Time was ticking by at school. Sunoo and Jungwon sat in the cafeteria, waiting for Hyejin while they ate their food.
They both kept looking around restlessly, becoming anxious. Normally, she was there much earlier. She normally always came running happily towards the two friends with her lunch in her hands, but now they had passed fifteen minutes. Still, she was nowhere to be seen.
They did see her classmates, including Riki, Jake, Jay, Jieun, but Hyejin herself was not visible at all.
Sunoo looked worriedly at Jungwon, who was looking around for Hyejin. "Do you think she's okay? I saw her this morning though?" Sunoo asked his best friend who was sitting across from him.
Jungwon quickly looked towards Sunoo. "She's never this late," he replied, "Maybe we should ask someone if anyone has seen her?"
Sunoo nodded. Jungwon's idea didn't sound that bad.
Faster than Jungwon could, Sunoo got up and ran to the table where Jake and Jay were sitting with other friends of theirs.
Jungwon quickly ran after him. "Kim Sunoo! Wait for me!"
"Hey," Sunoo said as he reached the table Jay was sitting at.
The group of friends at the table looked up at Sunoo, Jungwon behind him who had just arrived because Sunoo was a lot faster than him.
Jake tilted his head slightly as Jay raised his eyebrow. "What is it?" the two asked at the same time.
Jungwon pushed Sunoo aside slightly so he could stand next to him. "Have you guys happened to see Hyejin yet? We've been worried about her since she lunches with us every break," Jungwon asked them.
Sunoo nodded to let them know he wanted to ask the same thing.
Jake looked at Jay, knowing that he had talked to her that very morning, but also knowing that she had not come into class after that.
Jay shrugged his shoulders. "I talked to her this morning, but didn't come to the first class and didn't even show up after that," he replied.
"The last person to come into class was Riki. His eyes were all red, like he had been crying," Jake added to Jay's explanation.
Sunoo gently punched Jungwon in the stomach with his elbow. Jungwon flinched and turned his head to Sunoo. "Maybe Riki is the last person Hyejin talked to," Sunoo's eyes widened, feeling that that was it.
"So if we talk to Riki-"
"We can find Hyejin," Sunoo finished Jungwon sentence by interrupting him.
The two friends nodded at each other and ran out of the cafeteria, running to the school' rooftop, where Riki hangs out most of the time during breaks to get some fresh air.
Jake and Jay looked at each other in confusion, as if they felt something was wrong. They whispered with each other for a moment before they had both decided to get up from their table and follow the two friends on their path.
-
Riki, who stood on top of the school's rooftop gazing at the sky to receive fresh air, kept thinking about Hyejin.
After gym class, Riki had gone back to the lockers to put his things in his locker, but strangely, he noticed something odd.
All of Hyejin's stuff was in front of her locker. Her phone, school bag, sportswear. Even her coat.
And Hyejin hadn't shown up to class either. His thoughts were all about her at the moment.
Didn't I treat her too meanly? Why didn't she come to class? How did I find all her stuff in front of her locker. Is she even okay at all?
Riki sighed deeply as he looked back down at his feet, where all of Hyejin's belongings were lying.
"Hyejin, please come back. I miss y-"
Riki was interrupted in his sentence by the sound of a creaking door behind him. He was startled and turned around, where he saw four boys walking towards him.
Jungwon, Sunoo, Jay and Jake.
It felt like some kind of attack on him.Four against one, you could never win that, right?
Jay almost immediately ran up to Riki and grabbed the collar of his blouse. "Where's Hyejin?" Jay shouted at him.
Riki closed his eyes. "I don't know," he replied.
Jay released Riki's collar, harshly, and then gave him a hard slap on his left cheek. "What do you mean? You don't know!" Jay shouted at him once again, but much louder this time.
Riki's head turned with the punch he recieved and stumbled a little to the side, that's how harsh it was.
Jake pulled Jay back by his right arm to create distance between the two. "Calm down," Jake whispered as he patted Jay his back, who couldn't control his anger.
Jungwon walked over to Riki, who was rubbing his red cheek. "You really don't know where she is?" Jungwon asked him, calmly.
Riki shook his head.
Sunoo looked at Riki's feet, where familiar things lay behind them. Sunoo tilted his head slightly before running towards the two people in front of him and stepping behind Riki. He crouched and picked up the coat that was lying there on the ground.
"Sunoo, what are you doing?" Jungwon asked irritated at Sunoo, because all he was concerned about now was Hyejin and Sunoo was doing all sorts of strange things.
When Sunoo stood up, Jungwon widened his eyes. Sunoo had Hyejin's coat in his hands. A dark blue winter coat with a white stripe on it.
Jungwon quickly grabbed the coat from his best friend's hands, studied the coat for a moment, then looked up at Sunoo again. "This one is Hyejin's!" Jungwon exclaimed alarmed.
Jake, who was quietly trying to calm Jay down, looked up at the two best friends and Riki, distracting Jay as well.
"Hyejin's coat?" Jake said as he walked up to them and stood next to Jungwon, grabbing the coat from his hands. His hands dug into the pockets as Jungwon nodded up and down.
Sunoo, meanwhile, was busy with the remaining items on the ground, including her school bag and Jay, who stood further away continued to watch Riki intently.
Riki looked up and saw Jay staring at him. Jay's lips turned into a smirk as he saw Riki getting caught for having Hyejin her stuff with him.
His fingers formed an L and he placed it on his forehead.
"Loser," Jay whispered.
It was completely unintelligible for Riki to hear, but you could clearly read the word from his lips.
Riki shrugged it off, ignoring Jay.
Suddenly, a sound rang out. A ringtone. Everyone stopped what they were doing and looked to see where the sound was coming from.
Jake held Hyejin's coat that he was holding in his hands slightly askew, causing a phone to fall out.
It was hers.
Someone was calling her, Sunghoon, to be exact.
Sunoo picked up the phone from the ground, picked it up and put it on speaker.
"Hyejin! Finally!" Sunghoon spoke on the other end of the phone, "I'm worried about you! Why don't you answer my messages? Where are you?"
Jay moved closer, though still far away from Riki. Everyone looked at the phone and then up at each other.
Sunoo cleared his throat before looking back at the phone. "It's me, Sunoo," he replied, "I found Hyejin's phone, coat, bag and everything here and she's nowhere to be seen."
Sunghoon fell silent. "Is she missing?" He asked a moment later.
"I think so," Sunoo gulped as his right leg began to shake from anxiety.
"I'll go look for her," Sunghoon replied immediately, "You go ahead and call her brother Heeseung in the meantime and ask if she might have been home. Otherwise, I'll know where she is."
Sunghoon hung up.
"What are we waiting for?" Jungwon said as he tossed Hyejin her bag over his back and let the cold breeze wave trough his hair, "Let's find Hyejin."
