A Day Just for Us

21:29, 1 July 2025

Saturday mornings had become Charlotte's favorite time to spend with Tim. It wasn't that she didn't love her time with Lucy — she did, of course. But there was something special about when Tim would come by early, just for the two of them, to do something fun.

This time, they were heading to the local zoo. Charlotte had been talking about it for weeks, begging Lucy to let her bring Tim along.

"Why not make it a special day?" Lucy had said, smiling at Tim over her coffee. "Give her a day of just the two of you. You don't have to make any big promises, but it'll mean a lot to her."

And so here they were, Tim holding Charlotte's hand as they walked through the gates, her eyes wide with excitement.

"First stop, the giraffes!" Charlotte announced, tugging him toward the exhibit.

Tim laughed, following her at a comfortable pace. "Lead the way, I'm just the chauffeur today."

They spent the next few hours roaming the zoo, chatting about animals, making jokes, and Tim carefully listening to all of Charlotte's random, wonderful thoughts about each animal. He'd always thought of kids as somewhat unpredictable — but Charlotte was different. She was curious, sharp, and incredibly open.

At one point, as they sat on a bench near the penguin exhibit, Charlotte looked up at Tim with wide, thoughtful eyes.

"Do you like it here?" she asked, her voice quiet.

Tim smiled. "Yeah. I do. It's nice being here with you."

Charlotte kicked her feet back and forth, her eyes on the penguins. "I think I'm starting to like you a lot."

Tim's chest tightened. "I like you too, Charlotte. A lot."

She turned her head to look at him, her eyes soft but serious. "You're gonna stay, right?"

Tim froze for a moment. The question was simple, innocent, but it carried so much weight. This wasn't just about staying for the day. This was about staying for good, staying in their lives — hers and Lucy's.

Tim took a deep breath. "I want to stay, Charlotte. I'm not going anywhere."

Charlotte nodded slowly, satisfied. "Good. You and Mom seem happy when you're together. I like it. I like when we're all together."

Tim's heart swelled. He leaned in a little, making sure his voice was gentle. "I like it too. A lot."

There was a quiet moment between them, the sounds of the zoo fading into the background as Tim let her words settle.

"You're kind of like... the family I always wanted," Charlotte added softly.

Tim's throat tightened, and he couldn't stop the smile that spread across his face. "You've got a good heart, Charlotte."

Charlotte beamed, then jumped up from the bench, grabbing his hand and pulling him toward the lion exhibit. "Come on, we can see the lions now! They're my second favorite animal, right after giraffes."

Tim followed her, his mind still lingering on her words. The family I always wanted. He knew, in that moment, that this wasn't just a "let's see how it goes" kind of situation. Charlotte had already let him in — and that meant something deeper than he could put into words.

Scene: After the Outing

When they returned home later that afternoon, Charlotte was bouncing with energy, telling

Lucy all about the day — from the giraffes to the penguins, and, of course, the lions.

Tim sat back, listening quietly, letting Charlotte steal the spotlight. He didn't mind. He'd seen the way Charlotte had looked at him earlier, and it told him all he needed to know: she was ready for him to be a permanent part of their world.

After Charlotte ran upstairs to get a snack, Tim turned to Lucy, who had been watching them with a small, thoughtful smile.

"She's a bright kid," Tim said quietly.

Lucy nodded, her gaze soft. "She is. I never imagined things would be this... easy, I guess."

Tim raised an eyebrow. "Easy?"

Lucy smiled, a hint of disbelief in her voice. "Not easy in the way of no challenges. But easy in the way of feeling like it's right. That we're doing the right thing. Not just with Charlotte, but with us."

Tim let the silence hang between them for a moment before he spoke, his voice steady but full of emotion. "I'm not going anywhere, Lucy. And I know I can't just walk in and act like everything will magically fall into place. But I'm here. For you. For Charlotte."

Lucy's heart skipped. She hadn't expected those words — not like that. She reached for his hand, her voice soft but filled with sincerity. "I'm glad you're here."

Tim smiled, a quiet confidence building in his chest. "Me too."
