Chapter 23: Fit test
19:48, 19 August 2021Lina's POV
One year later.
"Come on!" I shout, panting. I look behind me and see Spencer stumbling with every step he takes. I chuckle and take out my earbuds, jogging back to him. "Tired already?"
"Excuse me while I have a heart attack real quick," Spencer replies, gasping for breath.
I lean my weight against Spencer and look around at the running track—there aren't many people here today.
Shaking my head, I giggle. "Alright, alright. We'll take a quick break, but then it's time for push ups."
Spencer's eyes widen in disbelief. "What??? Do you want me to have an actual heart attack?"
"Oh, you won't." I roll my eyes playfully. "Do you want to pass the fit test or not?"
He sighs and smirks at me. "Did you know the FBI academy had to make special exceptions for me?"
"Why?"
"Because I had trouble passing pretty much everything that wasn't book-related."
I laugh. "C'mon, 50 push-ups now!" I drop to the ground.
With my former karate training and frequent weight-lifting sessions at the gym, I'm confident that I will pass the fit test, but as for Spencer...
"I thought we were taking a break!" he whines.
"Do you think you'll get a break when you're chasing down an UnSub? Now get down on the ground!"
"Ugh, fine." He drops to the ground and starts doing push-ups. "But why 50? The minimum number of pushups for men ages 20 to 29 are 29. And for women it's 15."
"When I was in karate, you'd have to do 50 just for being late to class," I say in between push-ups. "44, 45, 46, 47, 48, 49, 50. Done!" I jump up, feeling pumped.
"How—" Spencer squints his eyes at me. "I'm still on my 15th."
I grin. "You better get going then." I head to the bleachers to drink some water. From there, I can hear Spencer's loud, oddly dirty-sounding grunts with each push-up. Rolling my eyes, I run back to him.
"What's up?" He looks up at me from the ground.
"Can you not be so loud?"
He drops down onto his hands and knees. "What do you mean?"
"You sound like you're banging someone." I smirk.
"No I don't." He furrows his eyebrows.
"Yes, you do!" I giggle. "Do some push-ups and listen to yourself."
"Alright." He shrugs and starts doing push-ups again, grunting loudly with each one he does.
"See!" I gently kick him with my foot.
In return, he smirks and lets out a super loud, explicit moan. "Yes, pleaseee... mmm.... Oh, God, yes...."
I gasp and slap my hand over his mouth. "Spencer! People are gonna hear you!"
He giggles. "I'm just messing with you."
I roll my eyes. "Well, keep it down, will ya?"
Spencer leans close to my ear and whispers, "I'll have you be the one making those sounds."
My eyes widen and I blush. "Yeah, right. N-now go back to doing your push-ups."
He grins at me and winks before going back to his previous activities, so I head back to the bleachers.
Around ten minutes later, Spencer comes limping to me, gasping for breath. "I'm done." He sits down on the ground.
"What's wrong with your leg?" I gesture to his limp.
"I don't know, I somehow twisted my ankle doing push-ups." I furrow my eyebrows and open my mouth to question him but he stops me. "I don't know how either."
I can't help but laugh. "Well it's time for sit-ups.... A hundred of them!"
"Nooo," Spencer whines.
But pretty soon, I have him holding my feet down to the ground as he counts my sit-ups. "Ten more, Lina!"
Finally, I finish. "One hundred!" I crack my neck in satisfaction. "Your turn." With a groan, Spencer lies down on the ground with his knees up. I put my hands on his feet, holding them down.
"I'm going to get a hernia," Spencer says through gritted teeth.
"I won't let that happen," I reply when an idea sparks through my mind. "With every sit-up, you get a kiss."
"Huh, really?" Spencer grins.
He quickly resumes his sit-ups, with each one he does I give him a kiss on his forehead. It isn't long before he finishes a hundred.
"Whooo!" His face is all red.
"I guess all you needed was a little motivation." I cup his sweaty face in my hands and give him a gentle kiss on the lips.
"You think I'll pass?"
"I know you will." I sweep his grown out hair off to the side. "You need a haircut soon." I ruffle his hair.
"I know, I know." He grins at me. "Now can we go home, please?"
I roll my eyes at him and smile. "Fine. Your place or mine?"
"Mine." He takes my hand in his.
We walk back to his apartment since we didn't drive to the track. By the time we get there, it is already 6:30 p.m. and the sun is setting.
"I'm going to go shower quickly," I say as we enter through his door.
"Okay, cool," he replies.
I take out some fresh clothes from my gym bag and head to his bathroom. After showering, I change into a T- shirt and a pair of sweatpants, then put my hair in a bun.
When I walk out to the living room, I see Spencer passed out on the couch with a book on his face.
"Spence." I shake him gently.
"Hm?" he mumbles.
"Are you hungry? I can make something for you to eat."
"It's okay. You should take a break."
"I'm not tired." I chuckle. "Besides, I think you need a shower."
"Oh, alright." He gets up with a groan. "Ugh, everything hurts."
"I'll give you a massage after your shower," I whisper in his ear and he blushes.
"O-okay." He quickly heads to the bathroom.
Half an hour later, he comes back out, shirtless, his sweater draped on one shoulder. Though Spencer is pretty thin, he still has good muscle tone.
"You ready?" I pat the seat next to me on the couch.
"Mhm." Spencer grins. Like a little kid, he comes running and jumps on to the sofa.
"If only you'd run that fast for the fit test tomorrow," I joke and he rolls his eyes playfully at me. Then he lies face down on the sofa and I straddle over him, sitting on his lower back.
"Mmmm...." Spencer relaxes his muscles.
I begin working my hands into his back. "Lemme know where it feels good."
"Mmm... right there," Spencer moans.
"Here?" I press harder.
He relaxes. "Mhm."
I smile as I continue to rub his shoulders and after 10 minutes, I work up a sweat. "How's that?" I wipe away some sweat.
"Wonderful." He sits up and gives me a kiss. "Your turn." Putting on his sweater, he turns towards me.
"Spence, you don't have to. I don't even feel sore."
Gently tugging at the hem of my shirt he says, "Just a few minutes."
"I guess it wouldn't hurt."
I take off my T-shirt so that I'm in my sports bra and turn around so my back is facing Spencer. Using my shirt, I cover the scars on the front of my torso, then he puts his soft hands on my back and begins to massage.
"That feels nice." I close my eyes, enjoying the feeling of his large hands on my shoulders.
As he works on my back, Spencer whispers sweet nothings in my ear, making the whole experience even more lovely.
"You're so beautiful, Lina." He kisses my shoulder and I smile blissfully. After a while, my muscles relax.
I crack my neck a bit. "Thanks, Spence. I didn't even know I needed that."
"You're welcome." He kisses me on the cheek. "Do you want me to order takeout?"
I frown. "Takeout again? I can cook something."
"I can help."
"Sure." I walk into the kitchen to open the fridge. I look around and it's pretty much empty except for some cheese, bread, and cucumbers.
Spencer rubs the back of his neck in embarrassment. "Uh, I haven't gone grocery shopping in a while."
"I can make sandwiches," I suggest and he nods.
Fifteen minutes later, we are sitting on the couch, eating our sandwiches while watching "Babar: King of the Elephants".
Spencer takes a bite out of his sandwich. "This was my favourite movie when I was a kid."
"Really?" I ask, my mouth full. "My favourite was 'Bambi'."
After we finish eating, we clean up and I get ready to leave.
"Do you have to go so early?" Spencer puts his hands on my hips, pushing the waistband of my sweatpants down a bit, and rubs his thumbs over my hip bones. "It's only nine."
"We should both get some rest." I give him a kiss on the cheek. "We got the fit test tomorrow."
"Can you stay here for the night, please?" he begs and my heart melts.
I smile and roll my eyes, giving in. "Oh, alright." I gently roll my hips into his and he lets out a soft whine, then I cup his face.
He beams and takes my hand, leading me to his bedroom. He gets into his bed and I crawl in after him, pulling the blanket over us. I sleep on my side curling up into a ball and he spoons me with his body, wrapping his arm around me.
With a sigh of contentment, I relax and close my eyes. Life can't get any better than this. I think to myself.
"Good night, Lina," he whispers softly into my ear, giving me butterflies in my stomach.
"'Night, Spence." I smile and drift off.
The next morning, I wake up still in Spencer's embrace. Reaching for my phone, I check the time which says 6:20 a.m.
I still have a little bit more than an hour before he wakes up, so I quietly slip out of his arms and tiptoe to the bathroom to get ready. And since I normally keep a spare change of clothes at his place, I go into his drawer and pull out an outfit.
After that, I leave his apartment and head back to mine. We live relatively close, so it doesn't take me too long to get there.
A few minutes later, I unlock the door to my place. Once I'm in, I start making a healthy breakfast for Spencer since I want to make sure he has the energy later for the fit test. Then I also quickly make one for myself.
Once I'm done, I change into some work out clothes and feed Pumpkin.
"Meow!" Pumpkin yowls at me.
"Sorry for not coming home last night, Pumpkin," I apologize, kissing his fuzzy forehead.
He purrs and rubs his cheek against my face. "Mrrrreow."
I giggle in delight. "Bye, Pumpkin." I head out the door and take the elevator to go down. Then I get in my car and start driving back to Spencer's place.
When I arrive, I use the key that Spencer gave me and unlock the door. Trying to be quiet, I step in soundlessly so as to not wake him up in case he's still sleeping.
"Lina?" his voice calls from the bedroom. "Is that scrambled eggs I smell?"
I chuckle to myself. Guess he's awake now. "I brought you breakfast!" I shout back, walking to Spencer's bedroom where he's changing.
"Thank you." He smiles gratefully. "But you didn't have to do that."
"Knowing you, you would've grabbed a coffee and called it breakfast." I smirk. "Anyways, don't forget to change into your workout clothes."
Soon enough, we are out the door and driving to the running track for our fit test.
Spencer looks around at the empty track. "We're early."
"Hotch said the PT instructor will be here at nine."
"Well, I guess we can eat first." He undos his seatbelt.
I pull out the scrambled egg sandwiches I made and hand one to Spencer. "Hope you like it."
"I like anything that you make." He kisses me and I blush.
After we finish eating, I see Morgan's car pull up next to us in the parking lot, so I roll down the window to greet him as he walks towards us.
"Hi, Derek." I grin.
"Morning, Lina," he responds, "is Pretty Boy there with you?"
"Mhm."
"Hey, Derek!" Spencer waves.
"You spent the night at Spencer's?" Morgan asks me, crossing his arms across his chest.
"Yeah," I answer, "how'd you know?"
"'Cause Reid's got that look on his face." He smirks.
Spencer furrows his brows "What look?"
"Well, you always look like you've slept well whenever she's there with you." He stretches his arm. "Anyways, you guys ready for the test?"
"I am," I answer cheerfully. I look over at Spencer with my eyebrows raised.
Sounding unsure, Spencer says, "I hope I am. I'm still a bit sore from yesterday."
"Hmmm... I wonder what you two were doing?" Morgan smirks, raising his eyebrows suggestively and I turn bright red.
"We were training for the fit test!" Spencer yells, looking embarrassed.
"Alright, I'm just messing with you two." He chuckles and shakes his head.
Around forty minutes later, the rest of the team arrives, ready to take the fit test. Our PT instructor, Matt, is a dark haired man who looks like he practically lives at the gym.
I walk up to Prentiss, JJ, and even Garcia, who are stretching by the bleachers. "Hey, guys," I greet. "Garcia, I didn't know you needed to take the fit test."
"Oh, I don't," she states, "just wanted to join you guys."
"Nice." I grin at her. "Are you guys ready?"
JJ jogs on the spot. "Been training all week."
"Ugh, I don't know." Emily looks down at her knee that is still healing and I sigh.
"I'm so sorry," I say, remembering how Raphael made us fight each other and I ended up breaking Emily's knee.
"Yang, it's not your fault." Her eyes shine with kindness. "Besides, the head of the board made a few exceptions for me."
"Once you're 100% healed, we can go running together." I give her a hug and she returns it.
"Alright, ladies," Matt shouts, "enough chit-chatting about the latest sales on designer bags and shoes!"
My jaw drops open in disbelief and I look at the girls. "What a..."
"Jerk." JJ finishes my sentence.
"C'mon girls, let's show that jock how it's done," Garcia says defiantly and we all nod.
I run over next to Spencer and give him a quick kiss, earning a stern look from Hotch so I move away, feeling embarrassed.
"Alright, sit-ups first!" Matt announces. "Everyone get a partner and hold their feet down. And no cheating!"
I glance over at Spencer and he winks at me, meaning he wants to be partners.
"Good luck," he says.
"You, too." I stick my hand out and we shake hands. We get down on the ground, ready to start.
"On your mark, get set... go!" Mark yells.
Everyone starts doing as many sit-ups as they can. After that, we go through the 300-meter sprint, then push-ups—which I all ace at—and finally, comes the 1.5 mile run. I glance at Spencer, who's sweating like crazy.
"Hey, Lina." He puts his hands on his knees, breathing hard. "See you at the finish line." He winks at me and I grin.
"That's if you don't pass out half way," I joke.
After that, Mark blows his whistle and we take off with me in the lead and JJ close behind me. But eventually, I lose her and Morgan is right next to me.
"Hey, Yang," he pants, sounding cocky.
"Hey," I reply with the same attitude. I pick up my pace and so does he.
Near the end, I start sprinting. Even though Morgan's strong, I am more nimble and quick. Soon, I outrun him and I put in my last extra burst of speed.
Right when I'm about to cross the finish line someone flashes past me and beats me to it. Thinking it is Morgan, I prepare to listen to his taunts.
But to my surprise, I feel someone pull me in by the arms and kiss me on the forehead. Looking up, I see Spencer's smiling face.
"I told you I would see you at the finish line," Spencer pants.
"Spencer?!?" I exclaim in disbelief while gasping for breath. "How—" I look behind me and see the rest of the team coming up.
"Like a lightning bolt." Morgan puts his hand on his hips. "Came outta nowhere."
"Oh, Spence..." I hug him close. "I'm so proud of you!"
"Thanks to your training," Spencer teases.
Rossi wipes away sweat from his forehead. "You better watch your back, Derek. He can outrun you now."
We all laugh as Morgan rolls his eyes and ruffles up Spencer's hair.
