16. A fateful Night

04:23, 24 November 2015

Time has lost all meaning to me now, it just flitters by and causes me no concern, life runs at a different pace and is no longer tied to the dictation of hours and minutes. Days slide into weeks and weeks into months and before I know it the seasons change, and I am once again surrounded by the warm, colourful, and golden embrace of mid-summer.

I have lived in this wonderful place more than a year, and in that time I have changed so profoundly I don't even remember who or what I was before. It is like I have always been an elf. It is like I have always dwelt in the depths of the woods listening to the spirits of the trees and communing with the natural world like it is as easy as breathing.

In my determination to become what Oropher wishes me to be, and what I know I can be, I work hard at honing my elven abilities. For the most part I look to Gilron for guidance, she teaches me how to be an elleth in all the practical and logical ways, but I was curious as to how I could push myself further. For that I turned to Thranduil, because he told me once of elven magic and I know he has a lot of it buried deep down within in him, he just likes to keep that side of himself quiet. He was reluctant at first to discuss any of this with me, encouraging me to seek out other elves skilled at magic instead of him, elves he felt had more control - like healers. I was persistent though and eventually he agreed to help me become more in-tune with my fae, how to learn how to separate body from spirit and rely on this sense instead of the physical to guide me. It was difficult but once I achieved it I experienced much deeper connections with my surroundings and with those closest to me.

I have experienced so many new and wonderful things that my creative spirit is just flowing, I painted so much that I ran out of things to paint on. So I took to making things grow, this turned into such a hobby that Calanon, the chief healer, approached me and asked me to oversee the healing gardens. A space that I, with the help of Thranduil, Oliel, and even Aradan, created to grow plants and herbs specifically for healing, but also a space that is conducive to recover. We learnt from Thranduil that a place full of subtle stimulus was just enough to help him regain and understand his senses again. So I brought a bit of his beloved wood into the caves, and between the two of us we created a sanctuary for those elves that were wounded either physically or spiritually, to come for rest.

King Oropher himself was so impressed by my endeavours that he blessed the gardens, and with a little persuasion from his son, put me in charge of all things pertaining to the wellbeing of his people. I cried that day because at last I felt I had proven to him that I was serious, that I was not some awkward youngster, with not a brain cell in her pretty head. I have worked hard and it has felt good, for I now have a purpose outside of the family unit, I am useful and helpful. Though Oropher is far from impressed with me personally, he accepts Thranduil will not be swayed on his decisions and that I don't appear to be disappearing any time soon. I get the distinct impression that I have not quite grasped what the King needs me to understand in order for him to be satisfied with me, but I really don't know what else to do? Thranduil tells me I have nothing more to prove, his unwavering love and strength of spirit keeps me settled, and I don't stress over it but I do worry over him.

Thranduil spends more and more time training, and I have lost count of the nights he has retuned bruised or limping or both. He won't explain himself and shrugs off any of my concerns, stating he is only rebuilding his strength because he will not be retiring as his father so forcefully wants him to do. He will not be told what to do nor will he let some old war wound slow him down. I swear if I didn't love him so much I would hate him and his ruthless determination.

I do love him though, frighteningly so; I hate being parted from him any longer than a few days. Though we have not really discussed our marriage and whether or not we want it to be an affair or just something between the two of us. Personally I don't feel comfortable with the idea just yet, I want Oropher's blessing, not just for me but for Thranduil and Legolas. For as much as he acts like his Father's judgment is of no concern to him, I know deep down it is and like me, I know he wants the acceptance for the sake of Legolas. A happy unified home is all we want, and so far Oropher has given me a wide berth. Though the King has notified the council that his son is pledged to another and it is all but common knowledge now that I am the secret love.

For the most part I have not noticed any changes in my everyday life for nearly everyone I interact with either knew, or had made an educated guess that something was up between Thranduil and I. Though if I travel about the caves and mingle with civilians I do hear whispers, and I am treated with a certain amount of respect and stand offish type behaviour. I am now well and truly noticed within the realm, and although there are those who don't agree with the union there are plenty who do. Often when I am roaming the markets I will be given flowers or many will want to just hold my hand, and bless me for bringing joyful news to their home.

Yet I worry, something is not right in the never ending happiness that is my peaceful life, I feel it. I cannot be certain but there is a tangible change in the outside world, and though Thranduil continues to dismiss my concerns I don't believe him. He has given me no reason to doubt him and I feel guilty for even questioning him, but I just know something is not right. Yet this is only a fragment in comparison to the vast joy I am experiencing, besides I have Legolas to care for and he is a sensitive child. He would pick up if I was upset in the slightest so I refrain from dwelling on unsavoury thoughts and live very much in the moment with him, which is always fun and spontaneous.

On this particularly afternoon Legolas and I are in my gardens, he has found a playmate whose mother is recovering in the halls after a particularly traumatic birth. Though all is well now, the family still need rest and I had been insistent that the little elfling could spend time with Legolas, whilst his mother and baby sister rested and his father could take a break too. So both little boys are running riot among the shrubbery in the golden light that leaks through the natural archways. I had made it clear from the start that this place had to appear natural, and so it exists close to the surface - like the wood has literally crept into the enchanted halls. It will still take me many a long year to get this place how I want it, but at least I have years and I am thankful for every moment I am alive.

I root around in the soil tending some struggling lavender and rosemary; I also spy some lemon thyme that I could harvest for the stores. I smile fondly at the over excited giggling of the two youngsters as their voices fade into the distance, but I know Legolas is not that far, I can sense his little spirit and I know he is close to me, and I feel no panic he is safe. Though another sound has me straightening up, my brows furrow and slowly I stand to my feet just as a strong hand clamps around my waist, and long fingers curl around my throat.

"I thought I taught you better than this?" Thranduil's whispers quietly in my ear as his lips brush my exposed shoulder were my dress has slipped in my digging. "I could have been anyone, and here you are without even a weapon to defend yourself."

A smile plays on my lips and I resist the urge to be taken captive so easily. I am not without a weapon, for concealed in my belt is an ivory handled serrated blade. I quietly slip it from its sheath and plant my elbow firmly in his rib cage, just in the right spot to cause him enough discomfort to relax his pose. I take advantage of this and spin to face him, then I lunge forward, Thranduil staggers back and hits the crumbling remains of a stone pillar.

"You did teach me better," I murmur with quite a smug expression and purposefully rest the blunt side of the blade on the skin of his exposed throat.

I am no fighter but Thranduil enjoys teaching me little self-defence tactics, and I love learning them too particularly when I get to try them out.

"Evidently!" He grins as his fingers curl around mine and the knife, with a swift movement he tugs my weapon from my hand which leaves me a little startled...I thought I had a good grip on that thing. Though I don't really have time to dwell on the action as his lips meet mine, and my excitement at being reunited with him after a whole twenty four hours just takes over.

Thranduil lets me push him back against the ivy covered pillar, and in turn tightens his grip around my waist and physically pulls me upward so my toes are barely touching the ground...whoa he really has gotten stronger! I laugh gently in between caressing his face and stealing tender kisses, he whispers endearments and suggestive remarks in my ears that make me blush and shiver, but our peace is predictably shattered.

"Ada! Ada! Ada!" Legolas chants excitedly as he scampers into view with his dark haired companion. Thranduil effortlessly disentangles himself from me and spins instantly to catch his son in his arms, the movements so fluid that the child would never have caught the suggestive stance we stood in before his arrival.

I chuckle as Thranduil easily tosses a delighted Legolas up in his arms, and regards his new playmate with a certain amount of curiosity. Brief introductions are made before Thranduil is chasing both elflings around the marble fountain in the midst of the gardens. I follow them for this is probably the best entertainment anyone could ask for.

Thranduil has Legolas' little friend tucked under his arm and has deftly locked his son in his other arm; he then proceeds to threaten to dunk both boys in the cool fountain water. The defiant shrieks and wails of resistance have me in stitches, I can barely breathe and it is only at the arrival of the other elfling's father, that playtime is declared over. Legolas waves off his new friend and makes Thranduil promise to invite him back to play soon.

We happily exit the gardens and I leave all of my harvested goods in the stores for drying out, and re-join my boys. However it is only when I am sauntering towards Thranduil that I notice him gripping his left forearm quite securely;

"What's wrong with your arm?" I ask as I finally reach him and he just shrugs.

"I hurt it in training," he sighs when I give him a stern look.

"Let me see," I insist forcefully taking his wrist and peeling back his sleeve. I inhale sharply at the sight of a hastily dressed deep gash and give him an accusing look. "Thranduil, you need this looked at."

"It is nothing I cannot fix myself," he replies breezily and sharply pulls his sleeve down when Legolas skips into view. He grins down adoringly at his son and offers his hand. "Come, I am starving."

"Me too!" Legolas chirps and takes his father's outstretched hand then looks to me, "Are you coming Clara?"

"Yes Clara; are you coming for supper?" Thranduil smiles with the least bit of concern in his features.

I narrow my eyes at him but he just ignores the look and continues to gaze hopefully at me. These training sessions are getting a little too dangerous, doesn't he understand? He is literally breaking all the healers' orders as it is just by training with real weapons. He should be resting and taking things slowly, not throwing himself back into all his old routines. He has been told that although his skin appears well healed it is easily broken, and harder to mend, if he receives a deep wound quite like the one he is sporting, it may not heal so easily. He could bleed out, but is he concerned...nope not one little iota!

"I don't think the King invited me?" I say sourly still not impressed with Thranduil's complete lack of concern.

"Well I am inviting you," Thranduil replies and Legolas nods vigorously in agreement.

"Please Clara, Grandpa will not mind," he adds and gives me pleading eyes that match his father's identically.

"Oh alright!" I mutter and allow Thranduil to wrap his good arm loosely around my shoulders; "Only if you promise to have that cut seen to at some stage," I whisper quietly to him.

"It is fine Clara, I am fine," he mutters in return and kisses my temple and I relent slightly, yet I still feel uneasy with all of this, he can be so hard to predict.

I just get the feeling he is being secretive, in his own attempt to keep me from worrying, does he not know me by now? Does he not know I will worry regardless? I know I am outwardly scowling and so attempt to rearrange my features in preparation for tonight's dinner with Oropher. This shall be interesting and strained as usual. How do I get talked into these things? Ah yes, that is right, I am a sucker for emotive eyes and attractive princes.

xXx

I visible wince as Oropher continues to tap out an irritated rhythm on the elaborate dining table within the family's quarters. He has barely touched the food that was set in front of him all evening; he just pushed the contents around the plate and attempts strained conversation between Thranduil and I. I should have known to decline an invitation to stay for dinner, ordinarily it would not be an issue, but when it's all but common knowledge that you're engaged to the King's son without said King's exact permission, things can be a little tense. Legolas has long since left the table and is playing about the lounge with his pretend weapons - killing orcs and goblins among other things.

"So," I start, determined to break up the awkward silence, "Any further news from Gil-galad?"

Oropher's glazed eyes suddenly focus intently on me and then flash towards Thranduil, who unfortunately glares straight back over the rim of the wine goblet he is slowly draining. It does not help both sit on opposite ends of the long table, and I unfortunately sit in the middle. The King's jaw tightens and he shifts in his chair. Bringing his hand to his chin, he sighs heavily and drops his head into this hand. I really should have just kept my mouth shut, why do I always have to talk? Seriously where is duct tape when you need it?

"How. Do. You. Know of the correspondence between the Noldor King and me?" Oropher literally breathes out the question, and rubs his forehead furiously.

"I...uh...well I um," I stop and give Thranduil a panicked look, but his face is set in what could only be described as a moody glower, his grip tightening on the goblet in his hand.

"Articulation Clara, please attempt to think a sentence through before you speak," Oropher groans again and slaps his hand down hard on the wooden table, but gives his son a very displeased look.

"Do not speak to her like that!" Thranduil snaps bitterly and leans across the table threateningly. I slide down my chair and take a very long gulp of the strong wine, silently praying this does not erupt into anything. The two engage a long stare off and eventually I find my voice from somewhere;

"It is fine," I reply airily, "Your father is right, I need to speak clearer, it is a really bad habit that I have." I swivel in my seat and attempt to rearrange my features into a genuine expression of understanding; "Sorry your majesty, what I meant to say was that Thranduil has been educating me on current affairs, that and I figured some things out on my own."

"Political matters interest you child?" Oropher asks whilst slowly sliding his gaze away from his son to rest on me.

"Of course!" I chirp hoping that this is the right thing to say. "At least matters that involve this family, whispers of war is concerning."

"Indeed, it is an immediate concern" The King nods and I feel Thranduil actually vibrate with irritation even from across the table. He hates me talking about any of this, he doesn't want me to be worried but I would rather know than be left in the dark.

"This is ridiculous," Thranduil hisses into his drink and makes an annoyed sound at the back of his throat. "There is nothing immediate about it, Adar stop exaggerating!"

"That was not the attitude you took this morning at the council meeting," Oropher replies quite evenly and raises his eyebrow. My head whips around to my intended, who drops his gaze and refuses to meet my accusing glare.

"Adar not now," Thranduil mutters and drops his head into his hand; he rolls his gaze to the side and watches his son intently for a few moments. I follow his gaze and smile adoringly at the sight of Legolas crawling over the back of the sofa in an attempt to fish his wooden sword off the ground below. However he is not quite big enough or long enough in body yet and just over stretches a little too much. With a clatter and a yelp he lands on the ground, and after a few minutes of grumbling he triumphantly retrieves his sword and returns to his great battle.

"Are you denying that?" Oropher pushes breaking the silence and I really regret opening my mouth now.

"No I am not!" he sighs and rubs his temple before actually meeting my eyes, his own hold some sort of frantic look that I don't quite understand; "I will not talk of war around my family, and this morning I merely suggested that you should reinstate me as General of the guard. If, Valar forbid, we need to step up defences then I should oversee that."

"Aradan can manage, you are not ready Thranduil and you know it!" Oropher replies in a very authoritative tone.

"Aradan is in over his head and you know it Adar!" Thranduil spits back with venom in his voice; "Orc and goblins are one thing, but organised battle with the foulest and deadliest beasts known to us - he would be fighting blind. I do not doubt his ability only his experience, he would even confess that himself."

"What creatures are you expecting to attack us?" My question takes him off guard silencing him briefly; the look Oropher gives suggests he was waiting on his son to land himself in it.

"None!" Thranduil cries and leans across the table to take my hand, but I pull it away and place it on my lap. "Clara?" he sighs in frustration then openly glares at his father.

"I suggest if you wish to make this elleth your wife that you work on your communication skills," Is Oropher's simple reply as he stands from the table.

"I am only trying to protect her and my son! They should not worry if it is not necessary!" Thranduil growls and abruptly stands to his feet.

"You are a Prince Thranduil, you cannot separate your worlds you cannot shield them! If you do not think she is strong enough to handle that truth then you should have considered that before you pledged yourself to her!" Oropher's voice is ice cold and I actually buckle under the weight of it. The King turns to regard me with emotionless eyes before he continues; "We are rulers, it is the harsh truth that our mates suffer because of our actions, but it is our duty and those ellith brought up in the realms of our society know this. They understand the sacrifices; love is not always a luxury we can afford."

"She is strong enough!" Thranduil practically snarls and hits the table so hard with his fist that I jump, but Oropher just smirks and shakes his head. With a curt nod he takes his leave, beckoning for Legolas to join him.

"I can put him to bed," I say swiftly and jump to my feet when I understand the King's actions. He waves his hand dismissively at me and smiles down at his Grandson.

"It is quite alright, I promised Legolas a few bed time tales tonight," Oropher keeps his tone light and Legolas nods happily in response completely unaware of the cool atmosphere, and with that he picks him up and strides out of the room leaving me with Thranduil.

When I eventually turn around to meet his gaze he is leaning over the table with a regretful look on his face;

"She has a name!" I spit and angrily start stacking the plates up for the servants to collect. "You should not speak for me Thranduil, you are only making relations between your father and I worse!"

"I am sorry," he sighs and sits down on the chair opposite me, I pause for a moment because I am always stunned when he apologizes for it is a rare thing. "I should have been more honest with you."

"Yes you should have!" I snap but my temper is wavering when he gives me those devastated eyes. "If you do not tell me then you father really will believe I am nothing more than a weakling."

"You are not weak!" He cries and stretches across the table again and this time catches my hand, "I am happy with you Clara, you have given me a family again and I cherish that more than you can fathom. Forgive me if I do not want to tarnish what we have with unnecessary worry, forgive me if I want to keep you innocent and unscathed by the world outside these borders. I saw what it did to my mother, I will not let it do that to you."

I frown and glare at the ground for the longest time, reluctant to give in that easy to his manipulative eyes, but I understand where he is coming from. I understand but that still doesn't mean I can be happy about it. I don't believe him and I really do know that there is something to worry about now.

"Clara please? Will you not look at me?" his melodic voice is pleading and the sadness in it unsettles me. So I meet his upset gaze for a moment before yanking my hand from his grasp, he startles at the reaction and sits up straighter, watching me mournfully.

I wander around the table taking my time, keeping my expression serious and resolute as I come to stand behind him. He tries to turn his head to regard me but I drop my hands on his shoulders and gently squeeze them. I feel the tense knots through his loose and thin tunic, as I slowly begin to knead those strong, broad, shoulders. He sighs in relief and leans his head against my breast, closing his eyes as I slide my arms down his chest until my cheek rests against his.

"You will worry yourself sick if you don't start confiding in me," I mutter and press my lips lightly to his cheek. "I can handle it, I am big girl now!"

"I know you are," he sighs with a gentle laugh and wraps his hand around one of mine; "And I will, I swear I will, I will bring you to the council meetings if you so well wish! But please believe me when I say war is not on us yet, it is still only whispers, I just want to be prepared."

"Hmm," I roll my eyes and press my lips to his ear, he physically shudders at the sensation and I feel a little smug that I am able to evoke such reactions from the Woodland Prince. I follow the outline of his ear and whisper as seductively as I am capable of; "I do not believe you." Thranduil's grip tightens on my wrist and his breath becomes shallow. I smile triumphantly and finish my statement with a gentle nip to the tip of his ear, which has the desired effect of making him moan softly. At this point I straighten up and begin to saunter off.

I stifle a giggle when I hear the table get practically booted across the room, and in a few short seconds Thranduil has me in his grasp. I twist away from him but he holds on just long enough to steal a feverish kiss. Once I manage to pull my lips away from his I give him a stern look;

"I deserved that," he says with an apologetic look; "Though I do not think I mind such punishments."

"That wasn't your punishment," I chuckle, "I was just having some fun."

"Then what is my punishment," he looks a little worried and I cannot help my peal of laugher, I must be scary if I actually make him look that concerned. Though eventually I sigh and wrap my arms tightly around his neck stretching up on my toes so our foreheads touch, and I continue to stare into his worried eyes for some time before I speak;

"No punishments," I mutter cheerily and kiss him tenderly. I let my hand slip down to entwine with his right hand and pull it up to observe the silver ring that has not left his index finger. "Your father is right." I eventually say and I am met with Thranduil's confused expression.

"About what?" He asks and lets me examine the ring thoughtfully for a moment.

"I was not brought up in this society, I don't know what it means to be the spouse of a prince or what he means by sacrifice," I mumble and then lift my gaze to meet his; "But if you continue to keep me in the dark, regardless of how just your actions are, I will never understand what it is your father needs me to be."

"You do not need to be anything you are perfect," Thranduil starts to interject but I hold up my hand to silence him.

"I am perfect to you, but not for your people, not yet anyway," I say with a resolute nod. "I am learning, but they need to know that I care for them and have their best interests at heart. If there is trouble on the horizon then I should know, if only to be prepared to comfort them."

Thranduil pulls back to regard me for a moment, and I almost blush under his intense gaze. He eventually smiles and runs his thumb along the length of my cheek; "You sound more and more like a noble elleth every day, are you certain that you were not of royal birth?"

"Not to my knowledge," I chuckle but before I can say anymore he pulls me in for another slow and lingering kiss, which quickly makes me forget my immediate concerns. Though I fight the urge to lose all sense of control, so mustering all my self-discipline I end the embrace and give him a serious look;

"Oh I know that look," he grumbles playfully and I maintain my composure even though my lips threaten to twitch upward in a smirk.

"You are returning to the guard?" I ask and try to keep my voice even.

"Yes, with or without my Father's permission!" He replies firmly and I roll my eyes. "What?"

"Stop fighting him at every hands turn, he is only concerned for you...I am concerned for you!" I say and jab my finger towards his chest; "I won't stop you but I will insist you take care of yourself!"

"Clara! I am fine!" Thranduil groans in exasperation and turns away from me, but I follow nonetheless - I follow him right into his chambers and straight to his bed. He is not getting to walk away from me after dropping that bombshell.

"No you think you're fine, but you're not, even the healers say so!" I reply with a determined look, as I stand by and watch him undress, tapping my foot in annoyance.

"I do not care for what the healers have to say; I am perfectly capable of doing my duty!" He snaps and tosses his tunic at me in irritation. Then he slides into his bed and pulls the covers quite gruffly above his head, "Goodnight Clara!"

"Oh no you don't!" I hiss as I clamber over the bed and continue my chatter; "You are no more capable than Aradan at the moment, and I don't care how many scary monsters you have faced in the past. Right now you are still weak, another serious attack and you might not have the strength to recover from it!"

Thranduil sighs loudly and stretches behind him to retrieve another pillow, then crushes said pillow over his head and clamps it in place with his arm. I scowl at his immaturity and yank at the edge of the pillow;

"You are such an unreasonable, overgrown, elfling!" I huff as I haul and pull against his iron grip, "Stop it! Just stop it and listen to me for a change!"

"I am sleeping leave me be." Is his bored reply and in my frustration I lift another cushion and thrash it down hard against his side.

"Fine!" I grumble and haul myself out of his bed; "I hope you dream of goblins!"

With that said I angrily storm across the room so infuriated that after everything tonight he still won't talk to me about this. I hate the idea of him returning to the guard, I wouldn't mind so much if I knew he was strong enough, but he still struggles to anticipate movements on his left side. It is much slower in reflexes than his right and that will slow him down in any fight. If he gets seriously injured again I don't know if he'll have the faith to pull through. His mind is still in turmoil and I know he isn't at peace with himself yet, the slightest upset could crack him. I don't think he realises how vulnerable he really is!

By the time I reach the hallway there is a whistle of movement and I spin just in time to be smacked up the face with a pillow. Once I recover from the complete shock of the attack, I stagger forward and grip the door posts to scowl furiously at the culprit. Thranduil sits upright on the bed and returns the same annoyed scowl;

"Where are you going?" He gripes and folds his arms about his chest.

"Away...like you want me too!" I mutter and place my hands on my hips threateningly.

"I do not want you too," he replies and outstretches his hand to me. "I was not expecting you to give up that easy!"

"Then stop pushing me away, I said I wouldn't stop you returning to the guard but at least take my concerns seriously!" I growl but return to his side anyway, because I have no self-respect or pride and he kills me with his manipulative eyes.

"I will try," he murmurs and I snuggle into his chest while he wraps the blankets around me. I know this is a little unorthodox but I hate sleeping alone, I still struggle with rest, and Thranduil can barely rest at all without reoccurring nightmares. He tells me he sleeps better with me around him; he maintains he can find peace in my quiet spirit. Though we only rest for a few hours anyway, so we just consider this our time together, for in truth it is often the only time we do have to just be with each other without being crowded.

"You will break my heart Thranduil I swear it!" I groan into his chest and press a kiss to his shoulder, were the scars have faded to silvery white stretching veins. "Just promise me you will be sensible, if not for me then for Legolas."

To my surprise he just laughs wearily and tightens his grip around me; "You are letting your imagination run away with you meleth nin, I told you there was no threat to us before and I mean that."

"Then why are you being so secretive?" I accuse and prop myself up on my elbow to glare at him.

"Because I knew you would react like this," he actually has the audacity to smirk. "I cannot sit in a cave and waste away Clara. I need to have a purpose again and before you my purpose was to defend my people."

"I know that is what frightens me," I grumble and he gives me a perplexed look. "The elf you were before had a tendency of pushing his limits to the extremes. Just promise me you will not run off looking for a war to throw yourself at, or some balrog that you want to challenge for the fun of it?"

"No absolutely no balrog's or wars, just deadly boring orc and goblin raids...maybe an unsuspecting troll or two?"

"Thranduil!"

"I am teasing you," he laughs again and buries his face in my neck, "You should know by now that it is my love for you and Legolas that will stop me from being so reckless. I just need to feel useful again, besides if I have to sit through one more painfully boring council meeting I will lose what is left of my sanity, and my temper!"

"Oh No!" I cry in alarm and then snigger, "The last time you did that you verbally abused an elleth, caused a complete scene, smashed up your study, and then proposed to me! Hmm maybe I should just insist you stay in those council meetings, for when you lose your temper it always seems to work out quite nicely for me."

"Ahaha your wit amuses me," Thranduil smirks and rolls his eyes, "And if I do recall things correctly you helped me smash up my study, in fact I believe you started it."

"I am glad I amuse you!" I grin and roll on top of him, "I think maybe I did start that, but you never finished it," and with a longing smile I kiss him quite feverishly, because I hate bickering with him and I see no sense in hounding him over this.

I see his point and I get it, once a warrior always a warrior, it is in his mind-set and I understand the need to feel useful again. I just hope that his warrior's heart will not lead him into trouble, but I guess that is the price I have to pay for loving a solider.

Thranduil deepens the kiss between us, and seems to be quite relieved that I have dropped the subject. To celebrate he lets his super self-control waver for a bit, and I enjoy his long and lingering kisses trailing the length of my neck and along my shoulders. I let my hands roam and get lost in his long hair, and repay him in kind with slow searching kisses of my own. There is nothing I love more than to be wrapped up in his embrace, for it is my sanctuary - a place to feel loved and cherished. When we reach the stage in which we can take no more without crossing a line, we rest for a little while and I am satisfied when I feel Thranduil's grip on me slacken as he drifts into dreams. He really doesn't sleep enough, so it is always a small victory on my part when he relents and rests.

The night slips by without me even realising and I too slip into peaceful dreams. When I eventually stir it is because someone is incessantly knocking the main door to Thranduil's chambers. I blink robotically for a few moments, and prop myself up frowning groggily at the sound. Thranduil groans audibly into his pillow, his face scrunched up in irritation at being disturbed. It can't be that late anyway - at least early enough to still be deemed appropriate to have guests - so I give him a quick peck and whisper for him to stay put. I slide out of the bed and quickly smooth out my hair and dress before answering the door.

"Can I help you?" I ask as pleasantly and as brightly as post nap allows. The ellon standing at the door bows swiftly and produces a sealed envelope;

"I am sorry to disturb his highness but an urgent council meeting has been summoned, his presence is required," the auburn haired elf bows again, I only note now his warrior apparel, something is wrong!

"Of course," I mutter and take the envelope from him, "Inform the King he will be there shortly."

The elf bows again and quickly strides off, leaving me standing in the door staring down at the seal on the envelope. I know that seal I have seen it before, I quietly shut the door and wander over to Thranduil's desk and start rummaging through the letters until I find a seal that matches.  It is the seal of Imladris, of Lord Elrond himself? What is so urgent that requires a council meeting at this hour, I dread to think up the answer to that!

"Clara?"

I jump and turn to the dishevelled and half sleeping form of my love, who at this present time looks extremely confused. He blinks against the light of the candles and scrubs his face in attempt to bring himself around;

"What is wrong? Who was that?" Thranduil yawns his voice gravelly with sleep, as he wanders lazily towards me.

"One of the guard," I say and hand him the letter; "He gave me this but he didn't say why, he just said an urgent council meeting has been called and you need to show your face."

He takes the envelope from me and turns it over in his hands, a deep frown marring his previously peaceful features. I scuttle past him and retrieve his tunic and robes, then persist in dressing him. I hand him off a cup of water to see if it will brighten him up a bit, and he gratefully takes it.

"Legolas?" He suddenly splutters half way through gulping down the contents of the cup.

"It is alright I assume he is sleeping, but I will stay the night you just hurry up!" I scold harmlessly and shove him out the door.

"Clara?" he pauses and takes my hand, a worried look passing between us, "I swear I have no idea what this is about?"

"I believe you," I mutter, though I do question his honesty but he does look quite frazzled by the whole thing. "But you will tell me once you know?"

"Yes, I promise," he replies and gives me one last soft kiss before I push him away from me, and insist he gets a move on.

I watch him disappear with a certain amount of anxiety; this does not sit well with me! Why on earth would Oropher react so urgently to word from Rivendell? I bite my lip and hug myself trying to put notions of war out of my head, but the thought won't leave me. I feel sick at the thought of Thranduil being forced into war, he would not survive, not now.and not as he is...they would kill him. I sigh loudly and quickly head for Legolas' chambers, were I find the sleeping bundle peacefully dreaming. I curl up on the settle by his bed and watch over him, silently praying to whatever entities that are there to not let my fears become a reality, I have only just found my family I don't want to lose them.

It is late morning when Thranduil returns from the council, and he acts quite relaxed and unconcerned as he greets Legolas and I with many cuddles. I have been painting with Legolas all morning and he is suitably covered in all sorts of wonderful colours, so I send him off to wash up and he obliges with the promise of an early lunch. This is all just a cover as I am more interested in what Thranduil has to say;

"Well?" I ask as I lift the bubbling teapot overhanging the fire and pour the contents into his cup; "What was so urgent?"

"Lord Elrond has called for a council of the elven powers to discuss current issues," Thranduil replies evenly and tentatively eyes me over the rim of his cup.

"And what are those issues?" I press and slide into the seat opposite him.

"Growing concerns over recent unrest, how it affects us as a collective race and I assume he wants some sort of agreed plan of action drawn up, if the unthinkable happens."

"What is the unthinkable?"

"War."

I inhale sharply and keep my gaze fixated on the tea swirling in my cup. I don't know what to say, all I know is I really did not want to hear that. There is a long silence and then I feel Thranduil's fingers curl around my hand, I startle at the touch and lift my gaze to meet his;

"Just whispers Clara, it is only an if,' not a 'when,' besides Adar is not keen on being involved even if there is a war." Thranduil's words are so confident and genuine that it would be easy to believe them, if I was not already privy to the fact that according to Tolkien a war did happen. Yet things are so different here I was sincerely hoping the books got it all wrong, and I guess I still am holding vainly onto that belief.

"When do you leave?" is the only thing I manage to murmur as I fight the irrational tears from my eyes.

"In three days," Is his even reply and I nod robotically in understanding, "but I won't be going alone."

"What?" I blink through the stupid tears and frown.

"You are right Clara, you should not be kept in the dark, this affects you just as much as it does me so you will be joining me," Thranduil squeezes my hand and gives me a small smile. "Besides I do not want to be parted from my son unnecessarily, and he will not be parted from you."

"So I am going as his nanny," I laugh and roll my eyes, though I could just crumple with relief that I will not be left here on my own.

"No!" Thranduil corrects me sharply, "You will be going as my future wife, and a lady of this realm. It is about time I get to show you off."

"You mean cause another scene?" I chuckle but my heart literally aches at the word wife, and tears begin to prick my eyes again...oh I am such an emotional wreck these days. "Is your father okay with this?"

"Of course not," Thranduil snorts, "but he agrees that Legolas should come with us, it seems he does not trust you to be left completely alone with him, and he accepts that if Legolas goes then so do you."

"We are a team." I giggle and suddenly feel quite apprehensive at the thought of leaving Greenwood. I have never been outside this place before, this is quite the big adventure for me and I am literally vibrating with excitement. Thranduil seems to guess my sudden change in mood and laughs brightly;

"I hear Imladris is quite an interesting place, plenty of art for you to see, maybe they will even let you show off some of your talents?"

"Let's hope so!"

xXx

The next three days go by in a blur of activity as we prepare to depart Greenwood, and the majority of them are spent with me arguing with Oliel as to what I should bring with me. I literally do not want to carry any more than necessary, but Ollie would have me carry everything but the kitchen sink, and I actually believe if she could get that into a saddle bag she would! Though we eventually settle on two gowns, a simple one and a more regal gown, just in case there is a glittering gala I am expected to attend. A few essentials, and my ivory knife, that isn't actually a weapon but a glorified gardening tool, still it makes me feel safe.

To travel in she sources me some wonderful garments from Gilron, they are so regal that I feel too plain to actually wear them. There are the usual sturdy leggings and high leather boots, but the long tunic that fits over this is a wonderful silvery green and is fitted at the waist but flowing at the hips, the material ends just below my knee, cut away in all the right places to make riding easier. This is not the most exquisite part, the best piece is the long hooded cloak, the outer colour is just a natural greyish brown but the inner fabric is a startling golden green made of the softest velvet. There is a light silken inlay in the hood, which wraps around my mouth and nose to keep the dust and dirt of travelling from irritating me, which I personally think just makes me look all the more mysterious.

I feel suitably dressed when I emerge in the courtyard with a very excited Legolas. The small team of guards are dressed in their official armour and even the horses are gleaming in the late morning sunlight. I let my eyes scan the crowd until they land on a familiar friendly face, and I suddenly wave to gain his attention.

"Clara!" Aradan welcomes me with his usual flurry of affection, and then tackles a shrieking Legolas into his arms. "Come with me young master, your father wishes for you to ride with him."

I giggle as Aradan pretends to toss Legolas on top of Sirdal, the great black stallion just lazily stomps his hoof in boredom. I agree with him I want to get going, I am definitely ready for some sightseeing. I lop over to Rochael who stands behind Sirdal and easily hoist myself onto her back - my riding skills have vastly improved and I have found it is something I truly enjoy. I enjoy the freedom of it, and the exhilaration of the speed, a bit like how I enjoyed driving before. Aradan finishes helping Legolas and then mounts his own grey horse, before joining me and smiling brightly;

"You ready for this?" he asks and eyes me questioningly.

"Born ready!" I exclaim and he shakes his head at the poor joke.

"Do not slow us down Clara," he calls over his shoulder as he nudges his mount forward, "It is a full day and nights ride until we reach the outskirts of the wood, we will not rest until then."

"Well let's hope you don't fall asleep at the Helm then mellon nin!" I snigger and he turns to stick his tongue out at me in a very childish manner, which I love and do the same in return. However our teasing is cut short when there is a sudden change in the atmosphere and I am aware of the approach of a group of ellyn.

My eyes fall instantly on Thranduil, and I feel that familiar pang of desire and pride, as he strides quite confidently towards Legolas and I in his finest armour, slightly grander than that of the other guards. He reaches me and places a kiss on my hand, before swiftly checking my horse over and making sure I am comfortable. I am always touched with his concern and tenderness over me. He mounts Sirdal and wraps an arm around Legolas to give him a quick cuddle, before the King finishes giving his last orders and receiving a stunning horse that is whiter than snow and practically exudes majesty. I feel slightly gutted for Rochael, she will never be that white, so I stroke her neck sympathetically.

Oropher is dressed in the deepest greens and silvers, and looks every inch the elegant and graceful King that he is, with one nod from him Aradan shouts a command and we are off. Clattering forward at a brisk trot, along well travelled roads that I assume lead out of the King's realm.

For the first several hours I am quite interested in my surroundings. Thranduil or Aradan will ride beside me for a bit and point out interesting sights, but soon I grow tired of the same scenery and it is all I can do to amuse myself. By nightfall Legolas has found his way to me, and drifts off into an uncomfortable sleep resting against my chest as we amble along. Unfortunately when the sky turns grey our pace picks up again for a last push to the borders of the woods, where we will rest for a few hours, the sudden jolt has Legolas awake and grumbling. He is tired and irritated, and to be frank so am I, I am very much looking forward to a break and a rest.

When I think I am about to die of boredom, we mercifully slow down and Aradan heralds for the company to stop. I practically throw myself off Rochael with such glee that I get funny looks from the well travel hardened warriors around me. Thranduil finds me and hauls a very grouchy Legolas off the horse and into his arms, and the three of us saunter towards a hastily erected shelter for his majesty. Once there Oropher helpfully takes his Grandson and settles down on the ground with him to rest for a bit, Thranduil motions for me to do the same but I am just so happy to be walking on two legs that I end up aimlessly wandering around.

It is in my dazed exploring that I see smoke rising in the distance, I squint and make out the shape of a settlement not far from us. Curiously I wander back to the encampment to inquire as to what elves live there, but I seem to have not been the only one that has seen the smoke, as Aradan, Thranduil, and Oropher are engaged in a debate. I sidle up to Thranduil and eavesdrop into the conversation;

"I hear their chieftain died in a clash to the north, we have not met their new leader?" Aradan speaks quickly and with a flat disinterested voice.

"It is probably wise to make an appearance and greet their new chieftain," Thranduil mutters, though his tone suggests it is the last thing he can be bothered doing.

"Yes," Oropher nods in agreement, "Though my only concern is that we still hold a truce with these common wood men, I should like to know does their young lord still remember his Grandfather's allegiance to me?"

"Do you wish me to make an impromptu visit?" Thranduil asks rather drearily.

"That would be wise," Oropher replies. "Take Aradan and a few guards, send our condolences over the passing of his father and inquire if we may take rest in their lands for the day? You will know by these requests if he is reasonable or not, though I am sure he is, he is only a child probably terrified by the responsibility. Be nice Thranduil do not intimidate him into a friendship."

Aradan stifles a laugh through a snort, and Thranduil gives him an amused smirk but nods for him to follow his orders. My ears have pricked up at the word men, these are mortal men, I have not been in the presence of humans for so long that I almost forgot they existed. I am intrigued and I would very much like to see this mortal town, if just to remember what it was like to be human;

"May I come?" I ask suddenly and Thranduil gives me a bemused look.

"Why?" he asks and literally looks amused by the suggestion, "It would be dull, they are just humans Clara, their culture is backward."

I have to remind myself that Thranduil does not know that technically I was a human before he met me; I doubt I will ever be able to share that morsel of truth, because it is illogical and so much time has passed now that it barely matters. I give him a pleading look and push the issue; "I would still like to see, if it is not too much to ask?"

"Alright," Thranduil shrugs, "but you will ride with me, and stay with me the whole time we are there, do you understand?"

"Why are they dangerous?" I ask suddenly worried that this was a bad idea, but Thranduil and Oropher both just snort back amused laughter at the suggestion.

"Not to us," he replies and takes my hand, "but they are men and I do not trust them."

"Why?" I know my questioning sounds very childish but I don't like this haughty attitude they are taking over these poor men. It is almost mocking and it is not something that I have experienced before, but I guess to elves men would appear foolish. Still I was once human and I feel a little offended by the attitude, though I work hard to keep that from showing.

"You will see," Thranduil laughs as he pulls me up behind him on Sirdal, "Do not grumble to me if you are repulsed by these mortals."

"I doubt I will be repulsed!" I mutter and wrap my arms around his waist, as we set off flanked by Aradan and three other guards. "I am sure they are lovely."

"Trust me meleth nin, there is nothing lovely about humans!"

**********************************Oh, ho ho! Thranduil be insulting us mere mortals...there's a surprise! And he doesn't know his bride to be was once a human girl...now this could get interesting! *rubs hands* uh oh...trouble be brewin' me thinks!
