Chapter 13: Silver Promises

20:57, 23 January 2025

The streets of Seoul bustled with life as Hayoon and Ni-ki walked side by side, laughter spilling freely between them. The winter air nipped at their cheeks, but neither of them seemed to mind. Their fingers brushed occasionally, hidden in the folds of their coats, and every now and then, Ni-ki would pull her closer, their shoulders bumping as they shared quiet giggles.

"I don't know if I can walk into another store after the last one," Ni-ki joked, a grin pulling at his lips.

Hayoon glanced at him, her brown eyes sparkling with amusement. "You were the one who wanted to try on that ridiculous neon sweater," she teased.

Ni-ki gasped dramatically, clutching at his chest. "Excuse me! That sweater was revolutionary."

She laughed, the sound light and airy, and it made Ni-ki's chest feel warm despite the chill in the air. "It was hideous, Riki."

He chuckled, nudging her lightly with his elbow. "Fine, fine. Your turn to pick the next store. But if it's boring, I'm blaming you."

Hayoon scanned the street, her gaze settling on a quaint little boutique with soft lighting spilling through the windows. The display showcased cozy knitwear and delicate accessories, the kind that made her heart flutter.

"This one," she said, tugging lightly at his sleeve.

The boutique smelled faintly of lavender and vanilla, the soft hum of an acoustic playlist filling the space. Hayoon's fingers trailed along the racks of sweaters and cardigans, the textures soft and inviting. Ni-ki followed close behind, watching her with an amused smile as she held up various pieces to inspect them.

"This one's cute," she said, holding up a pale blue sweater adorned with tiny embroidered daisies.

Ni-ki tilted his head, pretending to study it. "Hmm... It would look cute on you," he said, flashing her a playful grin.

She rolled her eyes, but her cheeks flushed slightly. "I wasn't asking for your opinion."

"Sure you weren't," he teased, earning himself a playful swat on the arm.

After picking a few items to try on, Hayoon disappeared into the fitting room, leaving Ni-ki to wander around the store. When she emerged, she was wearing the blue sweater, its soft fabric draping perfectly over her frame.

"What do you think?" she asked, spinning slightly so he could see it from all angles.

Ni-ki's smile softened, his gaze lingering on her. "You look perfect," he said simply.

Her heart fluttered at his words, and she quickly ducked back into the fitting room to hide her reddening cheeks.

They visited store after store, each one offering a new adventure. At one, they tried on matching beanies, laughing as they posed in front of a mirror. At another, they found oversized hoodies that swallowed them whole, prompting a mini fashion show in the middle of the aisle.

By the time they stepped into a high-end menswear store, Hayoon's arms were full of bags, and her cheeks ached from smiling so much.

"Why are we here?" she asked as Ni-ki wandered over to a rack of suits.

"Because I've always wanted to try one of these," he said, pulling out a sleek black suit with subtle pinstripes.

Hayoon raised an eyebrow. "You've never worn a suit before?"

"Not one like this," he replied, already heading toward the fitting room.

She waited by the mirror, her fingers playing with the hem of her scarf as she watched him disappear behind the curtain. A few minutes later, he stepped out, and Hayoon's breath caught in her throat.

The suit fit him perfectly, accentuating his tall frame and sharp features. He adjusted the cuffs of the jacket before turning to her, a boyish grin on his face.

"Well?" he asked, holding his arms out slightly. "What do you think?"

Hayoon didn't reply immediately, her eyes taking in the way the fabric clung to his shoulders and tapered down his legs.

"You look... amazing," she finally said, her voice soft.

Ni-ki's grin widened. "Yeah?"

Instead of answering, Hayoon stepped closer, her hands reaching out to straighten his collar. Her fingers lingered for a moment before she tugged lightly, pulling him down to her level.

"You look more than amazing," she murmured, her lips brushing against his as she smiled.

Ni-ki froze for a second, caught off guard by her boldness, before melting into the kiss. His hands came up to rest gently on her waist, pulling her closer as their laughter mingled with the quiet music playing overhead.

When they pulled apart, Hayoon's cheeks were flushed, but her eyes were bright with happiness.

"You're dangerous," Ni-ki teased, his voice low as he looked at her with a smirk.

"You're the one who wore the suit," she shot back, her lips quirking up.

After leaving the store, they wandered into a small restaurant tucked away in a quiet corner of the city. The warm light spilling out onto the street drew them in, and soon they were seated in a cozy booth, sharing a plate of tteokbokki and laughing over nothing in particular.

At one point, Ni-ki disappeared briefly, leaving Hayoon to sip on her drink and scroll through her phone. When he returned, he was holding a small box, his expression sheepish.

"What's that?" Hayoon asked, her curiosity piqued.

Ni-ki slid the box across the table toward her. "Open it."

She lifted the lid carefully, revealing a delicate silver bracelet nestled inside. The simple design was accented with tiny charms shaped like stars, their surfaces catching the light in a way that made them glimmer.

"Ni-ki..." she whispered, her fingers tracing the cool metal. "It's beautiful."

"I saw it in the window earlier and thought of you," he said, rubbing the back of his neck. "Do you like it?"

"Like it? I love it," she said, her voice full of emotion.

He smiled, taking the bracelet from the box and slipping it onto her wrist. His fingers were gentle, brushing against her skin as he fastened the clasp.

"There," he said, leaning back to admire it. "Now you have something to remember today by."

Hayoon looked down at the bracelet, her heart swelling with affection. "Thank you," she said softly, meeting his gaze.

Ni-ki reached across the table, his fingers brushing against hers. "Anything for you."

By the time they returned to their respective dorms, the city had quieted, the streets bathed in the soft glow of streetlights. Hayoon stood outside her building, her bags weighing heavily on her arms, but her heart felt light.

"Goodnight," Ni-ki said, his voice warm as he leaned down to press a kiss to her forehead.

"Goodnight," she replied, her voice barely above a whisper.

As she watched him walk away, the silver bracelet on her wrist glinted faintly under the light, a quiet reminder of a day she would never forget.

As Hayoon returned to the dorm, she couldn't stop smiling. The memory of the day with Ni-ki replayed in her mind like a soft, sweet melody she never wanted to forget. From the way he laughed at her jokes to the warm weight of his hand in hers, everything felt like it had been taken straight out of a dream.

The dorm was quiet when she entered, her bags rustling softly as she set them down by the door. She took off her coat and shoes, her fingers brushing over the silver bracelet on her wrist. It still felt surreal to think it was hers. She turned it gently, watching how the tiny star charms shimmered in the dim light.

As she padded to her room, she found Minseo sitting on her bed, scrolling through her phone. Minseo looked up when Hayoon entered and immediately grinned.

"You're back," she said, her voice teasing. "How was your day, Hayoonie?"

Hayoon smiled shyly, setting her bag down beside her bed. "It was... nice," she said, trying to sound casual, though the warmth in her tone betrayed her.

Minseo arched a brow, sitting up straighter. "Just nice? Come on, spill it. You've been smiling like that all day."

Hayoon bit her lip, hesitating for a moment before sitting down beside her. "We just... went shopping," she said softly, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear.

Minseo's grin widened. "Shopping? Was that all?"

"We ate together too," Hayoon admitted, her cheeks flushing.

"And?" Minseo pressed, leaning in closer. "Don't hold out on me!"

Hayoon sighed, a small laugh escaping her lips. "He... bought me this," she said, holding up her wrist to show the bracelet.

Minseo gasped, grabbing her hand to examine it. "Hayoon! This is so pretty! Did he just—out of nowhere—buy this for you?"

Hayoon nodded, her voice soft. "He said it reminded him of me."

Minseo flopped back onto the bed dramatically, clutching her chest. "That's so romantic! I can't believe this is your life. Do you know how many people would kill to be in your shoes?"

Hayoon laughed, lying back beside her. "I feel so happy around him, Minseo. It's like... everything just feels easy, like it's okay to be myself."

Minseo turned her head to look at her, a genuine smile softening her features. "I'm glad, Hayoon. You deserve this. Just be careful, okay?"

Hayoon nodded, though a small pang of guilt flickered in her chest. "I will," she said softly, her fingers absentmindedly brushing the bracelet.

They lay there for a while, giggling over the day and whispering about little details. Minseo teased her relentlessly about how Ni-ki must've looked at her while trying on the suit, and Hayoon laughed so hard she had to cover her face with a pillow to muffle the sound.

"And you kissed him after he asked if it looked good on him?" Minseo exclaimed, eyes wide with disbelief and excitement.

Hayoon nodded shyly, her cheeks flushed. "I don't know what came over me! It just... felt right in the moment."

Minseo groaned dramatically, rolling onto her side. "You're living a drama. This is so unfair. Do you know how boring my life is in comparison?"

Hayoon laughed, pushing her lightly. "Stop it! It's not that exciting."

"Oh, it is," Minseo retorted, sitting up. "You're just too humble to admit it." She glanced at the clock on Hayoon's nightstand and let out a sigh. "Alright, I should let you sleep. You have practice tomorrow."

Hayoon nodded, watching Minseo leave the room. The moment she was alone, she sank into her bed, her body finally relaxing after the long day. She stared at the ceiling, her thoughts drifting back to Ni-ki. She could still see the way he smiled at her, the warmth in his eyes, and the sound of his laughter echoing in her ears.

Her phone buzzed beside her, and she reached for it, expecting a simple notification. Instead, her breath hitched as her screen lit up. It was a post, and the thumbnail alone sent a chill through her.

It was a photo of her and Ni-ki from earlier that day.

Her hands trembled as she opened the post, her heart racing. The images were clear: one showed them walking down the street, fingers intertwined. Another showed Ni-ki with his arms around her in the boutique, their faces close as they laughed together. The last—and the one that made her stomach drop—was of her pulling him by the collar of his suit and kissing him.

The caption read: "Ni-ki and a mystery girl spotted together! Who is she?"

Hayoon's mind raced as she scrolled through the comments.

"That's Hayoon from Éclipsé, right?!""Are they dating?!""Why is she holding his hand? Doesn't she know idols aren't supposed to date?""This better be for a collab or something."

She felt sick as she read the words, her chest tightening with panic. She hadn't even noticed someone taking pictures—how could this have happened?

Her phone buzzed again, this time with a text.

Ni-ki: "Hey, are you okay? I just saw it."

She stared at the message, her vision blurring as tears filled her eyes. She didn't know how to reply. Everything had felt so perfect just hours ago, and now it felt like the world was crashing down around her.

Before she could respond, there was a soft knock at her door.

"Hayoon?" Minseo's voice was gentle, and when she entered the room, her expression immediately changed when she saw Hayoon's face. "What's wrong?"

Hayoon handed her the phone without a word, letting her see the post. Minseo's face hardened as she read through the comments.

"This is ridiculous," Minseo said firmly, sitting beside her. "They have no right to invade your privacy like this."

"But they did," Hayoon whispered, her voice shaky. "And now everyone knows. What if this ruins everything, Minseo? What if—"

"Hey," Minseo cut her off, placing a comforting hand on her shoulder. "We'll figure this out, okay? You're not alone in this."

Hayoon nodded, though her chest still felt heavy. Minseo stayed with her until she calmed down, offering words of reassurance and reminding her that she had people who cared about her.

After Minseo left, Hayoon lay in bed, staring at her phone. She typed out a reply to Ni-ki, her fingers hesitating over the screen before she hit send.

Hayoon: "I don't know what to do."

A reply came almost instantly.

Ni-ki: "It's going to be okay. We'll talk tomorrow, I promise. Don't worry about anything tonight. Just get some rest."

Hayoon clutched her phone to her chest, her tears falling silently as she replayed his words in her mind. She wasn't sure how they would handle this, but she trusted him.

As her eyes fluttered closed, she thought about the way he had smiled at her earlier, the warmth of his hand in hers, and the silver bracelet that still glinted faintly on her wrist. Despite everything, a part of her still held on to the happiness she had felt that day, refusing to let it go.
