Chapter 27
19:31, 10 April 2015Misty's POV
I woke up the next morning to my alarm on my phone going off on my nightstand. I stretched my arms out not opening my eyes.
Okay so today I'll go to my classes and probably hang out with Seth today?
Okay.
I crawled out of bed and went into the bathroom to wash my face and brush my teeth. I closed the door behind me as I turned on the light. My eyes were puffy and squinty. The aftermath of crying the night before.
I tried washing my face a couple of times to make the puffiness go down a little bit but it barely worked. I'll just put on makeup. After spitting out the foamy toothpaste I plugged in my hair straightener deciding to straighten my awkward wavy hair that was bending in different directions.
After I finished taming my mane I unplugged the straightener and opened my bathroom door. I rubbed my eyes trying to take the puffiness away walking to my dresser to pick out clothes for today.
As I pulled open one of the drawers I hear groaning and a yawn behind me.
I dropped my clothes. I felt my heart pounding inside of me. What the fuck?
I was probably imagining things. My heart was still pounding as I picked my clothes up turning around.
"What the fuck! Calum?!"
I jumped and screamed and held my poor heart that was pounding so hard I swore Calum could've heard it across the room.
He just sat there and smiled lazily and waved.
"What are you doing here?"
I almost yelled realizing I was holding my bra separate from my actual clothes. I quickly wrapped my shirt around it clutching the pile to my stomach walking to the bathroom.
Calum didn't reply but he stood up from my bed and slowly walked to his duffel bag that was on the ground.
Why didn't I notice him while I was asleep? I was so confused. Why is he here? He has some guts to come back to me.
I couldn't care at this moment because I needed to get to my classes before they started. I quickly undressed and put my clothes on and checking my hair and applying some mascara so that my eyes didn't look too puffy.
I quickly ran out of my bathroom searching for my phone which was out of sight.
"Here."
Calum said holding out my phone to me. I took it and eyed him suspiciously.
"Thanks."
I didn't say anything else because I decide to give him the silent treatment for the day. I grabbed my book bag and took my keys off the night stand preparing myself before I went downstairs to grab a granola bar.
"Misty, are you mad at me?"
Calum asked before I opened my door. My heart stopped and I was speechless. I turned around and saw him sitting on my bed with his head down playing with his fingers.
"I don't know."
I sighed telling him truthfully. I tried avoiding any actual contact with him until I've made up my mind. I was ready to go opening my book bag counting my notebooks and textbooks until I felt a hand on my elbow.
"Can I-we fix this?"
His voice was low and pleading. I looked past him to my digital clock on my nightstand it was 9:30 already and I needed to leave.
"Cal-"
"Please."
His grip on my elbow tightened and his face became sad.
"I have to go."
My voice barely a whisper. I didn't want to talk to him but I did.
"I'll drop you off and we can talk."
He let go of my elbow and scratched the back of his neck. I bit my lip and nodded turning around to open the door. I jogged down the stairs walking to the kitchen. I opened the pantry door taking 2 granola bars and dropping them in my book bag.
"Morning Misty."
I heard Jess as I closed the pantry door. I turned around and gave her a small smile as I saw Calum walk in with his hand behind his neck.
"Calum."
She also said adding onto her morning greetings.
"Morning. I'll be back after class for dinner, Jess."
"Alright see you later!"
She waved at me and walked to the living room. I walked out of the kitchen avoiding eye contact with Calum who was leaning against the wall crossing his arms.
I opened the front door leaving it open for Calum to come as well. I saw his black car in the driveway next to my small white one. His headlights flashed signaling that Calum was unlocking his car.
I walked quickly to the passenger side before Calum could come and open the door for me. I might be late for my first class if we didn't hurry. After Calum got in I tried to rush him.
"We need to go now, please."
I clicked my seatbelt in and dropped my book bag on the ground where my feet were. He nodded and started the car driving out of the driveway.
We both sat in silence for 5 minutes before Calum broke the silence. I looked out the window watching the trees on the highway past by in a blurry flash.
"I came last night around 12:30 if you were wondering."
I turned my head to look straight. I caught Calum giving me small glances once in a while.
"Oh."
I could only say.
"I want to make things okay before-"
He stopped and I saw his hands tighten on the steering wheel.
"Before I leave."
My mind was swarming with thoughts. I didn't know what to say so I kept quiet. I got a notification on my phone again.
5 more days.
I sighed quietly quickly locking my phone and turning it over.
"Please say something."
I immediately looked up from my phone seeing Calum stare me down. We were at a red light waiting for the green light.
"What do I say?"
I turned to face him anger suddenly overcoming me.
"Oh yeah I found out the other day that my boyfriend was at his ex's. Oh did I tell you that they kissed? I just found out yesterday. What about you. How was your day?"
I said sarcastically throwing my hands up in the air.
"Misty I don't know how else to tell you I'm sorry!"
Calum said his voice rising as he stepped on the gas pedal.
"Well tell me why you were at her house? Did you go there because of her or because you wanted to?"
I said lowering my voice. I was scared of his answer. Scared of what he might say. Scared that it will break me open right in this moment. I was tired of crying. I didn't have any more tears to give to Calum anymore.
"Please tell the truth. I'm tired of finding it myself."
I leaned back on the seat leaning my head on the window. I heard Calum take a deep breath.
"She called me after you left for work yesterday."
He hesitated to turn a corner.
"She told me why she was being rude to you on the day I saw her. I believed her. I knew that she was crying because of what she did and I felt sorry for her because I knew that what she told me was true. So I went over to her house. Because I wanted to so that we could still be friends."
He stopped giving me a glance to check if I was listening or not. So far everything that he said was slowly tearing me apart from the inside.
"And that was when we got caught up in the moment and-"
"That's when you kissed her."
I finished his sentence not wanting to hear the words come out of his mouth. I saw Calum give a small nod looking at the road we were driving on. We then stayed quiet for the whole 5 minutes that was left until he parked the car next to the main gate and waited for me to get out. I took my book bag off the ground and dropped my phone in it.
"Can I pick you up later?"
Calum asked as I unlocked the door with my hand on the handle.
"No my friend will give me a ride home. Thanks anyways."
I opened the door and shut it behind me quickly walking off to my public speaking class. I walked alone all the way to the building it was located in. I took my ID out to scan it in the door so it would let me in. I opened the door to the auditorium to see about 20 people already seated. I walked to the very front and sat myself right in front of the professors desk so that I could actually pay attention and not think about my problem with Calum. I took out a pen and a new notebook just in case and flipped it open to the very first page.
The class didn't start until 10:20 and it was 10:15. I decided to catch up on my reading so I took out the book that I didn't bother to finish. It was called 'How to save a life'.
I opened it to the first page and started reading getting myself comfortable in the plastic chair the college provided. I flipped to the next page and continued reading. I heard the chair beside me move so I looked up and saw a boy with short brown hair take a seat right next to me.
"Is anyone sitting here?"
The mystery boy asked. His voice was deep. And when I say deep, I mean deeper than the ocean deep. Boys with deep voices always caught my attention. It was weird how captivating the sound was. I snapped back into reality as he cleared his throat and smiled at me giving me straight white teeth.
"Oh uh sorry. No. No ones sitting here."
I gave him a smile and turned back to my book closing it and sliding it back into my bag. The professor walked onto the stage-like area sitting at his desk.
"Good Morning class! I am Mr. Brisbane but I am commonly addressed as Mr. B."
Mr. B opened his black bag taking out a yellow folder and a notebook.
"Take out writing material for today's assignment."
I picked up my pen and wrote the date on the upper right hand corner.
"Every morning you are required to write a paragraph or more about the things that may improve your public speaking skills."
The professor stood up and went over to the podium adjusting his thin wired glasses.
"Since this is you're first day taking this class, you will be partnered with another individual to share your thoughts and ideas."
I froze realizing that I would be alone for this assignment. I looked around so see other students standing up and arranging seats so they could sit next to their friends. I Slowly sat down again slumping into my chair wanting to disappear. Having Seth as my only friend kind of sucked at this moment.
"Do you want to be my partner?"
A voice next to me asked. I turned to look at him surprised.
"Me?"
I said pointing to myself. He chuckled and nodded.
"Yeah you."
"Yeah I guess."
I shrugged and clicked my pen open.
"Oh by the way, the names Joseph but you can call me Jo."
"Hi Jo I'm Misty."
I gave him a smile and looked up at the professor who was writing in his own notebook.
"So I think our first bullet point should be 'a good voice'."
I nodded in approval and scribbled down his exact words. We continued to list plenty of our ideas on my notebook finishing it with 'great eye contact'.
"Done."
I said unclicking my pen and dropping it on my notebook.
"That was actually pretty easy."
Joseph laughed crossing his very muscular arms and leaning back on his chair. We talked for a while until the professor shushed us and called some groups up to speak using their ideas. The class shortly ended after the first three groups went. I slipped my notebook and pen back into my bag and slung it over my shoulder and got up pushing in my chair.
"Hey wait up."
I hear Joseph's voice behind me. I turned to see him pulling on his backpack quickly and jogging up next to me.
"I was just wondering."
He hesitated, adjusting his straps and shaking his backpack slightly.
"Have we met before? Because you seem very familiar."
I tried to recollect any memories that I've ever heard the name Jo or Joseph. I shook my head.
"No I don't recall anything."
I pushed open the door to the building we were just in holding it for Jo to walk out as well.
"Hm well I guess it's just a mistake then."
I nodded and walked down the stones pathway that led to the main gate where I was going to meet Seth to grab lunch.
"Are you getting lunch?"
"Yeah I'm going with my friend to the diner down 5th street."
"Sounds good. Mind if I join as well?"
He was tall so he looked down at me and quirked an eyebrow at me. I smiled and rolled my eyes.
"No I don't mind."
We were almost to the main gate. I saw Seth leaning against the iron of the gate talking to another boy whose back was faced to me. It was probably one of his friends.
Once Jo and I got a little closer to them, Seth made eye contact with me and just gave me a sort of surprised face.
"Is that your boyfriend?"
"No that's my friend. My boyfriend's-"
I stopped walking as the boy turned around and made eye contact.
"Right there."
I said almost in a whisper. Joseph stopped walking with me. He just looked at me and looked in the direction where I was looking.
"Fuck."
I heard Joseph mumble through his teeth. I was still standing in the same spot not wanting to get any closer to him. Calum looked at Joseph then switched his gaze towards me. I saw him stuff his hands in his pockets before starting to walk towards us.
Calum stopped about 5 feet away from us.
"Calum."
Joseph said bitterly squinting his eyes. I saw Calum swallow and blink a couple of times before responding.
"Joseph."
I was confused. How did they know each other. I was going to speak but as they say, actions speak louder than words right?
