3. It's Like Neverland
18:26, 29 June 2024"Let's go," Brenda said, annoyance dripping from her voice. "Jorge is waiting."
They whispered quickly amongst themselves on the trek back. Frantic words spewing from all of their mouths.
I could feel the nervousness radiating from the group. And in all honesty I was nervous too. One wrong move and they would be sent right back to WCKD.
I looked back to the blonde boy as we got closer to Jorge. I noticed he walked with a slight limp.
"Did you get injured from the lightening too?" I asked and he looked up. "I can take a look at it if you want."
His Adam's Apple bobbed as we swallowed. A strange look replaced his nervous one.
"No I'm quite alright," he said with a slight nod.
"Jorge," Brenda said as we walked into his office. "They're here."
He was leaned over the radios, trying to make them work. He has been trying to find a signal for the Right Arm for over three years now, and one might think that it should be time for him to give up, but that wasn't Jorges' style.
I stood beside the blonde boy and looked up to him. He glanced down and our eyes locked again.
My stomach flipped and I quickly looked away as heat rushed to my cheeks.
"Quiet," Jorge snapped.
"Damn it," he sighed when he couldn't get a clear signal, and stood up. "You ever get the feeling that the whole world is against you?"
The group looked to one another as he asked some questions. Jorge poured himself a glass of water, mocking the group as he took a long sip. The one that was hit by lightening licked his lips and let a quivering sigh.
Jorge was being cruel.
I was quickly pulled back from my zone out as one of our men pushed Thomas down.
The blonde boy stepped forward, but a man grabbed him and held him back. I reached over and put my hand on his arm. He looked over to me, concern swirled in his eyes.
"It's okay," I whispered and he seemed to relax slightly.
Brenda stood from the couch and grabbed the scanner, quickly holding it to Thomas's neck.
She and Thomas argued for a bit before she smiled and confirmed that they were really from WCKD.
Before long, and much to my protest, they rag tag group were hanging upside down above the Cranks.
I paced back and forward in Jorges' room as he interrogated them once again.
"Jorge wont let the men sell them," Brenda finally said.
"Why not?" I asked, my fear came off as harsh.
"They mentioned the Right Arm, and you know how Jorge is about that fantasy. He'll think they will be licked."
I nodded. The Right Arm was like Neverland to Jorge. He wanted to get there more than anything. Maybe there was a hope for them after all.
Then Jorge rushed in suddenly and bang throwing his stuff into a bag.
"What is going on?" I asked.
"Yeah, are you going somewhere?" Brenda asked.
"We all are, pack what you need and do it quietly," he whispered. Not wanting the men to hear.
I grabbed my prepacked bag from behind the couch. You never knew when an emergency might arise.
Quietly, I snuck out to get the group. Brenda was close behind.
The swooshing of helicopter blades sprung to life over us. A loud voice on PA erupted through the warehouse making it hard to think over all the noise.
When I reached them, I saw that the girl was trying to untie them. She looked up at me with frantic eyes.
"Let me help," I said and quickly used a hook to pull the boy with dark hair to the edge.
