Hello! Back by popular demand; me! Well, actually it's Cody but I mean I write Cody so... But anyway, so many of you have left lovely comments so I thought I would come back to this fic. I have some free time on my hands so we'll see where it goes. Hope you enjoy. And thank you for sticking with this fic! Now, on to Cody and the pack's supernatural adventures!
Cody's eyes opened slowly and she took in the dingy environment of her surroundings. She sat up carefully, her head pounding as she moved off the train car seat. The lights flickered for a moment and she wasn't sure if she was doing it or if it was just because the building was so run down. She shook her head. Somehow, Derek had managed to downgrade from his half burnt house.
Cody heard footsteps in the train car and stood up to go find the others. "This place sucks," she grumbled, working a kink out of her neck.
"So, why do we need their help?" Isaac was asking.
"Because it's harder to kill than I thought," said Derek. "And I still don't know who it is."
"And they do?" asked Isaac.
Derek let out an irritated sigh. "They might."
Cody stepped out of the car and into the big room beyond, making her presence known to the boys.
"Hey," Isaac greeted with a smile. Cody smiled back. "How are you doing?"
Cody stretched her arms out in front of her to try and relieve some of the stiffness. "This place sucks," she said. "I can't believe you guys actually live here."
Derek scoffed. "You're welcome for letting you stay."
Cody rolled her eyes but did thank him.
Isaac turned to her. "You're friends with Scott and Stiles and Allison. Do you know who it is?"
Cody's stomach twisted and she took a deep breath to try and control her heart rate. "No," she said firmly. "I don't know who it is." She felt bad about lying to them, but she knew if Derek found out who the kanima was he would kill them without a doubt.
Derek turned back to Isaac. "That's why I need you to get on their good side."
"Hmm," came a voice from the other end of the room. "Scott or Stiles?"Erica walked towards them, her lips turned up into a satisfied smirk.
"Either," said Derek, his teeth clenched in irritation. Cody was sure that if he kept doing that he would break his teeth one day.
"Why can't she find out?" asked Isaac, pointing at Cody. "She's already friends with them."
"Because I'm asking you," he snapped back.
Erica chuckled softly. "This should be fun."
"You know, the full moon is coming, Derek," said Isaac, his voice strained with stress.
"I'm aware of that," he said as he rummaged in a large trunk. He pulled out several chains with cuffs and a spiked circle on them.
"I don't even want to know," grumbled Cody.
"You said you were going to teach us to turn whenever we wanted," said Isaac.
Derek set the chains on the ground. "There hasn't been time."
Isaac's voice was getting shaky as he looked at the chains. "But if you have to lock us up that means you're alone against the Argents."
"They haven't found us," said Derek.
"Yeah," snapped Isaac. "Yet."
"And how do we know if we can trust her," snapped Erica, pointing a finger at Cody.
Cody rolled her eyes. "Why would I tell them anything?" she snapped, her voice defensive. "Gerard wants to kill me too."
"There's just too much to worry about already," said Isaac. "So, why don't we forget the kanima?"
"We can't!" yelled Derek as he made his way to the other side of the room. "There was something about the way Gerard looked at it," he said, his voice intense. "Like he wasn't afraid. At all. I don't know what he knows or what he's planning. But I'm sure about one thing, we have to find it first."
"Wait, wait," said Cody, holding her hand up, signaling for him to slow down. "What are saying, that you think Gerard knows who it is? If he did know whoever it is would be dead already." The three of them looked at her and she went on. "Look, I'm not defending him, you know that. But if he had even the slightest idea of who it is he wouldn't hesitate."
"Like I said," said Derek, turning to leave. "We have to find it first."
***
Cody's mind was turning quickly as she paced up and down the aisles of the library. Gerard couldn't know anything. Could he?
"Cody." She looked up as Stiles called her name and made her way over to him and Scott. Allison was on the other side of the shelf, holding a tablet. She passed it through to Scott.
"That's everything Lydia could translate," she said. "And trust me she was very confused."
Scott looked up from the tablet and through the shelf at Allison. "Yeah, what did you tell her?"
Allison shook her head, an exasperated grin on her face. "That we're part of an online gaming community that battles mythical monsters."
Stiles's face fell. "We are part of an online gaming community that battles mythical monsters," he said, gesturing to himself and Cody.
Cody gave him a shove and hissed, "You didn't need to tell them that."
Scott went back to looking at the tablet. "Does it say how to find out who is controlling it?" asked Scott.
Allison shook her head. "Not really," she said. "But Stiles is right about the murderers."
"Yes!" exclaimed Stiles excitedly.
Allison went on. "It calls the kanima a 'weapon of vengeance.' There's a story in there about a priest in South America who used the kanima to kill murderers in his village."
"Well, that's kind of a good thing, isn't it?" asked Stiles.
"Until the bond grew strong enough that he could get the kanima to kill whoever he wanted."
"That's pretty bad," said Cody.
"All bad all very very bad," Stiles agreed.
"And the other thing is that the kanima is supposed to be a werewolf," said Allison. "But it can't be."
"Not until it resolves that in its past which manifested it," Scott finished, reading from the tablet.
Stiles shook his head. "Yeah, Jackson could use a few thousand hours of therapy."
"I could have told you that," said Cody. They were quiet for a moment until Cody asked, "What if it has something to do with his parents? His real parents?"
"Does anyone know what happened to them?" asked Scott.
"Lydia might," said Stiles excitedly, the prospect of talking to Lydia now the only thing on his mind.
"What if she doesn't know anything?" asked Cody.
Allison shrugged and put the book she had been pretending to read back on the shelf. "Well," she said. "He doesn't have a restraining order against me, so I'll talk to him myself."
Scott reached through the shelf and grabbed Allison's hand. "If he does anything you run the other way, okay?"
"I can handle myself," said Allison.
"If he hurts you then someone is going to need to take care of me," said Scott. "If he does anything-"
"Like?" Allison asked.
Stiles pushed his head through the opening in the shelf. "Anything evil," he said.
Allison pushed his face back onto the other side at the same time Cody pulled him back.
"Guys," said Cody softly. "Derek and his pack are still looking for it. They don't know it's Jackson yet, but if they find him Derek will kill him."
Stiles narrowed his eyes at Cody. "How do you know this?" he asked.
"It's a long story," she said.
"Well," Stiles crossed his arms and glared. "I'm not moving until you tell us how you know this."
Cody let out a sigh. "Ugh, we don't have time for this. "You two," she pointed to Scott and Allison. "Go." Cody grabbed Stiles by the sleeve of his shirt and started pulling him down the aisle. "You, come on."
***
Cody stood by her locker as she waited for Stiles. Her fingers nervously drummed on the metal. "Hey." A voice behind her made her jump and she turned around quickly. Isaac was leaning against the wall casually, smiling at her.
"Hi," she greeted, her voice a little higher than usual because of the stress. "What's up?"
Carefully Isaac extended his hand placed it softly on her shoulder, then started playing with the ends of her hair.
"I just wanted to make sure you're okay," he said. "You didn't really tell me what happened last night so..."
It wasn't a question but Cody knew he was asking. She looked down at her shoes and Isaac took a small step forward. They were closer than what would be considered friendly, their chests almost touching.
"I just lost control," she said quietly. "I got freaked."
"Why?" he asked. Isaac had those big eyes that looked at her intensely, those puppy eyes that drew her in.
Cody shrugged, looking down and away from those eyes. "It just happens sometimes. I'm getting better at controlling it."
Isaac smiled a little, his dimples popping out as he did. He was about to say something when a throat being cleared made them look away from each other. Stiles stood in front of the two, his arms crossed over his chest. He raised his eyebrows at Cody when she looked at him. Cody took a step back from Isaac as she felt the heat rush to her face.
"I gotta go," she said softly. "I'll see you later, Isaac."
Isaac gave a small wave as he watched Cody walk down the hall.
Cody hurried down the hallway towards the doors at the end, Stiles quickly following her.
"Oh, no you don't," he said, catching up with Cody. "You're not getting out of this that easy."
Cody pushed the heavy metal doors open and kept walking. "I don't want to talk about it," she said, a warning edge in her voice.
"You and Lahey are still a...thing?" Stiles asked, completely ignoring her protest. "You do realize that his pack is trying to kill Jackson and, occasionally, us, right?"
Cody narrowed her eyes and pursed her lips at him, wanting nothing more than to avoid this conversion. "I don't want to talk about it, Stiles."
"Why?" he asked. "Because deep down you know it's wrong and that you're basically betraying our pack?"
Cody turned on him. "First of all, we are not a 'pack,' the only werewolf in our group is Scott. Second, how am I betraying us? We're just, I don't know, flirting, I guess." She didn't like that word, but she couldn't think of a better way to describe their "relationship."
"Yeah," scoffed Stiles. "And kissing."
"We only kissed once," mumbled Cody, her cheeks reddening at the memory.
"But you've wanted to kiss more," said Stiles firmly, stating it as a fact.
"Stiles," said Cody, her voice tired. "Shut up."
"You know Derek is going to lose it when he finds out about this."
"No, he's not," she said. "And besides, why would he ever find out?"
Stiles narrowed his eyes at her and if she hadn't been so annoyed it would have been funny. "Because that's just the kind of luck you have."
"Seriously, shut up."
"Oh, no way," said Stiles. "There is no way I'm ever letting this go."
***
"I'm not supposed to tell anyone," said Lydia, her heels clicking on the linoleum floor as she walked. Cody and Stiles followed after her quickly.
"Come on," Stiles pressed. "Anyone who says 'I'm not supposed to tell anyone is dying to tell someone so tell us."
Lydia looked at Cody then Stiles out of the corner of her eyes. "Why do you want to know?"
"We can't tell you that," Cody jumped in before Stiles could say anything stupid.
Lydia rolled her eyes. "Then I'm not telling you."
" But you are telling me that you could tell me something if you wanted to?" asked Stiles.
"Was that a question?" asked Lydia.
"Made sense to me," said Cody, but then again, she spent more time with Stiles than the average person.
"Well, tell me if this feels like an answer," said Lydia, pushing her red hair behind her so the curls bounced. "No."
Stiles let out an irritated grunt and followed after her, Cody quick on his heels. Unfortunately, neither of them noticed Erica watching them from the corner.
"Lydia!" Stiles called after her.
"Lydia, come on!" called Cody, but she was already gone.
She turned to look at Stiles as they stopped briefly in the hall when something came out of nowhere and slammed Stiles against the wall.
"What the hell, Erica?" Cody snapped once she realized who it was. Erica had Stiles forcefully pressed to the wall, her deadly claws out.
Erica ignored her. "Why are you asking Lydia about Jackson's real parents?"
"Why do you need the claws?" snapped Cody.
"Especially on camera." Stiles pointed to the security camera behind them and Erica let go. "That's right," Stiles taunted. "Want to play Catwoman? I'll be your Batman."
He turned to walk off, gesturing for Cody to follow, but Erica's voice made them stop.
"If you're looking for Jackson's parents they're about a mile from here. In Beacon Hills cemetery." She gave them one last look and walked off.
Cody and Stiles looked at each other, confused, then ran after her.
"Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. Do you know they died?" Cody called after her as she ran.
Erica gave her that triumphant smirk that she hated so much. "Maybe. If you tell me why you two are oh so interested."
Cody shot her hand out to hit Stiles in the arm, warning him not to say anything. Erica stopped abruptly and Cody had to skid to a halt to stop herself from running into her.
"It's him, isn't it?" asked Erica, more to herself than anyone else.
"What?" said Stiles, still trying to cover. "Him? Him who? What's him?"
Erica was nodding now, sure of her decision. "The test might not have worked but it's still him. Jackson is the kanima." She continued down the hall and Cody and Stiles continued to follow her.
"Erica, you cannot tell Derek," said Cody. Her voice had a sharp edge so she knew she was serious.
"There's so much more to this story that you guys don't know," Stiles pointed out.
Cody narrowed her eyes at Erica. "And just because you got your magical makeover from the bite doesn't mean you can go around destroying people's lives."
Erica turned on them, her perfect blonde hair whipping around quickly. "Why not?" she snarled. Her face was scrunched into one of anger, but Cody could see the hurt underneath. Erica continued, though Cody could tell that she was only talking to Stiles now. "That's all anyone used to do to me. I used to have the biggest crush on you. Yeah, you Stiles. And you never even noticed me. Not once."
Cody rolled her eyes. "Oh, let it go!" she snapped. "We don't have time for your pathetic teenage crap. It's high school, get over it. I am because there are monsters out their trying to eat me. Get a little perspective you big werewolf baby." Cody knew she had taken it a little too far, but it just felt so good to get off her chest. It was freeing.
Erica turned towards Cody now, the hurt gone from her face as she displayed only anger. "I need to get some perspective?" she asked, her voice hard. "All you care about is running after Derek, and now Isaac. I swear, the day you stop becoming useful with those magic tricks I'm going to rip your throat out."
It was Cody who threw Erica against the wall this time, but she didn't even need to touch her. Erica's head hit the wall hard and she stayed there, levitated and pressed firmly against the wall.
"You could try," snarled Cody. "But I don't think you'd be very successful."
She dropped her hand and Erica fell with it, landing in a heap on the floor. There was a small moment of peace, and then the door to the locker room came flying open and Scott and Jackson came tumbling out, caught in a heavy fist fight. Cody and Stiles restrained Scott while Erica got a grip on Jackson. It was perfect timing because just then Mr. Harris made his way down the hall.
"Boys, what is going on?" He stopped in front of the group and looked at each one of them. "McCall? Stilinski?" Everyone was quiet, unsure how to explain the fight that had literally just burst out of the locker room door a minute ago. "Alright, you two-" Mr. Harris paused. "No, all of you, detention at three o'clock."
***
The seven of them filed into the library, all looking more annoyed than ever. The separated and sat down at tables.
"I can't be in detention here," said Jackson as her pulled his seat out. "I have a restraining order against these tools."
"All these tools?" asked Mr. Harris.
Stiles shook his head and gestured to himself and Scott. "No, just us tools."
"Fine," said Mr. Harris. He pointed to another table farther away from Jackson. "You two, there."
Cody waited a moment for Mr. Harris to leave, then moved over to heir table as well.
"I'm gonna kill him," said Scott under his breath.
"No you're not," said Stiles. "You're going to find out who's controlling him and then you're going to help him."
Scott shook his head. "No, you were right. Let's kill him."
They all glanced over to Jackson's table, Cody sighing in the process. But it wasn't Jackson that caught their eye, it was Matt, who was carefully studying the iPad with all of the information about the kanima on it.
"Oh, crap," mumbled Cody.
The three watched him for a minute, their eyes narrowed suspiciously as her read over the pages on the iPad. Stiles curled his lip the way he did when he was irritated about something.
"Hey," he said, grabbing Cody and Scott's attention. "What if it's Matt. I mean this whole thing comes back to the video, right?"
"Wasn't Matt the one who found the missing two hours of footage?" asked Cody, her eyebrows furrowed in confusion.
"Well, yeah," said Stiles, considering this information. "He's trying to throw suspicion off of himself," he said confidently.
They all looked back at Matt who was casually munching on some chips as if he didn't have a care in the world besides boredom.
"So he had Jackson kill Isaac's dad, one of the Argent hunters, and the mechanic working on your jeep?"
"Yes!" Stiles said, his voice rising softly.
"Why?" asked Cody and Scott in unison.
"Becasue..." Stiles paused again, obviously searching for a reason. "He's evil."
"You just don't like him," said Scott.
Stilles shook his head. "The guy just bugs me. I don't know why. Just look at his face."
Scott gave Stiles a look that showed his disbelief. "Any other theories?"
Stiles opened his mouth to respond but Jackson caught everyone's attention. He was pushing on his temples as if he had a headache. His forehead was sweaty and Cody could feel the anxiety rise in the air. They watched Jackson grab his bag and scurry out of the library, claiming he had to get some water.
"How do you know how Jackson's parents died?" asked Cody as she, Stiles, and Scott sat down at Erica's table.
Erica shrugged her shoulders nonchalantly.
"If you don't talk I'll make you," said Cody, her voice slow and intense.
Erica narrowed her eyes at the three of them. "My dad was the insurance agent on the case," she said. Her eyes darted from Jackson back to the other three. "I can pull up the case file on it. Hang on." She reached into her bag and pulled out her laptop. She opened it and began typing quickly.
There was a moment of silence before the loud speaker went off and a voice that was definitely Cody's mom said, "Scott McCall, please report to the front office."
***
Erica scrolled through the file as Cody and Stiles looked over it.
"Wait, look at the date," said Stiles, pointing to a detail on the screen.
"'The passengers arrived at the hospital DOA on June 14,'" Erica read from the report.
"Jackson's birthday is June 15," said Stiles. Cody's stomach dropped.
Mr. Harris stood from his seat, his bag in hand. Everyone else in the room began to gather their things and stand up. Mr. Harris started to chuckle.
"Oh, I'm leaving," he said, a smug smile plastered on his lips. Cody resisted the urge to slap it off. "You are not," he continued. "You can leave when you're done with the reshelving." He gestured to several carts full of books and his smile grew. "You enjoy your evening."
Cody, Stiles, Allison, and Scott weren't helping with the reshelving. They were standing in a corner talking quietly about the information they had acquired in just a few short hours.
"This means Jackson was born after his mom died, by c-section," explained Stiles. "They had to pull him out of her dead body."
"Well, damn," said Cody. "No wonder the guy is messed up."
"But was it really an accident?" asked Allison.
Stiles shook his head. "The report said it was inconclusive."
"So his parents could have been killed?" asked Scott. "Why would someone want to do that?"
Stiles shrugged. "But it lines up with the kanima legend. It seeks out murderers."
"But what do Jackson's parents have to do with who is controlling him?" asked Cody.
Scott started moving away from their secluded row. "We have to talk to him." The other three tried to stop him but he had rounded the corner already. He stopped when he saw a book lying in the middle of the row, like someone had dropped it. He turned to find Matt, face down on the floor.
The others were just beginning to move towards him when there was a crash from above. Jackson leapt from the top of the bookcases and crashed into the lights, sending destruction everywhere. He was heading towards Erica, who bared her fangs, but she wasn't quick enough. With a quick strike he hit her with venom and she fell helplessly to the floor. Scott moved forward to try and help. He stood in front of Jackson for a moment before he struck out, knocking Scott to the ground. The four of them looked out from behind a bookshelf to see what he was doing.
Cody began to move forward slowly and Scott reached out his hand to try and stop her. She threw his grip off and continued moving.
"Cody, don't!" whispered Allison urgently.
Cody shook her head. "I think I can get through to him."
She reached her hand out and started moving towards Jackson, making her presence known.
"Jackson," she said tentatively.
He turned towards her. He wasn't in his full kanima form. His eyes were slit like snakes and half his face was covered in scales. He had thick, jagged fingernails that dripped a clear liquid.
"Jackson, it's me, Cody," she said softly, trying to force her way into his head, trying to make him know what was happening. He tilted his for a moment as if confused, then with a harsh swing of his arm he through her across the room.
Cody crashed into one of the bookshelves hard. She groaned and looked up to see where Jackson had gone. He was still in the same place, staring blankly ahead. Cody watched as he picked up a piece of chalk and began writing on the board in scraggly handwriting. When he was done he looked back at the others for a moment, his eyes blank, then leapt out the window with a crash.
The board said, "Stay out of my way or I'll kill you all."
They looked at the board for a minute until they heard Stiles yelling at them.
"Hey, guys. Hey! Hey!" hey yelled, crouching over Erica's body. She was shaking violently, her limbs moving uncontrollably. "I think she's having a seizure!"
Cody ran over to Stiles while Scott moved next to Allison and Matt. Cody placed her hands on Erica's shoulders and tried to stop the shaking, but no natural magic could help. Erica wasn't necessarily in pain at the moment, her body was out of her control and Cody had never tried to stop something like that.
"We have to get her to a hospital," she said frantically.
"No," Erica stuttered out, her voice barely above a whisper. "To Derek. Only to Derek."
Cody could hear Scott and Allison arguing in the next row over, but she tried to block them out as she focused on Erica, trying to calm her. It was only a minute before Scott came back to scoop up Erica's shaking body. Stiles and Cody followed Scott quickly, leaving the destroyed library behind them.
***
Derek's place was just as dark and dingy as it had been earlier. They laid Erica down in the middle of the train car per Derek's instructions.
"Is she dying?" asked Stiles.
Derek shook his head. Cody could see the panic in his eyes. "I don't know...she could." He took hold of Erica's arm. "This is gonna hurt." With a snap, her broke Erica's arm. Her screams echoed off the iron walls.
"What the hell? You broke her arm!" exclaimed Stiles.
"It'll trigger the healing process," siad Derek. "But I still need to get the venom out. This is what's really going to hurt." He grabbed her arm again, but this time he dug his nails into the skin until it bled.
Erica continued to shriek and frantically Cody put her hands on Erica's cheeks, trying her hardest to pull the pain out. The two of them screamed until Erica began to calm down and close her eyes. Cody was afraid she was going to pass out, but she was also thankful because now she could handle the pain that flowing from Erica's veins to hers.
Erica's eyes fluttered open for a moment and she looked up at Stiles, an almost dreamy expression on her face. "You make a good Batman, Stiles," she said. Then she actually did pass out.
***
Cody and Stiles could hear Scott and Derek arguing on the other room. Scott was laying down the law, making it clear that they weren't going to kill Jackson, they were going to stop him. To Cody's surprise, Derek didn't argue back.
Cody sat back against one of the seats and let out a sigh. She could feel the exhaustion down in her bones. It had been a long day.
"I just don't understand," she said quietly. Stiles looked at her questioningly. "What the connection between all the victims is. It just doesn't make sense why whoever is controlling Jackson would want them dead."
"I don't know," said Stiles, sitting down next to Cody. "But maybe when we catch Jackson he can give us some clue. Sounds like Scott and Derek are working out a plan now."
Cody shook her head as she strained to listen. "I don't know," she said. "I have a feeling..." she trailed off, unsure of what to say next.
"No, no," siad Stiles. "Don't just say 'I have a feeling' and not give me anything else. Bad things happen when you have a 'feeling.' Very bad things." Cody shook her head, biting at the skin on her lip nervously. "Don't say it," said Stiles.
"I just have a really bad feeling about this," said Cody.
Stiles gave an irritated gesture and shook his head. "Yep," he said. "That's exactly what I didn't want you to say."
