Chapter 13

16:56, 21 September 2014

We get cut off by Conor’s phone ringing.

How cliché.

He climbs off me and gets off the bed. I watch his face drop as he answers the call.

“Shit, I’ll be there in a second” he panics, ending the call.

“What was that about?” I frown, watching him put his shirt back on.

“Jack’s in trouble” he mumbles. I sort my hair out quickly and put my shoes on. “You’re not coming with me Lucy, you’re drunk”

“Yes I am. He’s my best friend”

“Fuck sake” he moans, running down the stairs.  He ignores his Mum asking where he’s going and bolts out the front door. I follow behind him and run to wherever Conor’s going. After about 3 minutes of running, we get to the park and see a huge group of people in a huddle, shouting stuff.

Conor quickly catches his breath back and runs over to the crowd.

“Get the fuck off him now” I hear Conor shout and hit someone.

Shit. They’re in a fight. I run over to them and see Jack sat on the floor, holding the blood coming out of his nose. Conor was punching the life out of the guy I suppose hit Jack, so I go over to Jack and help him up.

“Jack, are you ok?” I ask.

“I’ll be fine” he nods. I get a tissue out of my pocket and hold it to his nose. This is horrible. I feel sick watching Jack looking like this and Conor beating some guy up for doing it. I see Alex dragging Conor off this guy.

“You piece of shit” Conor shouts at the guy on the floor. He gets up and walks away, not saying anything back to Conor. Alex and Conor walk over to me and Jack. “Jack, I’m so sorry” Conor sighs, pulling Jack in for a hug. Why is he apologising?

“It’s not your fault. Besides, I got a few hits in” Jack laughs. None of us find anything funny and I’m still stood here, holding the tissue up for Jack. He’s so drunk, worse than last night. Mum’s going to go mental at me. I know it’s late.

“Jack we need to go home, you’re a mess” Conor says, holding Jack up.

“No Conor, I’m staying for another drink” he frowns. I take the tissue off his nose to see the blood smeared across his face. The bleeding has stopped though, thank god.

“No you’re not, come on” Conor argues, pulling Jack off me.

“Get off me” Jack snaps. “I’m having one more drink, ok?”

Conor sighs and just looks at his drunken brother. Jack picks up a fresh can of beer from the floor and starts drinking it. He looks and me then hands me a drink. I take it off him, not wanting to argue with him, but too drunk to say no to it anyway.

I take a mouthful of beer before looking at Conor, sat on the floor with his head in his hands. Jack grabs me and starts laughing.

“What?”

“I don’t know” he laughs again making me laugh. We fall to the floor and start laughing again. It's like a replay of last night, only this time, we’re on a park.

“Right, come on, we’re going home” Conor snaps, interrupting mine and Jack’s fun.

“But we’re having fun” I laugh with Jack.

“No Lucy, shut the fuck up. We’re going now”

“Fuck off, Conor” I snap.

“What did you just say?”

I drag myself of the floor and repeat myself, “Fuck off, Conor”

“Fuck you, Lucy. I came here to get Jack out of this mess but you’ve made things ten times fucking worse, just like you always do. I’m sick of it. You always mess things up. Look what you’ve done” he rants pointing to Jack that’s now passed out on the floor. “He’s in this mess because of you! You’re the one that encouraged him into having that drink. You’re the one that decided to come here thinking you could wave your fucking magic wand and everything will be ok. Well guess what? It’s fucking not. I don’t even know what to do now”

Ouch.

“I mess things up? You’re the one that got Jack into this fight. I didn’t force him to drink anything! He offered me a drink” I shout before sitting on the floor.

Conor’s POV

She sits on the floor and starts crying, still drinking the rest of her beer. She won’t stop.

I regret what I just said but it was kind of true. Everything would be ok if she just stayed at home. I walk over to Jack who’s talking to Alex on the floor. I turn around and see Lucy throwing up on the floor.

“Are you alright?” Lois asks me. I didn’t realise she was here.

“No” I snap. “Sorry, Jack just won’t come home and he’s doing my head in”

“I think Alex is talking to him about that now, don’t worry about it” she smiles sympathetically. I hear Lucy’s phone ringing. I turn around and see her led on the floor either passed out or asleep. Either way she wasn’t going to answer that phone. I walk over to her and take it out of her pocket. It’s her Mum.

“Her Mum will go mental if she finds out that she’s drunk out here” I sigh.

“Pass it here” she says. I give her the phone and she answers it. When she ends the call, she puts the phone back in Lucy’s pocket. “Right come on, we need to get these two home” she frowns. I walk over to Jack and tell him that we need to go home. Surprisingly, he agrees with me, so I ask Alex to help him get home while I get Lucy.

I pick up Lucy, bridal style, and walk all the way home with her in my arms, leaving Lois and the girls on the park. Alex and Jack follow behind me. I have to take her back to mine because I can’t let her go to her own place like this.

We get home and I warn Jack before we go inside to be as quiet as possible. Mum probably knows that we’ve been out drinking but I can’t be bothered with her comments about the blood all over Jack and stuff.

We all creep upstairs, Lucy still in my arms. I put Lucy in my bed and she instantly curls into a ball and gets comfortable, her eyes still shut. I put the covers over her and creep into Jack’s room. He gets into bed and Alex just watches him.

“Thanks” I smile slightly at Alex.

“No problem” he returns the smile.

“Are you staying here tonight?”

“No, I need to get home” he says and I just nod. I see Alex to the door before going back upstairs to sleep in the spare room. Lucy probably wouldn’t want me sleeping with her after what just happened.

Lucy’s POV

I wake up the next morning with a massive headache. I look around the room. Why am I in Conor’s room? I get out of bed and go to the bathroom. I have a wee and wash my face. I’m still in my clothes from last night and I smell of sick.

What happened?

I come out of the bathroom and go back into Conor’s to get my shoes. I put on my shoes and grab my phone from the side table. I have 6 missed calls from my Mum. I walk downstairs and walk towards the front door.

“You’re awake then” I turn to my right and see Conor walking out of the kitchen with a glass of water.

“Obviously” I snap.

“Where are you going?”

“Home?” I say but it comes out as a question.

“Ok” he sighs before walking upstairs. I roll my eyes and walk out of the house. Mum is going to kill me.

I take some chewing gum out of my jacket pocket to get rid of my beer breath. When I arrive at my house, I spit out the chewing gum and walk inside, preparing for being screamed at.

“Mum?” I shout.

“In the kitchen” she replies. I walk into the kitchen and smile. “Did you have fun then?” she asks.

“What?”

“At Lois’s? I called you last night and she answered telling me you were going to be sleeping. I don’t know why she answered your call”

Erm...

“Oh right. Yeah it was fun” I shrug, going along with this story.

“Are you going to explain why Lois had to answer? And why you didn’t call me to tell me you were sleeping?”

“Oh yeah um, I left my phone with Lois in her bedroom and I was in the kitchen. I was going to call you when I got back from the kitchen but she told me you already knew” I explain. Does this even make sense?

“Right...” she frowns, unconvinced. I can tell she doesn’t believe me. She starts sniffing the air, “Lucy, you stink”

“Thanks Mum” I roll my eyes and walk upstairs to get a shower.

I take a shower and think about the whole situation. Lois was at the park last night... I think. I’ll have to call her and ask her about it. And thank her for getting me out of shit.

I get out of the shower and put my clothes that smell like alcohol and sick in the wash. I get to my room and sort out my hair before calling Lois.

“Hey, are you ok?” she answers on the second ring.

“Yeah I’m fine. Um, what happened?”

“Well you had a fat ass argument with Conor and then you wouldn’t stop drinking with Jack. It was like half past eleven and you wouldn’t stop being sick and you passed out, then your phone went off. Conor said your Mum was going to go mental at you so I answered the phone for you and told her you were sleeping at mine, and then Conor had to carry you back to his house because you couldn’t go back to yours. Alex helped Jack get back and then I stayed out with the girls” she breathes.

Oh my god, this is crazy.

“Thank you so much. You know, for calling Mum and stuff”

“It’s fine! That’s what friends are for” she jokes, making me laugh. “I’m surprised you’re awake. It’s only eleven in the morning”

“Me too. I’m going back to sleep now though, I’m so tired and I have the worse headache imaginable” I moan.

“I’m not surprised!” she jokes. “Well I’ll leave you to it, see you later Lucy”

“Bye” I smile and end the call.

Wow. I needed to sleep this off. I get into bed and fall to sleep in the blink of an eye.

I wake up to my phone ringing. It’s 3pm.

“Hello?” I answer.

“Hey Lucy, are you ok?” Jack asks.

“I think I’m ok now” I laugh. “How are you?”

“I’m good. My nose hurts”

“Aw!” I squeal. He sounded cute.

“Why did you leave this morning?” he moans.

“Because I had an argument with Conor last night and I didn’t want to stay around him” I sigh.

“Oh yeah, I heard about that”

“Do you remember what happened last night?” I laugh, knowing he was so drunk.

“No, Conor had to tell me everything!” he laughs. “That’s the worst I’ve ever been”

“Same!”

“Well I was just calling to check on you. I hope you’re ok now”

“I’m fine, thank you. And I hope your nose gets better” I laugh.

“Me too” he laughs. “Bye!”

“Bye!” I say, ending the call.

I need to get rid of this headache.
