7 years later

I fell sloppily back into my desk chair, exhausted. I had never thought that desk work would be so tiring. You wouldn't think of it being an energy consuming chore, but it had proved itself hard enough. By now my head throbbed like a bass and my fingers ached like old gears. Typing for five hours straight was definitely not my forte.

Seeing the time of seven o'clock printed in the bottom right corner of the computer screen, I decided to pack up and head home. I slapped the laptop shut and slipped it into my bag - which had earned about few snide remarks about looking to be a school bag - along with  my phone and keys.

After sorting out the files on my desk, I shoved some into my second draw and placed the others in two separate yellow folders. Slipping a bag strap over my shoulder, I picked up the folders and started off.

As I walked past my desk, I glimpsed at the nameplate sitting upon it. Ebony Grayson. It was a new nameplate, the wedding of my dreams only occurring three months ago.

I had surprisingly settled on wearing a white dress, which Dick had assured me as we stood at the front of the church, that I looked beautiful in. I had to admit he looked quite dashing himself; dressed in a tailor made tuxedo, with his raven hair swished off to the side.

M'gann had been over the moon, of course, when I announced to her and the other girls on the team that Dick proposed to me on a date took on a Gotham cliff; where he gave me my first mask. Though I can still remember the whole lot of them screeching with questions and excitement. Even Rachel, who was usually as calm as still water.

I smiled at the memories of my big day as I walked down the hallways; ones that so long ago I had hidden and ran through mischievously. Coming to the door, I slowed my footsteps in approach, finally stopping in front of it. I could remember peeking through the blurred glass. In my mind, that had been the act that had triggered the major to my life.

I knocked tiredly on the glass, earning a gruff, "come in," from the man inside.

Twisting the door knob I pushed open the door and stepped into the office. Commissioner James Gordon sat in the leather chair behind a dark wooden desk that could've been the size of Texas.

To say he was shocked when I revealed my enthusiasm to be a detective could be classed as a major understatement. But after some time and thought - and perhaps Barbara had put in a few convincing words - Gordon had buckled and taken me on as his partner. Though being Commissioner, he did have a lot more authority.

I was glad though, that in only a few weeks with the job Gordon had discarded any previous dislike and bad intention towards me; coming to have to trust and even befriend me. I knew this, because of the awkward, short lived conversation he had started about it.

"Have you got the files?" Gordon asked. Always straight to the point. I admired that he didn't mess around.

"The ones on the recent alliance of Scarecrow and Penguin; I do." I replied, handing him the yellow folders I had prepared.

"Ah, thank you." He said, taking the folders. "Heading home now?"

"Yeah, I am a bit tired." I stated, readjusting the strap on my shoulder. "I'll see you on Monday then?"

"Monday." He confirmed, nodding with a worried frown. "You better take it easy this weekend Ebony."

"I will Jim." I said, smiling at his concern for my wellbeing as I started out the door.

"And say hello to Richard for me, won't you?" He asked.

"Will do." I called as I left the office.

The cool, night air hit me as I walked out. I'd found that you could never really get used to the sensation of the nightly Gotham wind. It always had this sensation that made you shiver whenever you stepped into it. But I crossed the icy road and slid into my car, escaping the harsh breeze.

It was a nice car. Dinah - as she had allowed me to now call her - had gifted it to me as a graduation present. With a midnight coloured paint job, an almost silent motor and smooth driving overall, it was the perfect little vehicle.

And better yet, it always got me home in a quick twenty minutes. I parked in the spaces provided underneath the apartment building, then made my way up in the elevator to the top floor.

I stuck my key into the door and turned it clockwise, opening it to reveal a very well furnished apartment. I closed the door behind me threw my keys onto the coffee table in the living area. It was the first space you encountered when you entered.

I shook the bag from my shoulder onto the couch and kicked my boots over to the side. Walking over to the the window, I brought my hand to my mouth to cover a yawn that had escaped my lips.

The window was one of the nicest parts of the apartment. It replaced the wall that would've been a part of the side of the building, and overlooked a small part of Gotham City. I liked the window.

The front door clicked shut behind me and I turned to see Dick walking into the apartment. As usual, he had replaced his business clothes for motorbike gear. His hair was messy and ruffled in an attractive way after having his helmet on; which he held under his arm.

He quickly took off his jacket and threw it over the back of the couch, then lazily placing his helmet on the table and waking over to me.

"Hello." He said, walking up behind me and wrapping his arms around my waist, resting his head on my shoulder.

"Hello." I replied airily to him.

"Hard day?"

"Jim had me doing the files on the recent collaboration of Penguin and Scarecrow." I told him. "He says hello by the way; Jim."

"Well, I'm glad that Jim's starting to get you in the office more. It just proves he knows how much you could get hurt."

I smiled. "He keeps on telling me to take it easy." I turned my head so I could see my husband. "You two worry way too much."

"Well it's my job to worry." He stroked his hand over my stomach. "It's my job to protect you, and the little person growing inside of you."

"Dick, I'm only three weeks along." I said.

"Yes, I know, but I'm still going to worry - no matter how far along you are." He assured me. "I don't want you, or our little Grayson getting hurt."

I spun around in his arms, slinging my own around his his neck. Leaning up to his tall frame, I kissed him softly, then pulled away and put my forehead against his.

"You're going to be a great dad." I told him.

Dick placed a small peck on my forehead. "You're going to make an even better mum."

"I love you Richard Grayson." I said.

"I love you more, Ebony Grayson."
