Chapter 101
21:36, 7 May 2014Conor’s POV
This is driving me fucking insane. Seeing Lucy just led on our bed helplessly while we all sit around her just waiting for her to wake up. The amount of fucking times I’ve told these shitty resort doctors that Lucy needs to go to hospital is unreal.
“She’s not fucking waking up. You can’t expect us all to sit around here and wait” I raise my voice, keeping my eyes locked on Lucy’s colour-drained face.
As soon as I saw that she didn’t have her helmet on, I slid down the hill after her, knowing that something bad was going to happen. And I was right.
I’ve never felt fear like that as much in my life. I had to check if my fucking girlfriend was alive. That’s fucking traumatising. No one should have to do that. I had to carry her down this steep ass fucking hill to get to the ‘emergency room’ but I wish I’d have just fucking drove to the hospital around here. These doctors are doing jack shit.
They checked her heartbeat and a load of other shit and told me that she’s just passed out but will wake up in a couple of hours. Will she fuck.
I can’t bare to sit here and wait for Lucy to wake up. It’s impossible. I’m shaking uncontrollably and I’m mad at everyone in the room for not realising that she needs to be taken to A&E. Fuck, she fainted at her house once and I nearly rang 999. She’s now rolled down a ski hill and all we’re doing is waiting for her to wake up. This is bullshit.
“Conor, calm down” Adam, Lucy’s Dad, mumbles.
“How the fuck do you expect me to calm down? You didn’t see her falling down that hill! You didn’t have to check if she was fucking alive” I shout. I understand how rude I sound but this is Lucy’s life I’m calling for. He nods at me, signalling that he understands me.
“He has a point. Are you sure we shouldn’t just go to the hospital?” Adam frowns. Finally, someone’s seeing sense.
“Sir, we’ve already told you. Your daughter only passed out as she was falling down the hill. The only thing she’ll be suffering from is scratches and bruises. She must’ve passed out in shock” the doctor explains to us.
“Bullshit” I spit, receiving a glare from the so called ‘doctor’.
Adam just sighs and puts his head back in his hands. It’s painful looking around the room and seeing everyone sat in a circle around the bed Lucy’s laying on in agony, just waiting for her to wake up. I’m fucking ripping my hair out.
I look over at Eleanor who’s crying on Matt’s – her Dad’s – shoulder, as he rubs her back slightly to comfort her while muttering a few supportive things to her. She looks up at me and I just glare back at her. She can’t expect a smile when I’m in this state. I barely like her anyway for the way she treated Lucy. If it wasn’t for her and Jack fucking up, Lucy probably wouldn’t have even gone up that ski lift. I refuse to blame myself for this.
I look over at Jack and see him sat on the edge of his seat, biting his nail and blinking back a tear that’s just about to fall. He fails and I watch as it just rolls down his cheek but he quickly wipes it away.
Adam’s head’s in his hands and I can hear his harsh breaths inhaling and exhaling every few seconds.
The two male doctors are just sat on a chair next to the sofa, impatiently waiting for Lucy to wake up.
“She needs to go to the hospital” I announce for about the seventh time tonight. We can’t sit here and just wait for a miracle to wake her up. She needs special fucking treatment before it’s too late. I’ve seen this shit happen before.
One of the doctors just sighs and gives me another glare before resting his chin on his hand and looking at Lucy in boredom. Fucking asshole.
I look down at mine and Lucy’s linked hands and let a tear roll down my cheek. It physically hurts seeing her slumped on the bed, skin pale white and probably in so much pain. Her hand is numb so I start rubbing my thumb up and down it. Her whole body is numb which explains all the duvets in the house piled up on her.
Please wake up, Lucy.
The relief of hearing her breathing when I picked her up from the hill was unreal. I don’t know what I would’ve done if she wasn’t breathing. Let’s not even get into that.
I close my eyes and rest my head in my arms on the edge of the bed just wishing and praying for Lucy to wake up.
Come on baby.
I impatiently snap my head up and look at the doctor.
“How long is this going to take?” I huff.
“It’s usually around two or three hours. If not, we’ll have to take her to hospital” one of them explains.
“So there’s a chance that she won’t wake up?” I panic.
“She’s definitely going to wake up but we can’t expect her to stay here all night. She’s been unconscious for an hour and fifteen minutes now,” he checks his watch “so if she’s not awake in another hour and a bit, we’ll take her to hospital so they can look after her rather than you”
“I want to look after her. Why would we want the hospital to?” I snap.
“You’ve been complaining about her not being in hospital since you brought her to us. We’ll put her in hospital so you’re more relaxed” he sighs.
“How can I re-“
“Conor” Adam interrupts me. “Look, I understand that this is stressful but snapping at the doctor isn’t helping. They’ve told us the problem so we just have to wait. Just try and relax and rather than going mad at the doctors, talk to Lucy or something”
“I can’t fucking relax” I mutter and he just sighs in agreement. I know that he knows I’m right but he feels uncomfortable with me snapping at the doctors.
“Right, we’re going to the hospital. I can’t wait for my daughter to wake up from this” he stands up from his seat making everyone’s heads snap up at him.
“Finally” I stand up from my seat and unlink my hand from Lucy’s so I can pick her up.
I scoop my hands under her and just when I’m about to pick her up, her eyes start to flutter open and she lets out a small moan.
“Wait” I snap my head towards everyone then back to Lucy. “Lucy?” my lips start to form a small smile as her brown eyes become wider and her mouth parts.
“Oh my god” Adam gasps, running over to the other side of the bed. “Lucy, can you hear me?” he asks her, linking his hand with hers.
She lets out a sigh and frowns slightly, looking around the room at everyone’s panicked faces.
“Um, y-yeah” she croaks.
“Lucy!” I smile widely, wrapping my arms around her shoulders in joy.
“Ouch” she mutters, laughing slightly.
“Shit” I panic and pull away from her. Adam starts to laugh slightly and smiles widely at his daughter.
“Are you okay?” he asks her.
“My body hurts” she huffs, unlinking hands with me so she can rub her hip slightly. I replace her hand with mine and she turns to look at me, smiling slightly before looking back at her Dad.
“Hi, Lucy. You’ve basically just passed out as you were snowboarding down the hill but there’s absolutely nothing to worry about. You might suffer from body pains and you will have a few bruises over your body from the fall but just take some pain relief tablets if it gets sore. If there’s anything unusual about your body or you’re still suffering from pain in three weeks, go and see a doctor about it but just try and relax for now so your healing process will be quicker” the shitty doctor explains, smiling at Lucy.
“Okay, thank you so much” Lucy returns the smile. She looks so weak and lifeless.
“It’s not a problem. If there’s anything you’re worrying about, feel free to come to the medical office in the resort and we’ll be happy to help you” he nods at her.
“Thank you” she smiles again but I can tell she just wants them to go away.
“I hope you’re okay. Bye now” he smiles, walking out of the room with his ‘assistant’ or whatever. Adam and Matt say a quick ‘bye’ to them to be polite, before returning their full attention back to Lucy. Everyone’s now crowded around at her bedside and are all staring at her like some sort of zoo animal.
“Lucy, why did you snowboard without your helmet?” Adam asks politely. Lucy awkwardly switches looks between Jack and Eleanor and lets out a sigh.
“I don’t know, I forgot it” she shrugs and I frown slightly. Eleanor and Jack look panicked, obviously not wanting Lucy to tell us all what they started.
“Why did you even go snowboarding so late?” he chuckles and she looks back and forth between them both again.
“I don’t know. I just felt like it” she answers, still looking between them both, then returning back to her Dad’s gaze. Why the fuck isn’t she telling him about what shit they did?
“I should’ve stopped you from going out there as soon as you told me. I’m so sorry” Adam mumbles and Lucy’s face drops.
“Dad, don’t blame yourself for this. It was my fault. I was being stupid” Lucy smiles reassuringly at her Dad.
“Rule number one, always wear your helmet” Matt chimes in, reminding her of the rules we set on the plane here. I laugh dryly and so does Lucy and Adam.
“I know, it was stupid of me but hey, I’m alive” she shrugs, smirking slightly. There’s that attitude I love. “What time is it anyway?” Lucy frowns, resting her hand on top of mine. I smile slightly at the small gesture.
“It’s almost two in the morning” Adam chuckles.
“Oh my god” she gasps. “It’s really late, I don’t mind if you all go to bed”
“Lucy, you’ve just woken up” he smiles but frowns slightly.
“I know but I feel bad keeping you all up. I’m fine now, honestly” she assures us all and her Dad looks around at us all, as if he wants confirmation. I just shrug when his eyes reach me.
“Are you going to look after her?” he raises his eyebrow at me.
“Of course I will” I assure him, nodding confidently.
“Okay, we’ll talk in the morning” her Dad smiles at her, leaning over her to kiss her forehead. “Love you”
“Love you too” she smiles widely as he gets out of his chair.
“Night Lucy, hope you’re okay” Matt smiles.
“Night Lucy, love you” Eleanor smiles awkwardly at Lucy and she just nods.
“Um, see you in the morning. Night” Jack does the same smile as Eleanor and debates whether to go up to Lucy or just walk out of the door. After seeing the look Lucy gives him, he chooses to walk out of the door, shutting it behind him.
I jump straight into the other side of the bed and wrap my arms around Lucy.
“I was so worried about you” I mumble into the crook of her neck. She giggles slightly and wraps her arms around my waist. “I’m so so sorry” I plead.
“It’s fine, Conor. Thank you for saving my life” she laughs dryly and I pull away and hold her shoulders.
“I didn’t save your life” I frown. I hate putting it like that. Like, if I wasn’t there, what would have happened to her?
“You kind of did” she frowns in confusion. “And I can’t thank you enough”
“Well it was a pleasure. I’ll save your life until the day I die” I smirk making her laugh brightly. The colour’s definitely coming back to her face and I can feel her heating up again. Probably because of the amount of duvet’s piled on her.
“Cringey fucker” she cusses and I start laughing.
“Are you hot?” I ask when my laugh dies down.
“Boiling” she huffs so I take all the duvets off her except one. The rest of the house have probably got the spare duvets in their wardrobes so I don’t bother going round the house giving out all their duvets. “Nicely done” she refers to me throwing all the duvets across the room.
“You know me” I wink.
“Conor, I’m really sorry for everything I said up there” she lowers her head slightly and picks at her nails.
“I couldn’t give two shits about that, Luce. You being alright is all that matters to me” I assure her making her smile slightly.
“I love you” she smirks.
“I love you too” I wink, getting out of bed to get changed. I’m still in all my snowboarding shit.
Lucy’s POV
I watch Conor as he takes off all his clothes except his boxers. I can’t even begin to explain how thankful I am for what he did. If he didn’t follow me up that hill, I could have died. Conor saved my life...
“Stop staring” he smirks, pulling me out of my trance.
I tut, “It’s nothing I haven’t seen before”
He starts laughing before slipping a top over his head, and pulling up some loose shorts. He’d usually sleep in just his boxers but it’s fucking freezing in this country during the winter. The radiators make no difference.
“How you feeling?” Conor asks as he gets into bed.
“My body hurts and I have a small headache but I’m fine” I shrug. You’d think that falling down a hill that steep would have a serious impact on me but I’m honestly fine. I just feel like I’ve slept in a weird position although I dread to see the bruises on my body tomorrow. If I fell into a tree or a rock or something though, I’d probably be in hospital right now, still unconscious. “I’m still pissed at Eleanor and Jack” I mutter.
“I’m not surprised” he sighs.
“What did they do when they found out I fell?” I ask out of curiosity.
“Well Eleanor was crying her eyes out and Jack just didn’t say a word. He was crying a bit” he explains. So now they care. “They’ll be sucking up to you tomorrow”
“I can’t be bothered” I sigh. I don’t want to talk about this anymore...
“Well while we were outside yesterday, we came up with a team name” he smirks, knowing that I wanted him to change the subject. “Not that we can use it now”
“Well what was it?” I chuckle.
“Cunning stunts” he nods and I frown in confusion. “Get it? I came up with it”
“I can tell” I mumble.
“So it’s like, stunning cunts but we’re doing stunts so it’s cunning stunts” he smiles widely. Oh god. I start laughing at this awful but brilliant name.
“I like it” I smile. “Why can’t we use it?”
“We can’t do the competition now, Lucy” he frowns. If me passing out down a hill is stopping us from doing this competition, I’m going to scream.
“Yes we can” I snap.
“No we can’t. The doctor’s said relax anyway”
“Like you’d listen to them anyway” I roll my eyes. “Look, I only passed out. I’m perfectly fine now. We’re doing this competition”
“No, Lucy. I don’t want you risking your life up there” he shakes his head and I moan.
“We’ve worked so hard on it and you’re just giving up?”
“I’m not giving up, I’d just rather you be safe”
“But we’re all at risk doing this competition. Me falling down a hill doesn’t make anything any worse. I don’t want to let you all down like that when we’ve been looking forward to it” I raise my voice slightly.
“Lucy, we’re not doing it. End of” he huffs, lying down on the pillow.
“Yes we are. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for us, Conor. There’s no way we’re giving it up” I explain. I’m angry that he’s just giving up so easily when we’ve worked so hard on this and have got so excited about it. “I’m sure you want to show off your stunt just as much as I want to. And I’m pretty sure you want to win that five hundred pounds too”
He smirks slightly, “But you’re not going to be safe out there”
“Either are you” I shrug. “Just risk it”
“I don’t know, Luce. Your Dad’s not going to let you either”
I moan, “He’s the least of my worries. I’ll either do it on my own or you can do it with me”
“You actually need a team of four to compete, so without us, you can’t do it” he smirks.
“Looks like you’re doing it with me then” I smile. I am doing this competition no matter what. I don’t give a fuck about what’s happened and what the doctor’s told me.
“Are you sure you want to do this?” he frowns.
“One thousand percent” I nod confidently. There’s not one part of me telling me that I shouldn’t do this competition.
“Ok, we’ll have to talk to your Dad though” he says hesitantly.
“Yeah, whatever” I shrug.
“Now you need sleep” he demands.
“Yes Dad” I roll my eyes and he pulls a face at the name I just called him.
“Don’t say that again” he cringes and I start laughing.
“Night” I smile.
“Night” he sighs, wriggling about in the bed for a bit before wrapping his arm securely around my waist.
