13:36, 12 September 2022Joe could tell all morning that Elle was in a good mood because her family would be at the stadium today. All morning she was already bouncing around the house with a huge grin, doing countless pirouettes as she packed her bag and smooching him half to death as he was the first to leave the house.
He also heard her laughing at the preparations at the stadium before he even entered the room where the ATs were taping the players and noted with a grin that she was dancing around the couch where T.B. was currently lying.
The next time he saw her was after he had been standing on the grass with the players for a few minutes warming up and she had entered the court with the ATs. Unobtrusively, she gave him a smile before turning to Nick, murmuring something to him, and then walking with him toward the tiers.
Joe could only watch briefly as Nick and she greeted her family, who stood at the edge of the bleachers, about three feet above their heads. He recognized Ian in his little Bengals jersey and had to grin. Nick quickly snapped a photo of the family before they waved goodbye and went back to work.
It started off very well. The Bengals got pretty close to the Steelers' end zone on just a few plays and everyone was very much in the game. It was the second play. They had 7 yards to go to get to the Steelers 1 yard line.
"White 80" Joe's voice rang through the cheers of the fans. "Set hut"
Immediately the ball landed in Joe's hands and Elle held her breath outside as she crossed her fingers and watched spellbound as Joe took a few steps backward to survey the situation and thus his receiving stations.
Elle could already see the sack coming when one of the Steelers' defenders was suddenly just an arm's length away from Joe, but suddenly Joe deftly spun out of the danger zone and took off running.
Three opponents were around him as he got closer to the end zone. Just then one of them threw himself at Joe with full force, but it was already too late. Joe bounced his entire body on the ground, but he was in the end zone, the ball still in his hands.
"Touchdown!" Elle shouted happily, almost jumping over Nick with joy, who caught her just in the nick of time. "Slow down, kiddo. Or you'll hurt your shoulder even more" he grinned at her. "don't worry, it's back in full working order" Elle assured him, demonstrating that statement by circling her arm.
The offense had arrived at the bench by now and Elle really had to resist the inner feeling to run to Joe, jump into his arms and congratulate him for his first rushing touchdown this year.
Especially when he lifted his head and gave her a triumphant smile. She quickly grabbed one of the granola bars and hoped eating would keep her body from doing that for now.
The Bengals continued to dominate the game. The Steelers' drive ended within a minute and a half with an interception by Eli Apple, who returned the ball inside the Steelers' five.
But even though there were so few yards between the Bengals and their second touchdown in the first quarter, they failed to get into the end zone and went up by only 3 points on Evan's field goal.
This time the Steelers' drive also went better and they marched forward to the Bengals' 22 yard line, but the defense held firm and did not allow a yard on first two downs. On third down, however, the ball flew dangerously close to the Bengals' end zone, where Eli easily tackled Claypool and denied the Steelers a touchdown.
The field goal sat, however. The Bengals got the ball again, the final minute of the first quarter began and the offense fought back to get on the Steelers' side before the first quarter ended 3-10.
It was just 45 seconds before the Bengals' next touchdown was on the scoreboard. On second down, Joe tricked the defense, getting the ball to Ja'Marr, who with blocking help from his teammates, pumped his way past 10 yards.
It took just one more down for Joe to get the ball, run back to the 40 yard line and see Tee, who was just covered by a man heading into the end zone. Joe took a chance and threw with all his power.
The ball whizzed through the air, flying right into the back of his opponent, making it a breeze for Tee to fish the ball out of the air and land safely with it on his feet as his opponent flew to the ground.
TOUCHDOWN FOR THE BENGALS
Immediately, half the team was at Tee's side celebrating the touchdown before he and Joe also gleefully high-fived.
The Steelers' drive yielded no points, so the ball went back to the Bengals.
Elle had to grin when she saw that Joe, after a throw to Tee, had brought the team back to the Steelers' side of the field, always doing the same thing. He got the ball, passed it to Joe Mixon, who pumped through and brought his team closer to the end zone with each down.
They were only a minimal distance from the end zone on second down when, of course, Joe whipped out the move again. He got the ball, gave it to Joe Mixon, and he dashed through the large number of players in front of him.
A big pile of players lying on top of each other was suddenly at the top of the end zone. C.J. threw up his hands to show the referees that it had been a touchdown and the referee's whistle sounded and he too raised his hands. It was true. The Bengals had another touchdown.
Again the Steelers drive didn't last long and remained scoreless and the ball came back to Joe after less than a minute and a very good block with a fumble. This time, however, things did not go so well. Although the Bengals got within field goal range, there was still plenty of time on the clock. Unfortunately the drive ended with an interception and a 19 yard return.
But as it was the whole game, the Steelers did not keep the ball for long. The first throw on first down flew right into the arms of Mike Hilton, who without much trouble and flew by only one opponent, got the ball into the Steelers' end zone for a touchdown.
The stadium was freaking out. Elle was freaking out. Everyone was freaking out. There were 30 seconds left before the Bengals would go into halftime with a lead of 31 points to 3!
The third quarter was almost boring unlike the first two. The Bengals sacked Big Ben. They ended a drive with an interception. They almost lost the ball after a fumble that Joe Mixon just recovered and only scored on a field goal.
But the fourth quarter started right back with a Bengals touchdown. They were at the Steelers 20 yard line, Joe got the ball, tricked the defense into pretending to give the ball to Joe Mixon, but kept it and ran the other way.
He found Tee, who had no opponents around him except for one man, and passed him the ball. With a catch and a quick sprint, Tee made his way to the end zone, was picked off by an opponent, but ended up with the ball in the zone and scored the next touchdown for the Bengals.
Joe put his fists in the air and immediately ran off the side of the field, straight at Nick and Elle, who hugged each other joyfully. "Way to go" Nick patted Joe on the helmet with satisfaction. "Keep it up baby" Elle grinned at him and patted his shoulder.
"I plan to, babe. Next one's for you" Joe winked at her before jogging on, getting high-fives from his teammates.
A minute later, the Bengals were again just a yard from the end zone. It happened pretty quickly. First down, ball to Joe, ball to Joe Mixon, through the defense, sixth Bengals touchdown. Immediately the offense broke out into their little choreo, which Elle also joined on the sideline.
"That was my touchdown" she grinned at Nick before pulling him back into an overjoyed hug. "Your family really picked a good game" Nick replied with a grin.
Nothing more than a Steelers touchdown happened and the game ended 41 for the Bengals, 10 for the Steelers. Elle was all fired up as she changed clothes after cleaning up the sideline and waited for Joe in the dressing room aisles.
As usual, he was one of the last ones out, which is why she pulled all the players who came out before him into an overjoyed hug and congratulated them on the game.
When Joe finally came out of the locker room with damp hair and his backpack shouldered, she ran up to him and immediately threw herself into his arms. "Wohoo, babe, I've been thrown down enough today" he greeted her with a grin and wrapped his arms around her.
"I've been waiting for you" she mumbled against his chest "Sorry. I had to give another interview" he apologized before putting his hand on her chin to turn her head so he could kiss her.
"I'm so proud of you" she beamed at him as they walked down the hallway. "It was a very good game today"
"Thank you babe. I'm glad I could show your family such a good game" he smiled at her. "What do you say we celebrate a little more with everyone tonight?"
