Chapter 13

Tuesday mornings usually felt mundane, a longing for the weekend already creeping in. But today was different. I could feel an unexpected surge of energy, a lightness in my chest that kept me upbeatโexcited, even. I tapped my fingers rhythmically against the steering wheel, humming softly as I drove to school.
The intimate moments of yesterday were still vivid in my mind, replaying over and over again. I couldn't help but smile each time, my heart fluttering with anticipation.ย
The thought of seeing Yoko again later in class had me buzzingโeverything had changed between us, and now we shared a secret that no one else knew.
As I walked into the staff office, my mind was split between preparing for my lessons and the mix of nerves and excitement I was feeling. Ms. Catherine from the Mathematics Department noticed me and quickly struck up a conversation.
"Good morning, Ms. Peraya, you look better today," she said.
I fought the urge to grin but ended up settling for my usual stoic expression, offering her a small, controlled smile. "Yeah, today's better."
She raised an eyebrow, clearly remembering yesterday. "You seemed a bit downcast yesterdayโcarrying a heavy air around you. We were wondering what happened." She returned the small smile, her eyes warm. "It's good to see you feeling better."
I quickly retrieved the materials I needed from my bag and prepared to leave. "Happy Tuesday," I said, stepping away and heading toward my classroom.
The excitement was still there, a mixture of nerves and joy as I settled into my routine. The students began filing in, their chatter filling the room.
And then, Yoko appeared in the doorway. I glanced up at her, taking in the sight of her presence.
She looked effortlessly beautiful, like someone who had just stepped out of a dream.ย
Her hair, soft and tousled, framed her face with delicate perfection, the light catching the strands and making them shimmer like gold. The white blouse she wore seemed to glow against the backdrop of her fair skin, and the warm earthiness of her corduroy pants gave her a relaxed yet stylish edge.
There was something so serene about her presence, like she belonged in the momentโperfectly at ease by the water, yet in this classroom, she managed to capture my attention entirely. She had this understated charm, with a grace that didn't need to be flaunted.
Her gaze met mine, and in that instant, I felt the air around us change. It was as if the world paused, just for a moment, under the weight of the unspoken connection between us.ย
The way she carried herselfโso calm, yet undeniably electricโmade it impossible for me to look away. Even in this ordinary setting, surrounded by the mundane, she had the rare ability to make everything feel extraordinary.
The class continued as usual, and we dove into one of the world's most celebrated literary worksโSonnet 18 by William Shakespeare.ย
I recited the lines in my usual emotive style, but this time, my words held more weight.ย
As I read, my eyes intentionally found Yoko's, and for a fleeting moment, I felt like I was speaking the poem to her aloneโlike it was my confession, wrapped in Shakespeare's verses.
"Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate:
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And summer's lease hath all too short a date:
Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,
And often is his gold complexion dimm'd;
And every fair from fair sometime declines,
By chance or nature's changing course untrimm'd;
But thy eternal summer shall not fade
Nor lose possession of that fair thou owest;
Nor shall Death brag thou wander'st in his shade,
When in eternal lines to time thou grow'st;
So long as men can breathe or eyes can see,
So long lives this, and this gives life to thee."
After that, I spent a fair amount of time unraveling the complexities of Shakespearean language for a class full of confused students.
The lesson progressed, I did my best to keep my focus on guiding them, helping them search for the right answers to today's assignment. But despite my efforts, I couldn't help but notice Yoko's occasional glance in my direction. Each subtle exchange between us sent a flutter of warmth through me, quickening my heartbeat.
When the bell finally rang, signaling the end of the period, students hurriedly gathered their things and rushed toward the door, eager to move on to their next lesson. I took my time packing up my desk, making sure everything was neat and ready for the next class.
As the room cleared, Yoko met my eyes once again, her gaze carrying a quiet request. She didn't need to speak; I simply nodded, giving her the unspoken permission to stay behind.
Once the last of the students had filed out, I stood and walked over to the door to lock it. The soft click of the lock echoed through the empty room, sealing us in, and marking the moment we were alone.
I turned to face Yoko, and the silence between us felt thick with something unspoken, a quiet yet powerful current of desire that neither of us acknowledged out loud. Her eyes, warm and full of intent, stayed locked on mine.ย
For a moment, everything outside that room seemed to vanishโthe footsteps, the chatterโtime suspended.
I took a step forward, my movements slow and deliberate, as if the space between us held the weight of the world. My hand reached out, brushing against hers with a featherlight touch before our fingers intertwined. It was a delicate and intimate gesture, one that felt far too precious to let go of.
"Hey," she said softly, her voice a familiar melody that made my heart skip.
"Hi, you," I replied, my lips curling into a gentle smile that I couldn't suppress.
For a long moment, we simply stood there, hands held, the world outside forgotten.ย
There was a strange, indescribable tension in the airโan electric charge laced with the unspoken desire between us. Yoko's lips quirked into a mischievous grin, the kind of grin that could belong to a giddy teenager in love.
"So," she broke the silence, her voice light with humor. "Locking doors, secret meetings, intimate moments like this... is this how it's going to be from now on?"
I chuckled, the sound low and warm. "I think we might have to. Like ninjas or assassins."
Her laughter, carefree and full of warmth, washed away any lingering tension. It was the kind of laughter that made everything feel lighter, even though we both knew the pull between us had only deepened.
"Yeah, I think we'd make great hitmen," she teased, her voice teasing, but her eyes betraying something more.
Before I knew it, my body had moved closer to hers, as if drawn by some unseen force. The distance between us vanished in an instant, and my lips found hersโgentle at first, but soon her lips parted, inviting me in.
Our kiss deepened, the quiet intensity of the moment pouring out in that single, passionate exchange. Every emotion I'd been holding onto, all the desire and longing, finally spilled over.
Her arms wrapped around my neck, pulling me closer, and I couldn't help but melt into the kiss, letting it consume me.
It was a perfect blend of sweetness and passion, the warmth of her hands in mine, the steady rhythm of our hearts beating in sync. Everything else faded awayโthe classroom, the world outsideโuntil there was only us.
Breathless, we pulled apart, and I couldn't stop the smile that spread across my face. It felt like joy, indescribable and pure. Yoko grinned, her eyes sparkling with something that felt both playful and vulnerable.
"I can't believe..." she said, shaking her head in disbelief. "I'm really here, kissing you. In this moment, of all places."
I chuckled softly, reaching up to brush a stray lock of hair from her face, tucking it gently behind her ear. "Yes, it's real," I whispered, my voice tender. "I'm here, with you."
The room felt small, but in the best way possible. I closed the distance between our lips again, but the sound of footsteps in the hall brought me back to reality. Glancing down at my watch, I saw that it was almost time for the next class.
"You should go," I said reluctantly, stepping away from her and adjusting my clothes.
Yoko nodded, a small, resigned smile on her lips. "Yeah, I should. Otherwise, Ink will hound me about where I've been."
I smiled, chuckling softly. "I'll see you... later?"
"Of course," she replied, her voice soft, the smile on her lips reaching her eyes. The dimple on her cheek deepened, making my heart flutter.
She gave me one last look, lingering for a moment before unlocking the door and slipping out into the hallway, joining the stream of students rushing by. I stood there for a moment, my heart still racing, watching her disappear into the crowd.
The rest of the day passed in a blur, and before I knew it, the final bell rang, signaling the end of the school day. The rush of students scrambling to gather their things and head off was almost like a blur around me.ย
I sat at my desk for a moment longer, packing my laptop into my bag, shoving the pile of assignments that awaited my grading into my tote.
The halls were gradually thinning as the students poured out, but just then, a familiar face appeared at the door. I glanced up, curious, and my heart gave a small flutter when I saw Yoko She stood there, and before I could stop myself, a smile spread across my face.
"Hey you," she said, her voice warm and inviting, like a melody I couldn't get enough of.
"Hey," I replied, my voice soft, my heart picking up its pace. I walked towards her, closing the door with a quiet click, locking it behind her.
"Got a minute for me?" she asked, her eyes bright, yet tinged with something vulnerable.
I smiled, pulling her gently towards my desk as I sat down, never letting go of her hand.
"For you โ I'll turn forever into now," I said, quoting a line from one of my poems, one I'd never shared with anyone. The words felt like they belonged only here, in this quiet moment with her.
She cleared her throat, and I could sense the nervousness creeping into her voice. "So, I was wondering if I could come over to yours... to go over my poem. I didn't get any feedback on it," she asked, her voice trailing off just a little.
I raised an eyebrow, a playful grin tugging at my lips. "Are you that nervous, babe?" I teased, my eyes locking onto hers.
Her cheeks flushed a soft pink, and she nodded, barely above a whisper. "A little..."
I leaned in closer, my voice lowering to something tender, something just for her. "Well, let's see if I can soothe your nerves." My words were a soft promise as my gaze softened, and I could see her heartbeat in the way her chest rose and fell.
Then, I closed the space between us, my lips meeting hers in a slow, soft kiss that made my pulse race. When I pulled away slightly, her eyes fluttered open, and I couldn't help but smile.
"How's that?"
"The more the better," she murmured, her voice laced with mischief, her eyes sparkling.
I chuckled, shaking my head at her playful request, knowing full well she'd never get enough of me. But I couldn't resist.
I cradled her face, my fingers brushing against her skin as I leaned in, capturing her lips again, this time with a deeper urgency.
My hands trailed along her jawline, then to her neck, feeling the way she shivered beneath my touch. Her breath hitched when my lips found the sensitive spot below her ear, and she let out the softest moan, sending a rush of heat through me.
I pulled back, our breaths mingling, the reality of the moment settling in. "Better now?" I asked, my voice a whisper.
She nodded, her chest rising and falling, her face flushed with a breathless smile. "Yes. So much better."
Returning to her original question, Yoko took a deep breath before asking again, her voice softer this time. "So... can I come over to your house to get some feedback on my poem?"
A warm, genuine smile spread across my face, something real and true. "Of course. You know I'd always want you with me, over anything."
Her eyes softened at my words, a tenderness in her gaze that made my heart flutter. "Then I'll see you later?" she asked, a slight hesitation in her voice as she added, "I need to settle Ham first."
I nodded, my heart skipping a beat. "See you later then."
A rush of excitement surged through me at the thought of having her with me, in the quiet comfort of my home, a space where I could just be with her. The idea warmed me in a way I hadn't expected.ย
