Chapter 37- I love you
18:54, 30 July 2019- Clementine's POV
The five of us raced down the ladder, trying to beat the explosion that would soon go off. AJ was safely off already, waiting for us with the rest. Ruby, Aasim, Omar, Violet and Minerva. I could only hope Minerva was actually changed. Watching everyone run into land, I looked back a moment before I kept running forward. "Clem!" Louis shouted. I looked to him in confusion, not even a second before hearing a loud bang. Actually, multiple loud bangs. The boat tipped, set aflame from our explosion. It was then that I felt the giant gust of wind hit me, knocking me over the pier and into the water.
I struggled to breathe, inhaling water and coughing it back out. But it was no use. My tears mixed with the fresh, cold water as I tried to figure out which way was up, and how to get there. I didn't even notice the cold hand on my leg as I fought to stay awake, the edges of my vision going black and fuzzy. I would've lost consciousness, had I not felt the indescribable pain of teeth seeping into my ankle. I screamed under the water, unable to find any source of relief as I felt another wave hit me. It was stronger than the others, I noticed as I fought to keep my eyes open. The mouth finally lost contact with my leg, and I felt someone's hands wrap around my shoulders, pulling me. The elastic keeping my hair up was sinking below me as I saw my long, curly hair in front of me. That was about when I lost consciousness.
- Louis' POV
I saw Clem fall into the water, not hesitating to take action. That's all I needed. "Take the rest back to the school, we'll meet up with you later." I called back, hearing the horse ride off, everyone inside. I took off my trenchcoat, leaving it on the shore as I dove into the freezing water. Somehow, I was able to open my eyes, making out the figure of my girlfriend who was barely moving. I swam further, my lungs starting to ache for air as I pulled her up. It was then I realized something was attached to her. I looked further down, feeling my soul leave my body. There was one of those f*cking walkers, biting into her leg. I saw the blood in the water, swimming down and literally prying it's face off of her. I didn't hesitate to smash it's skull into a rock.
The girl, now unconscious, was in my arms as we reached land, me coughing and gasping for air. But Clementine wasn't moving. My heart raced as I leaned closer, listening for breathing. I didn't hear any, partially due to all the ruckus from the boat. I still felt nothing when I held her wrist. Nor her throat, where you should be able to feel the pulse. Maybe I was feeling the wrong spot. I opened up her jacket, unzipping her hoodie. This was the only way I could help. I lay my cold hand just below her chest, sighing in relief when I felt a faint heartbeat. Okay...I learned this in swimming class.
I pressed my hands against Clem's figure, inhaling and counting to three. I continued, trying my best to preform CPR...with no avail. Last choice, I told myself. I moved to her face, pale and cold. I placed my mouth on hers, blowing into her mouth in hopes it'd do something. Mouth to mouth, I hope I was doing it right. Her body jolted after repeated attempts, the girl shot up coughing. Her head just missed hitting mine, and I watched as the water spilled out from her mouth. "Clem." I said, hugging her. She was wheezing, gasping for air but placed her hand on my arm. "Lou...I." She started. Her eyes still darted around, she was scared and unsure of her surroundings. "Clem, we need to get somewhere safe." I said, watching her golden eyes meet mine in shock. But she nodded, trying to stand before hitting the ground again and groaning. "What the f*ck..." She trailed off.
The realization hit me again as I grabbed her hand. "Clem...you got bit." I said, just above a whisper. Her eyes teared as she looked down, seeing the bite mark on her left leg. "What? No, I...I can't. This can't..." She shook her head, tears starting to roll down her cheeks. "Clementine, we need to get away from here. We'll deal with that later, I promise." I took her hand, helping the girl stand as we tried to get away from the walkers approaching.
Finally somewhere further away, the two of us got to...somewhere familiar. The fishing shack. We were close to the school, and...maybe there's still a chance. "Come on, in here." I urged the weak girl on, gripping her waist tightly to help her balance. She nodded as I opened the door, closing it after us. "Okay, now...what do we do." I said, more as a statement than anything. I looked around the shack. Could we do anything? "Louis." Clem said quietly. "Just a minute, I'm--" "Louis!" She repeated, interrupting me as I turned to face her. Clementine walked up to me, wincing at the pain. She looked into my deep brown eyes, tears starting to form in them. Why does everyone I love have to leave me? "Louis..." She inhaled, trailing off and looking down in guilt.
"I'm so sorry, Louis. I guess my luck finally ran out." She whimpered, wrapping her arms around me tenderly. "It's not over yet..." I cried, touching my forehead to her's as it was getting colder. "Please, take care of AJ for me. Put flowers on my grave, just...don't forget me." The girl cried, touching her lips to mine. I planted my hand on her head, pulling her closer...for the last time. She pulled away, face only inches from mine now. "I love you." I whispered.
Clementine widened her eyes slightly, exhaling sharply as her body shook. "I love you too. Don't ever forget that." She said. I felt something large and heavy being placed in my arms. I looked down, heart stopping. Her hands and mine were now on a large fire axe. "No..." I shook my head, dropping the thing to the ground. "Please--" she started. "Clementine, I'm not doing that to you!" I cried, bringing my hands up to my head. "I don't want to become a walker." Her voice wavered, pleading me to end her life. "I..." I looked down. "Sit down." I said as I picked it up. Her eyes, now bloodshot and drained of life, moved to the wall as she found the place to sit. "Clementine?" I asked, holding the weapon shakily. "Yeah?" She asked back, still eyeing the thing in my hands. "I'm sorry." I said quietly, just before I swung it down.
