"I am telling you I have a bad feeling!"
"Come on man, it's just my sister being rebellious. Once we talk to Stefan you'll see."
"Fine" sighed Malik and they approached the vampire who just closed his locker.
"Hey Jeremy, Mal."
"Look, Elena's got to let me know if I'm supposed to cover for her. Jenna's cool with the two of you but you guys are pushing it."
"What are you talking about?"
"You and Elena. Look, I'm glad you guys are back together but if she's gonna sleep over..."
"Hold on a minute. We're not back together."
"She didn't stay at your place last night?"
"No, I mean I saw her at the party but that was it. She didn't sleep over."
"Because her bed hadn't been slept in and Mrs. Lockwood said that her car was still in the driveway. Where is she then?"
Both of them turned to Malik who just let out a sigh and answered in a song-song manner while had a smug look on his face.
"I told you so!" after sticking his tongue out to Jeremy he scratched his head and continued in a normal tone. "I'll get Bonnie see if we can figure out a way to find her."
Stefan rushed away and Jeremy left for class while Malik pulled his phone out and texted his sister.
Once he got the text to her whereabouts he rushed there but it seemed Stefan found her first.
"I can't undo the tomb spell, Stefan. Even if I wanted to. It took both me and my Grams to undo it the first time."
"Not even with Malik? I mean his powers..."
"Not happening" clarified Malik. "That spell was put there for a reason, power or not I will not risk our lives to pull of something that level."
"But I can open the door, right? I can talk to her?"
"I don't see why not" responded Malik putting an arm around Bonnie's shoulders. "But we both know she's not gonna tell you anything, not without something in return."
"I know but I have to do something. I have no idea who has Elena; I have no idea where she is."
"What if there was another way to find her?" offered Malik and exchanged a look with his sister.
While Stefan looked confused, Bonnie nodded at Malik and they all began to leave. They went to Alaric's room where Jeremy joined them after receiving a text message from the Bennett twins.
Malik set up a map on the table and pulled out candles around it, Jeremy immediately walked to him and began asking his questions while he was also quite excited.
"How does this is work?"
"I'll use your blood to draw energy for the tracking spell. You're blood related; it'll make the connection stronger" answered the warlock before Bonnie interrupted quietly.
"You sure you're okay doing this?"
"Yes Bon" responded Malik with a smile. "My reserves are larger than yours and you used a lot of magic yesterday. It's best if we divide and conquer."
"Alright, Alaric said we've got to clear out of here within ten minutes. I've got weapons, he stocked me up" said Stefan as he walked into the classroom then turned his attention to the others.
"Are you ready?"
"Yeah, can't believe this is the first time we doing this for real"
"You've done this before?" asked Stefan intrigued but seeing the boys purse their lips and look away while Bonnie giggled and answered.
"Yeah when they were like 6 and pretended to be..."
"That's enough Bonnie! Or I can spill out a few secrets about you as well" warned Malik somewhat serious, but mostly playfully.
"Alright" answered the girl with a smile and raised her hands in surrender.
Malik cut Jeremy's hand and guided him so that his blood would fall on the map right around where Mystic Falls was. Malik concentrated to cast the spell, as he began to channel the candles' flame they flared up slightly and the blood began to merge into one dot before it began moving on the map. They all watched it eagerly until the blood stopped and Malik opened his eyes.
"There. She's there."
"That's 300 miles away!"
"No, Malik. We need a more exact location than that! Argued Stefan to which Malik turned to the vampire with raised eyebrows and a disbelieving look.
"I'm not Google maps man. That's as close as I can get."
"We can map it, aerial view will show us what's around there, help us narrow down the area" offered Jeremy immediately.
"Perfect. Call me with whatever you find."
"No, I'm not gonna just sit here. What if she's hurt okay? —"
Malik felt something warm dripping from his nose, wiping it off he got the blood off seemed that no one realised it apart from Bonnie, her eyes widened and stepping closer grabbed his arm gently.
"—Or worse? What if she's...?" continued Jeremy but Stefan interrupted him, trying to calm him down.
"She's not. You three go back to your house just in case. I'll call you the minute I find her."
"Well, you can't do this alone."
"He's not. Let's go" came the voice of Damon from the door but Malik refused to look.
"You're coming with me?"
"It's Elena" stated the vampire and the brothers left in a hurry.
Once they were gone Malik relaxed a little but Bonnie immediately went off on him slightly annoyed but mostly worried.
"This is exactly what I was worried about, you're pushing yourself too hard!"
"This was just a warning Bonnie, I'm perfectly fine" responded Malik and they began walking out.
Jeremy drove them back to his where they went upstairs and going into Jeremy's room Malik was in the bathroom freshening up when he heard them talk.
"Alaric just left with Jenna. He's getting her out of the house for a while so she doesn't ask questions about Elena. Look. I pulled this up based on that spot on the map, there's nothing for miles except for this old house."
"Did you send it to Stefan?"
"Yeah. I hate sitting here, waiting like this."
"Hey, she's gonna be fine."
"You don't know that."
"No I don't."
There it was again, the creeping feeling slowly climbing up inside his brain that he could not explain. How he knew what was going to happen and at the same time the sensation of Déjà Vu was overwhelming.
Walking to the bathroom he ran the water and washed his face when his hands began to shake slightly and grabbing the sink looked into the mirror. Around his eyes his skin began to turn charcoal and it began to spread out until suddenly he heard Jeremy shout.
"Bonnie!"
Malik immediately stopped the water and bolted from the bathroom, rushing in there saw Bonnie chanting while her body shook and nose bled, something in her hand was burning away until it disappeared.
"Bonnie?" asked Malik stopping in front of her.
She smiled but then blacked out. She fell backwards unconscious on Jeremy's bed. Jeremy tried to wake her by shaking her but it didn't seem to work.
"Bonnie! Bonnie!"
Malik rushed around the bed and placed his hand on Bonnie's forehead and focused on her. Jeremy looked at Malik who after a moment let out a relieved sigh and moving his hand away spoke gently.
"She'll be alright... just needs a little rest."
"I can't believe this... first Elena now Bonnie!"
"Don't worry Jer" spoke Malik and picking up Elena's hairbrush from the bed sat down and held his hand out to Jeremy. "Bonnie will rest for now but I can try and check on Elena."
"It won't be too much?"
"I have a feeling I know what I need to do."
Jeremy nodded and as they moved from the bed Malik placed a few candles around them placing the brush on the floor. Loosening up the large bracelet wrapped it around both of his hands loosely, held onto the brush with one hand while he got Jeremy to hold his free hand. Closing this eyes he focused all his thoughts on Elena, until suddenly with a push of energy he felt light.
Opening his eyes, he stood in and old building, looking around he noticed Elena standing there talking to another woman.
"Who are the originals?"
"Trevor and I have been running for 500 years. We're tired, we want it over. We're using you to negotiate ourselves out of an old mess."
"But why me?"
"Because you're a Petrova Doppelgänger. You're the key to breaking the curse."
Malik turned to the woman shocked, before looking back at Elena walked around her taking in more of the place.
"The curse? The sun and the moon curse? What do you mean I'm the key? The moonstone is what breaks the curse."
"No, the moonstone is what binds the curse. The sacrifice is what breaks it."
"The sacrifice?"
"The blood of the doppelgänger. Which means, in order to break the curse you're the one who has to die."
Malik felt a pull and suddenly he was back in Jeremy's room, his head hurt slightly but he tried to hide it as Bonnie began to stir awake. Malik let go of Jeremy's hand and getting up with Jeremy walked to Bonnie.
"How are you feeling Bon?"
"I'm fine"
"Here, drink this" spoke Jeremy handing over a glass of water.
"Thanks."
"What happened? You scared the hell out of me."
"It's nothing"
"It wasn't nothing, Bonnie" argued Jeremy while Malik got up from the bed and leaning against the end of the bed watched the other two.
"I've been doing a lot of magic lately. It wears me down" admitted the girl and glanced at Malik.
"When I'm worn down, I take a nap. You were... you were unconscious."
"Witchcraft has its limits. If I push too hard, it pushes back" explained Malik gently, earning Jeremy's attention so he continued and pointed at the Grimoire. "It's all in there. Think of it as a reminder that we're not invincible."
"Please... don't tell anyone" asked Bonnie looking at Jeremy.
"Why not?"
"Because it's a weakness and I don't want certain people to know that."
"By certain people, you mean Damon."
"She means anyone who can hurt us" interrupted Malik. "No matter how powerful we are... there are consequences."
"I won't tell anyone, okay? I promise."
"It's hard, you know? Our grams is gone and our dad... he doesn't want to know about what we are. He hasn't since mom left. We're all alone in this. Even the two of us are different with our power limits and abilities... we try to help each other but it's hard when we don't have someone who's been through this."
"It's how I feel a lot of the time, alone."
There was a long pause Malik looked between the two as they stared at each other, until he cleared his throat making them realise that he was right there. Jeremy quickly turned to the candle and decided to change the subject.
"Do you think that worked?"
"I have no idea."
"Did you see anything?" asked Jer looking at Malik.
"Yeah, I managed to find Elena, she's in that house you've found. However I believe her kidnappers are two very old vampires."
"Is Elena..."
"She's safe, they don't want to hurt her. More like they are using her for something else."
"At least we know that" sighed Bonnie while Malik looked around and continued.
"I'll give it more time then I'll dive back and see what's happening"
"It's dangerous for you to keep doing that" warned Bonnie.
"I know Bonnie, but I need more information... because if my hunch is right... I won't be able to keep my powers sealed away too long."
Bonnie gulped and seemed worried while Jeremy looked between them before he spoke carefully:
"What does that mean?"
"We will find out" answered Mal with a smile and walked out of the room.
He went to the kitchen to grab a bite, he wanted to make sure he was in a good condition when he tried to find Elena again.
This was something new.
Actually being able to look around and not just forced to see visions of it indicated change in his magic. Whether that was good or not remained to be seen.
Once he devoured his sandwich he walked back upstairs but instead of joining Jeremy and Bonnie who were comfortable on the bed, Malik went into Elena's room.
Looking around he got out the candles and setting them on the floor in a circle he sat in the middle with a few things that belonged to Elena around himself.
Her diary, her plushies and pictures.
Sitting down he loosened his bracelet and wrapping it around both his arms loosely he got comfortable and ready. Closing his eyes began to chant quietly again, the familiar sensation rushed through his body and felt the pull towards Elena.
As he opened it again he was elsewhere but the same house, looking around noticed another vampire he assumed was Trevor. As he looked up the girl came back but there was another vampire in a suit. Suddenly he heard a voice in his head saying Elijah. It sounded like Elena but the girl did not open her mouth.
Malik was nervous and remained next to Elena when suddenly the man appeared in front of Elena and leaning closer sniffed her neck.
"Human. It's impossible. Hello there" Malik gently put his arm in between them, trying to protect Elena. "We have a long journey head of us. We should be going."
"Please, don't let him take me."
"One last piece of business and we're done" spoke Elijah again and walked toward Trevor.
"I've waited so long for this day, Elijah. I'm truly, very sorry. You trusted me with Katerina, and I failed you."
"Oh yes, you are the guilty one and Rose aided you because she was loyal to you and that now I honour. Where was your loyalty?"
"I beg your forgiveness."
"So granted."
Trevor smiled but Elijah smacked Trevor's head clean off his body making both Malik and Elena shocked while Rose began to cry, anger rose in her.
"You...!"
"Don't, Rose, now that you are free" spoke the original calmly and turned to Elena. "Come."
"No, what about the moonstone?" tried Elena desperately making Malik gulp and wish she wasn't so rash.
"What do you know about the moonstone?"
"I know that you need it and I know where it is."
"Tell me where it is."
"It doesn't work that way" stated Elena bravely.
"Are you negotiating with me?" questioned Elijah with an amused smile and turned to Rose for answers.
"It's the first I've heard of it."
The moment Elijah turned back to Elena Malik panicked, he knew exactly what Elijah was about to do. Immediately he began whispering and placed his hands over Elena's eyes.
Clearly his compulsion did not work, which made Elijah look down and noticed the necklace around her neck.
"What is this vervain doing around your neck?"
He pulled the necklace off her neck and threw it away, grabbing her head tried again but Malik kept whispering.
Elijah seemed surprised for a moment seeing how it did not work. The vampire was certain the girl did not have vervain in her system. That was until an odd idea popped into his head and looking deeply into Elena's eyes began focusing.
Malik watched and wondered what he was doing until suddenly Elijah turned and looking at him dead in the eye spoke gently.
"What a surprise... I haven't seen anyone perform this spell for centuries yet alone a young warlock like yourself."
"What?" came the confused voice of Rose and Elena who could not see anything, but Elijah did not answer just looked at the boy.
"I can't have you interfere I'm afraid. Don't you worry, the doppelgänger will be kept safe. I give you my word."
Malik looked confused until suddenly Elijah smiled and Malik was pushed away into a white corridor with doors, but before he could have looked around he was shoved forcefully out of there into the darkness. A vortex like feeling surrounded him before he landed back in Elena's room.
A high-pitched noise rang through his ears and his head hurt like a maniac.
Looking around his vision was blurry, his hands were shaking but as he calmed himself slowly the side-effects seemed to ease rapidly.
Once he was able to get up he put everything back to their place and walked into Jeremy's bedroom quietly and sitting in his chair leaned back, closing his eyes rested till they heard anything.
For the first time... someone could have given him answers. Elijah knew about this spell when even Malik himself wasn't certain how it worked. He hoped Elena would be back safely but also... he was hoping that he could find out more form the vampire.
Bonnie was sleeping in Jeremy's bed while the two boys were awake and waiting for any news from the others.
They were quietly sitting there just reading or playing when they heard keys rattle and the door open, both boys sat up immediately and Jeremy called out.
"Elena?"
Bonnie woke up immediately and exchanging a look they rushed out the door. Elena was going up the stairs, arriving on the top Bonnie rushed over to her and embraced her best friend.
"Are you okay?" asked Jeremy with tears in his eyes.
"I'm okay. I'm okay" responded the girl and looked at Bonnie." I got your message."
Bonnie cried and embraced her again before allowed Jeremy to embrace her as well.
Malik just smiled leaning against the door when Elenalooked at him and smiled, mouthing a mute thank you to the boy. The warlockjust nodded and kept smiling until they finally went home.
In the morning just when he was going to leave for school he got a text from Elena asking him to meet her. Malik raised an eyebrow but agreed to meet her. It seemed a little off but given what have happened he did not want to question it too much.
The doppelgänger arrived at the agreed time and drove them both to Salvatore Boarding House.
"What are we doing here again?" asked Malik looking at Elena who just shrugged and answered shortly.
"Not sure, Stefan said to meet him. Apparently it's important."
Malik just nodded and they both got out of the car, walking to the door Elena knocked on the door and soon enough Damon opened it.
"Hello, Elena. Judgy"
"Is Stefan here? He called. He said it was important."
"Right this way."
They both entered the house, but Malik noticed something in Damon's eyes that he has not seen before. His curiosity was peaked but he knew he could not get answers out of the vampire... walking into the building he remained closer to Elena and looking around soon enough Stefan arrived as well.
"Hey"
"What is this about?" asked Elena and looking behind Stefan they noticed Rose arrive which got both Elena and Malik surprised and slightly worried. But before Malik could have fried her brains Stefan immediately reassured them that she was there to help. Not to hurt Elena or anyone.
While Elena seemed to relax slightly Malik raised an eyebrow and taking a seat next to Elena focused on the vampire.
"Okay, you have to understand I only know what I've picked up over the years and I don't know what's true and what's not true. It's the problem with all this vampire crap but Klaus, I know he's real."
"Who is he?" asked Malik looking at the vampires.
"He's one of the originals. From the first generation of vampires" explained Stefan.
"Like Elijah?" asked Elena confused, but Rose was quick to disagree.
"No. Elijah was the Easter bunny compared to Klaus. He's a foot soldier. Klaus is the real deal."
"Klaus is known to be the oldest."
"Okay, so you're saying that the oldest vampire in the history of time is coming after me?"
"Yes" stated Rose but Stefan was quick to argue.
"No."
"What they're saying is, I mean if what she's saying is true... And you're not saying it so I don't kill you –"
"Which I'm not."
"– Then we're looking at a solid maybe."
"Look, Elijah's dead, right? So no one else even knows that you exist."
"Not that you know of" added Rose carelessly.
"That's not helping."
"Are we sure he's dead?" asked Malik looking at them but he just received a confused look from them all. "I mean he is an original, if they were that easy to kill... wouldn't have Katherine figure out a way to do it?"
They looked at each other but then Stefan turned to Elena immediately.
"Look, I've never even met anyone who's laid eyes on him. I mean, we're talking centuries of truth mixed with fiction. We don't know if he's real. For all we know he could just be some sort of stupid bedtime story."
"He's real and he doesn't give up. If he wants something, he gets it. If you're not afraid of Klaus, then you're an idiot."
"Alright, we're shaking. You made your point" retorted Damon turning to Rose.
Elena however did not comment, she simply just got up from the sofa without a word and put her bag on her shoulder.
"Where are you going?"
"School. I'm late."
"Let me grab my stuff, I'll go with you" offered
"It's okay, I know where it is... Mal?"
"I actually need little witchy here for a bit longer" admitted Damon which made both Stefan and Elena surprised but once Malik nodded at her she just left without another word.
Seeing her reaction Damon just turned to Rose with a small smirk.
"She's in denial."
"Shut up, Damon" reprimanded the younger Salvatore and went after Elena.
Stefan left as well, Damon waited till the door closed before walking to the sofa sat down opposite Malik and looking at the warlock began talking.
"Rose here told me something interesting that happened while at the mansion. Elijah tried to compel Elena and failed twice..."
"And?" asked the boy leaning back, he knew where Damon was going with that.
"First her necklace... but the second time he spoke of a pesky little warlock stopping him from it. Come on Mal-Mal don't be shy"
"I fail to see what you're getting at here."
"It means you can look around in places now which can be handy. All we gotta do is find Klaus so how about you do that little hocus-pocus and get to it?"
Malik just groaned and getting up from the sofa grabbed his bag.
"It is impossible to find someone from nothing. If he is as secretive as it looks, he must have witches hide him anyway"
"Come on, you're the anomaly or whatever. Surely you can whip up a locator spell to find him."
"Even if I could" interrupted the warlock with a tired tone and got up from the sofa. "There is no guarantee they wouldn't figure out it was me. Which would bring them right here where the doppelgänger is. If you want to find Klaus... try a different way."
Malik walked out of the house and leaving it behind him just aimed for the school. It took him a while to get there, he missed a few classes too but later on he joined Bonnie.
"Jeremy invited me to play pool with him... is that weird?" asked Bonnie carefully.
"Well considering you're horrible at it yeah" came the cheeky answer but seeing her unimpressed face Malik just shrugged. "I don't know what to say Bonnie, especially of late you two have been getting along. He's alone, you could use some company that is not about to die constantly or an actual vampire. Go with it."
"Alright... let's just have a good time"
Walking into the Grill for a moment Malik was overwhelmed by a weird tingling sensation but as quickly as it came it was gone. He blinked a few times and walked after Bonnie until suddenly someone called out to her.
"Hey Bonnie"
"Hey, Luka. How was your first day?" asked the girl looking at the boy at the table with his father. Malik remained quiet but watched the two of them silently.
"It was great. I would like to introduce you to my dad."
"Hi, I'm Bonnie Bennett, this is my little brother Malik Bennett."
"Doctor Martin, Jonas Martin. It's nice to meet you Bonnie and Malik Bennett. Would you like to join us?"
"Oh, we're meeting a friend but he's not here yet so... sure."
"Oh yes, please have a seat"
She sat down next to Luka but Malik remained standing next to Bonnie who looked at the newcomers and fired off her first question.
"So, where did you move from?"
"Louisiana"
"That's a big change" responded Malik with a raised eyebrow.
"I'll say" came the unhappy answer from Luka but Bonnie was quick to reassure him and attempted to ease his disappointed feelings.
"It's not so bad here"
"It's looking up" answered Luka looking at the girl.
Malik rolled his eyes and let out a small disgusted noise and looked away from them.
"Bennett, huh? I knew some Bennett's when I did my residency in Massachusetts. Do you have any family from Salem?"
"Actually we do" answered Bonnie surprised while Malik slowly turned his eyes towards the older man.
"What do you know? Small world, right?"
"Sometimes it seems a little too small" commented Malik looking at the man dead in the eye but Bonnie noticed Jeremy arrived, giving her the opportunity to break up the conversation.
"Oh, there's our friend. It was nice to meet you, Doctor Martin."
"I will see you at school" added Luka earning another groan from Malik who just walked off to Jeremy.
"Yeah" responded Bonnie with a small smile and touched his shoulder.
Immediately she felt something, a familiar but slight odd feeling which she couldn't quite explain. She left to join Jeremy but turned her head to look at them once more.
"Sorry I was late, are you okay?" asked Jeremy concerned.
"Yeah"
It was a bit surreal... Malik sat on the side munching on his fries while his sister and Jeremy were playing pool. There was something going on between them and it made him feel weird. He couldn't quite put his hands on what was going on just yet but the little suspicions were already bugging him on the back of his head.
He continued to watch them play... more like Jeremy clearly winning and Bonnie just being really bad at it. Bonnie tried to shoot but she hit the side of the cue ball, causing it to barely roll to the side.
"You are bad" admitted Jeremy while still laughing.
"I told you."
"Well, feel free to cheat if you need your dignity back" teased Jeremy making Bonnie smile but retort anyway.
"Come on, hit the ball"
"Alright, I got a winner guys. I got a winner" appeared Luka next to Bonnie with a big smile, Jeremy just looked up and responded.
"Get ready, this slaughter is almost over"
Jeremy shoot the ball and continued the game while Luka watched him but Bonnie leaned closer and asked the newcomer.
"So where's your dad?"
"Um, I'll see him back home."
As the game continued Malik went to get some drinks while Bonnie sat down since she didn't really enjoy loosing far too many times. But as they looked at each other both of them smiled and Jeremy returned to his game. As Malik got to her and handed her a drink Luka joined them and sat opposite Bonnie.
"Hey guys. I'm sorry about earlier, my dad is not very subtle with the whole Bennett/Salem question. He picked up on you two, he was just fishing around, he didn't mean any harm."
"I felt something too" admitted Bonnie but her brother just stayed quiet.
"I know. That's why we're having this conversation right now. He uh...doesn't like for anyone to know." Stated Luka and unscrewed the lid on the salt shaker and poured some salt on the table. "But we were both worry that you would bail us"
He looked around and put his hand above the salt. As he lifted his hand, the salt floated up shocking the two Bennetts instantly.
"He just wants us to fit in here for once. It's tough, being different."
"You're a witch?" asked Bonnie still slightly disbelieved.
"Well, we prefer the term warlock. Isn't that the term your brother uses?" asked the boy with a smile and looked at Malik.
The boy however did not seem impressed, no... he seemed emotionless and guarded which made Bonnie look at him in surprise.
"What's wrong Mal? We finally met someone like us."
"No Bonnie, we met someone like you" stated the boy coldly and turning to Luka continued. "The timing is odd for your arrival, so if you excuse me I will stay with my friend."
"We mean you no harm" reassured Luka which made the boy stop and looking at him had a small smile on his face.
"Let me get into your head... and I'll be the judge of that."
Seeing their looks Malik just gave them an 'I thought so' look before going back to Jeremy. As he got up there he sat down making sure neither Luka nor Bonnie could see him. They were there for a bit but as they were ready to go he noticed how Jeremy looked at Bonnie. Seeing her and Luka happily chat away and smile he seemed hurt, which made Malik put his arm around his shoulder and walked out of there with him.
"Don't worry man, Bonnie just met someone who's like her. It will wear off."
"You think so?"
"I don't like him" admitted Mal. "Something is off about him, and I will find out what."
