Chapter 4

19:36, 4 January 2023

Walking back to the farm, you glance at Lex. Hands in his pockets, he looks ahead down the stretch of road.

"You know I can just run us back right." Lex shook his head.

"We can't risk anyone knowing your secre..." He trailed off when he saw the little smile on your lips.

"What?" You shake your head with a giggle.

"It's nothing. I guess I expected you to be a different person. Having amnesia and all. But you're still the same. You're still pretty protective."

Lex hardly recognized himself either.

How many months had he spent trying to figure out the big kent secret. Now that he knew, it didn't feel the way he thought it would. There was no grand celebration like his brain imagined. Watching you so vulnerable, it did something to him. You could have just continued to lie to him. He wouldn't have known. But you trusted him with your secret not just once, but twice.

You trusted him.

Deep down that's all that he wanted. Someone to show him that he was a man worth trusting. It dawns on him now that he isn't the only one that has knowledge of your secret.

"Morgan Edge!" Lex yells, halting.

"If he came after you once then he'll try again. We need to get you back to LuthorCorp. We have to-"

"He's dead."

The remorse is prominent in your tone. You're looking down at your feet.

"It's weird. A part of me thought that news would be a relief. He's threatened everyone I've ever cared about for as long as I could remember. So him dying should be for the best but I..I.." The thought of watching someone die, regardless of their crimes, sat heavy on your heart.

"I had to choose, you or him. I know I made the right choice. I just wish.."

"That the guilt would disappear." Lex finished. You look up.

Lex has known a certain farm boy long enough to read all of his emotions. No matter the universe or reality, a kent was always a kent.

"I'm sorry I put you in that position. I have a feeling that you tried to talk me out of it." You rub your arm with a sad smile.

"I did my best. I didn't blame you. It was kind of sweet. You've always looked out for me Lex. Memories or not, I know deep down that won't ever change. That's just the kind of person you are."

He still barely believes this. But he likes the faith you hold in him.

There's a reflection of Clark. Because he'd always thought he was better than the Luthor name everyone associated him with.

"On a scale of one to ten, how mad do you think my dad is going to be?"

"Twenty."

"Lex!"

He just smiles at you playfully, nudging your arm.

"I'm sure Mr. Kent will get over it."

"I sure hope so." You sulk, and Lex rubs your shoulder.

"Next time maybe don't run us twelve miles out of town." Lex snarks.

You just scoff.

"I'll try to remember that smart guy."

This was the friendship he'd always long for.

Maybe this time around he could do it the right way.
