Chapter 2: Friday, 2nd February
04:01, 10 October 2014The room was white. The bed sheets were white. Even my clothes were white. This is what I has been greeted to when I fist woke up a few minutes ago, a white nightmare.
It looked like a hospital room, probably was. You know, like the ones that you see on the movies. There were a few spare beds with pulled up sheets on my left, but really nothing else. There were no doors, windows or any breaks in the wall, except for the door that was a bit further down to my right.
That was the only way I would be able to escape this place, this stupid prison. I didn't even know what I was doing here, let alone where 'here' was.
My life so far was ruined, my cover was blown. Why? Because they have seen my face. I didn't realise it at first, but I became aware of the absence of my hoodie that usually concealed my identity.
I couldn't use my powers either. I had tried many times to sink back into the bed and escape the handcuffs that bound my hands to the bed frame. No magic worked either, because I had tried that too.
I had been caught. I had finally been caught. Whoever did this is probably celebrating with a bottle of champagne and little biscuits right now, all because they had won. They had done the impossible and caught the shadow.
The door to my right slid open and they steeped in. One was dressed in black from head to toe, even a mask covering his face. No skin was visible on him except for his mouth and jaw, which the mask still exposed. The other had long blonde hair that fell behind her shoulders. She had no mask covering her face. That probably a downside for me though because I could see the hard expression that was plastered on her face. I knew who they were though, everyone does.
Batman and Black Canary.
Their gazes were both fixed on me as they neared my bed. I remained still, unmoving. Unspeaking.
"You're awake." Batman said. He stared at me waiting for a reply. When he realised that I wasn't going to give him one he sighed and looked at Canary for support. She stepped up to the bedside.
"Look, I know you're probably a little scared right now, but rest assured we aren't going to hurt you, nor will we ever. We just want to talk." She said. "And I know that you probably aren't going to speak to us, but that's okay. We aren't going to make you, but we are here just in case you might want to talk."
I stared at her confused. They, who I'm guessing is the Justice League, brought me here just to...talk? That couldn't be right. No, the Justice League had to have other plans for me. I was a criminal after all. It wouldn't be right I just let me get away with everything I have done.
Then I lifted up my head and did something that shocked the both of them, well I'm assuming it did.
I spoke.
"Why am I really here?" I asked. I looked at them. Batman had his usual blank face on and didn't let on that he was even slightly startled. Canary had a similar face. Although I could see through her facade, and she was defiantly surprised.
"Well, do you want the truth straight up?" Batman asked. I nodded.
"I have been searching for you for quite a while now. Every time I think I have you, you slip out of my grasp and I have to find your trail all over again. You have been causing trouble with the police for a long time now, but you never hurt anyone. That is what has everyone so confused." He said.
Confused. I smiled to myself, that's what I had been going for.
"This has been going on for five years now." He continued. "I know that night changed you, Ebony."
My breath caught in my throat. He knew my name, he knew what had happened. That night. That awful, horrible night. He knew about it, about all of it. How?
He was there.
Of course, he was the one that fought off Joker. The one that gave me enough time to get away from that terrible sight. The one that tried to save Zoella, but failed because she was already dead. The one that carried her body away from the scene, while I sat helpless in my shadow form.
All of the memories came rushing back to me at once. Tears started to well up in my eyes and all I could do was allow them to run down my face, staining my cheeks. I hadn't thought about this for five whole years. I blocked out the memory, burying it deep into my mind in hope that I would never have think about it again.
Canary rested her hand on top of mine. I didn't push it away like I normally would, I just left it there. It was quite comforting actually, to know that someone could actually see that you're life isn't as perfect as everyone else thinks it is.
"What are you going to do with me then?" I asked Batman in between sobs. This time it was Canary who spoke.
"We, as in the league, think that you would make a good addition to the team." She said.
"The team?"
"Yes, the team of our young superheroes that have banded together. We know about your past Ebony, this might do you some good. You will have friends, people that care about you."
"There has only ever been one person that has ever cared for me." I snuffled. This was the first time in a while I had actually had a conversation with someone. It was...nice.
"Ebony, we have been searching for you ever since that night. We want to help you, we honestly do. You're powers are extraordinary, and we would hate to see you go down the wrong path in using them. But for us to help you, we need you to let us." She finished.
"Okay." Was all that I said. Canary smiled. Had these people really been searching for me for that long? Shouldn't they be mad at me for breaking the law?
"Can I ask some questions?" I asked. Ha, ironic.
"Of course." Canary answered.
"Okay. One, what happened to my powers and my magic?" I asked.
Batman stood up. "We had Dr Fate put a restraining spell on those handcuffs. You're abilities will return to normal when they are taken off." He said.
Well that answered my next question, 'why was I in these handcuffs?'
"Okay. Two, how is this whole 'team' thing going to work?"
"We will introduce you as Black Canary's new apprentice, because that is what you will become. We will zeta to the cave, introduce you to the team and so on. You will have your own room in the cave, Miss Martian, Superboy, Aqualad and Zatanna will also be living there with you. Red Tornado is your den mother, Black Canary your trainer and I will brief you on any missions." Batman replied.
With that Batman walked out of the room. It was only me and Canary.
Wow, this was a lot of information to get in less than ten minutes, especially after you have been injected with whatever it is that they injected me with.
I laid my head back down on the pillow. This was going to be my life from now on.
"Ebony, I just want you to know, that if you ever need to talk I am right here."
I opened my eyes and smiled at Canary.
"Umm, well I need to ask some more questions." I said. She nodded, signalling me to continue.
"Can you not call me Ebony? I left that life behind a long time ago, I prefer Shadow now." I said.
She nodded. "Of course."
"Could you unlock the handcuffs?" I asked.
She laughed. "Sorry, I forgot about that." She said. Slipping a key out of her pocket she unlocked the cuffs. I exercised my sore wrist muscles and massaged them with the other hand.
I sat up and got out of bed. I stretched my legs, then my back.
"Another thing," I said."Do you have my clothes? My original black clothes?" I asked.
A fun smirk danced on her lips. "I do, but I also know of a place where we could get you some new ones..." She said.
My eyes lit up. "Really?" I asked cautiously.
Canary chuckled. "Of course, but you can wear your originals while we're going there if you want. I got the impression that you're not big on the colour white." She said.
I laughed slightly. "Um, yeah. That would be good, thanks."
"Alright then. Come on." She said, opening the door and walking out, gesturing me to do the same.
I walked over to the door and slid out. It closed behind me with a whoosh. I started to follow Canary down the hallway.
And not once did I look back.
