Chapter 8 : Seed of Destruction

15:23, 21 February 2025

Jungkook should have been prepared.

She should have guarded her heart better.

She should have known that whatever warmth the Crown Prince had shown her was fleeting.

She should have never let herself believe.

But the moment she heard the royal decree, it felt as if something inside her had shattered beyond repair.

The concubine ceremony was to take place in one month.

Lady Haeyon, the niece of Lady Seowon, was to be officially named as the Crown Prince’s concubine.

The announcement spread through the palace like wind, echoing in every corridor, whispered in every corner.

She should have known.

And yet, it hurt so much more than she had expected.

For almost a year of her marriage, Seokjin had only come to her three times.

Three times.

And since his return from the royal hunt, since the day he took her to his private library...

He had not come to her at all.

Not once.

She had waited.

Each night, she had waited without waiting, convincing herself she did not care.

That it did not matter.

That she had long accepted her place in his life.

But this?

This was the moment she realized...

She had hoped.

And hope was the cruelest thing of all.

As Lady Ji relayed the news, her voice careful yet unyielding, Jungkook simply sat in silence.

Her fingers curled over the fabric of her sleeves, her knuckles turning pale.

She did not weep. She did not tremble. She did not react.

But inside, she felt something break.

Seokjin had promised her nothing.

But he had also never told her to stop hoping.

And that, perhaps, was the greatest cruelty of all.

But then...

Seokjin arrived at her chamber that night. She could do nothing but stare in disbelief.

Before she could even process his arrival, his voice broke through the silence.

"I will be spending the night here," he said simply.

Jungkook saw the way Lady Ji and Lady Soo’s faces lit up with happiness.

She saw how they hurriedly moved to prepare the room, adjusting the bed, lighting the candles, ensuring everything was perfect.

They bowed deeply once they were finished, their smiles barely concealed.

And then, they left...

Leaving her alone with the Crown Prince.

Jungkook sat at the edge of the bed, uncertain.

She did not know what to say, what to do, what to expect.

Seokjin said nothing.

Instead, he moved to the bed, lying down with ease, as if this were the most natural thing in the world.

Then, he lifted his arm.

"Come here," he murmured.

Jungkook’s breath hitched.

She stared.

She had never seen him like this.

Relaxed. Open. Vulnerable.

Her mind screamed at her to guard her heart.

But her body moved on its own.

Slowly, carefully, she laid down beside him.

He pulled her close, guiding her head to rest on his arm.

His warmth surrounded her, unfamiliar yet comforting.

And then...

Silence.

No words.No explanations.No promises.

Just the sound of his slow, steady breathing.

Then...

A soft, faint snore.

Jungkook’s lips parted slightly.

He had…

Fallen asleep.

He had come to her chamber without a word, held her without a reason, and fallen asleep while holding her in his arms.

She did not understand any of it.

But as she listened to his breathing, as his warmth lulled her into quiet surrender...

She closed her eyes.

Somewhere in the depths of the night, between the haze of sleep and wakefulness, Jungkook felt the warmth of his embrace.

It was unfamiliar yet steady.

A presence she had never dared to long for.

And then...

Through the silence, she heard it.

A voice, low, quiet, barely above a whisper.

"Be strong, my wife."

Jungkook’s breath hitched.

Her lashes fluttered, but her body was too heavy with exhaustion to stir.

Had she imagined it?

Had it been a dream?

Before she could grasp onto the moment, sleep pulled her under once more.

When morning arrived, the space beside her was cold.

Jungkook’s eyes fluttered open, her fingers instinctively reaching toward the empty side of the bed.

He was gone.

For a brief, foolish moment, she thought perhaps it had all been a dream.

But then, the scent of his presence still lingered on the bedding, faint but undeniable.

Her chest tightened.

She sat up slowly, only to see Lady Ji already waiting for her.

The older woman smiled gently, bowing.

"Good morning, Your Highness. Your bath has been prepared."

Jungkook swallowed. "Where is he?"

Lady Ji’s smile did not falter, but there was a hint of sadness in her eyes.

"His Highness left at dawn," she said softly.

Jungkook’s lips parted slightly.

"Did he…" She hesitated, not knowing how to ask.

Not knowing if she should.

Not knowing if she wanted to hear the answer.

Lady Ji’s voice remained careful but firm.

"Before he left, he instructed me to take care of you."

Jungkook’s heart clenched.

He was gone.

Just like that.

No words.No goodbyes.

Nothing but a whisper in the dark.

She lowered her gaze, fingers tightening over the silk of her robes.

Had she imagined it?

Had she truly heard him call her his wife?

Or was she foolish again, clinging to words that were never meant to be hers?

---

A month passed too quickly.

Jungkook felt every moment slip through her fingers like grains of sand, yet she remained powerless to stop it.

The preparations for the concubine ceremony were in full display.

The entire Crown Prince’s palace was adorned with decorations, lesser than her own wedding, perhaps, but still enough to mock her very existence.

Every banner, every silk-draped pillar, every polished lantern felt like a quiet humiliation.

She had long learned to endure.

To turn away.

To pretend she did not care.

But what she could not ignore...

Was the shift in power.

More court ladies and maidservants had been assigned to the Crown Prince’s quarters, but not for her.

For the concubine.

The woman who had yet to step into the palace, yet already commanded more attendants than the Crown Princess herself.

Jungkook noticed the imbalance immediately.

Her own court ladies had always been few in number, but now the difference was stark.

She had one maidservant.

The concubine had dozens.

Even worse.

She had power.

Power that came from Lord and Lady Seowon.

Power that Jungkook did not have.

She knew what this meant.

She knew what was to come.

And soon enough...

She saw it with her own eyes.

---

Jungkook had been walking through the courtyard when she heard the commotion.

Her steps stilled.

A sharp voice echoed against the stone pillars, laced with mockery and cruelty.

She turned the corner...

And there she was.

The Concubine’s Chief Court Lady.

She stood, her posture imperious, arms crossed, looking down at Lady Ji.

Jungkook’s breath hitched.

Lady Ji knelt on the ground, head bowed, her posture stiff.

The other woman towered over her, lips curled in satisfaction.

"You must understand, Lady Ji," the woman said in a syrupy voice. "His Highness’s household has changed. You should be careful where you stand. It would be… unfortunate if you did not adapt."

Jungkook’s stomach twisted.

Lady Ji remained silent.

She did not defend herself.

She did not fight back.

She only endured.

Jungkook felt rage coil in her chest, but before she could step forward...

Lady Ji lifted her gaze.

For a single moment, their eyes met.

And in Lady Ji’s gaze, Jungkook saw everything.

A quiet plea.A desperate warning.

Don’t interfere.

Because they both knew.

Lady Ji was not just being bullied.

She was being tested.

And any misstep, any sign of resistance, would give Seokjin’s enemies an excuse to strike.

Jungkook’s hands trembled at her sides.

She could not react. She could not speak.

Not here.

Not now.

So she did the only thing she could...

She turned around and walked away.

But as she left, a single thought rang loud in her mind:

This cannot continue.

For the first time, Jungkook realized.

If she wanted to protect her own people, she could not stay silent.

If she did not fight for them.

No one would.
