Chapter 8: Before You Ride A Dragon, You Have To Tame It

Astrid walks up to her friends while the two best buds stay hidden in the trees.

"Aye, there ye are. What took ye so long?" asks Gobber.

"While, I was just walking around when I found someone and something. But when they come out, don't hurt him." Everyone was curious to what she was up to and why they would hurt 'him'.

Guessing that was they signal, they walk out of the trees. All eyes are focused on Hiccup.

"Who's tha'?" asks Gobber.

"It's... Hiccup?" says Fishlgs.

Hiccup nods like 'Duh!' They all run up to him but Toothless growls and they all jump.

"Night Fury!" says Gobber

"Can I touch it?" asks Tuffnut. Ruffnut punches her brother., which causes him to fall to the ground.

"It's not... an it. This is Toothless." says Hiccup.

"Hiccup, ye got a lot of explaining to do." says Gobber.

"Yeah I now... i do. Okay so Gobber, do... you remember when... you went out... to help the village from... the dragons... when I was still... in the workshop?" Gobber nods. "So after you... left I went... to go hit... a dragon and I... ended up hitting Toothless. So when I... said that I actually hit... a Night Fury, I wasn't... lying."

"Oh, sorry lad." says Gobber.

"It's okay. So... when I got home, I snuck... off to the forest... and I found... Toothless wrapped... in the rope and I... tried to kill him... but when I looked... in his eyes, I saw... myself. He looked as frightened... as me. so I cut... the rope and pounced on me... and roared in my face. When I got... home, my... dad said he signed... me up for dragon training... and I said that I... won't and can't... kill a dragon. The argument... seemed pretty much... one sided."

"Wait,so let me get this straight. You got a dragon down, you had a sword, and you cut the ropes? Crazy." thanks a lot Snotlout.

"Yes but I had a... dagger."

"Oh by the way, here. I found this in the woods." Astrid handed Hiccup his dagger and he put it in a pocket that was in his new armor.

"Why didn't you tell your dad you didn't want to be in Dragon Training?' asked Astrid

"Because, my whole... life was my dad ignoring... everything I said. I tried to tell him... that I woundn't harm... a dragon but like... always, I was ignored."

"So anyway. Everyday... after training, I would go to... the woods, and I... would try to somehow... bond with Toothless..."

"Why'd you name him Toothless?" asked Tuffnut.

Hiccup looks at Toothless and he gives them a gummy smile.

"I could have sworn he had..." started Fishlegs.

Toothless's teeth come out and everyone jumps back.

"Teeth." finished Fishlegs.

"That was my... reaction.But after Training ended... on the first day, I went to the... woods and I say Toothless... trying to fly away... but I realized that... when I shot him down, his left tailfin... burned off. So he was... kinda stuck in... that place. So I made... him new one and... he can only fly... with a rider or... the tailfin won't work. So I eventually... got to touch Toothless. But the day... of the final... training day came.... and I won, I felt like... I betrayed everyone... because I wasn't a... a Viking. I was a scrawn... boy who was afraid... of hurting a dragon. I tamed a dragon... and people kill... dragons. So I had to... leave. I couldn't risk anyone... finding Toothless. It seemed as though... he was the only... one who cared for... me. But for all these... years, I wanted to... kill a dragon and everyone knew..., but if I stayed... and tried to... show everyone how... misunderstood the dragons... were, my life would... have been even worse... then it already... was."

"And it's... not just Toothless... who could be... introuble, it is... all the... dragons."

"Wha' yer mean?"

"I mean that... the day that me... and Toothless left, he... flew me to their... island. There Is something... there on their... island. We hid... on a cliff and... a Gronkle came a spit... up a small fish. he was just... flying there... for a minute when... a dragon can up and ate it whole."

"Whole?" asks Fishlegs.

"Yea. Me and... Toothless were sitting... there for a minute... and we left before it saw us." Hiccup lied. They were almost eaten alive. But he doesn't want them to worry anymore then they are. But if were to tell his dad, he would tell them all the truth including almost being dinner for a enormous dragon.

"Well, why don't we go to the island and kill the dragon? Problem solved right?" Hiccup looked at Snotlout for a minute before he spoke up again but a weak voice: "Right?"

"The dragon Is... huge. It is a big as a... mountain. You may think... that it is over exaggerating..., but I am not lying." Snotlout looked scared for a moment.

"Are you going to come back to Berk?" asked Astrid trying to change the subject..

"Uh..." stuttered Hiccup.

"Come on! You have to! Everyone has been looking for you. You dad has been worried sick about you! We have been worried sick about you..." Astrid wanted to say one more sentence but she doesn't want to do anything crazy nor stupid.

"There right lad." said Gobber.

"If I would... consider coming... back, what about... Toothless? I can't just... abandon him. He needs me. I need him. And if I... bring him to... Berk, what are... the chances of my... dad listening to... me about... Toothless not... hurting anyone?"

"If your dad doesn't listen, then it's his lose. If you come back, we will help protect Toothless." said Astrid.

"But, I will help on one condition." Says Tuffnut.

"And what... would... that be?" asks Hiccup

"I want a dragon."

"Me too." says Ruffnut.

Everyone kept saying that they want a dragon, even Gobber.

"Fine." I say. "But before... you get to ride a... dragon, you have to... tame it."
