user22 jack don't know how lucky he is user02 cole burner account jackharlow liked this comment!

@jackmanharlow sent you $2,000 for 'just because'.

sierra looks at the cash app notification with a surprised smile on her face. it's not that she didn't expect him to do it, but that she really didn't expect that much. she doesn't ask him for money ever, and when she does it's usually as a joke and he does it but the amount ranges. before she started doing clinicals and working at the hospital, she once complained that she was broke and he sent her $200. another time, he sent her $5 just to be funny.

she dials up his number and puts it on speaker phone as she scrolls through the comments on her instagram post. "what's up, si?" jacks voice rings through the speaker a few seconds later, making her stop her scrolling.

"thanks for the money, jack," she says, playful edge to her voice.

"of course."

"but that's it?" sierra asks, biting her thumbnail. it's quiet between the two of them before they both start laughing.

"aight. hold on," he says. "how was your day, baby?" jack asks as he sends her more money.

"better now," she jokes. "but it was fine, i start finals next week so deja and jas are coming over to study." sierra says, letting out a breath. this is it—the end of her college career. she'd been imaging her graduation for years, and now that it's here she can't really believe it. four years flew by like it was nothing.

"i'm proud of you, girl," jack says. sierra smiles and curls up into herself on the couch.

"thank you. i miss you, jack," sierra sighs, resting her head on the arm of the couch. he's been in california doing festivals and shows for the last week and a half, going on two weeks, and she's been bored and alone most of the time. face timing isn't always enough.

"i know, baby. i miss you too, but i'll be home in a few days," he says.

"so? i want you here now," she says, sighing dramatically. jack laughs and she smiles at the sound.

"i know, i know. but i gotta make this money so i can keep spending it on you," jack replies. "also, what do you want for your birthday? i for your graduation gift, but deadass i don't know what to get you for your birthday." he adds.

sierra shrugs and then remembers he can't see her and says, "i don't know."

"bro, come on. whats one thing you want?" he asks.

"i don't know!" what both of them know is that sierra will probably end up buying half of her gifts for herself anyway. it's easier for her to just shop for herself because she will always know what she wants when it's in front of her.

"when you get socks i don't want to hear it then," jack says. sierra laughs and holds the phone closer to her.

"i don't care," she says. jack snorts on the other line, and she knows that he's probably rolling his eyes. he's a good gift giver when it's spontaneous, the same way she could tell you what she wants on a normal day, but not on christmas or her birthday.

jack wracks his brain for possible ideas. "you said you wanted a dog, right?" he asks, remembering her dog sitting her sisters dog a few months ago, and how she generally likes animals.

"like a year ago, but yeah. maybe, i dont really know. it has to be small a girl," sierra replies. she needs a dog that's more of a companion who gets her, and is basically like her. a dog that doesn't need to go on mile long walks and is okay with being mostly indoors.

"i can work woth that," he says. sierra looks at her clock on the wall and sighs. "what?"

"jas and deja are about to be here—i gotta go, babe," she says.

"alright, si. good luck studying, i know you'll do fine," sierra smiles at his words. he's always supported her education, and admired how she put it before everything. it inspired him to work hard at his own dreams, because of how she worked at her own.

just as she opens her mouth to thank him and hang up, he says, "i love you." it makes her stop and close her jaw, startled by it. after they said it to each other at the diner, it was said scarcely since. instead, it was shown through their touches and words other than 'i love you'. it's not that they don't love each other—they do—but 'love' isn't an accurate word to describe how either of them feels about each other. their connection is deeper, stronger than love alone. something that cant and won't fade.

"thank you, jack. i love you, i'll call you later," sierra replies, a small smile on her face. they say goodbye and hang up. she sets her phone down on the couch cushions next to her and rests her head on the back of the couch and thinks about the next few hours.

she has a tight study session laid out for the three of them: study for 50 minutes, and then take a ten minute break and do it all over again. there is a 45 minute break in there for eating after their fourth round studying, and then it's back to the books. she wrote it down on a small whiteboard and has it lying flat on her dining room table.

a knock sounds at her front door and she jumps off her couch and heads to the front. she opens the front door to reveal her two best friends in sweats and their backpacks, both looking as undetermined as she felt. "i'm starting to think college isn't worth it," jasmine says, stepping into the foyer, followed by deja.

"i head that," sierra grumbles, rubbing her forehead.

"dont even joke like that, because we're so close to getting the fuck out," deja says, always being the optimistic one out of the three. "let's get this shit done with, though." she adds, taking a seat at the dining table. sierra and jasmine join her and jasmine gets the timer set up.

they get our their notebooks and jasmine makes eye contact with both of them before pressing start and getting their study session going.

jack browses the cases of rings, rubbing his chin at every design. some are corny and childish—heart shaped promise rings that he might've gotten for a girl in high school, or for her when they first started dating because it's what he could afford. the others are too formal, too wedding ring-ish.

"you 'bout to propose, or what?" urban asks, coming up behind him with a bracelet in his hands.

jack shakes his head. "nah. is that for deja?" he questions, nodding at the diamond charm bracelet in his friends hand. urban and deja's rendezvous didnt end in miami. they continued to see each other—mostly in secret and at night—when they returned to atlanta. sierra and jasmine dont know about the two of them because deja is the type of person to tell everyone about her relationship once they're finally married. she has to make sure they're the one, or else she'll break up in private too. besides, she's never dated a white guy either, and is trying not to make it a 'thing'.

urban nods. "for graduation," he says. it's a cable-linked silver charm bracelet with a diamond heart, her birthstone (sapphire), a diamond star, and hello kitty because she's obsessed. "but be real. you proposing, or what?"

jack rolls his eyes. "i just said no, urb."

"then why are we looking at rings?"

jack shrugs, at a loss for words. he doesn't really know why they're looking at rings—he just walked over to the case and has been browsing their selection for fifteen minutes. "i don't know, ive gotten her every piece of jewelry except a ring," he says with a shrug, but even he knows that's not the reason. it's the truth, but not why he's looking.

urban snorts. "alright, man," he says, but it sounds like 'whatever'. "see one you like?"

jack shakes his head. he doesn't want it to seem like it's a proposal, because it's not. he just wants to show her that he loves her, if his words aren't always enough.

"what about that?" urban asks, pointing to a round, pointed diamond ring surrounded by a pearl and a smaller diamond on either side.

jack shakes his head. "too formal. we're not getting married."

this goes on for another ten minutes before jack sighs and runs a hand through his hair. "bro, lets go," he sighs, annoyed and frustrated because he can't find her anything.

"hold on—what about this one?" urban asks. jack rolls his eyes, swearing to himself that they've seen every single ring in the store. but he walks over to his friend, his hands stuffed in his pockets. "look."

jack peers down at the ring urban points at. its a thick, silver band covered by multiple tiny emerald diamonds and a few regular diamonds. it's simple, and it's her birthstone. jack chews on the inside of his cheek. "dope, right?" urban asks. jack nods and calls the jeweler over.

"can i look at this?" he asks, pointing at the ring. the jeweler takes it out of the case and hands it to jack. he turns it over in his hands, running his fingers over the jewels. it's not something that screams marriage or corny, which he appreciates. it's simple and intentional, and he knows she could probably wear it at the hospital because it won't tear her gloves. "i'll take it." jack says decidedly after a beat.

the jeweler smiles and takes the ring back before putting it in a black velvet box. the three of them walk over to the register and pay for the items and then jack and urban walk out to the car.

"thanks, man," jack says as they get into his car.

"no problem, G. i told you i had good taste," urban replies. jack chuckles and pulls out of the parking lot. "why a ring? and be honest." urban prods.

jack can only let out an airy laugh. "you're one nosey motherfucker, man," he says, glancing over at his friend. "but... i don't know, i just love her. i'm not ready for marriage, but i want that forever thing with her, man. i don't know how she's gonna take it, or what imma say to her when i give it to her on her birthday, but she's gonna know." he says, gripping onto the steering wheel tightly.

"damn. you got me tearing up," urban says, fake sniffling.

"fuck off," jack mumbles, an embarrassed smileon his face. he doesn't talk about sierra in that light with anyone other than sierra herself, or urban because he gets it. he knows the real, even if he was wary about them getting back together in the beginning.

they come to a red light and jack glances at the clock; 5:30, which means it's 8:30 in georgia. he quickly pulls out his phone and his fingers start flying across the screen at record speed.

jack: hey

jack: i love you

he drops his phone in his lap, not expecting an answer because he knows she's busy. except his phone buzzes seconds later.

sierra: are u ok?

sierra: but i love you too. ❤️🥺

jack snorts and quickly texts her back as the light changes.

jack: i'm good

jack: i just love you

sierra: whipped 😭
