her smile—bright, free—like Noah had never been the reason behind it in the first place. His thumb hovered over Bora's name in his contacts, but he didn't press it.He couldn't.Not tonight.

Bora lay in bed, staring at her ceiling, guilt gnawing at her ribs. She hadn't meant for Noah to see her with Eunho. She hadn't even realized he was there. She knew what it must've looked like. But that moment with Eunho... it had mattered. Because for the first time, she let someone see the storm inside her. And Eunho, loud and ridiculous as he was, hadn't judged her. He just stayed. And now... her thoughts kept circling back to Noah. How he looked that night she ran.How he called—over and over. How his voice cracked in the one voicemail she had finally dared to listen to."I know you're hurting, and I hate that I'm part of it. But please—just let me tell you the truth."She squeezed her eyes shut. She'd been so scared of hearing something that would shatter her. But now she was starting to wonder if she had shattered them both by not listening at all.

The next afternoon, Eunho found Noah sitting alone near the campus courtyard steps, earbuds in but not playing anything. He dropped next to him with his usual dramatic sigh. "You know, I'm pretty sure we all need therapy. Or maybe just matching jackets and a support group."Noah side-eyed him. "You done?""Not even close," Eunho grinned. But then his tone shifted, surprisingly serious. "You saw us, didn't you?"Noah didn't answer, which was enough.Eunho leaned forward, arms on his knees. "Nothing's going on, man. I'm not stepping in. I was just there for her when she needed someone to talk to."Noah exhaled slowly, jaw still clenched. "She smiled with you.""She can smile with you too. But not if you keep disappearing like you already lost her."That hit harder than Noah expected."I didn't do anything wrong," he said quietly. "But I still feel like I broke something."Eunho patted his back. "Then fix it. Look, Bora's scared. She feels things way deeper than she lets on, and it freaks her out.""I know," Noah whispered."Then show her you're not walking away. Not this time."

That evening, Bora sat at her desk, fingers hovering over her phone. One message. That's all it would take. But before she could type, a soft knock echoed at her front door. She froze. Then stood.Opened it slowly.Noah was there. Not smiling. Just... waiting."Hi," he said softly. "Can I talk to you?"Her eyes locked with his. Heart pounding. She hesitated—then stepped aside. And let him in.
