Chapter 4
17:27, 25 February 2015Dispite Newt's protests to leave him behind, the three of them left the small hospital tent, trying to find a quiet place to talk.
As they were walking, Alex fell into step beside Newt. "So... you don't remember anything? At all?"
Newt sighed. He really didn't want to talk to her about this right now. "I remember some vague things like what a skyscraper is or what a city is, but I can't remember specific things. Like people, names of cities, stuff like that."
"Wow," she said.
"Why're you guys not rushing out of this bloody city like everyone else?"
She looked around nervously. When she responded it was barely more than a whisper. "We're immune. We do need to leave, but only to avoid the Cranks.
Newt lowered his voice as well, "why is that a bad thing?"
"Rumor has it that immunes all over the place are going missing. We'd rather not find out where they're being taken," she said gravely.
Newt nodded but said nothing.
They remained silent untill they found a place to talk.
"Okay you first, then us," Dylan said when they had sat down.
Newt sighed and took a moment to gather his thoughts. He had no idea where to start. His arival in the city, the Glade, WICKED. He decided on the last one.
"You guys ever heard of an organization called WICKED?" he asked them.
They both nodded. "Everyone has," Dylan said.
"Did you know that they were trying to find a cure to the Flare?"
More nodding.
"You know how they were doing it?"
Alex shook her head. "It was kept a secret. All we know is that they were looking for one."
"Yeah well. I do," Newt said bitterly.
"How?" Dylan asked suspiciously.
"Because I was one of the ones they were bloody testing on!"
They stared at him with blank expresions.
"They were testing on people! Kids! To study our brains. Trying to see why we were immune. Why we were different. Well most of us. We were put through these tests. Trials. They were horrible." Newt launched into the story of how he woke up in the Glade with a bunch of other boys. How they lived there for two years untill Thomas came and helped them escape. The promise that it was over, then being thrown right back into another test. Surviving the Scorch. Being told he wasn't immune. Escaping WICKED and ending up here.
"Wow," Dylan said. "You're either a really good story teller, or you have the worst life ever."
"You think I'm lying!" Newt yelled. It took all his self-controll not to get up and punch this guy.
"No he doesn't," Alex interjected, glaring at Dylan. "Its just... wow.
"But I'm not one of the immune ones! You should be running as as far away from me as bloody possible! Or better, kill me now before I kill someone." Newt exclaimed.
Alex leaned forward. "Newt, how do you know you're not immune. Have you ever actually been tested."
"All they've been doing is testing on us," he muttered.
"I mean for the Flare!" she said irritaby. "By someone who doesn't work for WICKED."
Newt hesitated. "No," he admitted.
"And you said they lie about alot just so they can map your... brain patterns or something," she said.
"What're you saying?" Newt said suspiciously.
Before she could answer, a scream peirced the air, followed by insane laughter.
Dylan's face turned pale. "I knew we should have left earlier! C'mon Alex, we need to go!" He grabbed her arm and turned to Newt, "you comming or not?"
Newt's first answer would have been no, but what Alex had said made him wonder if she could be right. He got up and as quickly as he could, began to follow them through the crowd.
Chaos was everywhere he turned. He only managed to stay with them because Alex grabbed his hand and pulled him through the crowd. Even then he struggled to stay with them. Everytime he bumped someone with his bad shoulder, it would send stabbs of pain through him. He wanted to stop but Alex had a grip like steel.
When they were almost fifty yards from a Berg, the crowd thicked even more. He could hear wails in front of him. Had the Cranks already reached the Bergs? No they couldn't have. So it was something else.
After alot of yelling, pushing and shoving people out of the way, they reached the front. There were dozens and dozens of people in white protective suits with testing devices blocking the way to the bergs. That's why there was cries coming from up here. They were only letting immunes on.
Alex looked back at Newt. "I suppose this is where we see if I'm right?" she yelled over the chaos. Newt just nodded.
Dylan was the first to reach one of the poeple in white suits. The man held up a devise that Newt had never seen before, but Dylan acted like it was nothing unusual. He held his face close to a plae that would scan his eyes. Then a needle came from within it and pricked him in the neck. He pulled away. The words confirmed immune were flashing on a screen and they let him by.
They repeated the same process on Alex.
Finally, it was Newt's turn. He swallowed and tried to remain calm. He stepped up and looked into the michine. He felt the prick in his neck and pulled away.
There were the words confirmed immune flashing on the screen and they pushed him along.
