Chapter 12
07:03, 12 October 2017The board members sat at the table, looking towards Owen as he finished up his presentation with them.
"So what do you think?" Owen asked
"I like it" Callie replied
"Me too" Arizona added
"This is actually a genius idea Hunt!" Derek said as the others nodded in agreement
"Glad you like it, but it's not my idea, it's Dr. Kepner's," he said "She's always wanting to improve the ER, so she came up with these ideas"
"That's her third genius idea this week" Derek commented
"Yeah she's on a roll" Arizona added
"And she's extra perky," Callie said
All suddenly turned to Jackson.
"What?" he asked confused
"Did you give her some Jackson Action?" Cristina asked with a grin
"Did I what?" Jackson asked more confused
"Did you sleep with April?" Meredith translated
"No!" Jackson quickly denied
"Then why is she so perky and full of genius ideas?" Callie asked
April was indeed a little extra perky that week, and her mind was filled with ideas. Telling Jackson about everything lifted some weight off her shoulders. Her mind was a little more at ease to focus on work.
"Maybe it's because Jackson knocked her up," Cristina said
Jackson bowed his head and shook his head, he knew where this was going. Owen and Derek sat back, this conversation looked like it was going to be entertaining.
After telling Alex about his conversation with April at the bar, he decided to rat it out to Meredith and Cristina. They promised that they would keep their mouths shut about the situation, but it seemed like they couldn't hold it in any longer.
"Yeah the Avery genius maybe seeped out from Lydia into her" Meredith added
"Wait, what?" Arizona asked
"Lydia is your daughter?" Callie asked surprised
Jackson nodded.
"Awwww" Callie gushed "That explains her eyes"
"Sadly that's the only thing she got from you, she just as annoying as Kepner," Cristina said
"She's not annoying ok" Jackson defended "And she got other things from me too"
"Awww look at papa bear, standing up for his baby" Cristina teased
"Shut up" Jackson stated
"Wait a minute..." Arizona said as she calculated the dates in her head "If Lydia is your daughter, then that means..."
"You slept with a married woman" Callie finished
"Wait, what about Matthew?" Arizona asked
"Oh, he divorced her when she told him that she was carrying an Avery fetus" Meredith informed
"Oh," Arizona said, "So how did you find out about her?"
"Well my meddling mother, of course, noticed some things about Lydia and told me about it. After a while of denial, I asked April, and she told me." Jackson answered
"Does Lydia know?" Callie asked
"No, not yet. We plan on telling her this week through" Jackson answered
"Yeah you better tell her soon, we don't want her growing up with daddy issues," Cristina said
"And we all know what happens to an Avery with daddy issues," Meredith said with a grin
"Yeah they slept with married people" Callie added getting an eye roll from Jackson
Just then Derek's pager went off. He pulled it out and read it.
"As much as I would love to stay here and hear all about how Jackson knocked up April with an Avery fetus, I have a craniotomy to do. So see you guys later" he said getting up to leave
"Alright, the meeting is officially over. Get back to work" Owen said packing up his papers.
The doctors stood up from their seats and headed to the door, into the hallway.
"See you guys later," Callie said
"Bye" they replied walking in different directions
"Bye home wrecker" Cristina yelled going down the opposite hallway to Jackson
Jackson rolled his eyes "Bye Yang"

April sat in the living room watching a movie. Tomorrow was the day, the day she finally told Lydia who Jackson really was. The past three weeks, after meeting her at the bar, Jackson had been coming over a lot. Lydia just saw it as Jackson coming over to hang out with Alex, but he was there to spend more time with her. April and Jackson thought they should spend time together before they drop the news
Lydia was now upstairs, asleep in her room. She and her mom were going to spend the whole day with Dr. Jackson at the park, so she wanted to get a good nights rest so she could have enough energy to play.
As April sat there, Jo came down into the living room.
"What movie are you watching?" Jo asked sitting next to her on the couch
"Uh..." April said trying to remember "Actually have no idea what movie I'm watching. I'm too busy worrying about tomorrow"
Jo smiled "You don't have to worry about tomorrow, everything will go great"
"I know but, how do I even begin to tell her that Jackson is her father?" April asked
"You just simply tell her that Jackson is her dad. You don't have to go all into detail about your past, all she has to know, for now, is that Dr. Jackson is her dad" Jo advised
As she sat there listening to Jo, she remembered having the same conversation with Natalie back in Ohio.
FLASHBACK
"Auntie Natalie!" Lydia cheered as Natalie walked into the living room
"Hey Lydia" Natalie smiled at her
"Guess what? I'm going on a plane!" she boasted
"You are?" Natalie asked getting a nod to response "And where are you going?"
"To Seattle" she answered, "Mommy says we're moving there"
April stepped into the living room.
"Lydia go upstairs and get your stuff, we leave in thirty minutes" she instructed
"Ok" Lydia excitedly answered as she left the living room and ran up the stairs
"So she doesn't know why she's moving in the first place?" Natalie asked once Lydia a was upstairs
"No she doesn't, not yet anyway" April replied
The two walked from the living room to the kitchen.
"How do I even tell Jackson about her?" April said
"You just tell it like it is. Explain everything, don't leave anything out"
"And how do I tell Lydia?"
"Just tell her that he's her dad. You don't have to go into detail about the affair, she'll know about that when she's older." Natalie answered
April nodded.
After finally getting everything packed and in the car, the three stood in the driveway.
"Bye Auntie Natalie" Lydia smiled hugging her
"Bye sweetie" She smiled giving her a tight hug
After the hug, Lydia ran to the car and got into the back, leaving her mother and Natalie standing alone.
"Are you sure you're ready for this?" Natalie asked
"Not really but...." April began looking back at Lydia "She keeps asking about him, she wants to know, and she has right to. Jackson has a right to know too"
They pulled each other into a hug.
"I'll miss you" Natalie stated trying to hold back the tears
"I'll miss you too," April said before pulling out of the hug
"Call me when you guys get there Ok?"
"I will" she smiled
April gave Natalie one last hug before she walked over to the car. She went to back seat to make sure that Lydia's seat belt was secure. Once she checked, she walked over to the driver's side and got in. She checked her mirrors before turning the key. She backed out of the drive and into the street. She put the gear in drive and looked up at Natalie and smiled.
"Bye!" Natalie waved
"Bye!" April and Lydia said in unison
April slowly pulled away from the house.
"I'll come visit you guys soon" Natalie yelled out as the car left
April honked her horn, indicating that she heard. As she drove, she watched as the house grew further and further away.
"Mommy, what's Seattle like?" Lydia asked as she sat in the back seat
"It really big, and it rains a lot" she replied
Lydia frowned "I don't like rain," she said
"I know but it's really cool there. There are ferry boats and there's the Space Needle" April said
"What's a Space Needle?" Lydia asked she had never heard of it
"Well, it's really tall building in Seattle............" April began describing
They continued to talk on their way to the airport, Lydia found the Ferry boats and space needle very interesting. April was finally doing it, finally doing what she should have done a few years ago. But like people always say, better late than never, right?
End of Flashback
"Just tell her" Jo added again "she's not gonna want to know about the past, she'll just be excited that Jackson's her dad"
"You think she'll be happy that he's her dad?" April asked
"Of course she is! She adores Jackson. If she had a chance to choose her own dad, I bet she'll choose him" Jo said causing a smile on April's face.
April felt a little more confident about the situation. Lydia did adore Jackson, and she talked a lot about him when she got the chance. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad.
___________
"Dr. Jackson's here, Dr. Jackson's here!" Lydia announced running to the front door.
Once she got there, opened it.
"Hey Lydia" Jackson smiled down at her
"Hey Dr. Jackson," she said
"You ready to go?" he asked
"Yeah!" Lydia cheered
"Alright, let's go," Jackson said
"Mummy, time to go!" Lydia shouted
"Coming," April said walking down the stairs
Jackson stepped aside and allowed Lydia to run out to his car. April walked up to the door.
"Hey" Jackson greeted
"Hey," April said sighing
"You nervous?" he asked
"A little" she answered
Jackson closed the door as they both left. They got into the car and headed for the park.
A while later they arrived at the park. Once they entered, Lydia dashed across the grass, heading towards the swing set, ignoring her mother's pleading to slow down. The next two hours were spent playing on the playground and eating ice cream and slushies.
April and Jackson were now sitting on a bench, looking at Lydia run around. There was a happy mood between them, and April thought now would be the time to break the news.
"Now?" she asked
Jackson took a deep breath "Now"
April stood up.
"Lydia, can you come over here please?" she called out to her daughter
Lydia ignored and continued running around with the other kids.
"Lydia!!" April called out again
Lydia was too excited to pay attention to her mother, so she continued running.
"I think has too much sugar in her system" Jackson commented getting a smile from April
Lydia ran up to the monkey bars and stared up at it. She never went on it before because she was scared, but the sugar high had feeling like she could do anything at the moment. She began climbing up the ladder.
"Lydia get down from there!" April instructed pointing her fingers at her
"I better go get her, before she hurts herself," Jackson said getting up from the bench.
Jackson walked over to the monkey bars and snatched Lydia off the bars. Lydia kicked and giggled as Jackson held her under his arms, bringing her over to the bench.
"Here we go," Jackson said placing her down on the bench sitting next to her
"That was fun, let's do it again" Lydia grinned
"No not now sweetie, we need to talk to you about something," April said
Jackson took a seat beside Lydia, she was now sitting in between them.
"What do we have to talk about?" Lydia asked bouncing herself up and down the bench, swinging her feet
April grabbed Lydia's shoulders "First of, stay still," she said
Lydia stopped bouncing but continued to swing her feet.
"Ok..." she said looking up at Jackson them back to Lydia "I know you've been wanting to know more about your dad and you've been wanting to meet him..." April began, recalling the many times Lydia brought up the dad topic after her fourth birthday party
"Is he here?" Lydia asked as her eyes widened
"Um...yes he is" April replied
"Where?!" Lydia asked jumping off the bench looking around the park for someone who would catch her attention
"Right here" Jackson answered
Lydia quickly turned and faced Jackson. Her eyebrows frowned as she looked between April and Jackson. She was somewhat confused and needed someone to confirm what she was thinking. Her eyes finally ended up on April. She looked at her mother, longing for a direct answer.
"Sweetie...Jackson is your dad" she slowly said
Lydia looked back at Jackson as the two stared back at her, waiting for her reaction.
Suddenly the confused look on her face changed into a huge smile. She jumped up on Jackson's lap, draping her tiny hands around his neck, hugging him tightly. Her little mind couldn't believe it. This whole time Dr. Jackson was her dad.
Jackson and April let go of the breath they were holding in. Jackson hugged her back tightly. April sat there and tried her best to hold back the tears that were on the verge of appearing. Lydia loosened her grip on Jackson's neck and looked at him.
"So since you're my daddy" Lydia began then looked over at her mother "And you're my mummy, that means that you have to get married," she said with a grin
The two tensed up, not expecting a question like this from her.
"Um, that's a topic to be discussed later," Jackson said
Lydia shrugged it off, but that wouldn't be the last time they heard of that question though.
"We have to go celebrate!" Lydia squealed
"That's a good idea," Jackson said
"Alright, let's go then," April said
They got off the bench and grabbed their things. Jackson had Lydia in his arms, she wasn't about to walk when she had her dad to carry her. They began walking down the path to the exit.
"So where should we go?" he asked
"To the ice cream cart" Lydia suggested her now new favorite place at the park
"No, no more ice cream for you," April said
"But I like ice cream" Lydia whined
"No," April said again
"Pleeeeeeease?" Lydia pleaded using her pouty face
"No," April said
She looked up at Jackson, giving him the same face. He was her dad, she had to practice working her magic on him too. And of course, he couldn't help but fall for it.
"We could get just one" Jackson suggested
"No, no, no," April said wiggling her fingers at Lydia "You can't use that face on him"
Lydia frowned.
"And Jackson, you can't fall for the pouty face," she told him
"Why not?" he asked
"Cause she'll use it to get whatever she wants from you," April said
"But it's so cute," Jackson said looking down at Lydia
"You know what, I'll need Callie and Arizona to teach you the levels of the pouty face"
"Wait, there are levels to this?" Jackson asked
"There's a lot to learn Jackson, a lot" she replied with a smile, patting his shoulder
"Can we go get pizza then?" Lydia asked
She was going to ask for them to go get candy, but she thought that would be pushing it.
"Pizza is ok" April smiled
Lydia looked up at Jackson.
"Since you're my daddy now, can I call you Dr. Daddy?" she asked with a smile
"Sure" he smiled back "You can call me Dr. Daddy"
