10:53, 10 August 2021Jennifer's POV
Ever since Marty asked Jenni out at the dance, they've been pretty much inseparable. I don't ever not see them together. To be honest, when are they not ever apart? Except for obvious reasons of course. It's disgusting. That should be me, not her. Despite the fact that at the same time I don't want to be.
I know Marty and I have had our problems lately, but we should have been able to work this one out. Lately, he had just been getting busier and busier. He seemed to hardly ever have time for me. The lack of seeing my boyfriend just angered me. If he wasn't at Doc's house, he was with that girl.
I can't believe I caught him cheating on me. Twice of that. First, it was the phone call. He swore up and down that he didn't have sex with her. That it was just a misunderstanding of words on my part. Maybe it was, maybe it wasn't. But that's not how I feel. The second time they were kissing in the exact same spot we had been the day the school wouldn't let him perform at the dance. But last minute by my school vote, they reluctantly allowed him to play.
I had yanked him away from her and demanded an explanation. In the end, he had told me that our relationship wasn't working out and that he was breaking up with me. He gave me a peace offering, but I couldn't take it, not with her in the picture.
I wish there was some way to get back at her, to get back at him. Some way that would even cause them to break up. I wouldn't feel the desire to want him back, but at least then I wouldn't have to see them being all lovey dovey. I scan around the hallway, looking for an idea. I see Claire and her boyfriend Marcus. They were sharing a long, but quick kiss before class. I studied her for a moment, realizing something. They look very similar from behind, despite a few hidden differences.
I'm sure Marty would break up with her, if he was under the impression that she cheated on him with another guy. When the two break apart, I walk over and tap Claire on the shoulder. She turns around and smiles at me. I know Claire from her being in most of my classes. "Hey, what's up?" She greets. "Hi Claire, I've got a favor to ask of you." I smile innocently. "Sure, what is it?" She asks curiously. "Do you think you could let me take a picture of you from behind kissing Marcus. It's for an assignment in one of my classes." I ask as if it was really true. "Oh, okay." Claire smiles, happy to have an excuse to kiss her boyfriend one more time.
I pull out my camera and snap the picture. I take it out of the slot and fan it to help it develop faster. When it finally fills out, I smile happily. Perfect. "Thanks Claire." I grin, a little too wide, but neither of them notice. They walk off and go on about their day.
I wait for my class with Marty to break the news to him. When I walk into class, he's already sitting in a desk. I put on a fake saddened appearance and sit down next to him with the picture hidden in my purse. "Marty, can I talk to you?" I talked to him for the first time in months. I hope this doesn't ruin my plans.
He turns to me with an alarmed expression. "Yeah, sure. What's up?" "Look Marty, I know we haven't talked in months, but there's something I have to tell you." I start, trying to guilt trip him into listening. "What is it?" He says cautiously, his expression unmoved. "This morning, when I was on my way to class. I saw Jenni." I say gravely as possible. "Yeah so, what about her?" he asked, not buying. " I saw, I saw her kissing another guy." I stutter, trying to stay in character. "What, no way! I just saw her this morning; I was with her!" Marty shouts, getting out of his seat. "Must have been after a class you didn't have together." I shrug, adding fuel to the fire.
Now he's pissed off. Perfect, just like I wanted. "You're lying!" He shouts, possibly seeing through me. I need to show him the picture now or I'll slip up. "If you don't believe me, I have proof." I smirk, going to grab the picture out of my bag. "Let me see." Marty growls. On the inside I smile, but on the outside I frown as I hand him the picture. He looks over it and his mouth drops. He tries to say something, but doesn't. "How could she?" He mutters under his breath. I smirk when he's not paying attention.
I let him keep the picture. He won't notice the difference. For the rest of class, he stayed miserable. This is too good. Too bad I won't get to see the look on her face when he breaks up with her like he did me.
Jenni's POV
The next time I see Marty, he looks really upset. I try to comfort him, but he pushes me away. What's wrong with him all of a sudden. He was perfectly fine this morning.
When school's out, I try confronting him again. "Marty, what's gotten into you?" I ask, concerned. We were walking out of school. At least we were out of earshot now. "I should be the one asking you that." He answers, coldly. The words send shivers down my spine. "What's wrong? You were fine this morning." I try to get an answer out of him again. "What's this I hear about you kissing another guy?" Marty questions out the blue. "What? I haven't been kissing anyone but you." I point out, my cheeks turning pink.
The kiss with Biff doesn't count because that was forced and Marty knows that because he's the one that saved me. "According to this you have." Marty grumbles irritated, pulling something out of his pocket and shoving it in front of me. I take it and stare at the thing he gave me. It's a picture. In the picture is a girl that significantly looks similar to me from behind, but I know good and well that it's not me.
I recognize the two from passing them in the halls, but I don't know them personally. I do at least know their names. Claire, a girl who sometimes gets mistaken for me in the hall by some of the teachers. Then there's Marcus. A boy who seems pretty nice and dates Claire. They've been together for as long as I've noticed.
Tears well up in my eyes. I can't believe he thinks Claire is me in the picture. I do see the similarities, but I also see the differences at the same time. How can he not see this, that this isn't me? "Marty, this isn't me." I choke on my tears. They now trickle in a stream down my face. My hands grip the picture, Slightly crumbling it beneath my fingertips. He pierces his lips and doesn't answer. "I don't know who fed you this bull crap, but it's all lies!" I shout, trying to control my emotions. "Jennifer told me and she's the one that took the picture." He retorts, pain and anger in his eyes. "Jennifer. Of course, I should have known." I mutter, not giving off any remorse. "We may not still be together, but she's still my friend Jen. Whether she's okay with it or not." He says, his expression mute. Of course you say that. You still want to believe that she's a good person. She is a good person, but a devious one.
I bet she's doing this to get back at Marty and revenge on me for accepting his proposal at the dance. I understand that he's angry, but if it were me I would have tried to gather more information about the accusations first. It's all fun and games until someone gets hurt and that's what she wants. Jennifer wants to hurt and break us apart.
I'm afraid it's working. She's got him so upset that he's just pointing fingers. " look, I promise you that that's not me in the picture. I was framed, I swear. From the bottom of my heart, please believe me. I love you, you know that." I try to explain to him that that's not me in the picture one more time. I search his eyes for a hopeful answer. Still blank and shaking his head. I see the frustration on his face.
Who to believe: Girlfriend or ex girlfriend? I have a feeling he's not going to go for the ladder. "Jen, I want to believe you, but the picture isn't helping your case." he says, his voice a little less harsh. I look back to the picture. Damn, he's right. We were both wearing jeans today and somehow managed to have the same shirt on. I feel a lump in my throat and I bite my lip. This isn't good. "Jenni, I don't know how else to say this and it hurts me to do so, but I think we should break up." The words drop on me like a bombshell. This is what I was afraid of. All this over a jealous girl who couldn't leave well enough be.
We stopped under a big shady tree. His eyes filled with sadness and hurt. I couldn't fight the pain in my chest anymore and the tears just went. I couldn't face him anymore. I let the slightly crumpled picture drop from my hands. I stared at him with so many emotions going through my body. His blue eyes darkened and his expression unchanging. I decided that I stayed there long enough. I turned around and ran off, not saying another word.
I'm glad I rode my bike to school today. I don't want to be near Marty more than I have to right now. I decide to ride to the one place that I feel like I can go. Doc will know what to do. I hope. If he can't help me I know Einie will make me feel better. At least for a little while I know he will.
When I get there, I park my bike on the side of the garage wall. I quickly knock on the door and then impatiently wait for an answer. The door opens a moment later, revealing the person I most want to see. "Jenni my dear, what a pleasant-" He stops talking when he gets a closer look at my face. "Great Scott!" Doc shouts, grabbing me by the shoulder. "Come with me and tell me what happened." He said, whisking me in the door. I mindlessly follow him downstairs to his lab. I sit on the loveseat. My eyes are now dry, but everything else still hurts.
Einie trots over to me and sniffs my hand. He barks once and jumps up into my lap. He curls up on me like a lap dog. "Einie, you do know you're not a lap dog right?" I somewhat laugh for the first time since my fight with Marty. I feel Doc drape his arm over my shoulder. "What's wrong and where's Marty?" He asks, sympathetically. "That's the thing, I don't know. I haven't seen him since our fight. I left and headed straight here when he didn't say anything else." I whimper and lean into him. I stroke Einie to distract myself. "What were you two fighting about?" Doc asks, slowly trying to piece together the puzzle. "It's a complicated story." I mumble, almost not wanting to tell him. "I'm willing to listen." He softly smiles. I sigh and tell him about the picture depicting me with someone other than Marty and our break up.
"Hmm." Doc furrows his brows together. "Oh Marty, what have you done now?" He mumbles to himself. I scratch Einie's ears while waiting for a more coherent and direct reply. "Do you still have the picture?" He says quickly, turning to face me. I shake my head no, pressing my lips together. He tells me that he doesn't really need it, that he just wanted to see it. I nod in understanding. "Don't worry Jenni, Marty will calm down soon." He starts. "You see, Marty is very easily influenced. If he doesn't have a lot of proof, he'll believe whatever he's got in front of him. Just like with that picture. He didn't have a lot of evidence so he took his anger and frustration out on you without figuring out more of the truth." He explains. I nod in agreement.
We sit there in silence for a few minutes. Doc was lost in thought as I sat there petting Einie. "Jenni!" I hear Doc call my name. "Hmmm?" I look at him in confusion. "Do you believe in time travel?" He asks out of the blue. I think back to the truck ride with Marty and how he told me a little bit about time travel and the future. I smile at the thought on the inside. He's finally telling me about this. "Honestly, I don't see why not." I half smile, pretending to be a little less aware of what he's talking about. "Would you like to take a little trip with me? I can have you back before anyone notices you're gone." He offers. I eagerly nod my head.
"Oh and this little trip stays between you and me okay." He adds. I smile. "Just so you know, we're not exploring. I'm just going to get a few things and thought you would like to join me to get away for awhile." Doc winks, getting up from the couch. "Yeah, I'd love to get away for awhile." I grinned excitedly. I gently push Einie off of me and follow Doc to the car. I get in the passenger side and Einie climbs in the back seat.
I laugh and shake my head. Silly dog. I watch Doc start the car and press all kinds of buttons. When he was satisfied, we flew off into the unknown. This will be a nice time to get away from everything and everyone.
