Six Years Later

14:24, 13 May 2025

The sound of small footsteps thudded through the house, followed by a burst of giggles and the frantic shuffle of socks on hardwood floors."Charlotte Marie Chen! If you leave your snack on the couch again, I swear—!"Lucy stopped mid-scold, unable to keep the smile from tugging at her lips.Charlotte peeked around the corner with her wild blonde curls flopping into her eyes, a mischievous grin stretching across her face. "Sorry, Mommy!"She was five now. All legs and curiosity, stubbornness and sweetness. She looked so much like Tim it used to hurt. But now... now it was just part of who she was.Lucy stood in her small but warm two-bedroom apartment in Burbank, dressed in a fitted navy blazer and heels she still didn't love walking in, coffee in one hand and Charlotte's backpack in the other. Six years ago, she was a barista and part-time cleaner. Now, she worked in public relations for a boutique firm downtown — juggling clients, deadlines, and a daughter who always seemed to lose one shoe minutes before they had to leave.Life wasn't perfect. But it was hers. And it was good.

Angela's House — Later That AfternoonAngela's house had grown louder in six years — thanks to Jack, now five and in kindergarten with Charlotte, and Emmy, barely one and always trying to climb something.Lucy sat at the kitchen island, feeding Emmy little pieces of banana while Jack and Charlotte played in the backyard. The sun filtered in through the windows, casting that perfect, honeyed late-afternoon glow over everything."You tired or just pretending to be awake?" Angela asked, pouring two glasses of sparkling water."Both," Lucy smirked. "I had a 9 a.m. meeting with a tech client who thinks hashtags are government tracking tools."Angela snorted. "Sounds about right."She set a drink in front of Lucy and leaned on the counter. Her face was still beautiful, still sharp, with just a few more tired lines around her eyes. But her energy hadn't dimmed. If anything, motherhood had made her fiercer. They sat in companionable silence for a moment, Emmy babbling between them, fingers sticky with banana."I saw Celina last week," Angela said casually.Lucy looked up."Oh yeah?""She's doing good. She mentioned you guys haven't hung out much lately.""Yeah," Lucy said, brushing a curl from her face. "Life, I guess. Work, Charlotte... I think we just drifted."Angela nodded but didn't push.Because she knew. That part of Lucy's life — the time of paparazzi flashes, fake relationships, and real heartbreak — it had quietly closed. Tim hadn't reached out. Lucy had stopped trying. The silence had become the truth. And she'd moved on.Sort of.

Later That NightLucy sat on Charlotte's bed, brushing through her daughter's curls as she hummed a lullaby. Charlotte's head slowly sunk into the pillow, her thumb slipping into her mouth."Mommy?" she whispered."Yeah, baby?""Do I look like you?"Lucy paused. She looked down at her daughter — those crystal blue eyes, the same kind of half-smile Tim used to wear, even the way her nose crinkled when she was thinking too hard."No," Lucy whispered. "You look like someone I once loved very much."Charlotte blinked sleepily. "Oh. Okay."She closed her eyes.Lucy kissed her forehead, turned off the lamp, and walked quietly out of the room. And for a moment, she stood in the hallway, hand pressed to her chest. She was happy. She was safe. She was whole. But some stories — even when they end — still echo. And some... weren't finished yet.
