Chapter Six

23:39, 3 July 2022

"We don't even know what this stuff is. We don't know who sent it. Or why it came up here with you. For all we know, this thing could kill him," Newt said to Thomas as we stood over Alby.

He looked even worse that this morning.

"He is already dying. Look at him, how could this possibly make it any worse?"

"Wow Tom, really bright outlook you have on things," I scoffed.

"I'm serious Joan, he looks bad," he pointed to Alby.

"Yeah, I see him and I agree," I nodded.

Thomas and Teresa talked to me about all they discussed on the look out. While I couldn't remember anything, I did tell them that the first name I thought of was Thomas and that I think I knew him before all this.

He agreed with me, but it seemed like he was holding something back.

They both actually seemed distant, like they weren't telling me the whole truth about something. I think they even keep a few feet away from me at all times.

They were really hiding something.

"Come on Newt," I said.

"Alright, alright. Do it," Newt said.

"Thanks Newt," I said and patted his arm.

As Thomas leaned over to give Alby the shot, Alby grabbed him and began thrashing him around.

"You shouldn't be here! You shouldn't be here," Alby yelled into Thomas's face.

I quickly grabbed the syringe and stuck it into Alby. He calmed and his breathing went to normal.

"Well that worked," Jeff and I said in unison. "You good Thomas?"

He nodded and straightened his shirt.

"Well, that worked. Okay, from now on... someone stays here and watches him around the clock," Newt said with violent hand gestures.

They told me that Alby was the first one up in the maze. Newt must've trusted him more than anymore and seeing him like this obviously worried Newt more than anything.

"Hey Newt, I'm sorry for attacking you and holding a knife to your throat," I quickly said as I remembered today's earlier events.

"No worries," he was still focusing on Alby.

Gally opened the door, just in time to miss the hard work of course.

"Sundown, Greenie. Time to go," he said to Thomas but then quickly locked eyes with me.

I quickly looked away after I noticed I was staring like a total creep.

Why was I staring at Gally?

I mean, he wasn't bad to look at.

No, stop it Joan. Focus on what's going  on. I shook my head, trying to clear it of my strange thoughts of Gally.

I walked out of the shack biting my lip in thought, when I realized it was finally dark.

The day was over.

What a hell of a day. It seemed like it went on forever.

I looked up and saw the stars. I couldn't remember the stars very well.

These were vibrant and bri-

"Hey!"

A voice from behind me made me jump.

I turned and saw chuck.

"Jeez Chuck, you scared me," I put my hand over my heart.

"Sorry Joan. I was wondering if you wanted to go help me steal food from the kitchen for Thomas?"

"Of course Chuck, lead the way," I smiled.

Thinking back through the day, I dont even remember eating. As if to answer my thought, my stomach growled.

"We are gonna steal some for me too," I walked faster.

Once we got the food and got to Thomas, I sat down and ate while Thomas did.

As I took a big bite, I noticed Chuck was holding a small figure. It looked like a little wooden statue of a person.

"Hey Chuck, that is awesome. Who is it?" I asked with a full mouth.

"It is for my parent's," he said. "Gally taught me how to carve it."

I smiled at the thought of Gally teaching Chuck how to carve. My cheeks turned hot when I realized I was thinking about Gally again.

Thomas stood and took it in his hands.

"You remember them?"

"No. But I mean I must have them. And I'm sure wherever they are... they miss me. But I can't miss them because I don't remember them," he looked away.

"Hey, I know they miss you Chuck. How couldn't they? You are the best," I wrapped my arm around his shoulder and pulled him close.

"Let me see that," I said and held my hand out for the figure.

Thomas gently put it in my hand.

I rotated it slowly and smiled, "Yeah, this is your parents. You have its nose!"

Chuck laughed.

"What do you think you are going to find out there tomorrow?" He asked Thomas.

"Uh, I don't know. But if there's a way out, Chuck, me and Minho are gonna find it," Thomas stated mater of factly.

"Yeah and if they don't, I will," I rubbed Chuck's arm.

I went to hand his figure back to him but he held his hands up.

"I can't remember them anyway. But maybe if you guys find a way out, you can give it to them for me. I'll let you get some sleep," he said and got up.

"Um, no," I grabbed his hand and put the carving in it.

"She's right Chuck," Thomas said. "We are going to get out of here and you are going to give it to them yourself. All of us."

I smiled at the boy and nodded.

"Okay, goodnight," he smiled and began to walk away.

"Goodnight rugrat."

"Goodnight Buddy," Thomas sighed.

"It’s sad," I said and leaned against the edge of stick door.

"What is?"

"Seeing him have no hope. He is just a kid and he already has no hope, Thomas. He can't even remember his parents," tears came to my eyes but I quickly wiped them away.

Thomas didn't say anything but I heard him sit down.

"What do you think is outside the maze?" I questioned.

"Freedom," he said.

He was so short with me. He talked to Teresa for a long time, yet he wouldn't talk to me.

Why was that?

"I hope so. Do you think getting out of here is going to be hard?"

"You have more questions than me Bugs," he said with a scoff.

Bugs. That was familiar. Too familiar. And it rolled off his tongue like a second nature.

I remember something. I remember him calling me Bugs when we were kids.

"Who are you?" I turned and looked at him.

He looked up at me. His brown hair looked black in the dark, but so did mine.
