𝐁𝐎𝐖𝐋 𝐎𝐅 𝐅𝐄𝐄𝐋𝐈𝐍𝐆𝐒

the school day had just ended, and chaos lingered in the air like leftover chalk dust. coincidentally, all students went out first, leaving only the chaos crew, the girls, naruto and ameiko.

“alright!” naruto suddenly yelled, slamming his hands against the classroom door like he was declaring war. “i’ve had enough!!”

everyone froze mid-pack-up.

choji almost dropped his onigiri. kiba’s eyebrows went up. “already? i thought lunch was when you had enough.”

naruto ignored him, scanning the hallway dramatically. eyes blazing, hair defying gravity more than usual.

then he spotted her.

𝐀𝐌𝐄𝐈𝐊𝐎 𝐊𝐎𝐂𝐇𝐎, standing by the shoe cubbies, adjusting the soft folds of her lavender-to-white haori. calm, serene, untouchable.

noticing his intense glares, she looked at him and tilted her head slightly. “yes, naruto-kun?” voice soft as ever.

“y-you!!” he shouted, pointing at her like she stole the hokage’s wallet. “RAMEN DUEL. YOU AND ME. NOW!!”

the silence was instant and deafening.

          “…what,” said Sakura.

          “…what,” said Ino.

“…what,” said shikamaru, with a lot more pain in his voice.

ameiko blinked once. twice. a butterfly clip shimmered faintly in her hair as she smiled, dreamy as ever.

“is this... a confession?” she asked softly, but there's a hint of amusement in her eyes.

naruto exploded into red. “what—no! —WHY WOULD—NO—STOP SMILING LIKE THAT!!”

behind him, the entire chaos crew was frozen in disbelief.

shikamaru, still holding his half-packed scrolls, muttered, “i was supposed to go home and nap…”

choji whispered, “wait. did naruto just ask her on a food date?”

kiba grinned, snickering, “bro. she's gonna destroy him.”

shino pushed his glasses up. “he has no strategy.”

just a little farther away stood hinata, who softly said “oh…”

sasuke, who had just stepped into the hallway, stopped. blinked. turned around. but didn’t leave.

ino, whispering to sakura. “you think she’ll go?”

sakura, arms crossed. “i don't know and— argh! she always smiles. but this time—agh. that smile means something.”

naruto didn't wait for her response and walks away stomping. while ameiko stepped forward slowly, folding her sleeves in front of her like a shrine maiden about to accept divine judgment.

and the rest, followed like a bees.

teuchi blinked as a mini-army of twelve-year-olds swarmed his shop like a genin field trip gone rogue.

“a duel, you say?” he asked.

naruto slapped down a fistful of coins. “very spicy! five bowls each! this is a legendary battle!”

ameiko sat beside him like a cloud on a breeze. “how poetic,” she murmured. “to duel with heat, not steel.”

naruto nearly choked on air. “wha—y-you’re not gonna win with metaphors!!”

the others crammed into the back table.

kiba leaned in. “ten yen says she makes him cry by bowl two.” shikamaru, arms crossed. “twenty says she finishes without breaking a sweat.” shino nodded. “i’d put money on her smile alone.” while choji ordered his food too.

sasuke stood silently at the edge of the doorway, leaning against the frame like he didn’t care at all. but he had the clearest line of sight to ameiko’s profile. he said nothing. he blinked once.

ino, elbowing sakura, “who's your bet?”

sakura, flatly said, “ i bet she’ll cry because of spiciness.”

hinata, on the other hand, clutching her jacket: “…is this how you ask someone to dinner?” she whispered to herself.

then the duel begins.

the first bowls arrived. steam. spice. doom.

naruto dug in, chopsticks a blur. “easy!! this is nothing!! i do this in my sleep!!” ameiko picked up her chopsticks daintily. she twirled the noodles like it was a tea ceremony. then took one slow bite.

a pause, then “mm. it reminds me of summer lightning.”

“what does even mean?!”

everyone was watching now.

          kiba was crying laughing.

choji was nervously eating the food he brought in the shop.

          shikamaru facepalmed.

shino was noting the duel as though it were a scientific field study.

hinata was fully pink, eyes never leaving both figures.

sakura was glaring at both of them.

ino whispered, “she’s so graceful it’s almost annoying.”

sasuke blinked again. still leaning. still watching.

by bowl three, naruto was sweating.

by bowl five, he was crying.

          “i-it’s f-fine,” he gasped. “i’m fine. i l-love ramen—!”

ameiko was just finishing her fifth bowl, cheeks still faintly pink, her sleeves folded neatly, eyes calm. “you’re brave,” she said softly. “loud, but brave.”

naruto drooped, lips red and parting. “that… sounds like an insult.”

she leaned closer. “mm. a compliment, perhaps. depending on how you chew it.”

he stared and passed out. face-first into the counter. naruto was slumped face-down on the ramen counter, arms dangling, soul clearly departed. steam drifted from his half-finished fifth bowl like incense for the fallen.

ameiko sat beside him, calm as ever, sleeves folded, not a single drop of broth on her. she placed her empty bowl down gently, then reached into her sleeve.

with soft fingers, she left a neat stack of coins beside naruto's bowl, glinting silver under the shop’s paper lanterns.

then she rose. gracefully. like she hadn’t just outlasted a ramen storm. her white-to-lavender haori shimmered faintly as she turned toward the back table — where every single one of her classmates sat frozen.

the air tensed.

kiba had been mid-laugh and now looked like he’d forgotten how to breathe, even akamaru froze.

choji clutched his onigiri like a shield.shikamaru stiffened in his seat, eyes already calculating escape routes.

          shino’s glasses fogged slightly.

          ino sat bolt upright.

sakura blinked hard and crossed her arms like armor.

hinata had both hands clutched to her chest, too red to speak.

and sasuke, near the door, quiet as ever, didn’t flinch. but his eyes had never left ameiko.

she smiled.

soft. serene. mysterious as dusk.

“mm,” she hummed, gaze drifting across the room. “i didn’t expect such an audience.”

“w-we weren’t watching!” kiba barked too quickly.

“i was eating too!” choji said.

“you were narrating,” shikamaru muttered. “you didn’t even blink…” shino added, shifting his weight.

ameiko turned her eyes to him, gentle as falling petals. “neither did you.”

he said nothing. just looked away.

she then turned next to ino and sakura. “you both seemed… curious.”

“i was not curious,” sakura said immediately, eyes sharp. “i just didn’t think you could out-eat naruto.”

“yeah,” ino added, defensive. “i was betting on naruto. that’s all.”

ameiko smiled. “oh? i see. then… apologies for the loss.”

they both froze.

then, she turned to hinata and her voice softened. “you stayed quiet,” she said. “that’s rare in this group.” hinata’s mouth opened, but no words came. just a high, panicked noise like a kettle about to whistle. everyone just stares at the both of them.

ameiko gave her a graceful nod, then looked at all of them together. her gaze wasn’t smug. just… floating. delicate. like she saw through everyone without needing to say it aloud.

“you all looked like you were expecting something to go wrong,” she said, still smiling. “or hoping i’d lose control.”

“i wasn’t—!”“we didn’t mean—!”“no, not hoping—”“it was just unexpected!!”“why do you talk like that?!”

“no need to explain,” she said softly. “i’m simply glad the food was good enough to make you forget yourselves.”

there was a long, heavy silence.

then she looked back toward the counter, at naruto’s face buried in ramen. “thank you for the meal, naruto-kun,” she added. “it was... warm.” but naruto remained unconscious.

she turned.took one step.then paused.

and with the softest voice, clear enough for them all to hear. she said over her shoulder, “…next time, if you’re not too scared of spice… we could all eat together.”

she didn’t wait for an answer.she left the shop with the flutter of silk sleeves.

and behind her was eight twelve-year-olds forgot how to function.

“eat together? so basically a date?”“was that an invitation?!”“wait—did she mean all of us or me—”“i love spice!”“SHE LOOKED AT ME WHEN SHE SAID IT!”“shut up, kiba!”“so who's going to carry naruto?”

the curtain behind her fell shut, muffling the storm of laughter from inside Ichiraku. but 𝐀𝐌𝐄𝐈𝐊𝐎 𝐊𝐎𝐂𝐇𝐎 walked into quiet.

the breeze tugged softly at the ends of her haori. The world outside the shop was dim, peaceful, and cool. a contrast to the feverish noise she’d just left. she adjusted her sleeves with practiced grace.

and then paused.because someone hadn’t left.

just beyond the edge of lantern light, leaned against the wooden beam like part of the scenery, arms crossed and face unreadable, was 𝐒𝐀𝐒𝐔𝐊𝐄 𝐔𝐂𝐇𝐈𝐇𝐀.

he hadn’t followed.but he also hadn’t turned away.

ameiko slowed. she didn’t speak immediately, not out of shyness, but something more deliberate. like a painter choosing the exact moment to lift her brush. then, gently, without looking at him—she says, voice soft as wind chimes “ you stayed longer than i thought you would.”

sasuke didn’t respond at first. the silence between them stretched. then, coolly, “…i wasn’t interested in the noise.”

ameiko’s lips curled, soft and faint smile that didn’t press, didn’t reach for anything.  “no,” she murmured. “but you listened anyway.”

that earned a glance from him, sharp and brief. she tilted her head slightly toward him, her voice as calm as breath over still water,  “did you find what you were listening for?”

sasuke’s eyes narrowed, but he didn’t answer.  ameiko continued, “hmm.” she folded her arms lightly, her sleeves whispering. “perhaps you were only waiting for quiet.”

“or,” she added, just barely teasing, “you were waiting for someone.” now his gaze settled on her fully. still unreadable. but heavier. “…don’t flatter yourself.”

“i don’t,” she said softly. “but i’m allowed to wonder, aren’t i?” she stepped ahead then a few quiet paces, the soft clack of sandals against stone before pausing near the edge of the path.

the lantern glow touched only the edge of her face now. and then, with her back still to him, she spoke again, voice low, not playful now, but… thoughtful, “you didn’t stay because of the food. and not because of the challenge.”

“so if you find yourself lingering again…” she turned her head slightly, just enough for her profile to catch the light.“…you’re welcome to sit next time. no one would question it but you.”

no warmth.

no affection.

just a note, quiet and honest like a message written in passing on a blank page.

she left him with that.

and kept walking. her silhouette faded into the pale night mist, her pace never faltering.

sasuke stood still in the dark, arms still crossed.

but something in his chest—

quietly shifted. deeper.

not toward her.but because of her.
