Chapter Two: Complications of the Heart

“ica… America! Hey, get up already! Do you want to waste the day you blasted moron?!” I heard a voice yelling in my ear.

I groaned and tried to swat the voice away with my hand like a fly. I may have heard a voice but in my ears it only sounded like an annoyance. I just tried to forget it and go back to my sleep. I guess all that excitement yesterday made me tired. So tired I didn’t want to wake up.

The voice persisted and I had no choice but to lift my head up from the desk. I felt the pain in my neck from sleeping in such an awkward position and every part of my body was either stiff or asleep. I looked behind me to see where that annoying voice came from and I looked into those familiar emerald eyes. I stared into them for a few moments, gazing in wonder at what I might find if I keep looking into them.

I shook my head and my mind went back to reality. I looked at his face which seemed to be one of grumpy and angry. This was normal for the British dude I grew up with but I always liked the nicer side of him better which nowadays he doesn’t show me nearly as much. I guess I don’t get that privilege anymore. When I became independent he became distant but he was my greatest ally as well. I didn’t really understand it all myself.

I slowly and steadily lifted myself from the seat and with a little wobbling I stood up straight. I scratched the back of my neck, which started to itch suddenly. I yawned as I looked back at Britain. He was crossing his arms but he didn’t seem mad anymore, just normal. I smiled and realized he was blurry.

That’s when I realized I forgot to put on my glasses. I looked back to my desk and grabbed the black-rimmed frames and attached them to my face. When Britain’s face came into clear view I sighed as my vision was back to normal again. I pushed the chair back in close to the table and looked down toward the table.

At first I thought absolutely nothing but the more I analyzed the desk I realized my diary was laying out in plain view. I quickly, in embarrassment, closed the book and stuffed it away into the closest drawer. This action seemed to release a laugh from the tea-loving freak beside me. I turned around in anger and crossed my arms as well.

“What are you laughing about?!” I asked.

“Oh nothing. I just didn’t think you’d get all defensive over a diary. I mean when you think about it I should know everything about you. Actually from the way you were writing you could become a novelist. You always act like a complete wanker but when it comes to writing you’re actually very skilled.” he complimented with a smile.

“What? Seriously?! Wait a minute! You read my diary?!” I yelled in disgust.

“Well you had it open in plain view I just couldn’t resist. I just wondered what was going through your head when you decided to help out the traveling Englishman who was suddenly shot by mysterious horseman. It’s a great story don’t you think?” he explained.

A huge pause stopped the conversation. Why would he ask such a thing? Now I was thinking he was the stupid one. I mean it was pretty obvious what was going through my head when I saw him laying on the ground like that.

“You want to know what was going through my head? Try saving the idiots life who raised me. Do you have a problem with that?!” I yelled as I walked past him and out the room.

The silence spread between our lips for a few very long moments. Only an open doorframe stood between us now. I clenched my fists together. I couldn’t believe he would stoop that low. Why does he even care?

“Britain, I just wanna know one thing. How much did you read?” I asked, my voice lowered.

“I only read what you had written about yesterday, I promise.” came the Englishman’s answer.

“Yeah last time you made a promise it didn’t work out so well.” I told him as I stormed off down the hallway, hands in my pockets.

“America, I!” I heard him yell.

He didn’t come after me as I went to go downstairs. I figured he needed time to think over what I had said. This wasn’t like him. I mean you don’t see him trying to read about anyone else’s secrets so why is he so worried about mine? Is he trying to start a battle with me?

In my head it sounded stupid but the plot was perfect. I mean he had horseman come in and raid the town I’m living at. He ends up getting injured and ends up in the care of the enemy. In the house all the information is there for him to know everything about me. All my weaknesses and everything he needed to beat me.

My heart didn’t want to believe it but my head said otherwise. I kept telling myself there’s no way he would attack me. I mean we have been allies for years but what if he needed money. If he were to take over my country he would take what I have so that means he would get my money as well. That would make sense why he came here in the first place. Was he really my enemy?

I kept doubting everything I was thinking. In fact I doubted everything since I started to disappear. Slowly and slowly I wasn’t going to be here anymore. That scared me more than you will ever know. I didn’t want to make anymore enemies. Even if he might be trying to go against me I can’t be his enemy, not again.

This is the part I always hated. Now I had to go and apologize to him for yelling at him. I always hated swallowing my pride and saying I was wrong about the whole thing even when my thoughts said differently. I had to be the bigger person on this one and apologize first.

I made my way upstairs and slowly made my way back to the my room. I knocked on the door and slowly inched it open. I heard the creak of the door and I noticed the wood staring to chip. I looked into the room and saw that Britain was… gone.

I panicked as I looked around the room to find a trace of him but all I found was a white lip of paper. It was written in his fine handwriting and contained the faint smell of tea. It was definitely Britain. My eyes looked closely to the words on the page.

Dear American,

I know all I have caused is trouble since I set foot on your country so I’m making sure I’m going to stay out this time. You will never again have me making trouble on your land. I leave you this note to tell you that I will never again be in you hair so don’t worry about that anymore. Also I’m sorry for everything.

Sincerely,

England

I gritted my teeth and cursed underneath my breath. Where could he have gone? A moment after the question was asked in my head I noticed the window was open and the curtains were blowing in the breeze. He must’ve gone out the window but why? Why was he in such a hurry to leave? I mean we used to have arguments all the time like this why is it such a bad thing now?

The man I knew never ran away. He was always standing there, waiting for me with a smile no matter what I had done. I had to do the same for him now. Something is bothering him to the point where he’s running away and an Englishman doesn’t give up his pride so easily. There had to be a reason for this and I was going to figure it out.

Without another word I ran downstairs and putting on my letterman jacket I ran out through the front door. I ran endlessly in all directions, hoping I would find a trace of him. Will he ever see that he’s not alone? Will I ever get to reach out to him and make him understand that? My feet kept running forward as I asked these questions in my mind.
