Chapter 9: I Was Here

*The next morning found the group asleep. Melissa was asleep in bed with Jay and Jay woke up before her and kissed her head and then got dressed and let her sleep. She looked so peaceful. He left a note for her with a lily on it.

Then he opens the door and then closes the door behind him and walks up to Mouse and tells him to put Gretchen in her bed so she can sleep then they can make the girls breakfast.

Mouse smiles and lifts Gretchen in his arms and brings her to her room lays her on her bed and then she curls up into her bed.

Mouse makes sure she is covered and then leaves her room shutting the door behind him.

He walks over to the kitchen and sees Jay. They talk while coffee is being made. He left a note for Gretchen with a rose.*

Jay: I'm warning you Melissa will wake up at the smell of coffee.

Mouse: * smiles.* you mean to tell me you didn't tire her out?

Jay: * laughs* I am ninety-nine point nine percent confident.

Mouse: There is that one percent chance.

* Melissa was knocked out and asleep in her bed. She didn't wake up. Gretchen was asleep as well.

Jay found eggs and then found bacon and Mouse found pancake mix. Jay found strawberries and bananas. Mouse found chocolate chips. They talk while the girls sleep. *

Jay: So you gonna tell me how last night went when Melissa and I left you two alone?

Mouse: * smiles* Gretchen and I talked and kissed a lot then turned the music off and watched a movie.

Jay: * smiles* Do you like Gretchen?

Mouse: * smiles making the pancakes.* yes I do.

Jay:* Smiles* That's good news, my friend.

Mouse: I wish I knew if she did like me.

Jay: Trust me she does.

Mouse: yeah?

Jay: * nods* the way she looked at you the whole time last night.

Mouse: I'm gonna ask her out.

Jay: * smiles while preparing the eggs.* Nice Mouse!

Mouse: * looks at Jay* bro, you're cooking!

Jay: * smiles* I learned when Melissa was home from the hospital!

Mouse: really?

Jay: My girl loves to cook.

Mouse: She is not a take-out girl huh?

Jay: I had to call Melissa's mom and grandma to help me cook things that Melissa was asking for.

Mouse: I told you you need to learn to cook.

Jay: Well I learned.

Mouse: I'm so proud of you.

Jay: Thanks, bro.

* Melissa turned to one side of the bed and reached out to not feel Jay lying next to her. She found a note and a lily. She smiled and read the note.

Jay's note to Melissa:

Hey Beautiful,

You looked so peaceful I couldn't wake you up.

I will be making you and Gretchen breakfast with Mouse.

Please stay in bed and just relax and enjoy being in bed.

I love you!

Melissa smiled and then got up and got dressed she found shorts and a shirt from Jay put them on and lay in bed.

Gretchen was asleep she smiled when she woke up to find herself in her bed and then looked around the room and found a note and a rose. She read the note from Mouse.

Note From Mouse:

Good Morning Gretchen,

I had a great time last night, I am making breakfast for you and Melly Bean with Jay. I hope you can relax and enjoy your time in bed.

Mouse <3

Gretchen smiled and then decided to get into comfy clothes and then changed and then went right back to bed.

She was so happy that Melissa tried to make her room as comfortable as possible for her. She then snuggled into her bed and went back to sleep.

Jay and Mouse were laughing and talking in the kitchen. Melissa was sitting up in her bed and then she grabbed her phone and texted Gretchen.

Text to Gretchen:

Melissa to Gretchen: Hey girlie!

Gretchen to Melissa: Hey there girlie!

Melissa to Gretchen: What is up?

Gretchen to Melissa: Mouse gave me a note and a flower.

Melissa to Gretchen: aww, Jay gave me a note and a flower.

Gretchen to Melissa; I like him he is really sweet.

Melissa to Gretchen: He likes you too he has told Jay.

Gretchen to Melissa: I want to go on another date with him.

Melissa to Gretchen: I am so happy for you girlie.

Melissa to Gretchen: He hasn't really stayed at his place much since I have been home from the hospital.

Gretchen to Melissa; It is why he and I are kinda besties he was so worried about you and he was very scared to lose you.

*Jay and Mouse clean up the kitchen and then bring a tray of food with them and then Jay knocks on the door of Melissa's room before opening the door and smiles when he sees her in bed awake. Mouse knocks on the door and smiles seeing Gretchen wrapped up in the blankets.*

Jay: Good Morning Beautiful!

Melissa; Good Morning Handsome!

Jay: You actually stayed in bed?

Melissa; * smiles* well I got up and got dressed!

Jay: * laughs walking closer to Melissa* I can fix that later.

Melissa; * Laughs and helps Jay with the tray* My goodness baby!

Jay: I made you breakfast with Mouse's help!

Melissa; Baby I see and I love it!

* Jay sits next to Melissa and kisses her smiling.*

Jay: You're welcome, Anything for you!

Melissa; * smiles into their kiss* You're so sweet!

* Melissa and Jay eat breakfast together and drink their coffee together. Melissa was so happy Jay was so thoughtful. She was finishing her cup of coffee when Jay spoke to her while drinking his.*

Jay: Can I ask you a question?

Melissa; Of course!

Jay: Now this is just a for instance.

Melissa; Okay!

Jay: IF I were to ask you to marry me what would your answer be?

Melissa;* Eyes widen with happiness* Really?

Jay: They promised your family they would look out for you I feel I would need to ask them for permission to marry you?

Melissa; * smiles* I understand that sure!

Jay: What do you see if you're being proposed to?

Melissa; * clears her throat and smiles* I always see in this case YOU proposing to me somewhere romantic.

* Jay loves hearing Melissa tell him what she wants.*

Melissa: To be honest I see my family and everyone who is important to us there!

Melissa; * smiles* Really?

Jay: If something should happen to either you or I know that I want to marry you!

Melissa; * looks at Jay and pulls him close to her.* Baby, What is going to happen?

Melissa; * looks at Jay and cups his face in her hands looking into his eyes. * Baby, where is this coming from?

Jay: * looks at Melissa and places his hands on hers as he responds.* Should you end up getting hurt and you end up in the hospital or I get hurt or kidnapped again I want you to know I love you and only you!

* Melissa leans in and kisses Jay, wrapping her arms around him and he kisses her back he gently pulls her with him to lay on the bed. She giggles and he smiles and then they hold each other and talk.*

Melissa; * smiles looking at Jay* You feel better?

Jay: I would feel better if I told you where that came from.

Melissa; So tell me!

Jay: * looks at Melissa* When you were in the hospital, I really was scared I might lose you!

Melissa; * Nods* I know Baby, You didn't!

Jay: It was hard to think positive when you were in the state you were in.

Melissa: Thanks for staying with me.

Jay: I'll always stay.

*Jay said promisingly, smiling as he held Melissa and pressed the most tender of kisses to her lips.*

Melissa: You have always been there for me without question.

*Melissa was nervously rambling and if it wasn't for the fact Jay could visibly see her freaking herself out, he would have found it adorably amusing.

*Jay was fully in for the long hall when it came to Melissa. He wanted what they both talked about in the car on the way back to Chicago from South Bend:

the house, the kids, the dogs, the endless adventures, the front porch swing in the countryside once they'd retired with a big lawn for their grandkids to play on.

Jay wanted everything with Melissa. He was keeping himself at a realistic level of expectation though when it came to Melissa.

Melissa and Jay decided it was time to actually take a shower and get dressed. Melissa came out of her shower and Jay smiled she was wearing her towel and she was in her closet looking for an outfit.

Then Jay after trying to take Melissa's towel off without succeeding decided it was time to take a shower. Melissa found her outfit and then got dressed and then went right to work on doing her hair.

Jay came out of the shower and smiled watching her do her hair was fascinating to him. She didn't notice Jay was looking at her.

She kept doing her hair and then noticed that Jay was in the mirror looking at her. She smiled talking to him.*

Melissa; Hi there babe!

Jay: Hey there gorgeous.

Melissa; What is going on handsome?

Jay: How about we see what Gretchen and Mouse are up to?

Melissa: Don't bother They are making out in her room.* giggles*

Jay: * laughs* Wow! hun, I know you and Gretchen and Kim were going to hang out today huh?

Jay: Okay then what should we do?

Jay: * laughs and then kisses Melissa back and then goes to get dressed and talks to Melissa.* You will have to give that back.

Jay: * bites his lip as he zips up his jeans and walks over to Melissa shirtless then turns her to face him and then gently lifts his shirt up and off of Melissa.* Just like that it comes right off! * puts his shirt on.*

Melissa; * Smiles and bites her lip when she sees Jay walking toward her and she laughs when he lifts his shirt off of her. Then she goes into her closet and then finds another shirt of Jay's. * That is okay my sexy boyfriend has tons of shirts.

Jay;* Laughs* Okay you win! * smiles gently grabbing Melissa and kissing her and lifts her in his arms.* I love you!

Melissa; * Smiles and kisses Jay back and when he lifts her she wraps her legs around him.* I Love you too!

Jay:* gently smacks Melissa's butt and then gently puts her down.* You can't look this hot!

Melissa:* laughs and screams when Jay smacks her butt.* JAY! * smiles when Jay puts her down on the ground. She gently wraps her arms around Jay and looks into his eyes.* Why?

* Melissa's phone is going off and she dashes to her room to grab it and answers the phone.*

Voight: I have exciting news for you!

Voight: The FBI wants you!

Melissa; ME? Why the hell do they want me?

Melissa goes to the kitchen to pull out some stuff to make lunch and then Jay follows her and they are still heated in the argument.*

Jay; That is FOOLISH OF YOU!

Jay: It's foolish because you are not going to take a chance to take advantage of this golden opportunity!

Gretchen: Forget that you have so many cases you solved while working the beat with Kim.

Mouse: Forget all the cases you solved and led while working in intelligence!

Gretchen: Forget that you have the skills that qualify you to solve whatever case is needing you out in New York!

Melissa; FUCK YOU GUYS! * frustrated groan.* I am so pissed right now I want to punch something!

* Gretchen and Mouse and Jay laugh but try to hold it back so as not to piss Melissa off more.

They were about to say something to her when her phone went off and then Melissa answered the phone.*

* Jay and Mouse eventually leave and then head home. Melissa and Gretchen clean up and then talk about everything.

Melissa then begins to look for her suitcase and then she tosses it on her bed and then opens it and begins to make a list of what to pack.

She didn't want to leave Chicago. She didn't want to help Erin, She didn't want to leave HER Jay Alexander Halstead!

New York may be the land of Sex and The City and Carrie Bradshaw and Mister Big but the one thing it will never ever have is Detective Jay Halstead!

Melissa didn't want to leave she did not want to go to New York. She was only doing this to appease Jay and to appease Mouse and Gretchen.

Jay on the drive back to his place he thought about what he told Melissa and now that he was in the car by himself he was able to process what he told her.

Did he want to tell her to go to New York?

Did he really want to make her so upset by telling her to go to New York?

He lost a partner and a friend and someone he was going to propose to, in New York!

He didn't want New York to take the actual person that he truly loved, the person that if she did leave and left for good his whole world would actually fall apart.

He didn't want to be the boyfriend who wasn't supportive but he was torn because he didn't want to be the boyfriend who was selfish!

Jake and Melissa broke up because Jake gave Melissa an ultimatum.

He was never going to do that to anyone he loved especially Melissa.

He knew Melissa was mad at him and he figured if she really didn't want to go then she would come back home right away. Then they can put this whole FBI New York garbage behind them.

Till then he was trying to be supportive and just let her know he was in her corner no matter what she deciced.

He just couldn't help but feel a part of him wonder if Melissa ended up liking New York what would he do?

would he quit CPD and then move to New York and be with Melissa?

Would he try to go to New York to bring Melissa back with him to Chicago?

He had so many thoughts and so many questions and fears floating inside his head.

Melissa was mad at Jay for telling her he didn't want her to have regrets.

She would regret not staying with Jay and then having the future she would want with him.

She looked ahead at her life five years and she saw her and Jay together still.

She looked ahead ten years and there were Melissa and Jay together.

She looked ahead twenty years and saw her and Jay together still!

She sees the constant person in her life would be Jay!

That is what she wanted that is what she would regret if she left for New York!

She wanted to try to go into this with an open mind but she didn't give a flying fuck about the FBI or New York.

she wanted to be in Chicago with Jay Halstead and her team in intelligence for the CPD!

She then realized she would be even farther away from South Bend and that gutted her even more and made her more mad at Jay and herself!

She was knocked out of her thoughts when her father was calling her. She sighed and answered the phone.*

Melissa: Hi Daddy!

Angel: Hello mi Princesa!

Melissa: How is Afghanistan?

Angel: you know Mia the same.

Melissa: *smiles* I'm looking forward to the holidays.

Melissa walks in walks up to the bar and orders a hard cider. The girls ordered a drink too and then they claimed a table and talked to Melissa.

Jay went to the bar and ordered a beer the guys followed suit and then they claimed a table. The guys were trying to talk to Jay.*

Kim: Melissa, why aren't you excited about this?

Melissa: I don't want to go!

Gretchen: she is worried she won't fit in.

Kim: Girl you are more than qualified.

Gretchen: also you were way harsh with Jay!

Gretchen: I wish I could tell you what he has planned for you!

Jay: I'm ready when you are!

Melissa: * gently places her hand in Jay's and walks out of the pool hall.* Come on!

Jay: * smiles locking his fingers with Melissa's * Lead the way beautiful.

* Melissa and Jay walk out of the pool hall together, walking to her car. It takes about twelve minutes to get from the pool hall to Jay's apartment.

Once they are in the car Jay leans in and kisses Melissa. Jay talks to Melissa once that kiss breaks.*

Jay: You still mad at me?

Melissa: I wasn't really mad at you just annoyed.

Jay: I just want you to not miss out on opportunities.

Melissa: I get it but still my whole world is here.

Jay: The whole world you think you know.

* Melissa laughs she starts her car after kissing Jay one more time. Melissa's heart fills with excitement like it's the very first time they kissed.

She is kissing her boyfriend who also is her partner the guy who has always been there for her. The guy who without question loves her just as much as she loves him.

She glances at him from behind the wheel from a spot where she normally doesn't sit at finding it a little funny how much things have changed since this morning.

Jay and Melissa have had a very up-and-down year together. Then this morning's heated argument made things difficult for them.

After years of dancing around one another and confessions of feelings being cut short because they were in a committed relationship or the fear of losing the other, they were finally together.

Melissa now being with Jay she didn't want to lose him. Then the phone call this morning Melissa received made all the things that were starting to go well or she felt like she was taking a step backward.

She doesn't realize she's staring until he looks her way and flashes her a knowing smile, He stretches an arm across the console and sets a hand over her knee and squeezes, and it's sweet in the way he does it.

It's the way Jay can calm her down with just a look or touch. She lifts her head, meeting Jay's eyes for the briefest of moments before she looks back on the road.

She glances at his hand still on her knee at a red light and moves her free hand to gently cover his, needing to touch him too.

She barely threads her fingers over the top of his before a rush of warmth shoots through her again, She has never wanted anyone as much as she wants him at this moment. He is the only guy in the world who she has been with that has this effect on her.

He doesn't let go of her until they arrive at his place, but it's only long enough for them to unbuckle and open the car door, and then they close the door, and then he locks his fingers with hers again.

They huddle into a corner of the elevator, fingers brushing over the skin again, their gazes flickering between the other's eyes and their lips in a silent dance neither wants to end.

They barely make it inside Jay's apartment before Jay shuts the door and presses her up against it, and then his lips are on hers again. She takes her boots off and he takes his shoes off.

Familiarity settles between them as if their first kiss a kiss they shared happened years ago. When she was there for Jay the night of his really bad PTSD cycle he only trusted her and still does. They almost kissed but were in committed relationships and knew it was gonna be wrong if they kissed.

They stumble their way through the apartment, bodies pressed together, desperate to touch one another as much as they can, and then they finally make it into Jay's bedroom.

Just before taking things even further Melissa looks at Jay and breaks the silence that has been between themtill now.*

Melissa: should we talk first?

Jay: We will later. * smiles*

* Jay tangles his hands into her long hair while Melissa fumbles with his belt. With every tug and pull, every swipe of tongues, it becomes more and more like as if the argument from earlier never happened.*

Jay: I love you!

Melissa: *smiles* I love you too!

*They fall onto the edge of Jay's bed, wandering hands pulling off clothes and tossing them without care. Jay smiles untying her top lifting it up and tossing it on the floor.

Another kiss, another breath. She gently tugs his shirt over his head, and he gently pulls her leggings off adding them to the pile of clothes forgotten on the floor.

They shuffle to the middle of the bed, limbs tangling together easily once the last of their clothes are discarded, lips wandering excitedly with a desperate need to taste the other like it's the first time.

Jay hovers above her, holding his weight easily as he leaves a trail of hot, open-mouthed kisses from the sweet spot on her neck leading him to the valley of her breasts, down her stomach, and between her legs.

Then back up her body she moans at the feel of his touch and his lips on her body. Melissa keeps thinking about how much she is in love with Jay and all she can hope for and pray is that he will be her last.

She allows her mind to wander again for a moment, thinking about how easy it all feels with him, they have crossed a line and if her going to New York ruins it and makes it hard to come back from, she worries she doesn't want to lose her everything.

This man has saved her life, has been her best friend for years, been the best partner who has always had her back just as she has his.

It's amazing how much their hearts beat with just a look when they meet each other's eyes now with sweet smiles and sweet kisses, how they caress one another so delicately the way lovers do.

They are eager to please each other, loving each other deeply like this, It is more than she ever imagined it could be, and she has imagined it plenty; on lonely nights before they got together and even when she was with Jake and Jay was with Erin where her mind would wander to him and what they could be, and then she'd let her hands wander too.

He can tell her mind is somewhere else so he begins pressing slow kisses to her neck and chest. He looks into her eyes his green eyes so calm and her brown eyes sparkling. *

Jay: Are you alright?

* He asks with such a soft voice as he stares down at her.*

Melissa: Is it that obvious that I'm all over the place?

Jay: you're fine you're with me.

Melissa: * smiles and kisses Jay* it's true I am with you. 

* Jay takes the kiss deeper and she smiles and lifts her hands to his cheek and over his shoulder wanting him close to her.

He opens his mouth to her, and she moans into him at the feeling their kiss gives her all through her body.

He settles his hips between hers and her legs spread wider for him, and when he finally slides into her, everything just seems to make sense.

As if she is finally able to relax. He moves with ease and cradles her with gentle hands, wanting to take his time with her, and she lets him.

Her eyes soon flutter and roll back until they close completely, and she arches up into him in a way that doesn't seem, as if she can't get any closer to him than she is already.

They come together within moments of the other with heavy grunts and whispers of each other's name.

when he collapses on top of her, both panting, chests heaving together, she welcomes his weight and clutches him to her. She could stay there with him like that forever.*

Melissa; He will tell you truthfully if something is wrong with him!

Melissa; * shakes her head no* He won't want me to worry since I am gonna be 800 miles away!

Kim: Jesus! Have you already calculated how far away you are gonna be?

Melissa; * laughs* I am a cop I do that!

Kim: Why?

Melissa; I always did that when I was little I always wanted to know exactly how far away I was going to be from my home!

Kim: Why?

Gretchen: It is how Melissa grounds herself!

Kim: Why though?

Melissa; It gives me comfort! 800 miles away is not that far it's far but not as far as my father is from me!

Gretchen; Ohhhh now I know why you do it!

Kim: You find comfort in knowing exactly how many miles you are from what matters to you.

Melissa; it just helps me!

Gretchen: She misses her dad a little less when she knows the mileage.

Kim: What if Jay ever decided to reenlist?

* Melissa and the girls laugh and decide after all to go shopping Melissa wanted to look at the dress options out here and then compare them to New York!

Melissa found a few options and she bought them Gretchen told her to make sure when she comes back from New York that if she brought a dress she was for sure going to wear to return the ones that she wasn't going to use.

Soon enough the weekend was over and Gretchen was getting ready for her new job. Melissa let Gretchen use her car since Jay was picking her up!

Melissa was just about ready Jay called her to let her know he was going to be there soon.

So she made sure she was ready and looked in the mirror she was thinking about what she was going to say to her crew about New York. She knew she was going to cry.

She kept trying to think this was a golden opportunity for her. She was already miserable.

She had everything for New York packed when she went shopping she went overboard with her wardrobe for New York.

She then headed out of her place and locked up and then saw Jay get in his car and kiss him in greeting.

They headed to work together and then when they got out of Jay's truck Jay and Melissa walked hand in hand to the District.

Trudy saw them walk in and Trudy stopped Melissa. She didn't want to say anything without crying so she said if she wanted to talk Trudy should come upstairs!

Melissa scanned in and then walked upstairs with Jay. She looked around and saw Al's empty desk and then walked over to her desk and put her stuff down.

Trudy was upstairs and Adam and Antonio and Mouse and Kevin arrived. Hank came out of his office. He was smiling He then spoke to everyone. *

Hank: Today we carry on even without Al!

* everyone looks at Al's desk and then back at Hank.*

Hank: In spite of that I have some news to share with you all.

Adam: what's up boss?

Hank: I love working with all of you!

Everyone: likewise.

Hank: However, when one of you is a star shining so damn bright it's time to let you shine everywhere!

Kevin; What the hell are you talking about Sarge?

Hank: Melissa has some news for you all!

Melissa; * clears her throat and looks at everyone.* I am going to be gone for seven days!

Antonio: Where the hell are you going?

Melissa; The FBI wants my help with a cyber breach case Erin is working on and so They want to recruit me as well!

Adam: * smiles* They picked the right girl!

Melissa; * sniffles* I am the only one who is not happy about It!

Kevin: Why?

Melissa; * inhales and exhales and walks over to Al's desk. Then turns to look at every one.* Family!

Mouse; Melly Bean no matter where you go you will still be our girl!

Melissa; * laughs and wipes a tear away.* I have everything I need here! I have You all, the district! an Excellent partner and boyfriend! My childhood best friend is living with me now!

Jay: * looks at Melissa.* If you don't go you are going to have regrets!

Adam: You won't be happy till you have seen all of the world!

Melissa: * wipes her tears away looking at everyone.* I expect more from you dudes!

Melissa; * smiles and looks at the Blackhawks bear and she smiles at the number on the jersey of the bear.* Awwww Jay!

* Kevin and Antonio and Adam, Kim, and Trudy, and Hank and Mouse mimick Melissa's Awwwww Jay she scowls at them.*

Jay: I am going to miss you like crazy!

Melissa; I am going to miss you too!

* Melissa did some paperwork as much as she could to help Mouse Jay and Kim before she left.

She then Hugged everyone and went home she looked around in the locker room and smiled she went everywhere she had been in the district before going home. She looked around and had a flood of wonderful memories and hard memories.

She felt the tears run down her face. Then she one more time in and then went to the bullpen and walked around she sat at her desk once more.

she went into the coffee room and grabbed Jay's coffee mug she grabbed a sharpie wrote him a note and placed it in his cup. Then placed it back in the cabinet grabbed everyone's mug and wrote them notes.

She then went into Hanks's office where Hank was sitting and he gave her the signal to come into his office.*

Hank: Hey Kiddo Halstead is looking for you!

Melissa; I was walking around the district.

Hank: know you can come back!

Melissa; When I do come back Kim stays up here!

Hank: no question about that!

Melissa; there is one more spot I need to go visit but I need Halstead for that!

Hank: Nadia, Al and Richards, and Matthews and Julie?

Melissa; * cries* yeah!

Hank; * gets up and hugs Melissa* You are going to be just fine kiddo, New York won't know what hit them!

Melissa: I am so nervous!

Hank: Erin will show you the ropes and if she doesn't let us know we will come up there and let her know how to take care of you!

Melissa: just bring me back home!

Hank: I really want you to go into this with an open mind!

Melissa; I hate that I am leaving!

Hank: You will come back it is only seven days!

Melissa; IF not sooner!

Jay: * walks up to the bullpen and smiles when he sees Melissa talking to Hank and then he walks to Hank's office.* Hey you two!

Jay: For a little bit there is somewhere I have to take you!

Melissa; Okay then after that please I want to spend time with you!

* Jay and Melissa leave the bullpen and then Melissa runs back to her desk and grabs the current picture of her and everyone in intelligence the picture of her and Nadia and Julie and the picture of her and Al and her and Jay and her and Richards and Matthews.

Melissa leaves with Jay and then Jay walks with her to Nadia and Al and Richards and Matthews and Julie's Grave.

She stays there for a bit and then leaves with Jay to his car and then they get in his car and she places her stuff in the back seat then when they arrive at Molly's she looks at Jay and she shakes her head no.*

Jay: Come on, please?

Melissa; this is going to hurt even more!

Jay: It's supposed to be a surprise!

Melissa; I rather you all tell me not to go!

Jay: Baby, Please let's go into Molly's for a little while and then head to your place!

Melissa: Fine!

* Melissa and Jay get out of his car shut the door and he walks over to her holds her hand and then opens the door for her to enter Molly's she walks in and everyone is there!

She smiles and hugs everyone who walks up to her. She tries not to cry. She made it all the way through but then they asked her to say something.

She stood up and then cleared her throat and looked at everyone as she spoke and cried about halfway through.*

Melissa; * looks at everyone* I just need you all to know I am not staying in New York!

Everyone: Laughs

Melissa; I am scared and thankful for this horrible opportunity!

Everyone; Awww

Melissa; I wish they picked someone else, not me!

Everyone: BOOO!

Melissa; now that they did pick me I am going to try to be open-minded about this not working out and I come back home!

Jay: NO!

Melissa; I am going to miss you all more than you know, especially my Intelligence crew! I will miss my boys! Burgess good luck girl!

Melissa; You all don't know how much this hurts to leave and have to remind myself I am coming back!

* Melissa cried and couldn't say anymore and then she drank with everyone and then after some time she found Severide and he gave her a hug and told her not to worry she would be back!

She hugged his new girlfriend Maddie as well. She hugged and cried with Gabbi, She hugged Herrmann and cried too. She cried when she saw Roman show up after shift!

She looked around Molly's as she was walking out with Jay to his car and she tried to memorize everyone's face but they all were crying so it was hard for her cause she would cry too.

Jay and she tried to make the most of the time they had together. Jay and Melissa went to Navy Pier later that night like they used to when they were just at the beginning of their close friendship.

They went to all the places they went to when they would hang out. Jay and Melissa spent time at her place and then on Tuesday morning.

They wasted no time. They grabbed breakfast together and then went to Lake Michigan and then Jay took her to one more place He wanted to take her to Millennium Park and walk around with her. They did and then ended up at her place at night.

Jay took her to Cite even though it was their first date restaurant he took her there. When they came back to her place she and Jay spent the night having sex and then talking and Melissa was dreading the time to come to take her to the airport.*

Jay: You okay?

Melissa: No!

Jay: I'll come get you I promise.

Melissa: I wish you would stop me from going!

Jay: I want to believe me I want to.

Melissa: Then please do it!

Jay: I wouldn't be a good boyfriend or partner if I told you not to go and at least give it a try.

*Melissa cried off and on all night, she didn't understand why Jay wouldn't tell her to stay. Then she thought about it and the only thing she could come up with was Jay was letting her go in case she didn't come back.

That only hurt her more.

She could understand why he did it. She was different though.

Unfortunately, it all came too soon before Melissa knew it she was making sure she had everything packed Jay had come over and Gretchen went to spend time with Mouse.

She and Mouse had been seeing a lot of each other and Gretchen didn't want to say goodbye to her bestie the day of because it would hurt her.

Jay was sitting on Melissa's bed watching her making sure she had everything packed and that she needed and then she grabbed the bear Jay gave her and placed it in her suitcase.

She then looked at Jay and then got dressed and came out of the bathroom ready he walked with her to his car and he held her hand on the way to the Airport she looked at him she was so unhappy.

Melissa was Dreading leaving. When they got to the airport she looked at Jay and cried. He then helped her with her stuff and walked with her until he couldn't walk with her anymore it was a long goodbye and Melissa gave him a teary-eyed smile but told him she loved him and he told her he loved her. *

Jay: I love you!

Melissa; I love you too.

Jay: have a safe flight.

Melissa: you promise you'll come and get me?

Jay: I promise!

Melissa; I will always come back to you!

Melissa; * cries* sometimes it might take me a little longer to come back to you but I will always come back to you!

* Jay and Melissa kiss and then when the kiss breaks Melissa unwillingly leaves and walks to her gate. She turns around and runs back to Jay hugs him and kisses him.*

Melissa: I am coming back!

Jay: I know.

Melissa: I promise I won't leave you.

Jay: I won't lose you to New York I understand.

Melissa: New York can't compete with Chicago.

Jay: why?

Melissa: Chicago has something that New York could never ever have.

Jay: * smiles.* What is that?

Melissa: you, you're the one you're it for me!

Jay: * smiles and looks at Melissa* You tell me this now?

Melissa: I want you to remember this.

She looks at Jay every so often until she can't anymore. Jay watches her leave till he can't see her anymore and then heads back to his car and then he heads to work.*

DAY ONE

*It had been 12 hours since Jay dropped her off at the airport, 12 hours since she gave him a teary smile and they had their goodbye kiss, and 12 hours since he watched her disappear behind the glass doors, and it felt like it had been forever.

12 hours since his girl told him he was the one for her.

12 hours which felt like 12 hundred years.

He walked into the district with a new darkness looming over his head, he felt like a storm cloud was following him around. He felt like his heart hurt and there was an emptiness with him.

It had only been 12 hours, but he already felt like the life had been sucked out of him.

He loved his job, he loved his team, but there was something missing and he couldn't shake it.

He was missing his girl. He wasn't sure he would be okay until she was in his arms again.

As he climbed the stairs to the bullpen - ignoring the knowing look from his desk sergeant - he gave the room a once over. It was like he was taken back in time.

The familiar feeling of dread settled in his stomach as he ascended the stairs alone, it had been many years since he felt a similar sense of loneliness.

Erin was an afterthought now, but in that moment he felt like a child again. The same dumb kid who lied and slept with his "informants,"

who always took it too far and leaped before he even thought to look. He hadn't been that person in a long time, not since Melissa.

He still leaped but now he had someone who took the jump with him and she always made sure that he looked first.

There was part of him that was scared with her gone, he would have no one to keep him from falling off the deep end.

He made it to his desk put his stuff down and then went to make himself a cup of coffee. He looked in his cup and then he noticed a note and he smiled it was from Melissa his girl.*

The love of my life my Jay, I love you and I can't wait to see you in seven days if not sooner. "There's no one else's eyes that can see into me, No one else arms can lift me up so high. Your love lifts me out of time and you know my heart by heart!" I miss you so much, baby! - Melissa <3

*That made him happy and sad he took the note that had part of their song in it and placed it in his pocket then made his cup of coffee.

went back to his desk and was already typing on his computer Antonio had been trying to talk to Jay and it was like Jay was not even there. *

Antonio: Earth to Halstead!

*He heard Antonio and then was startled by a hand waving in front of his face. He picked his head up out of his hands and laid back in his chair, feigning a stretch. *

Antiono: You good man?

Kevin: You look like death.

It was Kevin and Antonio, who had a tiny smirk on their faces.

*Jay nodded, chuckling nervously.

Jay: Yeah, uh, just didn't sleep well.

*Kim stifled a laugh across the room, Antonio gave him a knowing look and Adam shook his head, leaning on his desk. *

Adam: Yeah, okay...

*He waltzed across the room to Jay and Kevin, and Kim and Mouse and Antionio motioning to Melissa's empty desk*

Kevin: Did our girl have an okay flight?

*He asked, knowing that Jay knew.*

It caught him off guard, he wasn't lying about not sleeping well, but he didn't say that it was because he stayed up all night with Melissa trying to make their last night together special. He smiled reading the text he just got from his girl. He nodded, *

Melissa: Hey my love 💋❤️💋😘

Jay: Yeah, she landed by now. this morning, Erin picked her up at the airport.

Kevin: Good

*Kevin said, nudging Jay's shoulder. *

Kevin: Glad Erin is taking care of our girl

*The words made Jay crack a smile, the first one since he had since he bid Melissa goodbye when dropping her off at the airport.

He glanced at the empty desk again, picking up his phone and snapping a picture of it. He clicked on his girl's contact info and drafted a text.*

Jay: i miss you babe. 😢😘

*It was short, but it was still enough to make his heart beat a little faster as he hit send. He figured to start the I miss you texts with a slight joke.

Everyone in the room knew that Melissa would reach across their computer screens to steal a pen or pencil whenever she needed, hers were lost as soon as she got them:

whether they had fallen from behind her ear or were dropped on the floor. Or got lost in her messy bun or ponytail or the ever so often lost in her boot or leggings pocket.

She never had one, but Jay knew that his sassy girl and knew she would have a sexy sassy remark as a response.

His phone buzzed against the fake wood not long after, and he turned it over a little faster than he would like to admit.*

Melissa: I miss you too ❤️‍🔥🔥💋😘

*A grin spread across his face as soon as he read it, and he coughed out a subtle laugh.*

Jay: Have a good day baby! ❤️ I miss you, my love!

*Her response came almost immediately. With a picture of her at her desk in New York.*

Melissa: You too Jay my love ❤️ I miss you too so much!

Melissa: Facetime with you and the team? 🥹🥹🥰

Jay: Guys Melissa wants to FaceTime!

*He clicked the green button so fast and everyone crowed around Jay to see Melissa. They smile. As soon as they see her face she smiles too. *

Melissa: Hey baby! Hey everyone! * smiling*

Jay: Hey baby!

Kevin: Hey boo!

Adam: Damn girl! Makeup is on point.

Antonio: Look at you all stylish!

Kim: Look at my bestie looking hot!

Jay: That look does suit you, babe!

Melissa: * points the camera at a waving Erin.* of course she is I'm her partner.

Erin: Don't worry guys I'll take care of her.

Erin; Melissa misses you all too she won't shut up about you all, especially Jay!

Melissa: I miss you too did you get my note in your coffee cup?

Jay: Yes I did I can't wait to see you!

Leader: All right listen up everyone!

Melissa: * frowns * guys I have to go our leader is gonna talk to us! Love you all bye! * blows a kiss and then the screen goes back to Jay's home screen with him and Melissa on it!

Everyone: Bye Melly! Kick ass! We miss you! Love you!

Jay: bye babe! Love you!

* Jay leans back in his seat, sighing. It wasn't the same as watching her from their desks clearing a scene together, or even just hearing her voice.

But, it was the first day, and he needed to pace himself. There would be 6 more days to miss her, and for now, this was already painful enough.

Melissa helped Erin at work using the skills she had she did need to call the team several times and have them help her. She was bound and determined to solve this case otherwise she would need to stay till the case was solved.

So she avoided that option like the plague. For day one she didn't do so bad. Erin and her after work went to get their nails done and then went shopping.

Melissa Facetimed Gretchen and Kim she cried while Facetimeing them because she missed them. Erin and Melissa grabbed dinner after they went shopping and then headed back to Erin's condo.

* Melissa and Erin kinda stay up and catch up. Then eventually go to sleep. Melissa can't sleep so she sits in a chair in the room she is in and looks at photos missing everyone. *

DAY TWO

Melissa hears her cell phone ring. From the sound of the tone, it is an incoming FaceTime call from Jay, especially by the ringtone.

Melissa: yes and we made a huge break in the case thanks to you and Mouse.

Jay: At least you're not stuck.

Melissa: yeah otherwise I would have to stay longer.

Jay: no anything to bring you home on time.

*Jay chuckles, his cheeks and the tips of his ears turning a slight pink color. *

*Melissa nods and stands. She carries the phone over to the sink and props it up. *

*Jay tells her all that's happening at work and with the case they have going on. How her fancy technology helped him.*

Melissa: Yeah. * smiles*

Xavier: it makes sense why you're here.

* Melissa and the FBI team work with Jay and Mouse's help Melissa wanted any help she could get she refused to stay in New York. She missed her team.

The other team members were jerks to her giving her a hard time she tried to make A joke and they treated her like she was stupid. She couldn't wait to get done with this case.

Jay noticed something when he was driving he looked at the seat next to him and noticed his girl was not next to him at a red light and something deep in his chest was making him squirm.

Was he really this much of a mess without her?

When he got back to his apartment a little while later, he pulled out his phone and texted his girl.*

* Melissa and Jay hung up and Melissa cried herself to sleep. Erin had been hearing Melissa cry herself to sleep and tell her how much she missed Chicago and Jay and she wanted to go home. Melissa hated every moment she was gone!*

DAY FOUR

*Jay poured over the set of photos and stacks of reports for the third or fourth time, he didn't find anything, but there was no way he wasn't missing something.

He needed another set of eyes, he needed Melissa's eyes.

It was just him and Trudy left, not that Trudy ever really went home when Mouch was on shift, everyone else had taken their frustration over the case in stride and gone home, but Jay couldn't let it go.

They were stuck on a string of robberies involving department stores, with multiple casualties, some of them kids. They just couldn't find the connection between the stores.

They were scattered all across the district, sold different things, and nothing specific was ever stolen.

And the crew, they were ruthless, they didn't care who got hurt if they were in the way, they were taken out.

Jay heard the sound of footsteps on the stairs, perking up in his seat. It was Trudy with a white takeout box in her hand.*

Jay: Sarge.* smiling*

Jay: Have I told you lately that you're my favorite person in the world?

Trudy: Haha!

*Trudy laughed, giving him a faked stink eye.*

Trudy: No you have not, but it's a good thing Gonzalez is not here to hear you say that.

*She watched Jay's face fall immediately.*

Jay: Good thing. * He said with a forced smile. *

*Trudy sat the box down on his desk and perched herself on Melissa's empty one next to him.*

Trudy:You miss her don't you?

*She asked, a small smirk playing on her lips. Jay sighed, leaning back in his chair.*

Jay: Of course I do.

*He said, the words tumbling out of his mouth with ease. Trudy's smirk grew and Jay just shrugged*

Jay: She's my partner and she is my girlfriend and my everything!

*Trudy stood, taking in the man that she had watched grow so much.

She couldn't explain the amount of pride she felt when she thought of the men and women in intelligence.

She and Mouch didn't get the chance to have their own children, so she always saw Hank's unit as her own little family.

She was proud of Jay especially, he had turned into an incredible cop and an even better man. She rested a hand on his shoulder.

She was missing Melissa around there too. She noticed the boys in intelligence were not the same they were without her. She didn't think the girl could have such an effect on the whole District!

Here is Melissa all the way in New York helping Erin with the FBI and they are here in Chicago missing her like crazy and hoping like hell The FBI is treating her right.*

Trudy: Yeah, I know. She is truly missed around here. *She sighed,*

Trudy: Go home soon okay? Get some sleep.

Jay: Yes ma'am,

*He said, squeezing her hand. As Trudy headed for the stairs, Jay watched her go.

He wasn't sure when it happened, but Trudy became someone that he could really count on.

And she was the closest thing he had to a mom, and he really needed his mom right now. *

Jay: Hey Sarge.

*He called and she spun around.*

Trudy: Yeah?

*Jay shook his head a bit, his voice coming out quiet*

Jay: She's coming back, right?

* Normally Trudy would be taken aback by Jay's forwardness, and she wished she had an answer for him, but she didn't.

The feds had a way of holding on to good people, and Melissa was the best. But for all their sakes, especially his, she hoped Melissa would come home, despite the fancy suits, the better pay, and the elegant and shiny offices, she hoped she would choose Chicago. But she couldn't really say that to Jay. *

Trudy: She better, she owes me a bottle of Tequila. Plus she was so upset that she was going so her ass better come back here!

*That got Jay to laugh a bit, looking down at his desk as he smiled, remembering the bet that Melissa lost one day when they were all Tailgating a few months before, she had yet to pay up.*

Jay: Yeah, she does. I remember she was all distraught, Thanks, Serge.

Trudy: Anytime

Trudy: Goodnight Chuckles.* She joked, and then she was gone.*

*Jay set the box to the side, no longer feeling like eating. His stomach was in knots.

He returned to his previous position, pouring over the files once again. He couldn't figure out what he was missing.*

He caught sight of his phone on his desk, making a split-second decision and calling his girl. She answered on the third ring.

Melissa; * smiles * Hey Baby!

Jay: Hey baby

*He said, just enjoying hearing her voice for a moment. He snapped out of it*

Jay: How's working with the feds?

*Is it wrong that a small part of him wanted her to say that she hated it?*

Melissa: * sighs and fakes happiness* I hate it

Jay: You okay? * it made him happy to hear she hated it.*

* Melissa inhales and exhales and tries to fake happiness some more.*

Melissa: Sure! * lies*

*Jay heard a door click over the line. *

Melissa; Actually, you have great timing. I was getting off the elevator when you called me.

*Jay glanced at the clock on his monitor, it read 12:04 am.*

Jay: Damn, that's late babe.

Melissa: Yeah, that is how they roll out here in New York with the FBI! What's up?

* Suddenly, Jay felt bad asking her for help, she had just finished her day and she probably needed sleep.*

Melissa; Jay? Baby?

Jay: Oh, uh, I was just gonna ask for your opinion on a case, but you need sleep. I'll let you-

Melissa; No babe * she said cutting him off*

Melissa; I'm wired, I won't be able to sleep, it's been a crazy night. plus I miss you like crazy and what do you need babe?

*Great. A crazy night. They were probably doing a big raid or something else with their big budget and fancy tech stuff. Melissa was probably really good at it.*

Jay: I just can't find the connection between the stores in this string of robberies. People are dying, we're running out of time.

Melissa; Do you have the digital files?

Jay: Yeah.

Melissa: Alright, send them to me. I'll call you back.

*Jay did what he was told and not even five minutes later, she called him back. But this time, it was a Facetime notification.

Jay cautiously slid it open, immediately taking in Melissa's appearance. She had her phone propped up facing her as she sat on a bed in a pair of shorts and a t-shirt with her computer in her lap.*

Jay: Hey baby!

*Jay said, propping his up on his monitor.*

Melissa; Hey Babe. I love seeing your face I miss you so much!

*She said back, smiling her big, bright, Melissa smile that he missed so much.

It had only been four days, he really needed to pull it together. They stared at each other for a moment, before Melissa got serious for a moment.*

Melissa; So, run me through the facts.

*So he did, he talked her through the case while she looked through photos and reports.

Jay was hoping that he would think of something as he explained it all, but he didn't. After a few minutes of silence, Melissa spoke up,*

Melissa; Did you check the security companies?

Jay: Yeah, they all use different ones.

Melissa; * Thinks a little more * Wait, check and see if there is some sort of backing. Like a mother company or something.

*Jay typed for a while before shouting,*

Jay: Bingo!

*He smiled at her through the phone.*

Jay: Melissa baby, you got it. They are all financed partially by Graham Consolidated, a big tech company.

Melissa; Nice babe! Perfect, so what do you think? A personal vendetta against the CEO/Company and they are coming after its partners? Maybe it's Graham's way of completely taking over the smaller companies?

*Melissa said, throwing out ideas. Jay shrugged, a smile still on his face.*

Jay: I don't know, but now I have a place to start. Thank you.

Melissa; * nods* of course.  I really miss you guys, I wasn't kidding when I said I hate it here. * she wipes her tears away.*

Jay: * looks at his girl with concern not liking that she is sad.* We miss you too but I really miss you, babe!

*Melissa cried a little more and shrugged, trying to find the words.*

Melissa; it's just more structured. So serious-

*She stopped for a moment and then she then spoke truthfully.*

Melissa; Jay I am seriously trying over here but I hate every moment of it.

Jay: have you really given it a chance?

Melissa: * nods* I want to come home I miss you and I miss Chicago and everything!

Jay: it's only been four days baby *Jay smiled weakly*

Melissa; Please come get me and take me home like you promised?

Jay: They are lucky to have you babe! *He said, genuinely.*

Melissa; * cries for a moment before responding. * I don't want to be here anymore Jay.

*She said softly, looking a little disappointed.

she wanted him to tell her that she better come home!

she wanted him to tell her he couldn't live without her!

No way, he couldn't.

A job with the FBI is a big deal, and Melissa was definitely on the path of being offered one.

He couldn't get in the way of that. *

Jay: You really are miserable huh baby?

Melissa; Yes, Please promise me you will keep your promise?

Jay: Baby, I love you!

Melissa; I love you too!

Jay: Have you gone sightseeing?

Melissa; NO!

Jay: You are in the land of Sex and The City!

Melissa; Yeah and I hate it!

Jay: Baby try and get some sleep, okay baby?

Melissa: Please come take me home I miss Chicago!

Jay: * smiles* I will promise me one more day?

Melissa; Fine but know I truly hate it!

*They hang up and Melissa holds the teddy bear Jay gave her and tries to go to sleep she can't sleep till she cries herself to sleep looking at the SD card Mouse gave her and the photos on her phone of her and Jay.

Erin came home and found Melissa asleep with her phone in her hand and her teddy bear in her other hand.

When Erin saw Melissa's phone she saw the pictures of Melissa and Jay and felt bad Melissa's experience in New York was not a good one.

She was hoping that Jay would come and take her home like Melissa said he promised her he would.

Erin thought about calling Jay. Then she just picked up the phone and called Jay from Melissa's phone.*

Jay: Hey baby what's up?

Erin: Hey Jay it's Erin.

Jay: What are you doing with MY girl's phone? * joking*

Erin: * laughs a small laugh* She is asleep and she is miserable here.

Jay: She told me.

Erin: You need to come get her and bring her back to Chicago.

Jay: She told me but I told her to try to stick it out one more day!

Erin: I get it you're trying to be supportive.

Jay: I just want to make sure she makes her own decisions.

Erin: I love that about you but honestly, Melissa is not happy at all she hasn't been since she got here.

Jay: Explain cause she dosen't tell me much!

Erin: She only does the work she is not social and she feels so uncomfortable around here.

Jay: She said you guys are all assholes.

Erin; Yeah we kinda are.

Jay: You're supposed to be her best friend!

Erin: Yup and I think I am doing the right thing calling my best friend's boyfriend to tell him she is not happy.

Jay: I wish she would have told me.

Erin: she would be happier in Chicago with her people!

Jay: she went shopping.

Erin: she cried going shopping with me.

Jay: my Melissa. She loves to go shopping.

Erin: She has done nothing but cry herself to sleep every night she has been here!

Jay: She hasn't gone sight seeing?

Erin: She shopped for her dress and other stuff but then that was it.

Jay: Wow! I wish she would have told me.

Erin: Well she is trying to stick it out but she is drowning!

Jay: Why can't you help her?

Erin: I tried but it just makes it worse for her.

Jay: So my girl is just miserable?

Erin: Yeah, she is acting so polar opposite of how she is supposed to be.

Jay: I will try to get out there as soon as I can I will bring her home.

Erin: Thanks Jay. She really needs to go home!

* Jay and Erin hang up and then he decideds he needs to go home and get some sleep and then once he is home he takes a shower and then shoots Melissa a text he knows she is asleep but he wanted her to wake up to this text. *

Jay: I am coming to get you don't worry baby! I love you! 💕😘❤️

DAY FIVE

Will: damnit  Jay, your body is not bulletproof.

*Will said, pressing the bandage flush against his brother's arm.*

*Jay rolled his eyes, sighing,*

Jay: It barely grazed me, there won't even be a scar...

*Will huffed, standing straighter and glaring at his brother, he looked at Kim who was standing in the corner of the room.*

Will: Hey Mouse and  Kim, when was the last time Jay got shot?

*Kim feigned inquiry, tapping her chin with her finger. *

Kim: Oh, I don't know, not even six months ago?

*She said, a bit too aggressively.*

Jay: You guys are being dramatic. I'm fine.

*Jay insisted.*

Mouse: Melly Bean is gonna be upset!

Kim: JAY I PROMISED MELISSA YOU WOULD NOT GET HURT!

Will: Jay!

Jay: Will!

Will: You have gotten shot twice in the past six months. Three times in two years! That's not normal!

*He was obviously frustrated, running his hand through his hair. He didn't understand what Jay didn't get, they were all each other had.

Will: You're not bulletproof, you're like a damn bullet magnet.

*Jay held up his hands.*

Jay: Ok, now you're being ridiculous -

*He was cut off by his phone buzzing on the bed next to him, he picked it up glaring at his brother and temporary partner and Mouse. The ID read: My Girl Melissa Gonzalez.*

Jay: Which one of you told?

*He snapped. Will and Kim and Mouse the three of them held their hand up in surrender before backing out of the room to give Jay some privacy, neither of them had spilled the beans. Jay sighed, hitting the green button and answering.*

Jay: Hey. Baby!

*He was expecting her to scream at him, to be angry, but instead.*

Melissa: Jay? Baby You okay?

*She sighed out, Jay was taken aback.*

Jay: Yes beautiful, I'm okay."

*He heard her soft sniffles over the line.

Had she been crying?

He felt a pang of guilt in his chest at the thought.*

Melissa: I just got back to the office and I had a text from Adam that just said "Jay got shot" and he wasn't answering and all I could think about was last time, and -

*She stopped herself, taking a deep breath.*

Melissa; It doesn't matter, I-I was just worried.

Jay: I'm fine, I promise Baby please don't be upset!

* Jay said calmly, sensing her panic even 800 miles away. *

Melissa; Okay,

*She said, sounding defeated.*

Melissa; What happened ?

*Jay shrugged, immediately regretting it. He would never admit it out loud, but his arm was really sore.*

Jay: It was a run of the mill shoot out, I just jumped out of the way too slow. It just grazed my arm, there was barely any blood.

*That was a lie, there was a lot of blood. He had to change his clothes, they were pretty much ruined.

He wasn't sure what he was trying to do by omitting how bad it could have been, maybe he was protecting her, but he couldn't bear her blaming herself for this. He knew he would.

If he was stuck in New York and Melissa got hurt in Chicago without him there to back, he would blame himself too. *

Melissa; Which arm? *She asked quickly.*

Jay: Left.

* He sighed out, hoping that maybe she would ignore it.*

Melissa; Jay Alexander Halstead! *She shouted*

Jay: you saying my full name is still a turn-on even 800 miles away.

Melissa: You aren't even done with PT for your left shoulder !

Jay: Melissa!

*He said, only slightly mocking her.*

Jay: The bad guys don't have a copy of my line of duty injuries report.

*He heard her stifle a laugh and he smiled to himself.

He knew she wasn't really mad at him, she was just worried.

He would have reacted the exact same way. *

Melissa: seriously, you have to be more careful.

* Melissa was worried and she was missing Jay like crazy.*

Melissa; I don't know what I would do without you .

*Jay literally felt his heart stop in his chest.He didn't know what he would do without her either, and this was the closest he ever wanted to be to finding out. *

Jay: Melissa my love, I will always come back to you!

Melissa; Jay my love I will always come back to you!

Jay: Sometimes it may take me a little longer but I will always come back to you!

*That earned a soft laugh from her, causing a small smile to grace his face.*

*They sat there in silence for a while, finding comfort in only the assurance of the other one's presence.*

Melissa; Please Don't scare me like that again.

Jay: I won't Melissa.

Melissa: you promise?

Jay: I promise baby!

*Jay couldn't put his finger on it, but something about this felt different than the last time.

It seemed kind of ironic how they were having all of their important conversations that way now.

The words were different, but the rest was the same.

The pain in her voice, the fear, it made everything all too real.

It terrified him, because They needed eachother - she needed him just as much as he needed her.

He knew he needed to get his girl!

She worked on the case but was not able to remain focused. She did her best. She wasn't having much fun though. *

DAY SIX

*By the next night, Jay was so exhausted that he was sure he would fall asleep as soon as his head hit the pillow.

His arm was still sore and he had slept terribly the night before. The shooting, however minor it was, had done a number on him.

Nightmares of Melissa not coming home clouded his mind all night long.

He had just turned out his light when his phone buzzed on the bedside table, he silently prayed that they hadn't caught a case. When he flipped it over, he saw it wasn't from his boss, but from his girl.*

Melissa: Facetime?🥹🥹💋💋💋

*Jay was quick to hit the call button, all his tiredness being thrown out the window, but he would be a fool to waste her forwardness. She picked up on the first ring.*

Melissa; Eager aren't we?

Jay: I miss my sexy girl!

*Jay was going to say something clever back, but he was startled by how beautiful she looked in the lighting in the room she was in.

He reached over and switched his lamp on, pretending not to notice the look on Melissa's face when she realized he was shirtless. She bit her lip and smiled at Jay her gaze didn't shift away.*

Jay: See something you like, beautiful?

*Melissa bit her lip and nodded as she responded.*

Melissa; What if I say yes handsome?

*Jay smiled big. 800 miles away and his girl had an effect on him and he had an effect on her.*

Jay: Then I would tell you that I see something I like too.

*Melissa blushed and Jay's grin grew three sizes, he wanted to make that happen again, and again, and again.*

Melissa; DId I tell you I miss you?

Jay: Yes baby and I miss you too!

*Her expression softened when she noticed the bandage on his left arm*

Melissa; How's your arm baby?

*Jay shrugged*

Jay: Sore, but fine.

*She didn't look convinced.*

Jay: Melissa baby, look at me.

*She lifted her gaze from her lap, to his eyes on the screen.*

Jay: I will always come back to you!

Jay: Yeah she did! Why didn't you tell me it was really bad?

Melissa; You all told me to give it a try and So I have been but it is shitty over here.

Melissa; Have you planned on when you're coming to bring me home?

*Jay knew it was a loaded question, but he was practicing self preservation.*

Melissa; I need to come home, I can't be without you!

*Jay laughed out loud*

Jay: I can't be without you too! I am trying but as you see it's litterally painful without you here!

Melissa; Finally, it took you long enough.

*She said, joking with him. Jay blew her a kiss and then Melissa blew Jay a kiss back while rolling over on her side and resting her phone against the pillow next to her, he noticed she is wearing just a T-shirt. *

Jay: Damn baby!

Melissa: what?

Jay: I wish I was with you right now to grab your ass the way you're laying... Fuck!

Melissa: * giggles* I would want you to have your way with me.

Jay: oh fuck babe!

Melissa: I want your arms around me.

Jay: I want to hold you too.

*Jay smiled softly, giving her a small nod of understanding. He did know she missed him, and he missed her like crazy too. He looked into her beautiful brown eyes.*

Melissa; I tried to bring you with me and the whole crew FBI are assholes and said they only wanted me!

*He could tell he caught her off guard, the happy expression on her face said it all, He meant it with his whole heart. *

Melissa; Erin's great, but...but she's not you Jay.

*She shook her head, smiling softly to herself.*

Melissa; There's no one else like you.

*Jay's heart was pounding in his chest at her words, he was half convinced he was dreaming.*

Jay: Well that's good, there's only enough room for one partner in your life, and I intend on keeping the spot.

Melissa; You're it for me babe!

Melissa; I don't want anyone else.

Jay: I don't want anyone else either.In anyway

Melissa: Please Baby Come to New York.

*She said quickly, a nervous expression crossing her face for a split second as he watched her realize what she just said.

Jay cocked an eyebrow.*

Jay: What?

Melissa; Come to New York.

*She said again, this time with more confidence.*

Melissa; I miss my boyfriend! Please come to New York!

Jay: Are you sure?

Melissa: yes!

*He asked, and it felt like the simple question meant so much more. He just never had been in this territory before.*

Jay: Are you sure this is what you want?

Melissa: Yes!

Jay: Are you sure you want me there?

Melissa: Yes

Jay: Are you sure?

Melissa; Yes. Buy the ticket Jay.

Jay: this is unknown territory.

Melissa; I want you here with me!

Jay: Say less baby!

*They fell asleep on the face time call*

DAY SEVEN

*Jay felt like his heart was going to jump out of his chest as he walked to baggage claim.

The last 12 hours had been quite the whirlwind. He had texted Voight immediately while on FaceTime with Melissa asking for the next day off.

Thankfully he had said yes, and Jay booked the next flight that wasn't full. It left O'Hare at 12:15 the next day.

He couldn't believe what he was doing, flying to New York to see Melissa.

It had only been a week and he was buying an overpriced plane ticket?

He really did have it bad.

It wasn't lost on him how familiar the situation was, losing a partner, a friend, someone he loved to the city, to the FBI even.

He never bought a ticket to see Erin, not after a week, not after a month, never. The thought never really even crossed his mind. She was gone and that was that, time to move on. But not with Melissa.

Melissa was different, the thought of moving on, the thought of forgetting her ripped through him like a knife.

He wasn't sure he'd survive without her. And even though it had only been seven days, he was ecstatic to see her.

Jay: I have the most precious and important reason to come to New York.

Melissa: * smiles * now that you have it in your grasp. What do you do now?

Jay: * smiles and pulls Melissa into him.* take her back with me to Chicago our home.

Melissa: exactly right. FUCK NEW YORK!

Jay: Let's go before I take you right now on this bed and we miss our flight.

Melissa; I want to go home we are NOT missing our flight!

*Jay makes sure they have everything before they check out and then once they check out they take a cab to JFK and then head on their plane together to go to Chicago and hold hands the entire flight and smile.

Melissa was going home. She was with Jay and that was all that mattered to her. Once they arrived to Chicago in Ohare they got off the plane and then walked hand in hand and smiled when they were heading to Melissa's place in a cab.

Jay once he arrived with Melissa they headed into her place and she headed to her room and she smiled! There were rose petals everywhere. Jay smiled watching her reaction!

She grabbed her phone and sent a quick message while in his arms. Jay saw this and was going to say something when his phone goes off! He smiles when he reads the text.

Melissa; My hero ❤️💋❤️💋 I love you so much! Thank you for coming to my rescue and bringing me back home!

Jay smiles reading the text and then he sends a reply and then places his stuff down and walks over to Melissa.

Jay: I would do anything for you! I would rescue you anytime. You're the love of my life and my everything! Now being here makes sense with you! I love you!

Melissa reads her text from Jay and she smiles at him she wraps her arms around him and kisses him.

She was in love with Jay she knew it before she left but now she really was certain she loved him.

This is Jay after all. The guy who has seen her at her worst and she nursed back to health after he got shot.

The guy who knew that even though she went to New York they wouldn't steal his girl.But that's all they need; before she knows it he is sweeping her into his arms.

And instantly everything feels right in the world again.

Melissa nuzzles her face into his neck, and he happily lets her. Holding her as tight as he can, like he will never let her leave again.

The arms that she missed the most wrapped around her. She has never felt safer than right here in his arms.

Their eyes connect when they pull apart after another minute, one that both Melissa and Jay let linger.

Jay watches in confusion as Melissa takes her phone out and types a seemingly short message.

Not a second later, his own phone buzzes in his pocket. His eyes find Melissa's again, looking at Jay with those beautiful brown eyes he missed looking into.

He reaches for the device, confirming his suspicion when he sees an incoming message from his girl, now sporting a huge beautiful smile.

Jay opens the text; when he read the words on the glowing screen, he swears his heart skips a beat:

Melissa: I'm home. 🏠 ( with you my love) ❤️💋

He reads the words again for good measure. Letting his mind truly comprehend them:

My girl is actually home.

No, she chose to text them after his arms finally found their way around her petite curvy body again. After they'd hugged.

Jay visibly swallows, realizing the full depth of her message.

Jay: Yeah? *He asks out loud.

Melissa simply nods before crashing into his body again, wrapping her arms even tighter around him than she did before.

He smiles with feeling her lips on his neck how her face fits perfectly in the crook of his neck, as if it belongs there like a missing puzzle piece.

This feels right like things are back to the way they are supposed to and always should be.

With his best friend and partner and more importantly his girlfriend back in his embrace, Jay can finally release the breath it feels like he has been holding for the past seven days.

Jay places a gentle kiss on her lips and Melissa smiles into their kiss and takes the kiss deeper. *

Jay: Welcome home, Melissa!

Melissa: Thank you for showing me Fairytale can be reality!

Jay: I am going to keep on showing you!

Melissa; Please make me a believer!

Jay: I think you already are but I am happy to make you a believer!

Melissa; I just never want to be away from you ever!

Jay: Next time I will tell you no don't go!

Melissa; so if Washington wants me?

Jay: Hell No!

Melissa; Secret Service?

Jay: Not My Girl!

Melissa; * smiles* That is what I am talking about!

Jay: * smiles* You just want your boyfriend to say " I love you never leave me again please"

Melissa; something to that effect!

* Melissa and Jay were in an even better place than they were before. Being apart even though for seven days taught them something about themselves and as a couple they both are happiest when together!

They work better together !

They just make sense together!

Everything is right in the world when they are together!

Melissa felt she came home just in time for the holidays Thanksgiving was in a few weeks and she couldn't wait to be with her family.

she felt she had a whole lot to be thankful for and she would see Erinafter Thanksgiving all the way through the New Year! Melissa felt like things were going to be okay.

Jay was healing from being shot in the shoulder however she was okay that he was okay!

Gretchen and Mouse were moving right along nicely with their relationship! Gretchen loved working at Chicago Med and she couldn't wait to work more.

She was finding her way around perfectly! Melissa's father was going to permanently be home during the holidays and after.

Jay had a huge surprise planned for Melissa he was going to propose to her on New Year's Eve right on the boat ride at Midnight!

It was going to be perfect!

He couldn't wait!

He wanted to marry her!

Having their time in the honeymoon suite in New York only made it make sense even more!

He and Melissa wondered what else that good could happen.
