Chapter 21: Raphael
19:47, 19 August 2021Lina's POV
I sit in the passenger's seat as Prentiss drives, daydreaming about Spencer. I don't even realize that she's talking to me until she's practically yelling in the small confined space of the car.
"Yang!" Prentiss shouts and I jolt.
"Y-yes, Prentiss?" I stutter and clear my throat.
She raises an eyebrow. "I said, how are you liking the job? You've been here for almost eight and a half months now."
"It's only been eight and a half months?" I do some quick math and realize that she's right. It's also been only 2 days since Spencer and I started dating. "How the hell has it only been eight and a half months??" I chuckle in disbelief.
"I guess the lack of sleep messes you up," Prentiss replies and we both laugh. "Sooo... you and Spence have only been together for what, 2 days?"
I nod and smile. "It's been the best 2 days of my life so far."
She grins and raises an eyebrow at me. "You guys act like you've been in a relationship for months."
I feel myself blush. "Well, I've liked him since the day I joined the BAU."
Prentiss is right—even though Spencer and I have only officially dated for 2 days, our feelings for each other from before makes it seem like it's been months.
Soon, we reach the family of the second victim and we knock on their door. An elderly lady opens it, her red eyes look like she's been crying.
"Hi, Mrs. Davis. I'm Agent Emily Prentiss and this is Agent Lina Yang," Prentiss greets. "We're here to ask you some questions about your son, Mark Davis.
"Yes, yes, of course," Mrs. Davis replies, gesturing for us to come in.
An hour later, we leave her house with not much new information. Pretty much everything she told us we already knew from the police.
"Nothing that we don't already know about," I say to Prentiss with a sigh.
She shrugs. "You want to grab some coffee before heading over to the next family?"
I nod. "Coffee sounds good." We find a nearby coffee shop and drive in.
After getting our drinks, we head back to the car when I hear a gun click behind my head. I drop my drink and it splashes all over the pavement. I glance over at Prentiss, and she drops her coffee as well, her eyes widening with horror. I watch as she reaches for her gun but quickly stops when the gun presses closer to my head.
"Don't do anything stupid, or I'll shoot," a man's voice says behind me.
Prentiss nods and raises her hands. "O-okay, okay."
"Take your gun out and hand it to me."
"I'm reaching for my gun now." Prentiss slowly takes her gun out and walks towards the man. I feel my gun get taken out of its holster as well.
I scan the parking lot, hoping that there is someone who can help us. But unfortunately, it is dead empty so we're screwed.
"Follow me." The man wraps an arm around me tightly. Using my body as a shield, he guides Prentiss and I into a nearby black van. He opens the door and Prentiss gets in, then me.
Without warning, he knocks Prentiss unconscious in the head with the back of his gun.
"Emily!" I struggle against the man's grip when suddenly, I feel a blunt force to the back of my head and I black out.
I faintly remember what happened afterwards, only to wake up and find myself on a bed. I roll over, expecting to be in my bedroom with Spencer sleeping next to me, but I'm not.
"Lina...." someone groans next to me. I turn my head and see Prentiss on a bed as well.
"Emily?" I wince in pain as I try to sit up. My head hurts like hell and my ribs are still a little bit bruised from my fight with Rosalina.
"Good, you two are awake," a man's voice says over the intercom. It belongs to the guy that took us.
"What the hell do you want from us?!?" I shriek furiously. I scan the room for a way to escape—there's a door but it's bolt shut from the outside.
My heart drops when I realize the room is filled with medical supplies. Prentiss must've realized as well, because her eyes are filled with fear.
"He's our UnSub," Prentiss whispers.
"What's your name?" I demand.
"My name?" the UnSub scoffs, "my name is Raphael."
Prentiss stands up. "Raphael, let us go."
"I want you two to fight."
"No!" I scream back.
"I think we all know what will happen if you don't," he taunts.
Suddenly a shot is fired next to my feet, making me jump up from the bed. I look around to see where it came from and realize that there are tiny holes in each corner of the wall.
"Shit," I mutter under my breath.
Prentiss walks towards me with her fists up. "Lina, we don't have a choice."
"Emily...." I look at her reluctantly, not wanting to do this.
"If we don't, he'll kill both of us." She clenches her fist.
"O-okay." I kick off my shoes and unwrap my scarf. Then lowering my stance, I get ready to fight.
With a nod, Prentiss charges at me and knocks me over. I grunt heavily as I hit the floor with her on top of me.
"I'm so sorry!" she cries as she punches me in the face. I thrust upwards and roll over so I'm on top of her now and land a few blows to her face. She kicks me off and I fly backwards, hitting my head on the floor.
"The team will catch this guy." I gasp for breath. As Prentiss hovers over me, I kick her in the knee and hear a snap. She shrieks in pain, falling to the floor and tears roll down my cheek.
"Lina...." she groans.
I look around the room furiously. "There! Are you satisfied, you sick son of a bitch?!?"
"Finish her off!" Raphael hisses.
I look down at Prentiss, clutching her knee in agony. "No." Tears fill my eyes. "I can't do that, she's my friend."
Without warning, a gun is shot next to Prentiss's head and it hits the floor underneath beneath her, missing her by a few inches.
"You have 10 seconds," Raphael states menacingly. "Ten, nine, eight, seven—"
"Okay! Okay!" I start stomping, kicking and punching Prentiss. Tears stream down my face with each blow I land on her. I try to knock her unconscious first so she doesn't have to suffer. Her face and body is completely bloody by now. I stop and fall on my knees, sobbing.
"Good," Raphael says over the intercom. "Now you have to save her. All the supplies you'll need are in this room." And with that, the room is silent again.
I feel like breaking down and crying but I can't, I have to try and help my friend.
"Prentiss! Prentiss! Emily, wake up!" I shake her shoulders, trying to get her to wake up. But all I get back is a weak groan from her.
I rack my brain, trying to remember the steps of trauma evaluation that I learned in medical school. CABCDE. I think in my head. "Catastrophic Hemorrhaging. Airway. Breathing. Circulation. Disability. Exposure," I mutter to myself.
Fifty minutes later, I have Prentiss sleeping on her bed with a chest tube coming out of her. I shudder as I remember her scream in pain as I used the scalpel to make an incision and shoved the tube into her.
I sigh and lie down in my bed, closing my eyes in exhaustion when suddenly, I hear the chains outside the door rattle.
"Get up!" Raphael yells and unlocks the door. He's wearing a ski mask so I can't tell what he looks like.
I quickly jump up from the bed, getting ready to fight, but he points his gun at me to stand down and I obey. Then he comes up to me and knocks me in the head with the butt of his gun, making me fall unconscious for the second time today.
When I wake up, I find myself in an unfamiliar room. I scream and jerk around wildly, thinking that I'm still trapped until I feel a gentle hand on my shoulder.
"Hey, hey, hey. It's okay." A familiar voice soothes me, and I turn my head to see Spencer looking at me with a worried expression.
"Spence!" I exclaim with tears in my eyes. Once I calm down, I realize that I'm in the hospital. "What am I doing here? I'm not injured."
"You were unconscious so the doctor wanted to keep you here for observation. You have a concussion."
"Oh." I rub my head. "How long have I been out?"
"A day." He tucks a strand of hair behind my ears.
"A day???" I sigh. "Where's Emily?"
"She's sleeping. She had surgery."
I feel ashamed for what I did to her. "Oh, God, I did this to her."
"You didn't have a choice." Spencer strokes my cheek gently.
"No, it should've been me," I sob.
"You've had medical experience. If you were the one that was beaten up, Prentiss wouldn't have been able to save you, and both of you would've been killed."
I sniffle. "Yeah, I guess that's true."
"The doctors said that you did an amazing job on the chest tube and splint." Spencer smiles. "You told me that you were only in medical school for 2 years?"
I nod, feeling a bit better about myself. "But I like reading books about medicine and doing research online on medical techniques." I close my eyes to get some rest when I hear Spencer whimper.
"Sorry," Spencer whispers, tears streaming down his face.
"Spence! What's wrong?" I sit up from my bed. I reach over and gently hold his head. He leans on my chest, shaking and crying.
"We tracked the car that you guys were in and found that it was empty at the coffee shop," explains Spencer. "There was spilled coffee on the ground so I knew something must've happened. Then we get a call from a guy saying that he found two women's bodies lying in a dumpster."
"Oh, Spence...." I try to comfort him.
"I thought I was going to find you dead!" He sobs uncontrollably. "I know we've only dated for 3 days, 6 hours and 54 minutes, but it feels like I've known you for much longer than that. Just talking with you everyday since you've joined the BAU makes me so happy."
I can't help but chuckle softly at his precise math. "I feel the same way as well." I smile at him. "You make me so happy."
Glancing down at Spencer who's lying against my chest, I wipe away his tears. I've never had a guy cry for me before, and it's what I love about Spencer. He's sensitive, caring, respectful, loving... and I can't believe he's mine.
Suddenly, I hear a knock on the door and Hotch comes in. He looks awkwardly at Spencer and I's embrace so we quickly pull away. Spencer clears his throat and nods respectfully at Hotch.
"Sorry to interrupt, I just wanted to see if Yang was awake yet," says Hotch. "How are you feeling?"
"Great," I reply. "Did you catch Raphael yet?"
Hotch furrows his brows and cocks his head. "Who's Raphael?"
"He's the guy who took Prentiss and I." I look at Hotch who's looking at Spencer.
"Reid, wasn't Raphael Dunkins a suspect?"
I cock my head in confusion. Wow, I must've been out for a while... I didn't even know we had a suspect.
"Yeah." Spencer blinks a few times. "He was a surgeon that was fired for malpractice."
Hotch nods his head. "Okay, the team and I will go find him. Reid, stay here with Yang."
"I'm okay, he can go," I say, not wanting to prevent Spencer from doing his job.
"We'll be fine," Hotch responds. "Plus his leg still isn't completely healed yet."
"Oh, right." I remember that Spencer's leg was injured. "Stay safe, Hotch."
"I will." Hotch heads out the door.
A few hours later, the team catches Raphael and I get discharged. Since Spencer and I are going to visit his mom, the rest of the team goes home first. Except for Prentiss who still needs to be at the hospital for a while, and Morgan, who wants to stay with her.
"You ready to meet my mom?" Spencer asks nervously as he starts the car.
"Of course," I reply, smiling. "How do I look?" I'm wearing a white sweater with blue jeans, and the purple scarf that I picked yesterday.
Spencer gently kisses my forehead. "Beautiful."
