1x15: Manhunt

14:22, 9 January 2025

***

Hunter was sitting in the roll call room watching the video that the rookies got punked into filming by her, seeing as it was her idea and she was looking forward to it.

Inspirational music plays over an image of the American flag and the LAPD shield. CUT TO WEST standing in the station lobby, where he and Nolan are obviously filming a recruitment video.

"Good morning, Officer Nolan. Ready for another exciting day out on the streets of Los Angeles?" Jackson asked on the video.

"Yep. Coffee?" Nolan asked.

"No, thanks, I get all the rush I need from making this beautiful city of ours safer every single day." Jackson said.

Lucy enters with a smile. "And you will too if you join the LADP. I mean PD."

Hunter chuckled under her breath, Grant kicked her shoe and she glared at him.

"Cut! Go again." The director said.

Another take is played.

"And you will too - Um, I'm sorry. What do I say again?" Lucy asked.

"Cut!" The director yelled.

"LAPD." Jackson and Nolan said to Lucy.

Another take is played.

"Action." The director said.

"I do too. And so will you if - as well if you join the LA ..."

"Cut!"

"I need to spit out my gum." Nolan said.

Another take is played.

"Action."

"And that's why we joined the LAPD."  Jackson, Lucy and Nolan said.

Grey presses pause on the video amid laughter from the viewers. "L.A.'s finest." He comments.

"Okay, guys, I know there were a few stumbles in there, yes, in the beginning, but this is Hollywood, right? They fix that stuff in the editing. I think this video's gonna make the department very proud." Nolan said to his friends.

"Officer Bradford, would you like the honor?" Grey asked.

"Actually, sir, I think that should go to Detective Lopez - the whole thing was her idea." Tim said grinning at his friend.

"Lopez?" Grey asked Hunter.

"There is no promotional video." Hunter said.

"You got punked." Talia said.

Grant and Angela smirked at the rookies aghast looks.

Grey brings out a bowl of popcorn and continues to play the video, Hunter laughed and Grey chucked her a piece of popcorn.

"This sucks. I - This is awful." Lucy said on the video.

"No, you're doing good." Nolan said.

"Can I get more powder? I'm sweating blocks." Jackson asked.

"Can I get a copy of this for my kid?" Nolan asked the director.

Jessica Russo speaks to a group of officers. She's wearing a suicide bomb vest and holding a detonator. "We're all gonna die. Right here. Right now. This bomb is packed with C4, ball bearings, screws, broken glass. When this thing goes off, this whole room is gonna turn into a blender. And guess what. If you don't die instantly, you're gonna suffer fatal, secondary infections because I soaked the shrapnel in my own filth," Hunter makes a disgusted face. "Now, you've all been taught to shoot on sight when you see a bomber, right? But you can't shoot me, because I'm holding a dead man's switch. I let it go, it detonates. So your only shot at survival is to talk me into giving up. But you only have ten words to do it," Jessica points at Jackson. "Go." She said.

"U-Um, ma'am, you you don't want to do this." Jackson said.

"Boom," Jessica said releasing the plunger on the detonator mockup. "It's a slaughterhouse in here," Jessica points at Lucy. "Go." She said.

"Uh, my name is Lucy Chen, and -"

"Boom," Jessica once again releases the plunger. "They're IDing you through dental records." She said.

Hunter and Tim share a look and then both lunge forward to grab her. "Boom," Jessica is releasing the plunger again. "You two just got buried in a shoe box." She said to Hunter and Tim.

Jessica moves to Nolan who speaks. "I can only imagine the pain you're feeling right now." He said.

"You just got ten more words." Jessica said.

***

Out of her vest and in street clothes, Jessica addresses the cops in the briefing room. "Okay, so what did you all do wrong? Officer West started mansplaining. Officer Chen wasted time by introducing herself. And Officer Bradford and Detective Lopez both decided to skip words altogether." Jessica said pointing at the two officers.

Hunter scoffed and rolled her eyes. "They're overrated. If Hunter and I'd been a hair quicker, you'd be singing our praises." Tim said.

"But you weren't. So that means you fall into the fail category with everybody else except Officer Nolan," Jessica moved back to the front of the room. "What did he do right?" She asked.

"He expressed empathy." Talia said.

"You mean he faked it." Hunter corrected.

"It doesn't matter if it was real. The only thing that matters is how it comes across." Jessica said.

"Active listening plus empathy leads to a rapport, which leads to influence and ultimately behavioral change." Nolan said.

"Wow, you read my book." Jessica said with a smile.

"Twice." Nolan admits.

"Oh. Okay, well, I read your file. Actually, I read all of your files, but, um, nothing in your past indicates an ability to communicate with people like that. So why do you think that you're so good at it?" Jessica asked.

"Because of the training I received from Officer Bishop and Sergeant Grey." Nolan said.

"Boom," Jessica makes a button-pushing gesture. "You just betrayed our trust by giving me a political answer. Our rapport is ruined, and this room is now a horror movie." She said.

***

The rookies and Grant are getting their gear when officers run past with Talia stopping when she notices everyone looking confused. "What's going on?" Nolan asked.

"Prison transport crashed, loaded with convicts from the courthouse. Come on." Talia said, Grant, Jackson and Nolan ran towards Talia to follow her and the other officers seeing as they already had their gear.

"Get that gear, Boot. Let's go!" Tim yelled at Lucy.

"Yeah -"

"Let's go!" Tim then ran out with Hunter at his side.

"Yeah."

***

A fleet of patrol cars races up to the crash site, where a bus can be seen at the bottom of a hill, obviously damaged. One of the sheriff's deputies is staggering up to the road. "Hey, what happened here?" Grey asked.

"A coyote ran in front of the bus. Graham swerved. We went over." the deputy said.

"How many people on board?" Grey asked.

"20 prisoners, two other guards." the deputy said.

"Did any prisoners get away?" Grey asked.

"I think so." The deputy starts to sway and Grey catches him on the way down.

"Whoa, whoa, hey," Grey yelled to Hunter, Grant, Angela, Jackson and Nolan and some other cops. "Hey, get down there! Get me a head count." Grey grabbed his radio out and spoke into it. "Control, this is 7-L-20 at scene of crash." He said.

"I got this one." Jackson said seeing a body.

"I'm declaring a city-wide tactical alert. I need multiple RAs, scramble airships, and call additional units from Rampart and North Hollywood." Grey could be heard saying.

"He's dead." Jackson said.

"I need a hard perimeter set around the crash; assume a ten minute head start." Grey said.

Angela, Grant, Hunter, Nolan and Jackson find their way to the bus, which is on its side with the windshield shattered. Weapons drawn, they proceed to check inside.

Hunter sees some bushes moving near the site. "I got something over here, 10:00." She said.

"Check it out, be careful." Angela said to her sister, who nodded, she then speaks to an injured deputy. "Don't move. An ambulance is on its way. Can you give me a sit rep?" She asked.

"Seven of them escaped. They got my keys, my gun. They went out through the windshield." The wounded deputy said.

"All units, be advised, seven prisoners escaped from the bus. At least one is armed. Hang tight. We're gonna get you out of here, okay?" Angela said to him.

***

Hunter moves cautiously toward the bushes and spots a blood trail going into them. She follows it and hears heavy breathing, someone struggling. "Police. Stop!" She discovers the source of the sound - a man in a deputy uniform trying to drag himself along on the ground. As Hunter checks his injuries, he sees that the man's leg has been severed. "Hey, take it easy. Easy. Easy. I got you. Come on. I got you. I got you. Easy. 7-Adam-20, I need an RA unit immediately 60 yards east of the crash. 50-year-old male, life-threatening injuries," Hunter puts her radio away. "Okay, just stop moving, all right? Stop moving." She said to Graham.

"I gotta get help. I gotta get help." Graham said.

"Shh, shh. Help is here. Help is here. I'm right here. Hey, what's your name?" Hunter asked.

"Uh, Graham." He replied.

"Graham, I'm Hunter." Hunter said.

"Am I gonna die?" Graham asked.

"No! No, come on. No, you're not gonna die. You're - You're gonna be fine, okay? You're gonna be okay. You just hang on. All right? Okay? Hang on." Hunter said.

"Okay. O-Okay." Graham replied.

***

"7-Adam-19, almost on site." Lucy said into the radio.

"Negative, we have at least seven fugitives at large in surrounding neighborhoods. Start a grid search, coordinate with 7-Adam-13, 18, and 26." Grey replied.

Lucy spots a man in a tell-tale orange jumpsuit running around a corner. "There!" Tim starts following the fugitive and Lucy grabs the radio. "7-Adam-19, in pursuit of fugitive suspect, heading North on Maple." She said.

They pursue, and the man turns and fires a gun at their shop. "Down!" The man keeps moving toward them, firing as he goes, and once he's close enough Tim knocks him down with the shop door. "Get on your stomach! Get on your stomach! Let's go. Let's go. Hands behind your back." He ordered.

"Okay, okay." The fugitive said and Lucy cuffed him.

***

"7-Adam-20, where the hell is my ambulance?" Hunter asked into the radio.

"Tell her - Tell her -" Graham tried to say.

"Tell who? Tell who?" Hunter asked.

"T-Tell her I love her." Graham said.

"Tell who? Graham, who do you want me to tell?" Hunter asked.

"Beth." Graham said.

"Okay." Hunter promised.

Hunter watches as Graham dies. Sitting back, he takes a moment, but is then attacked from behind by a fugitive wrapping his chains around Hunter's throat. She is being dragged back into the bushes and trying to keep the chains from choking him. He manages to get out his pepper spray and sprays it backward over his head, giving his captor a face full. The fugitive yells and drops Hunter, who gets on his knees and points his gun at the man. "Don't move!"

Grant, Angela and Jackson arrive at the scene. "Hunter? You okay?" Angela asked.

"Yes." Hunter replied.

"Get control of him." Grant said, Jackson cuffs the prisoner as Hunter looks sadly back at Graham's body.

***

"All right, listen up. This is what we know so far. So, we have seven fugitives at large -" Grey was saying.

"Six." Tim corrects arriving with his fugitive.

"Good work. Correction, we have six fugitives at large." Grey was saying.

"Five." Hunter corrects, Tim smiles slightly and nods his head.

"At this rate, I'd say we'd be home for dinner, but I know better. A prisoner on foot can sustain a pace of four miles per hour. And the clock started ticking 20 minutes ago. So we have a hard perimeter set up a mile out. If it was set up in time, it's just a matter of going door-to-door and running these fugitives down. If a fugitive gets past our perimeter, this turns from a recovery operation to a manhunt. And that puts the entire city at risk. So Bishop, Wong, Mitchell, Pileggi, your shops will fall back and man the perimeter. Bradford, Lopezes, Keegan, and Willis, you'll join the grid search inside the zone. Command will advise you on the identities of the guys you're chasing as soon as we get them, but for now, assume that they are all extremely dangerous. Let's go get 'em." Grey said.

A fleet of patrol cars race to where they needed to be at all times.

***

Tim and Lucy are cruising the neighborhood and see a man unloading groceries from his car. "Sir, there's a shelter in place order in effect. We need you in your house." Tim said.

"Okay." the man with groceries said.

Lucy sees a group of men with weapons walking down the street. "Oh. Tim."

Tim and Lucy get out of their shop with their weapons drawn. "Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. Get your hands where I can see them. Now!" Tim yelled.

One of the men, Lewis moves forward and Lucy stops him. "No, stay right there."

"It's okay. We got permits for the weapons, and our ammo is stored separately, so it's legal." Lewis said.

"I don't care if it's legal. No good's gonna come from you guys running around here with assault rifles." Tim snapped.

"We heard prisoners were on the loose. We got a right to protect our neighborhood." Lewis said.

"Yeah, that's a job for law enforcement, not a ragtag militia." Lucy said.

Darrell one of the men, emerges from a side yard with a hand on the collar of an ordinary-looking middle-aged man named Hector. "Got one! Got a fugitive!" Darrell yelled.

"Hey, get off me, man. I didn't do anything. Officers, please." Hector said.

"Hey, let him go. That's not who we're looking for." Tim said.

"I kept telling him that!" Hector yelled.

"You sure? He looks guilty as hell to me. At least check his papers." Darrell said.

"Let him go. Right now," Lucy speaks directly to Hector. "Are you okay?" She asked.

"No, you should be arresting them." Hector said.

"Hey, screw that. The law says we're allowed to defend our neighborhood "when in grave danger."" Lewis snapped.

"I was trimming a hedge!" Hector yelled.

"All right, look, that's enough. Get back," Tim spoke up, he then spoke to Hector. "Look, as bigoted as they are, they thought they were making a citizen's arrest, so they haven't broken the law." He said.

"But their names will be in our report, so if you'd like to sue them for emotional damages, you can." Lucy said with a smirk.

"Whoa, hey, now - How about we just all, uh, go back and secure our home fronts. No hard feelings." Lewis suggested, Hector nods slightly, still annoyed.

"Fine. If I find out that you're back out here again, I'll have you arrested for violating California Penal Codes 372 and 647b. You got that?" Tim asked. The men mutter and depart the scene.

Lucy and Tim walk back to their shop. "647b is the code for prostitution." Lucy said.

"They don't know that." Tim replied.

***

"All units, possible fugitive sighting. Parking garage 19558 Sunset Boulevard." Dispatch said.

Hunter and Grant arrive on scene and the Valet comes running up to their shop. "Guy in an orange jumpsuit took a bunch of keys, ran up the ramp." The Valet said.

"7-Adam-20, show us Code 6 on fugitive suspect." Hunter said.

They park the shop sideways to prevent any cars from getting past them, then move along the rows of cars with their weapons drawn. Hunter hears a car alarm chirp, then a sedan comes hurtling down the ramp and pulls up just in time to avoid hitting the patrol car. Hunter and Grant run up to the car.

"Police! Turn off the engine and get out of the car now! Show me your hands. Open the door from the outside. Get down on your stomach." Hunter ordered.

"What's your name?" Jackson asked cuffing him.

"Oscar Hutchinson." Oscar replied.

"Control, we have fugitive Hutchinson in custody." Hunter said into her radio.

"I was only running because I thought the bus was gonna explode." Oscar said.

"Uh-huh, is that why you stole a car, too?" Grant asked, hauling Oscar to his feet.

"I always loved driving. Ah, I've been locked up for decades. I was kind of hoping to get a little "me" time in before you guys caught me." Oscar said.

"I hope it was enough, 'cause your sentence is only gonna get longer now." Grant said.

"Oh, I'm in forever, son. Every moment out here is gravy." Oscar replied, Hunter and Grant shared a worried look.

***

The cops are at the mobile command centre, Grey's addressing them. "So, our good news first. Three more fugitives were apprehended, leaving just two at large. But those two are gonna be hell to catch. Which is why command asked Jessica Russo to assist us," Grey moved aside. "Jessica?" He asked.

"Yeah, so at this point, we're gonna have to assume that these guys have gotten past the perimeter, which means that we're gonna have to get inside their heads to figure out where they're gonna go." Jessica said.

Hunter and Tim both scoff. "Predictive analytics." They muttered.

"You sound skeptical." Jessica comments.

"No, ma'am. I just found the best way to catch a criminal is to hit the streets." Tim and Hunter said.

"Well, that's because you have no experience doing it any other way," Hunter and Tim roll their eyes and Jessica points to a mug shot on the screen. "Marcos Gibson. Only 24 years old, but he's been a member of the 54th Street gang for over a decade. He was recently sentenced to 12 years in Victorville for aggravated assault and attempted murder." She said.

"The 5-4 will do everything they can to help him get away." Grey said.

"Including spiriting him out of the state." Talia adds.

"Hunter and I've got a contact inside the five-four that might be able to give us some insight." Tim said gesturing between himself and Hunter.

"Go talk to him both of you." Grey said, Hunter and Tim nodded.

"Okay, good. Our next fugitive is Caleb Jost. He is, in my opinion, the more dangerous of the two. He is 44 years old, a former investment banker. Sentenced five years for securities fraud and another eight for biting off the nose of his Deputy AG during his arrest," Nolan raises an eyebrow at that. "He is testament to the fact that psychopaths can carry a briefcase as easily as a grab bag." She said.

"The FBI believes Caleb hid significant resources before he was arrested." Grey said.

"Which he's gonna need to avoid going back to prison." Jessica added.

"So we have to dig into the FBI leads and figure out the location of that money before he gets there." Nolan said.

"That's exactly right. Are you up for the challenge, Officer Nolan?" Jessica asked.

"Yes, ma'am." Nolan said.

***

"Ange, can you and West process Oscar Hutchinson with Grant? I'm gonna help Tim and Lucy." Hunter said.

"Sure." Angela said.

"You're stuck with my sister." Hunter said turning to Grant, who nodded once and followed Angela with Oscar in tow, heading towards the booking area.

***

Hunter catches up with Tim and Lucy in the bullpen. "What's predictive analytics?" Lucy asked.

"Using data from the past to predict the future. Feds love that kind of stuff. They'd rather sit in front of a computer than hit the streets and scuff their loafers." Tim said.

"Still, if it helps solve a crime or find a fugitive, isn't it worth using?" Lucy asked.

"Whose side are you on?" Hunter and Tim scoffed.

"I didn't know there were sides. But yours, definitely yours." Lucy said.

They meet up with Deacon Joe in the lobby. "Deacon, thanks for coming in." Tim said.

"No problem. I figured I'd be hearing from you or Hunter today." Deacon gave Hunter a quick hug and shaking Tim's hand.

"Hi." Lucy said.

"Hi. Deacon Joe." Deacon said, shaking Lucy's hand.

"Lucy Chen." Lucy said.

"Bradford's next victim. I remember when your T.O. and his dearest best friend were the ones wearing the long sleeves." Deacon said.

"Oh, you got pictures?" Lucy asked.

"I like her." Deacon said.

"I'm thrilled," Tim said dryly before turning to Lucy. "Deacon was mine and Hunter's first arrest. Also one of the few to be rehabilitated in maximum security prison." He explained.

"Wait, you two arrested him at the same time?" Lucy asked.

"Yeah, we both caught him doing something illegal and chased him, getting there at the same time, so we both got the arrest." Hunter explained.

"Man, I swear to God, every time I see you or Hunter, it's like a time machine. I mean, since we met, I did six years in Chino, got clean, left the life, started up a family. Only thing that changed about you is the lines on yours and Hunters face." Deacon said to Tim.

"What lines?" "What lines?" Hunter and Tim asked in sync.

Hunter rolled her eyes at Deacon. "If you were expecting to hear from me or Tim, then you know why you're here. Marcos Gibson. Look, I need to get to him before he hooks up with the 5-4." She said.

"Yeah, Marcos was one of my kids for a while. I lost him to the 5-4. But they're the last place he's gonna go right now." Deacon said.

"Why?" Hunter asked her interested piqued.

"He was knocking boots with Keon's woman. Right before the trial." Deacon said, Tim sighed.

"Who's - Who's Keon?" Lucy asked.

"Leader of the 5-4. This kid must have a death wish." Tim said.

"Yeah, if Keon gets ahold of Marcos before you guys do, he'll kill him." Deacon said.

***

Lucy was refiling her and Tim's coffees while Hunter was making her own coffee when Jackson came into the breakroom. "Hey, uh, have you seen Lopez?" Jackson asked.

"Oh, uh, yeah, she's in the bullpen talking to Tim, and Lucy's just getting them some fuel before we hit the street. You okay?" Hunter asked.

"Yeah. No. Look, I-I don't know. This fugitive we grabbed has been getting under my skin. Basically said that my dad was a dirty cop back in the day." Jackson said.

Hunter scoffed. "Your dad? No way. That guy's just trying to push your buttons." Lucy said.

"Right?" Jackson asked.

"Yeah. Commander West is I.A. This guy is -" Hunter trailed off.

"An ex-drug dealer who is doing life for murder." Jackson said.

"See? Case closed." Hunter said.

"Thank you. Uh, when you two put it that way, I don't even know why I was worried." Jackson said.

"Yeah, I mean, your grandma, on the other hand, I heard she'd cut a bitch for a dollar back in the day." Lucy said walking out with Jackson.

"Back in the day? Hell, that woman will cut a bitch now." Jackson said, Hunter smiled and followed them.

***

Tim was in the bullpen with Angela. "Hey, uh - you think I've changed since you've met me?" He asked.

"You got more annoying." Angela smirked.

"I'm serious. Have I changed at all?" Tim asked.

"Sure. I mean you've certainly changed from the eighteen year old I met when I was twelve when Mom made Hunter bring you to Hunter's goodbye party before you both got deployed." Angela said.

"How? What do you mean?" Tim asked.

"You're older. What you went through with Isabel certainly changed you." Angela said.

"Made me different, or just made me more - me?" Tim asked.

"What's this about?" Angela asked, frowning.

"Just wondering if I've been treading water a little you know, not challenging myself." Tim said.

"Since when does Tim Bradford do introspection? Why're asking me anyway? Hunter knows you best." Angela said.

"Never mind." Tim said.

Lucy comes up with the coffees, handing one to Tim, Hunter close behind her. "Hey. We got a plan of action to find Marcos?" Hunter asked.

"Hit the streets, sweat some more of his people," Tim turns to Angela. "I'll see you later." He said.

"Hey, Bradford. You've also gotten dumber. Does that count?" Angela asked.

"What was that about?" Lucy asked.

"Inside joke." Tim said.

"Liar." Hunter hummed, Tim shoots her a look and she just smiles, taking a sip of her coffee when her phone chimes and she grabs it out. "Hot damn." She said, showing it to Tim.

"What is it?" Lucy asked.

"Text from Deacon. He's got Marcos." Tim said, the three of them leave.

***

They turn into a street where several men are milling around talking, Hunter was sitting in the seat at the front behind the center console where the radio was, that way she wasn't seated in the back if they arrested someone.

"Control, show us on site at 1115 Amador Street," Tim said into the radio. "Damn it. 5-4 must've heard Marcos is at Deacon's house." He said.

"What do we do?" Lucy asked.

"Keep your cool and get ready for trouble." Hunter said as Tim got his weapon out.

"Hello, Officer. Lovely evening." Keon said peering into the shop.

"Sure is. What are you guys doing out here?" Tim asked.

"Oh, you know, just exercising our constitutional right to assemble." Keon replie.d

"God bless America." Tim said.

"Mm-hmm." Keon replied.

"Well, I suggest you all assemble somewhere else." Tim advised.

"Is that an order?" Keon asked.

"Consider it a little friendly advice." Hunter said from where she was sitting.

"Well, we appreciate you looking out for us, Officers, but we ain't going nowhere." Keon said.

"Then maybe I'll see you later." Tim said.

"Count on it." Keon moves away.

Tim rolls his window up and gets on the radio as he pulls into Deacon's driveway. "Control, patch me through to 7-L-20." He said.

"7-Adam-19, report." Grey said.

"Yeah, we got a bit of a situation here, Sergeant. Approximately 15 gang members are gearing up to take out our fugitive, Marcos Gibson. Chen, Lopez and I made it through their lines, but the 5-4's gonna come after this guy soon." Tim explained.

"I just sent all available units to Nolan's hostage situation over in Culver City. But I will reorient some back to you." Grey said.

"Sir, this is a family neighborhood. If bullets start flying, a lot of kids are gonna get hurt." Tim said.

"What are you saying, Bradford?"

Hunter made a gesture and Tim handed the radio to her. "Have the units stage away from our location until overwhelming force arrives. Anything less than that's gonna come with a body count. We'll do our best with what we got until then." She said.

Hunter, Tim and Lucy all get out and walk up to Deacon's house. "What are the odds they'll change their minds and leave?" Lucy asked more cars pull up and more men get out. "Oh, come on." Lucy said sounding annoyed.

Tim knocks on the door and Deacon opens it, Hunter and Lucy go and join Tim at the porch. "What are we gonna do?" Deacon asked.

"Let's start with you letting us in." Tim said.

***

Marcos is standing in Deacon's living room. "First time I've ever been happy to see cops." He comments.

"Hook him up, Boot." Tim said.

"What? Whoa, hang on. No, you - I gotta keep my hands free in case I gotta fight." Marcos states.

"I hate to break it to you, but if this gets to fighting, your hands aren't gonna help. Turn around. Turn around. Now." Lucy said cuffing Marcos.

"Can we escape out the back?" Hunter asked.

"No, no, they got guys out there, too. I saw them when Keon rolled up." Deacon said.

"Bring him out! We know he in there! We'll be here all night. Trying to act like this fool ain't here. Yo, send that little punk on out! Bring him out already!" The men outside yelled in succession.

***

Hunter, Tim and Lucy are looking out the window at the crowd of men, who are whacking at their patrol car with baseball bats, Hunter winces. "That's gonna be a lot of paperwork for you, Boot." Tim states.

"Seriously? That's what you're thinking about right now?" Lucy glances over at Marcos and then back to Tim and Hunter, she moved closer and lowered her voice. "Hypothetically, is there ever a scenario where we just, you know, give them what they want? Where we, you know, balance one life against the lives of many lives and make that hard call?" She asked.

"That call isn't ours to make. Look, we're here to serve and protect. We don't get to decide who we serve or who we protect." Hunter said.

"So you're willing to die for that guy?" Lucy asked.

"Tim and I are unwilling to let fear make us do something we'll be ashamed of in the light of day." Hunter said.

Deacon opens the front door. "Whoa, hey, where are you going?" Lucy asked.

"I'm gonna talk." Deacon goes outside.

Tim and Hunter move to follow him. "Damn it. You stay here. No matter what happens to me and Hunter, you protect him." Tim said to Lucy.

"I will." Lucy said. Tim and Hunter walk out.

***

Keon has punched Deacon in the stomach when Tim and Hunter come walking up. "Hey, leave him alone. You want to beat someone up, we're right here." Tim said gesturing between himself and Hunter, knowing she'd never back down from a fight.

"Only one I want is Marcos. You give him up, we out of here." Keon said.

"We can't do that." Tim said.

"Look, I got no beef with you, the lady cop or Joe. But that fool in there, he was creeping with my old lady. So he gots to get dealt with!" Keon yelled over Tim's shoulder. The men murmured in agreement. "Give up. You're alone. Outnumbered." Keon said.

"You know, it was pointed out to me today that I've been doing patrol a long time. Maybe too long. You know, I've seen a lot of friends move up and on. Promotions. Other agencies." Tim said.

"I don't give a damn, Cop." Keon snapped.

"Well, you should. 'Cause one thing we've learned all these years is that we're never alone. And we're never outnumbered." Hunter said. A helicopter can be heard overhead, and a spotlight falls on Keon and Hunter and Tim as other cops move in on the group. Tim and Hunter draws their weapons and them at Keon. "You're under arrest. Turn around, get down on your knees. Turn around! Hands behind your head." Hunter said, Keon listened and Hunter cuffed him.

Tim turned to the window that Lucy was looking out of and yelled. "Call it in, Boot." He said.

Lucy lifts the radio. "7-Adam-19, last fugitive in custody. Show us Code 4." She said.

***

Hunter was watching as the fugitive's where placed into a new prison transport. "You ready for him, Elizabeth?" A deputy asked.

"Yeah." Elizabeth replied.

"Elizabeth?" Hunter asked.

"Yeah?" She replied.

"Anyone call you "Beth"?" Hunter asked.

"Why?"

"Did you know Graham? The deputy who passed away?"

"Well, yeah. We - We worked together for the last five years." Elizabeth said.

"I was with him when he died. He asked me to pass a message along to Beth." Hunter said.

"What message?"

"He told me to tell her he loved her." Hunter said.

"You're lying." Elizabeth said, getting teary eyed.

"No, that's the last thing he said. Is that you? Were you together?" Hunter asked.

"He was, um my friend. There was a time that I, um I thought he'd ask me out. I wanted him to. He never did." Elizabeth said.

"Well, I think he regretted that in the end. I'm sorry for your loss." Hunter said.

"Thanks." Elizabeth said, Hunter smiled and walked off, deciding to go to the gym that the Division had, she needed to relief the stress of the day.

***

Tim steps into Grey's office. "Hey. Oh, sorry, I-I can come back." He said noticing Jessica in there talking to him.

"No. What's on your mind?" Grey asked.

"I, um I was thinking about taking the sergeant's exam."

"Really?" Grey asked.

"You think it's a bad idea?"

"I think it's about time." Grey replied.

"I hear there might be some openings coming up." Jessica said brightly.

Grey gives her a look. "The test is in a couple months. That means you're gonna cram a hell of a lot of studying in to get ready. You up for it? Otherwise you have to wait two years for the next exam." He reminds.

"Yeah, I am. Thanks." Tim said.

"No problem." Grey replied.

"It's nice to meet you." Tim said to Jessica.

"Yes." Jessica replied and Tim departs the office.

Tim runs into Angela in the bullpen while looking for Hunter. "Hey, have you seen Hunter?" He asked.

"Uh, she's in the gym I think." Angela replied.

"Thanks, see you tomorrow Ange." Tim said.

"Good night." Angela said.

Tim walks into the gym seeing Hunter in her fitness clothes, sports bra and matching shorts that came with the outfit seeing as it was a matching set, her hair was in a high ponytail and beating the ever living shit out of the punching bag. "Relieving the stress of the day?" Tim asked.

Hunter placed a hand on the bag to stop it swinging at her, she turned to Tim wiping the sweat from her forehead as she grabbed a drink of water. "Yep." She said before taking a swig of her water.

"Good, taking it out on a punching bag works. Want a hand making sure it doesn't swing to far away?" Tim asked.

"Yeah, that's be good actually." Hunter said standing up and Tim moved and held the bag, Hunter talking as she pummels the bag. "That deputy didn't deserve to die, he lost his leg." She said.

"I know but that's what happened, how'd he lose his leg?" Tim asked.

"Somehow he lost it in the crash." Hunter as she continues pummeling the bag.

I enjoyed this episode.

We're almost at the end of season one, there for making us almost halfway through the first book in Hunter and Tim's story.

This book will have season 1-4 obviously.

The second book will have seasons 5-? Seeing as we don't know how many seasons there will be, if there's more than just seven (which I hope, I love the rookie and hope they continue it for as long as possible) I'll add that to book two.

Each book of Hunter and Tim's story will have four seasons.
