Chapter 13

23:22, 18 March 2021

In no time at all they were done and dusted with lunch, hopping up and clearing away their picnic blanket.

"And where do you think you're going?" Eddie questioned, as Richie began to walk in the opposite direction of the path that would lead to the ice cream parlour

"To get ice cream," Richie stated in an 'isn't that obvious' kind of way

"It's this way doofus,' Eddie pointed left, to the long path bending around a little field.

"But that takes ages to go down," Richie whined, knowing that the path winded around the trees a lot and was dangerously close to where henry bowers and his father lived.

"But it's so much safer!"

"Safer! " Richie exclaimed, "As if, that lunatic bowers is down there,"

"He's nowhere near the path!"

"You know full well that a 200 metre radius is close enough for the both of us, hell it's close enough for anyone if you think about it."

"What do you suggest we do then," Eddie said, hand on hip, waiting to hear Richie's marvellous solution.

"We go this way," Richie smiled, motioning with his hands to a path that led into the trees instead of around them. Eddie glanced skeptically at the route, what if it was dangerous, he didn't want to die, what if they got attacked? The point is he didn't want to go down that route because of one simple reason, Richie was an idiot, an idiot that could be trusted with some things, but from Eddie's experience, certainly not all things, so a number of things could happen if they took that route, and Eddie wasn't sure he had all the medical supplies to prepare for any kind of situation.

"But what if-" he began, frowning, ready to point out the negatives if this plan

"If we go this way, it'll be shorter, we won't get tired as easily," Richie interrupted, "And there's a high chance we won't run into anyone, especially not bowers. Come on Ed's, " the taller boy said playfully, "You're not gonna get skinned alive, we're only going to get ice cream. It'll be quick too, we walk through these trees, cross the little river by the barrens and what do ya know? We're at the ice cream place."

Richie walked over to where Eddie was standing, "Don't be such a grumpy little man," he said in a childish voice, poking at Eddie's unamused face.

"Get the hell away from me," Eddie said, smacking Richie's finger away from him. The smaller boy sighed, and then murmured, "Fine, we'll do it your way."

Richie grinned triumphantly and the two started down the path, walking away from the bright sunshine into the much darker trees.

"But just know," Eddie said, glaring up at the taller one, "If we die in here, then I'm blaming you."

"Sure thing spaghetti man, tell you what, I'll pay for the coffins myself,"

"How many times have I told you not to call me that?"

"Won't be stopping me," Richie smiled sauntering along ... "Are we there yet," Eddie panted, reaching into his fanny pack for the 3rd time on their journey to pull out his inhaler.

"Uh.... well, we should be," Richie said, looking puzzled and scratching his head, as the two of them stopped walking for the first time in 20 minutes.

Eddie pulled the trigger on his inhaler, the awful taste flooding his mouth once again, naturally annoying him a little. "What do you mean we should be? Are we lost?" Eddie asked, losing patience, he just wanted some ice cream, but no, they had to go and get lost in some secluded forest thing in the middle of nowhere.

"We're not lost," Richie said quite confidently, "I remember this place," he said looking around, "I just... ya know,"

"What Richie?"

"I just don't remember how long the path was....or where to go from here" Richie said in a quiet voice

"I swear to God if you've dragged me out here for nothing-"

"Heyyy, we both agreed to come down here," the boy said defensively, "And we both wanted to get ice cream,"

"Yes, but now we're lost. And who's fault is that."

"Well it's not just my fault,"

"So we are lost!" Eddie exclaimed, "I fuckin knew it, I fucking knew it!"

"Hey! Come on that was a trick question,"

"Maybe it was. But that doesn't matter now, were lost in the middle of this shitty wood, you don't know what to do, I don't know what to do and we're probably going to end up wandering around here for ages and before you know it some wild animal is gonna find us and we're gonna end up getting attacked, and if it bites us, I don't have the antiseptics in my fanny pack, I only have bandages, but you can't put those on without cleaning the wound and we don't have anything to do that either, Oh and my bifocals, they were in my second fanny pack, damnit I knew I shouldn't have taken them out this morning, what if we die Richie, what if I end up dying here, with a giant chunk of my arm missing in a because we wanted to get ice cream," Eddie slumped down onto the ground leaning against a tree, out of breath and hyperventilating a little, raising the inhaler to his lips and pushing the trigger a couple of times.

The boy was genuinely scared, what if they were really and truly lost? A thought dawned on him, much scarier than the rest, what would his mother say? This made him panic all the more. "Hey hey hey, slow down there casanova," Richie said, rushing over to where Eddie sat, vigorously pumping the trigger. He snatched it out of the small boy's hands and put his own hands on Eddie's shoulders.

"Listen to me. We're fine. We're not lost. And we'll be out of here soon enough okay?" Eddie nodded silently, taking the inhaler back from Richie and letting the taller boy help him up into his feet.

"So how are we getting out?"

Richie thought for a minute and then perked up, "I know! We'll go back the way we came." That would have been a perfect plan too, except when the boys turned back, they realised that the path they were on, had three others leading off of it, and they had no clue which one they had come down.

"Oh for god's sake Richie," Eddie groaned, staring at the three oaths hopelessly

"What?!" The other exclaimed, "I tried didn't I? It was a good idea.... Maybe.'

Eddie massaged his temples, and closed his eyes,

"It was you that wanted to go down this path in the first place, you know if you'd just listened to me, we wouldn't even be here."

"If I'd listened to you, we'd be stuck on the other road, which you know takes ages to go down! Ages, and we probably would have seen bowers along the way, so don't pin this on me, we both know that this route was safer.," Richie stated, holding his ground.

This shut Eddie up, and he fumbled around with the zip on his fanny pack, "Sorry," he mumbled, "I just don't want to die."

"You're not gonna die Ed's," Richie said with a small smile, " We're gonna be absolutely fine-"

The two suddenly fell silent.

Somewhere off to their right, they heard a twig snap and the rustle of leaves.
