---------------------------------------------
Getting ready for the ball was tricky. In the back of mind was the thought that Kol would be there, and I wanted to impress him by looking good. But then another part of me mentally slapped myself for swooning over a man over 1000 years old. Although, he sure was handsome. Oh god. What is happening to me.
I looked through my closet, you could say I wasn't the most girly girl in the world, so whatever number I wear will be something no one has seen before. But I was seriously lacking in the dresses department.
So pushing that problem to the back of my mind I decided to go into the bathroom and style my hair first. After about 10 minutes of fiddling around I decided to straighten it and pull back the front bit and my fringe with a clip. I wasn't hugely into makeup either so I just put on the basics but more mascara than usual. I knew if I started experimenting with eyeliner it would end up in a big mess, so I left that for another day.
As I walked back into my room I saw a package sitting on my bed.
What? This was strange. Feeling silly, I warily walk up to the gift and tap it, as if to make sure it wasn't a bomb or a live animal like you see in the movies.
Nope. Not a bomb. Giving up, I grabbed it and ripped the packaging off. It was a dress.
And not just any dress, one of the most amazing dresses I had ever seen. It was black, strapless, but not too raunchy as it still came down to my knees. A small bow tied around the back, and there were intricate golden patterns woven around the hem.
There was a note attached. It read:
"It would give me great pleasure if you were to wear this to our ball tonight. See you there." In great handwriting, of course. I wouldn't be suprised if it was Caroline or Tyler.
I smiled. I was grateful though. Whoever this was had saved me from that particular dilemma. So I slipped it on and grabbed some heels - not that I enjoyed wearing them because I was already too tall, but these were only small, and I didn't want to be the only girl in flats (as usual).
I hear the honking of a horn outside as I walk towards the front door. Looking out the window I realise it's Tyler.
Oh. That's right, he was picking me up. Grabbing my purse and phone, I quickly rush outside to the car and grin at him. He looks me up and down in shock, making me frown.
"What? Is something wrong?"
I hope I didn't look that bad.
He staggered on his words. "Um , I-i ,
Y-you-"
I laugh, enjoying his discomfort.
He sighs. "I was going to say that you look like an actual girl tonight, I'm so used to seeing you in trackies and sweaters."
Oh, great. "Hey thanks Ty."
I slide into his jeep and he starts the ignition with a flick of his hand. "That's just lovely."
####
When we arrive the house is lit up like crazy and there is lots of cars parked outside. Ty parks his jeep around the side of the house and then we walk up and through the open front doors. I don't know what Tyler is feeling, but I'm pretty overwhelmed at this very moment. It's as if every important person to grace this town, was socialising in this large foyer.
I hear an excited squeal to my right and turn my head to see Caroline rushing up to me.
"I love your dress!"
"Hey thanks Carr"
It took me a moment to take in her gorgeous dress.
"Wow, where did you get this?"
She scowled. "Klaus. He sent it to me, it just somehow 'appeared' on my bed. A note and everything."
I grinned. "Hey I got a dress too! Looks like Klaus is trying to earn everyones' love tonight. What did your note say?"
She smiled. "I can't remember to be perfectly honest, but it did have his name at the end of it."
Dammit.
"Oh, mine didn't. I just assumed it was you or Tyler trying to force me into a dress or something." I laughed.
She laughed along with me. "Oh yes, I can afford expensive dresses, of course."
We both look up as the clinking of a glass can be heard from the top of the stairs.
All of the Mikaelsons were lined up on the staircase and Elijah was ready to make a toast. I slowly look up the stairs. At the bottom was Finn, who was wearing a frown, then Rebekah, in a bronze coloured dress. Then went: Klaus, staring at me and Caroline with a mischievous smile, Elijah who had already started speaking graciously and then.... Kol. He looked so good in a tux I couldn't help but stare. He had styled up his hair perfectly and stood looking over the crowd with a smirk on his face, holding his wine glass in hand. Before I knew it, his eyes skimmed past Caroline and straight onto me. Realising I had been gaping at him this whole time I quickly looked away and focused on Elijah's speech.
It had something to do with the reuniting of his family into one again. I politely clapped at the end and then went over to mingle with the crowd. Damon and Stefan had walked in a while earlier, both with an arm around Elena. I wasn't suprised. Even though Elena was with Stefan, Damon always seemed protective of her. It was no secret that he loved her too. I strode over and started talking to him.
"How's the evening going, lover boy?"
I said with a wink.
He looked at me, then faked a laugh.
"Oh how funny you are Miss Harrington, I shan't stop appreciating your humour!"
He then glared. "It's going fine I guess, apart from Elena who has this stupid idea that her and Esther need to have a wee 'chat.' No way in hell is she going anywhere near that psycho original."
I left out the fact that I had already seen Stefan sneak Elena up the stairs a minute earlier. "Oh yeah, she seems kind of intimidating doesn't she."
I heard someone step up behind me. Damon scowled.
"Hello Grace"
I turn around slowly, and my heart melts.
"You look lovely this evening."
Kol's accent made my insides churn, but in a good way.
"Thanks Kol." I smile and couldn't help but blush a little.
Damon groans. "I'm going to make my acquaintance with our lovely Mayor. Have to keep up with the town gossip - bye Grace."
I roll my eyes at Damon and shift my eyes back to Kol. He was studying me, and not like I was in a cage at the zoo (like his older brother often accidentally finds himself doing), more like he couldn't keep his eyes off me. Which... kind of freaked me out, as I knew that if he felt the need, he could rip me to shreds in seconds.
"So, I see you wore my gift." He smirked.
My eyes grew wide at this. "T-this was from you?"
"Why of course. Who else?" He eyes shine as the smile spreads across his face.
I blush. "Thank you. I really do like it."
"I'm glad. It really compliments... the shape of your body."
I blush even more and he laughed. All of a sudden, Klaus's face flashes through my head and I remember who I am talking to.
"Um I have people to see-"
Kol butts in, "Oh really, like who?"
His smirk pissed me off. I felt like he was constantly making fun of my humanity. Yet when I looked at his eyes they showed more understanding. There's two parts to him, and I don't have any idea what to think. Before I could answer and mock his accent, I heard another clink of a glass, this time from Esther, at the top of the staircase.
"I would like to make another toast, to my family. Champange is coming around on platters and I ask you to join me in sharing a drink to the reunion of my children and I, together again."
Kol winked at me and snatched a glass for both of us. I sighed and took mine from his hand.
A few seconds later, everyone was sipping their champange, but somehow, something felt wrong. I looked around. Everyone was back to chatting and socialising, but somehow my gut was telling me that something wasn't right. I turn back around to see Kol had moved over to Rebekah, and they seem to being having an in-depth conversation. I take this as my chance to escape.
I walk over to find Klaus.
"How's your evening going? Don't you think the guest list is a little stretched?" I smirked.
He turns to me. "I could see you and Kol having a nice chat over there."
"Oh don't you start agai-"
Klaus's sister appeared at my side.
"Hello Grace. I don't think we've officially met. I'm Rebekah."
She looked at me disapprovingly, but with an air of confidence that sent a shiver down my spine.
"Nice to meet you. I only know you as Klaus's favourite relative." I laugh quietly.
She ignores the comment.
"Unfortunately you and I have a matter to discuss. My dear brother won't help me with any of my daring plans, as it seems he is trying to impress a certain girl."
I raise my eyebrows.
"And what are these 'plans?' "
She smiles. "Killing your dear friend Matt of course. People need a message of whose in charge in this town. Now, if you'll excuse me.."
My heart drops and I look at Klaus for support as she wanders away. "Klaus! Do something!"
He looks over at me and rolls his eyes. "I'm afraid my sis-ta has a mind of her own love."
"Fine. I'll go find Damon to help."
By the time I'd found the older Salvatore I see Matt walking through the door from the driveway, with Rebekah at his side. As they walk past she whispers in my ear.
"I've decided to spare your little friend for tonight. Feel blessed."
I send her a glare and Damon turns to me.
"You're lucky she spared the quarterback. She's not normally this nice."
Tyler catches my eye and strolls over, putting his hand on my shoulder.
"You ready to go?"
I look over at Kol talking to Elijah up on the staircase. He must've felt my gaze on him as he turns towards me and grins againZ
"Yes, please. I'm exhausted. Bye Damon."
We head out the front doors. It had been a weird night. From what I'd seen of the Mikaelsons so far, I wanted nothing to do with them. But somehow I got the feeling that was the complete opposite of what was going to happen.

Once again I tried to base this chapter around true VD events, but I can't get the words exactly correct :)
