Chapter 40 ~ Crunch
17:55, 18 August 2013Chapter 40
Crunch
“You are full of surprises Master Baggins.” I heard Gimli say. Some growling and shouting noises came our way. I had heard the goblins.
“To the bridge of Kazadum.” Gandalf said. We ran out the doorway. With me lagging behind a little drawing small painful breathes. As we ran, Orcs seemed to pop up all around us chasing us. Soon they were all around us. They had formed a circle around us, so we stopped running. I drew huge gracious breaths. All the screaming died down a little and suddenly it was dead silent.
The silence was interrupted by a large growl. Suddenly one of the corridors started glowing orange. There was another growl and all the Orcs started to scatter. They climbed up the columns away from us, shrieking as they went.
“What is this new devilry?” Boromir asked. The glowing grew brighter and illuminated the hall.
“A Balrog… A demon from the ancient world. This foe is beyond any of you. Run!” He shouted. Not again, I thought wearily. We all took off running towards what? I don’t know. We entered a doorway and climbed down them. They ended and a chasm stretched out beneath us.
We ran down the other stairs as quickly as we could. There came a point where there was a gap in between the stairs. It was about and meter and a half wide.
“I won’t be able to jump across.” I said, holding my chest and breathing heavily.
“We’ll see about that.” Legolas said smirking. He wrapped his arms around me and leaped across. For a moment we were airborne with his arms wrapped around me. All to soon we landed and he let go of me to catch the others. Arrows whistled past us as he helped everyone across.
Everyone except Aragorn and Frodo. The stone staircase beneath them began to fall.
“Aragorn!” I shouted in terror. He climbed up before he could fall to his doom. I sighed in relief. The space was now almost tree meters now. I started to panic. What if they don’t make it over? I asked myself. I refused to answer myself even though the images of possibilities swarmed my mind. Suddenly another chunk of ceiling fell. It the stairs above them leaving them a small patch with no escape. The stone pillar started making some horrible crunching noises.
The stone started tiling towards us. Their rock hit ours and they jumped to safety. I ran over and hugged Aragorn but quickly pulled away. I backed up wiped my face only just realizing it was wet.
We ran down the rest of the stairs. As we ran the rock they were standing on fell to the side.
We came to a huge hall with fire lacing the outer edge of it. Before us was a tiny bridge only wide enough for one person to walk on.
“Over the bridge! Fly!” Gandalf shouted at us.
“Gandalf!” I shouted. He didn’t reply. There was a roar that seemed to come from the fire. I shouted his name again, but he didn’t answer.
Out of the flame stepped this massive creature. It had flames covering its black body and had two horns coming out of his head. He stepped forward and roared.
“GANDALF!” I screamed.
He turned and ran with us to the bridge. I ran across last with Legolas in front of me. I reached the other side safely and looked out over my shoulder at Gandalf. He hadn’t moved. He was at the beginning of the bridge. Facing the opposite way.
“GANDALF!”
I tried to run forwards but Legolas wrapped his arms around me and held me tight against him. I struggled against him still shouting Gandalf’s name.
