34 - The smell of ashes

'What happened?'

'How did this happen?'

Everything was a blur

Maybe because of the smoke everything looked blurry than it should.

I could hear the crackling sound of the fire around the area..

My hands are all dirty, mixed with grime and dried blood..

My eyes desperately searched for people I knew, bodies scattered around the area..

The bridge..wrecked..

Shops...wrecked...

Houses...wrecked...

'Haru...where are you?'

'I'm scared..'

My feet just went on and on until it stopped, 

I gulped the saliva that got stuck on my throat

The scene in front of me nearly took out the air in my lungs.

All my friends are on the ground.

"....What...happened..?" I let out as I hurriedly walked up to them and crouched on the ground, my hands searched for a pulse.

I let out a sigh of relief once I felt it, "They're still alive..thank goodness.." 

"S-sakura-chan.." 

My eyes immediately went over to Suo and held his hand in mine, "Suo-san? I'm here..what happened..?"

"They saw him.."

'What?'

"Saw who?" I asked as I looked at his face, scratches scattered around his cheek, dried blood on the side of his mouth..his pretty face was all messed up.

"...you..remember the rule r-right..? If they see Umemiya-san leave the school grounds..we're done for"

'No..'

'Don't tell me-'

I could feel my heartbeat race as I gripped his hand tighter-

"Sakura-chan..your brother...look for him..he was looking for you" Suo said as he rubbed his thumb against my hand. 

"But what if someone comes here and wrecks you guys even more..?" I said as I looked at our hands.

"Just go look for him..hurry. I'll be fine..go" He even had the energy to smile up at me. How could I believe that if he's smiling so painfully?

"Hold on okay? I'll be back..I promise" I said as I got up on my feet, I saw him smile at me before I made a run for it.

"...Be careful.."

I ran and ran

Worry filled my mind

Where's Haru..

I need to find him

I have to know he's safe..

I'm confused

I don't know what's happening..

Why did Umemiya leave the school grounds?

Did something happen?

What happened for him to decide to leave?

My feet stopped as I saw the scene in front of me..

"Umemiya-san..."

The air around suddenly felt so suffocating..

Umemiya's on the ground.

Why is he on the ground?

He really was out the school premises..

I hurriedly went over to him, his eyes slowly opened as I shook his body gently,

"Why..why are you on the ground.."

His blue eyes stared at me..

I no longer see the light in his eyes.

His eyes look so..dark..

"..You.."

"Me..?" I asked as I tilted my head at him, I'm confused..

"The town is ruined...Himawari.." I looked down, feeling bad for not being able to defend the town..for everyone's sake..

Nothing could prepare me for the next words that left his mouth.

"It's all your fault Himawari"

"What..?"

"It's your fault."

"M-my fault..?"

I watched as he tried to get up, I reached out my hand to help him but he pushed it away.

"Stop."

I just stayed still as I watched him get up on his feet. 

I was afraid to move

His body staggered which made me get up and hold his body but he just pushed me-

I was taken aback, my body fell on the ground before I knew it.

His ocean blue eyes stared down at me, his gaze cold as ice.

"Go away Himawari. I don't have the energy to fight you."

"F-fight..me..?" 

I don't understand..

What do you mean..? 

Why are you looking at me like that..?

"Ume-"

"Stop it.."

"I don't understand please exp-"

"I said stop it!" 

He looked at me as if he was looking at something so despicable. 

What did I do...?

Why is it my fault..

I couldn't say anything else as I saw him turn away from me and began to walk away.

I just watched until he was no longer in my field of view..

At that moment..

..I felt nothing but...

...loneliness.
