Chapter 3 - The Meaning of Identity

Identity.

How do I start on the beautiful thing that is identity? 

Well I can sum it up in one word.

You.

But that would be a very boring chapter.

...

I'll let Lottie explain it.

"Ok so, now role call is done I would like to talk to you all about something."

The whole class starting whispering to each other.

"Are we in trouble already?"

"What's going on?"

"I think it's about something called I-den-tut-ty?"

After the class went quiet again Lottie began speaking again.

"That something is called Identity." Lottie says as she writes it on the white board.

"Ooooh.." Half the class said with a little bit of understanding.

"Does anyone know what identity means?"

Indy raised her hand.

"Indy." 

"It means who your are." Indy said with confidence.

"Yes, that would be a quick way to summarise identity. Anyone else?" 

Two students raised their hands while the others were on the ground or on their knees.

"Winton."

"Your traits."

"Yes that is a part of identity."

"Bluey."

"Gender." Bluey said with pride.

"Oh yes, that is a big part of identity."

"You guys are so good at this! But you can be better, that's why we are going to focus on identity for the whole year!" Lottie said with joy and confidence.

"Ok so, the main parts of identity is sexuality, gender-" 

Half the class looks at Bluey, Y/n saw that Bluey was being embarrassed so Y/n just looked at them with a confused look which (weirdly) seemed to work. Bluey mouthed thank you, Y/n smiled.

"You looking? As I was saying... sexuality, gender, pronouns, religion and what your favourite cereal is!" Lottie says as she writes these things on the board.

The whole class laughed.

"Nah, I was just kidding about that last one. My favourite is fruit loops." Lottie said jokingly.

The whole class laughed again.

"Identity is a tricky thing, you can be happy with what you are born with or you can be totally different!"

Mackenzie raises his hand.

"Mackenzie."

"Wait what IS sexuality, pronouns and religion." Mackenzie said with confusion.

"They are all very complicated BUT now I will explain sexuality."

"Follow me class, TO THE PRIDE WALL!" Lottie giggled.

The whole class did a giggle.

"So you see all these flags? These all called pride flags. And they all mean different things."

"What's that one?!" Coco said as she pointed out the trans flag.

"That's transgender, it means switching your gender into a different one."Lottie said.

That went on, pointing out every flag and finding out the meaning. Pansexual, bisexual, asexual, gay men's, lesbian and way more.

Identity is beautiful, it's who you are.

And nobody can change who you are except for you.
