twenty one
06:22, 10 July 2025The library was quieter than usual on that late Saturday afternoon, the kind of stillness that softened even the loudest thoughts. Sunlight filtered through the tall windows, dust motes floating lazily in the beams.
Y/N tucked a stray lock of hair behind her ear as she settled at the corner table, already cluttered with notebooks, textbooks, and a laptop.
Seong-je arrived moments later, carrying a backpack and a large coffee. He spotted her and offered a small, tired smile.
"Hey," he said, setting the coffee down. "Ready to get this started?"
Y/N gave a short nod, eyes scanning the notes she had scribbled earlier. "Yeah. We've got to finish this project outline today if we want to stay ahead."
Seong-je pulled up a chair and settled in. The silence stretched, but it wasn't uncomfortable. It was the kind of quiet where both people just exist without pressure, which was rare between them.
As they began dividing tasks, Y/N's fingers tapped nervously on her notebook. She kept stealing glances at Seong-je, who was focused on the laptop screen, brows furrowed in concentration.
They'd worked together a few times before, but now, with so much history and so many unspoken things between them, it felt different.
Midway through the afternoon, Seong-je stretched and offered her a granola bar from his bag. "You want one?"
Y/N hesitated, then took it with a small smile. "Thanks."
The gesture, simple and unassuming, made the tension in her chest ease just a little.
They fell into a rhythm, voices low and collaborative, sharing ideas and occasional laughter over small mistakes or silly references. When Y/N accidentally knocked her water bottle, Seong-je caught it before it spilled, and they shared a brief, meaningful look.
Later, Jisoo popped in, a mischievous grin on her face. "Looks like you two are actually working," she teased.
Y/N rolled her eyes but couldn't hide her smile. Seong-je just smirked and shook his head.
As the sun dipped lower, the sky turning shades of pink and orange, the air between them softened. The project wasn't just a task anymore, it was a quiet bridge, tentative but promising.
When they finally packed up, Seong-je glanced at Y/N and said softly, "Thanks for doing this with me."
She met his eyes, feeling the old ache and something new intertwine. "Yeah. Me too."
Outside, the campus buzzed faintly with life, but for a moment, it felt like just the two of them, starting something that maybe, just maybe, could last.
The sky darkened further as they left the library, the air cooling with the evening breeze. The campus paths were quieter now, scattered with the occasional student hurrying home or to a weekend job. Seong-je and Y/N walked side by side, their footsteps softly echoing on the pavement.
Neither spoke at first, but the comfortable silence felt different from the last time they had walked together, less guarded, less burdened.
"So," Seong-je started, "I think your idea about breaking down the presentation into three sections is solid. It makes the whole thing easier to digest."
Y/N glanced at him, surprised by the sincerity in his voice. "Thanks. I wasn't sure if it was too much."
He smiled faintly. "No. It's smart."
They rounded a corner near the campus café, where the soft glow of string lights welcomed the few lingering patrons. The scent of roasted coffee beans and pastries drifted toward them, tempting.
"Want to grab something? My treat," Seong-je offered, a little hesitant.
Y/N bit her lip but nodded. "Sure, why not."
Inside the cozy café, they found a quiet table near the window. The warmth of the room felt good against the crisp night air outside. Orders placed, they settled in, the earlier work left behind for now.
Seong-je watched Y/N stir her tea slowly, fingers wrapped around the warm cup. "You've been quiet."
She shrugged, eyes downcast. "Just... thinking."
"About the project?"
She shook her head. "Not really."
He waited patiently, his gaze steady but gentle.
"I guess I'm thinking about... everything," she said at last, voice low. "The past. The project. Us."
Seong-je's throat tightened, but he didn't push.
Y/N's eyes flicked up, meeting his. "I'm sorry if I've been distant. I'm still trying to figure out how to be... around you."
"Yeah, me too," he admitted, voice soft. "I don't expect us to fix everything overnight."
Her lips twitched into a small smile. "That's good, because I'm terrible at overnight fixes."
They laughed quietly, the sound filling the small space between them like a balm.
As the night deepened, conversation grew easier. They shared stories about their childhood ambitions, the silly things they dreamed of doing before reality settled in.
Y/N confessed her secret love for cheesy romance novels, and Seong-je teased her mercilessly, which she pretended to hate but secretly enjoyed.
Time slipped away unnoticed until the café's closing announcement echoed softly.
Outside again, the air was cooler, stars beginning to twinkle faintly overhead.
Seong-je walked Y/N to her dorm building, the familiar path lined with trees casting long shadows.
At her door, they paused.
"I had a good time," Seong-je said quietly.
"Me too," Y/N replied, her voice barely above a whisper.
For a heartbeat, the world seemed to still.
Seong-je looked down, then back at her. "Maybe... we could do this again?"
Y/N's smile was small but real. "I'd like that."
They said goodnight, and as she slipped inside, Seong-je lingered a moment longer, a sense of hope stirring quietly in his chest.
