Chapter 47
05:23, 30 September 2013"Are you freaking serious?!" The look on her face was priceless. Just to play with her a little bit I didn't say anything. "AVERY! Are you or are you not staying in Huntington?!" Adrianna grabbed ahold of my shoulders and started shaking me violently. I started laughing.
"It's true, Ade. I'm staying." Her smile grew about twenty times wider and she tackled me.
"Oh my god! I can't believe it!!!! Thank god you're staying." Her voice muffled by my arm. I squirmed out from under her and sat up.
"I can't believe it either." I said still in awe. I couldn't even fathom what had just happened in the last ten minutes. Just then I heard a knock at the door. Selene popped her head through the door.
"I also have something to add to the excitement." She said handing Adrianna a paper folder.
"What's this?" Adrianna said accepting it and turning it over in her hands. There was no writing on the outside indicating where it was from. Before she could open it, her mom interjected.
"It's your school schedule. It came in the mail this morning." She said plainly. I wouldn't have thought twice about it until Adrianna crinkled her eyebrows and spoke.
"What do you mean? Westminster doesn't mail out your class schedules, you get them on the first day." she said. Selene just sat there in silence, smiling. Adrianna's eyes grew wide and she opened the folder so fast I'm surprised it didn't rip in half.
Her eyes ran up and down the page and she squealed excitedly and ran up and hugged her mom to death. "Thanks mom! When did you make the transfer?" She asked. Transfer? What transfer?
"In the beginning of the summer. It's your senior year; you should be able to go to school wherever you want. Plus it's closer so you don't have to spend all that money on gas." She smiled. Wait... closer? Is she-
Adrianna jumped up and down a few more times and ran over to me. She thrust the folder into my line of vision and motioned for me to open it up. There were several sheets of paper inside, the first one with a navy blue crest on the top of the page in the right corner. I read the sheet aloud.
"Dear Ms. Fisher, We at Westminster High School are sad to be informed that the previous year will have been your last with us. Although we are sad to see you go, we wish you all the best at your new school. In this envelope we have attached your school transcripts from Westminster that you will need to present on your first day of classes at your new establishment. Thank you, and good luck." I stared up at her looking for an explanation.
"No, don't read that one, that's old." She said pulling it out of the folder. "My mom just put that in there for safe keeping. Here read this." She pointed to the next sheet that held a small chart. As I looked closer it turned out t be Adrianna's class schedule for her senior year. I saw that she was taking Calculus, AP European History, Physics, and American Literature.
Okay... I thought to myself, what does this have to do with anything? My eyes traveled back up to the top of the page where there was all of Adrianna's information. Name, birthday, address...
"Oh my god." I said after seeing it. "You’re transferring to Huntington Beach High School?!" I asked happily. She nodded quickly and we both started to jump around happily together. "This means we are going to be at the same school together!" I practically shrieked. As we were happy dancing Owen trailed into Adrianna's room through the connecting bathroom.
"What's going on in here?" He asked suspiciously. Just about half an hour ago Owen saw me sitting in bed completely hungover. My head was still pounding, but I didn't care. I was way too happy. Owen just stared at us waiting for an answer. I turned my head in Adrianna's direction and we both exchanged a glance.
"Oh nothing... Just that Avery and I are going to be going to school together." Adrianna said smiling.
"You're moving to New Jersey? Sweet. I can turn this room into a home gym." Owen said clapping his hands together.
"Nope. I'm not moving." I said grinning.
"Wait, so you get to stay?" Owen's entire face lit up and he came over and grabbed me. Before I knew it I was being picked up off the ground and spun around in a circle. I laughed and lightly started slapping him to put me down.
At that moment Adrianna held up her red paper folder. "What's that?" Owen asked jerking his head in that direction. Adrianna tossed it to him and his eyes widened. "You got a schedule from HBHS?"
"Yep. I just transferred." She pulled a different sheet out of the folder. "And so did you." She grinned.
"Are you for real?" He asked, a shocked expression on his face.
"Yep. We start next Monday!"
"Avery, you were here, did she make these on Photoshop or something?" Owen asked not quite believing what was going on.
"Nope, they're legit." I told him. The smile on his face was so wide.
"Finally! No more of this private school shit, no more uniforms! We get to wear what ever we want." He said. Just by looking at their faces you could tell the twins were happy.
"Okay, that's it. It's time for a group hug!" I announced and squeezed them to death. They both seemed happy about it though. I was so glad that I didn't have to leave, words could not even describe how amazing I felt right now.
After Owen went downstairs Adrianna and I both flopped down on our beds. "It's going to be so weird not sharing a room with you anymore." I told her.
"Yeah, that is going to be weird." She agreed. "But at least you're not going to be across the continent. You'll just be on the other side of town, I can come visit you whenever I want." She beamed. I laughed and rolled over so I was looking up at the celling. "So..." She said changing the subject, "how did Wes take the news that you were staying?"
"Actually I haven't told him yet." I admitted. Out of the corner of my eye I saw her body shoot up and stare at me.
"What? Why not?" She asked surprised.
"I kind of wanted to show up at the party with you and surprise him." I smiled at my own idea.
"Awwww! That's so sweet! He'll be so surprised!" She gushed at my idea.
"I just really want this to be perfect." I told her. "Like a moment in one of those cheesy movies or something where the timing is perfect and everything works out."
"In that case maybe I should text Drew." Adrianna said pulling out her phone.
"Why?" I questioned.
"Just to make sure that Wes goes to the party. And that he doesn't do anything stupid." Why wouldn't he go? Wes has been looking forward to this party for weeks now. Adrianna must have noticed the confusion written across my face because she clarified. "When I talked to Drew this morning he said that Wes was kind of depressed about you leaving and that he didn't want to get out of bed and go to the gym this morning." She said.
I was suddenly struck by happiness that he actually cared so much about me. That just made me want to surprise him even more. "He's done so much for me, I have to make it up to him." I said out loud while simultaneously pondering my options. Finally I agreed to let Adrianna text Drew. A few minutes later he replied and was super stoked that I wasn't leaving. He promised to get Wes to the party without telling him I was going to be there.
"Avery!" My mother called from downstairs. I walked over to the banister sliding my phone into the front pocket of my jean shorts.
"Yeah?" I asked as I descended the stairwell. I saw her standing in the kitchen with my dad holding a mug full of freshly brewed coffee. She put the mug down on the table and motioned for me to join them.
"So, since you're going to be living with me for a while, it might make sense for you to have a bedroom, right?" My dad asked me with a smile. I brightened at the sound of that.
"Oh my god I get to pick my own room?!" I asked excitedly.
"And furniture." He added. I couldn't contain my excitement. I've always wanted to redo my bedroom back in NJ, but I never found the time to clean and box everything up.
"Ahh Awesome! Thanks." I said hugging both of my parents.
"Now I know you have plans tonight, so we don't have to go shopping today. There's a guest room that you can stay in tonight until we can order you a bed of your own for your bedroom. I hope you don't mind." He said.
"Do I mind? No way, that's totally fine! I'm actually still kind of shocked that you would let me stay with you." I laughed slightly.
"Yeah, maybe not the best idea, Rick. Beware, she leaves all her laundry on the floor and her shoes on the counter." My mom interjected. I smiled sheepishly hoping that comment didn't send my father running for the hills. He just laughed and rubbed the back of his neck.
"Laundry I don't mind, but if you promise not to leave your shoes on the counter, you can stay." He ruffled my hair.
"Okay, that I can do." I said, confident in my promise to him. He's letting me live with him. In Huntington Beach. Near Adrianna. And Wesley. The least I could do was not put my shoes on the counter anymore.
"Oh, and that dreaded skateboard of hers..." My mom trailed off. My dad let out a laugh and patted my mom on the shoulders.
"No worries, Tyler's already got one of those. I'm pretty used to watching where I step." He proceeded to tell a story about how he was walking in the kitchen a few weeks ago making his way to the fridge when he stepped right onto Tyler's board and wiped out. My mom and I laughed hysterically but my dad brought his fingers around to the back of his skull like he could still feel the bruise.
"It wasn't funny!" He exclaimed, but of course it was funny. I wish I could have been there to see it happen.
I had a feeling I was going to like my new life here in California.
