Chapter 9
15:07, 14 February 2018"Can we buy all this in London?" - Harry Potter
-------------------------------------------------------
The next morning I awoke to Harry shaking me. Mr. Hagrid was back. I was suddenly wide awake. Light peeked in through the ratted curtains. The storm appeared to be over. I looked over at Harry.
"We're going to buy school stuff."
I nodded. "How did Aunt Petunia and Uncle Vernon take it?"
"You care about what they think?!" He asked me incredulously.
"Not really, but what if they don't let you back in the house?"
"That won't be a problem. Those muggles won't give Harry trouble or Dumbledore will be notified!" Mr.Hagrid interrupted.
Harry grinned and we walked outside. We went to the boat we came from last night.
"How did you get here?" Harry inquired.
"Flew." He answered simply.
"Flew?"
"Yeah. But we'll get back in this. No suppose ter use magic now that I've got you two." He pointed his umbrella at the boat and it sped towards shore. I looked at him curiously.
"Mr. Hagrid-"
"Nona that. Call me Hagrid."
"Um okay, Hagrid, about what you said about our parents,"
He sighed. "I knew you would ask but I might not be the right person to tell you that." Now that just made me more curious. The boat bumped into harbor. Harry and I got off first because I was secretly afraid Hagrid would tip over the boat as he got off.
Hagrid walked towards the busy streets of London as Harry and I followed along. Harry scanned our school supplies list. "Can we find all this in London?"
"If you know where to look." Hagrid whispered and pointed to a familiar, small pub: The Leaky Cauldron. I followed Hagrid and my brother into the pub. A tall skinny man called from across the pub. "Afternoon Hagrid, the usual I presume?"
"No thanks Tom, I'm on official Hogwarts business. Just helping Harry and Cindy find their school supplies." He replied nonchalantly.
Tom's eyes widened. "Bless my soul. It's the Potter twins!" Suddenly everyone in the pub was staring at us. A man came up to me.
"Welcome back, Miss Potter, welcome back!"
A woman approached Harry. "Doris Crockford, I can't believe I'm meeting you at last!" She sounded jubilant.
Then a man in a turban approached us. "Harry and Cindy P-potter. C-can't tell y-you how pleased I am-"
"Hello Professor! Didn't see you there." Hagrid turned to us. "This is Professor Quirrell. He will be your Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher at Hogwarts."
Harry immediately stuck out his hand. "Oh, nice to meet you." He nudged my side when I didn't do the same. This guy gave me the creeps. He eyed Harry's hand warily.
"Fearful, f-frightening subject." He stuttered. "N-not that you need it, eh Potter?"
Hagrid then spoke. "Well we must get going. Lots ter buy."
"Goodbye." Harry said and I gave him a small wave.
We walked through the back door and descended down the flight of stairs. "You see? You're famous!"
"But why are we famous? All those people back there, how is it they know who we are?"
"Like I told your sister, I'm not sure I'm the right person to tell you two that." He then turned to the brick wall in front of us and tapped the bricks with his umbrella. They wiggled and spread apart. Harry gasped in awe and I grinned. I hadn't seen this place since I was four. "Welcome, Harry and Cindy, to Diagon Alley!"
Diagon Alley never failed to amaze me. I looked around in awe. A bunch of kids were crowding around a broom. I sighed in admiration. It was the new Nimbus Two Thousand. Father never allowed me near a broom growing up. I had never actually seen one, but wanted one since hearing Uncle Remus tell stories about my dad.
Directly down the alley was a place I'd never noticed before. It was a huge building with a sign: Gringotts. I was surprised when we headed towards it. "We need to get yer money first."
I was surprised at this. Father always paid for my stuff. I didn't have money. Maybe Harry saved some? Wait, the thought of the Dursleys giving Harry allowance was ludicrous. Hagrid headed for the bank as Harry and I trailed along uncertainly.
We walked in the building. I immediately saw creatures that resembled elves. They were doing all the work. Where were the humans? "What are those?" Harry spoke up.
"Their goblins, smart as they come, stick close ter me, you two." We ran to keep up. We arrived at the front desk. Hagrid cleared his throat. "Mr. And Miss Potter would like to make a withdrawal." I closed my eyes and waited for the goblin to say we had no money.
"And do Mr. And Miss Potter have their key?" He peered down at us. I opened my eyes to see Hagrid emptying his pocket on the goblin's paperwork. The goblin wrinkled his nose.
"Ha! Here's the little devil." He held out a small golden key. "Oh yeah, and there's something else too." I had to strain my ears to hear now. "Professor Dumbledore gave me this. It's about the you-know-what in vault you-know-which." The goblin glanced at the letter and placed it down.
"Very well, I'll have someone to take you to both vaults."
~~~~
"Vault 687!" The goblin, Griphook, called." We stepped off the cart, Hagrid looking slightly green. "Lamp please!" Hagrid handed it to him. "Key please!" He turned the key into a minuscule hole. The vault opened. Inside were mountains, no, oceans of gold, silver and bronze. My jaw dropped.
"You didn't think your parents would leave you with nothing, did you?" Harry's expression mirrored mine. We put a little inside a bag and hopped back in the cart. We went deeper and deeper until Griphook finally called out.
"Vault 713!" We followed him out of the cart.
"What's in there, Hagrid?" Harry questioned.
"I can't tell you, Harry. It's Hogwarts business, very secret."
"Stand back!" Griphook ran a bony finger down the door and it click several times prior to opening. I craned my neck, expecting to see a fortune, or something very valuable, but it was empty except for a small package. Hagrid stuffed the package into his pocket and turned to us.
"It's best not to tell anyone at Hogwarts about this." Harry and I nodded.
~~~~
Hours later we were carrying an armful of packages. "We still need wands." Harry said.
"Wands? Well you'll need Ollivanders, there's no place better. Now why don't you two run along? I got summat to do, won't be long." We nodded and walked to Ollivanders.
We walked into the dusty shop. It appeared to be empty. Along the wall, behind the desk, were shelves and shelves of boxes, presumably full of wands. "Hello?" I whispered. Silence followed. "Maybe no one is here." I whispered to Harry.
"Hello!" Harry repeated louder. A man with white hair slid over to us on a ladder.
"I wonder when I would be seeing you, Potter twins." He leafed through some boxes. "Seems only yesterday that your mother and father were here buying their first wands." He handed Harry and I each a wand. "Well give it a wave!" He said, when we stared at them. Harry and I both aimed at the same place causing boxes of wands to shoot off the shelves. I blinked in shock. "Apparently not. Ollivander said calmly. "Try this." We waved the wands again and a bottle smashed. "No no, definitely not. No matter." He went to the back of the shop. "I wonder..." He took a box out and handed Harry the wand. As he took it his eyes widened. His hair stood on end and he gasped. "Curious. Very curious." The old wandmaker uttered.
"Sorry, but what's curious?"
"I remember every wand I've ever sold, Mr. Potter, and it just so happens that Phoenix thats tail feather resides in your wand gave another feather, just one other. It is curious that you should be destined for this wand when it's brother gave you that scar." The shop had suddenly gone creepily silent.
Finally Harry spoke. "And who owned that wand?"
"We do not speak his name." Ollivanders hissed. "The wand choses the wizard, Mr. Potter, it's not always clear why. But I think it is clear that we will expect great things from you. After all, He Who Must Not Be Named did great things. Terrible! But great."
Then he suddenly turned to me. "We must find your wand now Miss Potter, but I have a hunch as to where it may be." He headed to the back of the shop once more. He returned with a wand covered in intricate swirling designs that looked to be about eleven inches. I felt a type of attachment to it. I picked it up and felt power surge through me. Ollivander looked at me warily. "I had a feeling..."
I gathered up the courage to speak. "I'm sorry, but what's wrong?"
"This wand is made from elder wood. The second wand in existence to be, according to legend. Furthermore, when I made He Who Must Not Be Named's wand, the Phoenix feather snapped, precisely into two pieces. I decided to place half of it in another wand..." He trailed off. I stared into space. The same feather as the person who gave us this scar? What did it mean? We paid Ollivander and thanked him. We both walked out of the store silently.
Hagrid walked up to us. "Happy Birthday!" He was holding a Snowy white owl very much like my own and a box in his other hand. He handed Harry the snow owl. I opened the box. Inside was a golden snitch. I had wanted one for years. Now I had my very own. We thanked Hagrid.
