"Are you okay?" Emily sighed as she gently caressed Newt's face.
He winced slightly and clutched his side in pain.
Carefully, Emily moved over to get a better look at whatever wound was causing him so much discomfort.
"Oh my shucking-" Emily hissed.
There was a gash in Newt's side, and although it didn't seem deep enough to be fatal, he was still bleeding quite profusely.
Newt's weak palm was not enough to keep pressure on the gash, neither was it big enough to cover the whole wound.
Without hesitation, Emily ripped off a large piece of the bottom of her shirt and pressed it against his wound.
The red liquid slowly creeped up the fabric, turning the entire cloth blood red.
Newt's eyes fluttered open for a brief moment before he closed them back again.
"Its okay, you'll be okay..." Emily cooed as she kept pressure on his wound.
After awhile, the bleeding stopped - much to Emily's relief.
Thankfully, the both of them had their runner's backpacks with them.
Reaching in, Emily fished around and her fingers wrapped around the plastic bottle, pulling it out.
Gently, she hoisted Newt up so he was in a sitting position and gently shook him.
Pouring some water into the plastic cap, she wet Newt's lips in hopes that it would make him feel a little better.
Newt opened his crusty eyes and blinked at Emily as his eyes re-focused.
He reached out and took the bottle from Emily, chugging down half of it, then returning it back to Emily.
"Thanks" He breathed, giving Emily a small smile.
Some of her earlier fears had now subsided to an uneasy feeling in the pit of her stomach which she ignored.
Newt was conscious - he was okay.
That's all that mattered.
Taking a seat beside Newt, she leaned her head against the cave wall behind her, puffing out air.
"What do we do Newt..." She sighed, feeling more depressed than she'd ever felt.
"Hey...we'll be okay. They'll find a way" Newt comforted her, but his voice was weak and it did nothing in helping her regain hope.
He reached over and took her hand, bringing it to his lips, he gently kissed the back of her hand - sending a wave of electricity through her arm.
"You really think so?"
Emily looked over at Newt, who looked terribly bruised.
"I'm confident. Besides, being stuck here isn't that miserable. I have you. We finally have privacy..." Newt said, smirking at the last bit.
"You idiot." Emily laughed, feeling some happiness bubble in her.
"We're stuck here and could be stuck here for a long time and that's what you think about?" She shook her head, throwing Newt a look of disbelief.
"What? You don't wanna kiss me? " Newt teased.
"Uh huh, I'm sure it's best to kiss when we're both sticky and gross and -"
Before Emily could finish her sentence, Newt had already shut her up with a kiss.
It was sweet and innocent, just full of love.
She smiled against his lips, and mindlessly threw her arms around his shoulders.
Pulling apart, he smiled down at her.
"You were saying?" He raised an eyebrow, a small smirk playing on the edge of his lips.
"Oh shut up!" Emily grumbled, folding her arms across her chest.
"You know you - ahhh" Newt winced and clutched his side again.
Emily immediately turned her attention to his wound.
"Won't it get infected?" She asked nervously, chewing on her bottom lip.
"Probably.... let's hope the medjacks have something for this..." Newt trailed off.
The pain came in sharp waves, leaving behind a sore and itchy feeling.
Emily sighed, and eventually pulled her eyes away from his jarring wound and turned her attention back to Newt.
"I wonder what normal people would do in this situation..." Emily shook her head, thoughts of life outside the Glade filling her thoughts once more.
As time passed, the both of them grew weary and eventually, they dosed off.
When they woke up, disappointed started to well up in the pits of their stomachs.
The other Runners had yet to find them and they were worried that the Grievers might have injured them badly - or even possible killed them.
Emily stood up and kicked a stone angrily towards the wall.
It clicked and clacked against the cave walls about five times, before coming to stop on the ground again.
Once more, she'd kick it.
Click
Clack
Clack
"That's odd..." Emily thought to herself as she approached the area where she last heard the stone bounce from the wall.
Squinting, she tried to get a better look but it was extremely dim.
She quickly grabbed a torch from the backpack and shone it around, and something caught her attention.
It was a an opening - almost like a door of some sort.
She kicked it gently with her foot and it swung inwards a little.
Using the whole weight of her body, she rammed against the door and it swung wide open, revealing a tunnel.
"What is that?" Newt asked in shock and utter disbelief as he hobbled to her side.
"I think it's our way out." Emily answered in bewilderment, her voice just above a whisper.
--------------Hi guys! As the school term has started once again, updates on my book will be painfully slow. I sincerely apologise for this but I really don't have any way around it. My schedule is packed and by the time I get home I'm ready to collapse and sleep,so I'm really sorry for the slow updates.
Nonetheless, I will eventually finish this book- don't worry I won't leave you hanging.
Just bear with me and my slow updates okay? :)
Love you guys to the moon and back.
Especially those who will stick with this book to the end ❤
