Chapter 11: Chaos
22:18, 13 May 2024Hope was now stuck with the rest of the guys, in the front row. She twisted her head trying to see Lanna. She caught a glimpse of her before her head was shoved back facing forwards.
Frypan glanced at her again. "Why didn't you run, Hope?" He whispered as the guard walked back down the line.
She gave him a look of disgust. "I don't leave my family."
Thomas glanced at them, he obviously heard their conversation. He leaned over Minho and whispered, "I'm tired of running."
The door of the berg slid open and a woman stood at the top. She was dressed in a fresh white pressed suit, her hair pulled so tight it looked like it hurt, and her lips a bright blood red. She stood at the top of the ramp surveying the scene below her, like she was the queen of the world. Maybe she was, she was Ava Paige, Chancellor of WICKED.
"Man. You guys are freaken celebrities or something!" Hope muttered.
"What do you mean?" Fry asked, leaning closer to whisper.
Hope gave him a questioning look. "You have Director Janson and Chancellor Paige here. In person! They never leave the safety of their facility. Like, you pissed them off so much, you have no idea the reproductions of what you guys did."
Before Frypan or anyone else could answer the Chancellor strutted down the ramp, and came to stop beside Janson.
"Is this all of them?" She asked, sounding disappointed. Her nose slightly turned up, as she surveyed the lines of kids and teens in front of her.
Janson shrugged, "Most of them. It'll be enough." He waved his long fingered hand, dismissing the thought.
"Start loading them in."
"Yes, ma'am." Janson nodded, a twisted smile on his thin twitching face. He turned towards the captain and the other soldiers, "Okay, you heard her. Let's go!"
"Get 'em on!" The captain cried. He grabbed a kid, and shoved him towards the berg. Ava Paige took a few steps closer to Thomas. Her sharp eyes narrowed in on him. Hope felt a shiver run down her spine. Even from the end of the line, Hope could feel the cold aloofness from her.
"Hello, Thomas. I'm glad you're safe."
From behind her, the dark haired girl Hope had glimpsed around the camp, stood, shifting her weight from foot to foot.
"What the hell?" Minho cried, the anger in his eyes was clear, he looked ready to kill her with his bare hands. Hope looked back and forth between the girl and the line of guys. All of them had a look of hurt, confusion and anger mixed on their faces. She had a feeling she knew exactly what happened. Hope just prayed it wasn't true.
"Teresa?" Frypan asked, the confusion and hurt was clear in his voice.
"Wait, what's going on?" Newt asked, though with the look on his face, he knew exactly what was gong on.
"She's with them." Thomas sat, confirming what Hope had prayed wasn't true. It had been Teresa who somehow contacted WICKED. She was the one who brought this destruction down on all of them, killing a good majority of the innocent Right Arm people. Hoe could feel the anger building in her chest. The tight ball made it hard to breath.
"Since when?" Minho spat at her, with such a look of loathing, Hope could feel it from where she was kneeling. And for once she agreed. Fry just looked so hurt she wanted to hug him.
"You guys seriously had no clue?" Hope whispered to him. He turned to look at her, and shook his head, "No...none." he whispered back, his shoulders slumped and he hung his head. Hope had a hard time believing that, but she didn't say anything. She hardly knew these guys. But it seemed hard to not realize someone was working for WICKED. She looked back to Teresa, she wouldn't look anyone in the eye, she had the decency to at least have that, she kept shifting from foot to foot, and twisting her jacket sleeve.
"Oh...Teresa's had an evolved appreciation of the greater good." Janson grinned, as he placed a hand on her shoulder. Teresa had an embraced look on her face, she was looking between the guys, "Once we gave her her memories, it was only a matter of time."
"Let's go, let's go." someone behind them called, a kid was struggling, he was not going to go without a fight.
"I'm sorry. I had no choice." Teresa finally cried, tears in her big blue eyes, "This is the only way. We have to find a cure."
So she wasn't sorry, not really. Betraying friends, killing innocent lives, ripping families apart, and from what Hope had heard and gathered from others, torturing kids.
"She's right." Chancellor Paige finally said, stepping forwards, placing a hand on Teresa's other shoulder. "This is all just a means to an end." She looked directly at Thomas. "You used to believe that, Thomas."
Thomas blanched, looking absolutely bewildered. His confusion morphed into a look of rage. Ava Paige rushed on before Thomas could say anything. "No what you think of me... I am not a monster. I'm a doctor."
Hope couldn't help it and she snorted in amusement. A doctor, that actually made Hope laugh bitterly. The three of them, Janson, Teresa and Ava looked at her. The other guys all looked at her as well, before Hope said anything more, the guard behind her slammed the but of his gun into the back of her head, making her fall forwards, with a small cry of pain. Frypan helped her up, her head was bleeding now, but there was nothing for her to stop it. Ava looked back to Thomas. She was almost pleading with him to understand.
"I an oath to find a cure! No matter the cost. I just need more time!"
There was a scuffle, and Doctor Mary came shoving through the crowd. "You mean more blood."
Ava's sharp cold eyes flicked up to the doctor. "Hello, Mary. I hoped we'd meet again." Her voice was cold and cutting, looking at Mary with contempt, while Mary looked bake at Ava with disgust. "I'm sad it had to be under these circumstances." Ava said.
"I'm sorry about a lot of things, too. But not this," she indicated to the Right Arm members still on their knees. "I'd do it again. At lest my consciousness is clear."
"So is mine."
There was loud bang that echoed. Janson had pulled a gun and shot Mary. Hope cried out, Mary stumbled backwards. Vince shrugged off the guys holding him, and shoved through, the crowd. He caught her before she crumpled to the ground.
"Mary? Mary? Mary!" He cried, shaking her shoulders. Hope saw her struggling to breath, blood blossomed on her chest, and pooled on the ground. Hope threw her hands to he mouth, stifling a cry. There was scuffles and cries, Frypan threw his arms around Hope, pulling her into a tight hug, like his big bear hug could protect her. Mary had been so kind when they first got here.
"Mary! Mary! No! Mary! Mary, please! No!"
Hope let the tears fall, listening to the anguish in his cries, Hope knew that Mary was dead.
"Come on, Janson. Load them up. Let's go." She indicated at the kids. "All those other people." She waved a hand towards the adults in the back, the other Right Arm members, and the people from Hope's little community of people. "Get rid of them."
"Let's go. Let's go!" Janson cried, his eyes lit up with the command.
"Let go of me!" Thomas yelled.
"Sonya! Aris!"
Soldiers started grabbing kids. The kids they knew were previously with WICKED were being dragged towards the Berg. The new kids ere being tested.
"Get back!" Thomas suddenly cried.
Hope took the opportunity, she ripped herself from Frypan's hug, and twisted around. She scrambled to her feet, and shoved her way to where Lanna was. It was chaos for a minute. Soldiers were yelling. Civilians were screaming, kids were crying and struggling. Hope got to Lanna and pulled her best friend into a tight hug, just as soldiers lunged at the girls ripping them apart. One held Lanna and the other held Hope tight to his chest, his hands like iron clamps around her arms.
"Lanna!" Hope cried, trying to fight the soldier who held her back. The one solider stuck something into Lanna's neck, the same medical device they used on Hope earlier. It beeped.
"Shit, she's not even immune!"
"Get ride of her then. She's useless."
The soldier who held Lanna dragged her away.
"No! Lana!"
"Hope!"
The soldier dragged her to the other Right Arm members and none immunes. The soldier who had Hope started dragging her towards the berg. Fear of what was going to happen to Lanna, they were going to kill everyone who wasn't immune. And she was being dragged towards the berg. Hope struggled and fought, but the man who had her arms was bigger and stronger.
"Everyone, back!" Thomas cried again. "Back!" Hope saw Thomas had pulled out the home made explosive Jorge gave him. He had the explosive in one hand and the detonator in the other. He was waving them around widely, yelling at everyone to back up.
"Hold your fire!" Janson cried. The WICKED soldiers were backing off, not wanting to be blown up. But there was still a large line of them blocking the kids and the Right Arm members.
"Everyone, back!" Thomas screamed, waving the explosive around.
"Hold your fire!" Janson screamed, spit flying from his mouth.
"Back. Let 'em go." Thomas cried, waving the explosive towards every kid who was in the clutches of WICKED.
"Thomas, put it down." Janson tried reasoning, Hope could see the panic in his twisted twitchy face. If the bomb went off, most of the kids would die, so would he and Ava and a good group of WICKED soldiers.
"Let 'em all go!" Thomas cried again, he clearly was terrified, Hope could see it from here, but he was trying.
"You know I can't do that!" Janson said.
"Thomas, stop!" Teresa cried suddenly, pushing in front of Janson, finally saying something. Hope growled. How could she tell Thomas to stop when the two people beside her just gave the order to kill everyone who wasn't an immune kid. "I made a deal with them! They promised we'd be safe. All of us." She finally had tears in her eyes.
"And I'm supposed to believe to you now?" Thomas spat at her.
"She'd just kill us like she's gonna kill everyone behind me! Look at Mary!" Hope screamed, trying to fight the man holding her. Hope had blood and tears running down her face. The solider slammed his hand over her mouth.
"It's true. It was her only condition." Ava said, bringing the attention back to herself. Thomas was breathing heavily, he was skittish and he had his own tears in his eyes. Hope could see the anger in his eyes, but he hesitated for a second before he shook his head.
"Shut up!" He finally cried.
"Everything can go back to the way it was." Teresa tried to convince him.
How it used to be...Teresa had no idea what she was talking about. She clearly had a soft cushy job with WICKED, she just wanted this for herself, clearly she had no clear indication of what exactly life outside of the walls of WICKED was like.
"Thomas..." Ava's voice changed, it took on a slightly softer tone, trying to calm the situation. "Do you want all of them to die?" She indicated to the explosive still held in his hand, and the other kids still clutched in WICKED hands.
"Listen to her, Thomas!" Teresa cried, tears running down her face. "Think about what you're doing."
"We're with you, Thomas." Minho yelled, finally shrugged off the soldier who was holding him. He walked up beside him.
"No!" Teresa screamed. "Don't!"
"Do it, Tommy!" Newt also managed to get over to Thomas.
Frypan also got over to where Thomas was standing, but he glanced over at Hope, with sorrow in his eyes. Hope was still struggling hopelessly against the hands clamped around her.
"We're ready." Frypan said firmly.
"We're not back there!" Thomas cried, branching the explosive again.
"Thomas?" Teresa pleaded.
"It's the only way." He responded.
Hope would actually rather be blown up then go with WICKED. But if she had her way, she would rather blow up WICKED and she could live.
"Thomas!"
Hope looked over the other way trying to find Lanna and Papa Odin in the crowd. She could find them. She could feel the sadness and panic in her chest. There was a wild scream, and the blaring of the horn. Hope's head whipped around. Coming down the hill, was a black jeep. Jorge leaned out the window screaming. He leapt out of the door as the jeep hit some derby from the earlier explosions, the jeep flipped and slammed into the helicopter. It exploded immediately. Sending twisted metal and fire and everything everywhere. There was instant chaos. People started screaming, people were running everywhere. It took Hope a second to realize she had been thrown to the ground by the solider when he threw himself out of the way of the explosion.
She scrambled to her feet. She twisted around, trying to find Lanna and Papa.
"Come on. Come on!" Frypan come charging at her, he grabbed her hand and pulled her with him towards the other guys.
"I need to find Lanna! And Papa!" She cried, trying to pull her hand free.
"They'll be okay! They ran back towards the hill!"
Hope frowned, Papa wouldn't leave her. But Fry pulled her away from the chaos.
"Freeze! Drop it, kid!"
A group of soldiers blocked their path. They had their launchers pointed at them. Before Thomas could be stopped, he chucked the explosive at them, and he pressed the button as he threw himself to the ground, taking Minho and Newt down with him. Frypan pulled Hope. It exploded. Hope threw her hands over her head.
"Run!" Someone screamed.
Hope was pulled back to her feet. She ran after the guys. There was screaming everywhere, fires burnt, smoking filling the air. Blue electricity bullets were whizzing everywhere, real bullets also zipped around. Pain exploded from Hope's leg. She cried out and her leg gave out, she went crashing to the ground. A bullet had ripped across her thigh. She wasn't shot directly, but it was enough to cause incredible pain and a lot of blood.
She looked around wildly. She had no idea where everyone went. Hope tried to get up but she crumpled. A few soldiers emerged from the smoke. She knew she was in trouble. They grabbed her, hefted her up to her feet and started to drag her towards the berg.
"Sir!"
Hope was tossed down onto the ground at someone's feet.
"We found his girl friend!"
Hope picked her head up. Janson stood over her. His shoulder was bloody, his look of pain turned to excitement. Hope was confused, before fear and panic took over. Janson grabbed her by the hair and yanked her up, making Hope cry out in pain. Her bloody hands flew up to try grab his hand. Her bloody leg shook and she had trouble standing on it.
"Well, isn't this a treat."
"I'm not!" Hope gasped.
"Not what sweetheart?" Janson hissed.
"His girlfriend! I'm not his girlfriend!"
Janson just smiled, which looked more like a sneer. He dragged her up the berg ramp. She finally collapsed, she couldn't walk much more. Janson just stood at the top watching the chaos. The last few soldiers were making their way up the ramp. They were dragging an unconscious Minho between them.
Hope could see the others all standing at the top of the hill as the berg rose into the air, the ramp still retracting. Hope could feel the despair in her chest. A fresh sob came forth. Minho was dumped beside her. Janson looked between them.
"Excellent. His best friend and his girls friend." He turned and walked away, holding his bloody shoulder.
The other guards spread out around the cargo hold. The kids they had captured looked forlorn, battered and bruised.
"Hope?"
Hope turned her head, tears falling down her face.
"Tim..?"
Tim's big blue eyes went wide when he took in her bruised and bloody body. Hope was holding her leg, trying to stop the bleeding, with nothing but her hands. The blood just seeped out from under her hands and down her leg onto the berg floor.
"Hope! what happened? All that blood! Were you shot?"
Hope nodded, whimpering in with the pain. She could feel her hands going cold and she was shaking. Tim had crawled over to her, he gently pulled her into his chest, so she could lean on something. Her breathing was becoming shallow. Minho groaned as he stirred . He slowly woke up and sat up.
"Shuck." He scowled s he looked around.
"Hey," Tim patted his arm, "Dude, do you have anything to stop the bleeding?"
"What?" Minho looked around. His eyes went wide, and he cursed.
"Dammit, Hope. How'd you end up here. I thought Fry had you."
"She was shot man!" Tim rolled his eyes. "Not really the time for stories."
Minho took in Hope's appearance, and then gingerly he moved closer. He leaned over and pried her hands away. "Hold her hands back, this ain't gonna be pleasant."
Hope gasped in pain and a sob broke out again and a fresh wave of tears spilt over her lashes as Minho poked around. A few other kids looked around, their big scared eyes staring.
"It's not too deep, and I don't see the bullet. So, looks like it just ripped ya open." Minho tried to reassure her.
"Still hurts!"
"I believe it, Ace." He looked up and around at the guards and around the area. His eyes narrowed. "Hey! You shucken tarator!" He called, his voice was sharp as it rang out around the cargo hold. Teresa slowly looked around at him. "Bring me a damn first aid kit!" Minho demanded.
Teresa flinched, and left the area for a minute but surprisingly she came over, holding a huge first aid kit. She knelt down, and Hope hissed at her, and she tried to move away, making herself gasp again.
"Get away from me!" Hope spat through clenched teeth. "Don't touch me!" Hope ripped the first aid kit from Teresa. "I'll do it myself."
Teresa narrowed her eyes and ground her teeth. Minho took the kit from Hope, and moved so his back was to Teresa, blocking Teresa from view, making her fall back. Tim also glared at her, "You better leave now, before the kids here that you betrayed get their hands on you. You have no friends here."
"You don't understand! I ha-" She tried to explain.
"Shut up, tarator. Leave before his warning becomes a reality." Minho hissed.
She got up and shuffled backwards. She spun on her heel and fled the room. Minho and Tim cleaned her leg and wrapped it best they could while a soldier stood back and watched. Once she was bandaged, the man snatched the first aid kit and left. Minho and Tim shifted to lean against the wall with her, the all sighed in defeat.
Hope had silent tears running down her face.
