Aether and Lumine are gods of love from another world, they have completed their function in their world so they travelled to other worlds to continue doing their jobs.

When they arrive at Teyvat, they immediately notice they will have much work to do as while there are many people in love, most of them don't plan to make a move, are too afraid to do it or don't consider themselves good enough for the one they like.

Cue the two of them travelling around the whole Teyvat to make sure there will not be any love triangles, etc(that's how they met everyone) and then they start pushing the couples together.

But not subtly or how a friend would push another to be with their crush, they make a world wide love contest and have the future couples live together and learn that they feel the same but also to fall more in love(basically a tv show to form couples but they already know who each person will end up with)

The ships are for the writers to decide as it is if Aether and Lumine will have their own lovers.
