Three Weeks Later

Kayla Greene's POV

Third period—English class. The most boring hour of my life. My teacher droned on about something I wasn't paying attention to, my mind wandering like it always did in this class. I glanced at the clock. Ten more minutes until lunch.

I know y'all are probably wondering what happened after that night at the party.

Well, the morning after I stayed at Chris's house, I went home and told my mom everything. And when I say she was livid, I mean that. She called the police immediately and got a restraining order against him.

As for my friends, they were upset, of course. But I didn't want their pity—I just wanted to move on. I didn't want to talk about it, I didn't want the sad looks, and I definitely didn't want to be treated like I was broken.

The bell rang, snapping me out of my thoughts. Finally. I grabbed my bag and made my way through the crowded halls toward the cafeteria, sliding into my usual seat at our lunch table.

Pulling out my phone, I logged onto Twitter, favoriting and retweeting random posts. Just as I was about to log off, something caught my eye near the double doors.

Jasmine. All up on some dude that definitely wasn't her boyfriend.

Wow. So you're just gonna be out here in broad daylight doing hoe activities when your man is well-known? Bold.

I rolled my eyes and shook my head before typing out a tweet.

@paradisecoke: Ain't wanna see that hoe shit. Ruined my appetite. -.-

My notifications started going off instantly. Smirking, I locked my phone and started playing "Don't Step on the White Tile."

"Hey baybeh," Nia's voice cooed from behind me as she wrapped her arms around my shoulders.

"Oh my God, you sound just like August," I teased, laughing.

"No, I don't! Shut up." She plopped into the seat next to me.

"So, where's my Aug baby?" I smirked.

"Kaylaaa," she groaned, playfully shoving me. "You asking to get slapped."

"I'm playing, I'm playing," I chuckled, sipping on my Capri Sun. "But for real, how y'all doing?"

She sighed. "We good. Taking things slow. I think it's better that way."

"I feel you," I nodded, then frowned. "Oh, and what's up with Dasia all over my Twitter talking about she wanna beat your ass? Since when y'all got beef?"

Nia rolled her eyes. "Girl, I don't even know. I was never cool with her when she was here, so why she so pressed now? But if she wanna fade, so be it." She tapped her nails against the table like she was already plotting.

I shook my head. "Nah, don't even waste your time. Over a boy? Not worth it. You too cute for that. Check her if you need to, but fighting? That's beneath you."

Nia pouted. "But, Kaylaaa..."

I gave her a look.

"Ugh. Fine. Yes, mom," she muttered, rolling her eyes dramatically.

"Love you too, daughter," I smirked, blowing her a kiss.

Before she could say anything back, August strolled up and leaned down, pressing a kiss to her lips.

"Wassup, baybeh," he murmured.

I groaned. "Oh my God, y'all gotta do this in front of me? I hate it here."

August grinned. "Sorry, Kay, can't help myself. Nia my baybeh."

I rolled my eyes, turning my attention back to my phone, liking a few pics on Instagram.

"Wassup, y'all."

My head snapped up, and my face lit up. "Chrissy! I haven't seen you in forever!" I jumped up and threw my arms around him.

Chris chuckled. "Kayla, I just saw you this morning."

"So?" I pouted. "I missed my best friend."

I sat back down, and of course, Chris took the seat right beside me.

"Where's Ty?" I asked.

"He went to Sacramento with his mom to visit his aunt," Chris said lazily, rubbing his eyes.

"Oh," I hummed, watching as he leaned his head against my shoulder. Without thinking, I rested my head against his in return.

"What's wrong, Chrissy?" I whispered, keeping my voice low so Nia and August wouldn't hear.

"Nothing, ma. Just tired," he mumbled, closing his eyes.

I picked up my phone and opened the camera app, snapping a quick picture of us before posting it on Instagram.

@paradisecoke: @fuckyopictures Chrissy always tired #Bffl

Chris groaned. "Kayla, you taking pictures again?"

I laughed. "I'm sorry, Chrissy. You were cute."

Just as I was about to say something else, my mood instantly soured. Jasmine was walking across the lunchroom straight toward us.

Chris must have noticed my face because he sighed. "Kay, please. Not today."

I sucked my teeth and shrugged my shoulder so he could sit up. She was already ruining my energy.

I turned my head away, deciding to focus on Nia instead.

"Hey, bae," Jasmine greeted sweetly.

"Wassup, baby." Chris leaned in and kissed her.

I damn near gagged. Ew. He had no idea where her lips had been. If only he knew...

Annoyed, I grabbed my tray, tossed my lunch in the trash, and turned back to hug Nia and August goodbye. Then I stuck my tongue out at Chris and walked out of the cafeteria.

I had zero patience for the foolishness today.

As I made my way toward the bathroom, a voice stopped me in my tracks.

"Sup, ma?"

I turned my head, my eyes locking with the school's star quarterback. Everybody called him "Coke Boy." Why? Don't ask me.

But one thing I could say?

Lord, this boy was fine.
