Chapter 41: The Disneyland massacre
03:09, 16 August 2021Lina's POV
Six months later.
It's been half a year since Spencer proposed to me, and honestly, I can't wait to marry him. I guess he feels the same way since we practically started planning our wedding immediately after our engagement.
Just then, Garcia comes up to my desk. "Hi, cupcake!"
I smile friendly at her. "Hey, PG. What's up?"
"I was wondering when you're going dress shopping...?" She looks at me with big eyes.
"Uhhh...." The truth is, I didn't even think about it. Since it's a small ceremony with just close friends I wasn't even going to buy a wedding dress.
Garcia rolls her eyes and grabs me by the arm, dragging me to where Prentiss and JJ are chatting. Clearing her throat, she announces, "Listen up, ladies! We're going wedding dress shopping with Lina next weekend!"
JJ claps excitedly. "Yay!!!"
"Count me in!" Prentiss grins.
"Woah, guys." I put a hand up to stop them. "I'm not getting a dress. It's just a small ceremony, no need to spend that much money." I look down at my engagement ring. "Besides, Spencer already spent a fortune on this ring, so I want to keep our budget low for the wedding."
My three friends stare at me with their eyebrows raised and arms crossed.
I sigh. "I'm not getting out of this, am I?"
"Nope." JJ smirks.
"Fineeee," I say, exasperated. Suddenly, someone taps on my shoulder. I turn around and see Spencer sipping on his coffee.
"What are you guys talking about?" He smiles and I immediately get lost in his beautiful eyes.
"Hi, darling." I go on my tippy toes to peck his cheek.
"We're going dress shopping with your fiancée next weekend," replies Prentiss.
"I said I didn't want to," I explain, "but they kinda insisted...."
Spencer looks surprised. "Why not?"
I sigh and look up at him. "You already gave me this expensive ring, I don't want to—"
He takes my chin in between his fingers and tilts my head up. "Nuh-uh. It's your wedding day. I want you to enjoy yourself."
"It's our wedding day."
"Okay. Our wedding day...." Spencer breathes softly, turning us around so his back is facing Garcia, JJ, and Prentiss. Then he bends down to kiss me, a bit rougher than usual. When he pulls back, he gently bites on my lower lip and tugs.
Garcia clears her throat. "We're still here, y'know."
He winks at me before walking away.
I turn back to the girls, feeling light-headed. I have to put my hand on a desk to stabilize myself. "Whooo!"
JJ's raises her eyebrows. "Wow. I never knew Spence had that side of him."
My face gets hot. "He's a really good kisser," I say and we all chuckle.
Just then, we are interrupted by Hotch. "I hate to interrupt, but we got a case. We'll brief on the jet." His eyes flicker down to my mouth before walking away.
I turn to JJ. "Is there something on my mouth?"
She smirks. "Nope. Just red from when you and Spence got all kissy-faced."
My hand flies to my mouth to cover it. "Shoot."
Prentiss sighs and clicks her tongue. "We better get going then, ladies."
About twenty minutes later, we're on the jet, ready to go.
Garcia's face pops up on the laptop screen. "Hello, my fine furry friends. I hate to be the bearer of bad news but I have some bad news."
"What is it, Baby Girl?" asks Morgan.
"There is an ongoing shooting at Disneyland in Anaheim, California." She sighs. "All those children are just going there to have fun with their families and friends...."
Rossi scratches his neck. "Have they identified the shooters yet?"
"No, but SWAT and the local PD have already entered the park," answers Hotch. "Based on the trajectory, the victims were shot from a high viewpoint. Meaning that it's mostly we're dealing with a sniper here."
I furrow my eyebrows, worried. "Have they located where the sniper is?"
"Unfortunately, no. From the chaos and number of victims, it's hard to tell right now." Hotch sighs. "The park is also sealed so no one is getting in or out, other than the authorities."
"Oh no..." Garcia sounds worried. "Three SWAT officers and six police officers have been killed."
"Whoever the UnSub is, he's escalating his kills," states Spencer.
"There's no time to waste. Once we land, we're heading straight to the park," Hotch orders and we all nod.
A while later, we land and speed to Disneyland. Cars swerve around us as we drive, lights flashing and sirens blaring.
"I used to beg my mom to take me here when I was younger," says Morgan, pulling out his gun with a sigh.
Hotch finishes strapping in his bulletproof vest. "Listen guys, once we go in, there's no backing out. It is very dangerous. We have no idea where the shooter is yet, but he is very skilled. So stay alert and watch out for each other."
As we're about to go in, I glance at Spencer who's looking nervous and a sense of longing hits me. What if we don't make it out alive? We're still yet to get married. Not caring if people are watching, I run up to him and throw my arms around his neck, kissing him fiercely.
"Mm...." He gently pushes me back. "That was... very nice. But what was that for?" He cocks his head and grins, putting a hand on my cheek.
My heart flutters. That sweet, sweet face of his just makes it even harder for me to go in. "Just in case we die in there."
"Well if that's the case...." He grabs me by the waist and dips me, planting a soft kiss on my lips. I run my fingers through his hair and pull him closer, never wanting to let go. But then, Hotch clears his throat and Spencer's lips leave mine, leaving me empty without his kiss.
Hotch looks at us with a bittersweet expression. "It's time."
I bury my face in Spencer's chest and inhale his scent one last time. Detergent and coffee. "Let's go," I state with determination.
With our guns drawn we enter the park. Inside is complete madness—people are running around like headless chickens while officers try to maintain order. I look around and see several dead bodies as well, my heart aching when I see children lying lifeless on the ground.
Suddenly, I hear a piercing sound and Morgan grunts in pain, dropping to the ground next to me. Blood oozes out of his stomach and I immediately know that the sniper got him.
"Everyone move out of the way!" I order, putting pressure on Morgan's wound.
Civilians and officers scream, scattering into hiding.
"Yang, run...." he groans weakly.
I shake my head and state, "No, I'm not leaving you."
"Lina!" Spencer yells, running towards me. Just then, another shot is fired, missing Spencer's foot by a mere inch.
My eyes widen in horror. "Get out of here!"
"But—" Spencer begins.
I look down at Morgan. "I got him, just go!" With a reluctant sigh he ducks into a nearby café where the rest of the team is hiding.
"Yang...." Morgan's eyes start to flutter.
"No, stay with me, Derek!" I order. With a grunt, I do a ranger roll and get him on my shoulders. Using all my strength, I push up so now I'm doing a fireman's carry. Oh, my God, he is heavy... 187 pounds of solid muscle. I think to myself.
"Yang, over here!" JJ shouts from the café. I run as fast as I can to her, nearly tripping.
"Okay, put him down here." Hotch bends down to the floor.
"He got shot in the stomach." I set him down. "Put pressure on his wound."
He does as I say. "We need a medic!" he yells into his earpiece.
I quickly check Morgan's pulse—it is weak and rapid which is not a good sign. After that, I open his eyes with my fingers and check his pupils, which are dilated. Dear God, please don't let him die on me. I pray to myself.
And as if my prayers were answered, two EMTs wearing bulletproof vests come in, holding medical supplies.
Prentiss sighs with relief when she sees them. "Thank God."
"He's going into hypovolemic shock. He needs to be given fluids and possibly a blood transfusion," I announce, out of breath.
"Okay, we got it from here," says one of the EMTs.
"Please help him." I step back, letting the two of them work. When they stabilize Morgan, they lift him on the backboard and carry him out.
"He'll need surgery," states the EMT.
I glance down at my hands that are covered in Morgan's blood and start to shake. "Oh, my God...."
"Lina...." Spencer comes and puts a hand on my shoulder.
"What if he dies???" I sob, burying my face in his chest.
He strokes my hair, calming me down. "Shhh, Morgan's strong. He's going to pull through." But even so, I can hear the fear and uncertainty in his voice.
