4: Can We talk?

*2009*
As it neared Barack's 100 days in office, He felt confident that he got a lot of things he wanted done. He spoke to all of the District Attorneys and listened to their plans. He truly felt accomplished.
Barack sat down at his desk picking up his black pen and twirling it in his fingers. There were a few things laid In front of him that he had to sign. He began signing his life away until his hand felt numb.
As he picked up a document to sign and felt out a post-it note that had a phone number on it. He glanced at it with a smile when he read the signature on it. 'Kamala D. Harris Personal Line'
He remembered the meeting he had with Kamala a few weeks ago. She had so many good ideas that he could see himself implementing. He then remembered their conversation before. In his mind, he thought they had started to get to know each other. And Quite frankly he's like to continue to get to know her. It wasn't a lie he was tied down to his wife since she left him and took their children with her.
Barack felt like enough time had passed since his wife walked out on him. It wouldn't hurt him to start moving on right? It wouldn't do any harm to pursue someone else when it looked like it was over.
Deep in Barack's mind he knew exactly what he wanted. Though he has known Kamala for years working alongside her on many different occasions. Something stirred in him when she broke down and let herself be vulnerable in his office. Yes, she was mourning the passing of her mother but he had never seen her be so human, And that is something that attracted him. Plus she's really pretty.
Barack quickly signed the document and then picked up the post-it note with the number that was left for him. For a moment he hesitated then picked up the phone. He dialed her number and once the phone started ringing his palms instantly got sweaty and his throat went dry.
In San Fransico with a three-hour time difference, Kamala was just finishing up her lunch. It was the only time she had to herself outside of her office and outside of the courthouse. Kamala was sitting at the nearby park letting the breeze of crisp spring air hit her.
She chewed the last bit of her turkey sandwich and felt her phone vibrate in her pocket. She let out a groan praying to god that it wasn't work. She had 15 more minutes of her break.
He pulled her phone out and saw that a private number calling. Her eyebrows lowered in confusion. She questioned herself if she should answer the phone. She watched it ring a few more times before deciding to press the green button "This Is Kamala Harris" She answered in her most professional she could muster up.
"Hi, Kamala. It's Barack" The president's voice ranged through the phone.
"Oh uh hi Mr. President," She said, shocked by this unexpected phone call.
"Please call me Barack, This isn't a professional call" He nervously chucked.
"It's not? What can I do for you?" She asked, wondering to herself why The president of The United States would be calling her at 1:30 in the afternoon.
Barack let out another nervous chuckle "Um i- Jeez I don't know how to say this it's been a while.
Kamala slightly smiled at him fumbling on his words. She thought it was kind of cute that whatever he was about to tell her he couldn't find the words for. "Okay?'
"So I uh was wondering if you'd be interested in coming back to the White House and having dinner with me?" He breathed out warry of what her response would be.
Kamala's eyes grew wide as she didn't know how to respond. "Oh um-"
"If you don't want to. That's okay" Barack said in a defeated tone thinking he's being rejected.
"Oh No!" She quickly said picking up on his tone. "I would love too!" She softly giggled.
In her mind, she didn't know if this was just dinner or if he was asking her out on a date. Part of her didn't mind being asked out on a date by Barack. She always thought he was a fine ass man but she would never disrespect someone's relationship so she never said anything.
Barack let out a sigh of relief. "How about Friday? I'll arrange for Air Force One to pick you up"
"That sounds like a plan" She replied with her cheeks heating up.
Silence fell on over the phone call. As both of them didn't know if they should end the call right there.
A car passing by the park where Kamala had been enjoying her lunch stopped at a red light behind her. Their music blasted Tevin Campbell's Can We Talk.
Barack could hear the music clear as day and began singing it in a low seductive tone "Can we talk for a minute girl I want to know your names"
Kamala blushed smiling ear to ear "Can We talk for a minute girl I want to know your name" She joined in singing the song.
The car was long gone and the two kept singing getting lost in the moment and ignoring the world around them.
Kamala's heart skipped a million beats when Barack began ad-libbing adding his own words and adding her name.
It was a moment that solidified the unspoken words they both felt but were too nervous to say....
*Kamala*
"Can we talk? For a minute, girl, I want to know your name," Kamala and Kamryn sang to each other in unison as Tevin Campbell performed his song "Can We Talk."
They danced together enjoying the music and tuning out the world around them. Kamala loved sharing moments like this with her daughter. And when it came to this song it was a song that was special to Kamala for the simple fact that if it wasn't for this song she probably wouldn't be a mother. Kamala harbored so many good memories behind this song but also held some bad memories for her that she spent years trying to suppress.
As the song came to an end the crowd cheered loudly. When Kamala looked up there was a camera in front of her that captured the mother/daughter duo in their almost matching outfits. Kamala Wore a pink pantsuit and Kamryn wore the same shade of pink teeshirt sun dress.
The MC of the show got on the stage "Alright I see you Vice President Harris turning up with your baby!"
She laughed placing her hand over her heart. People always loved Seeing her with her daughter especially when they were carefree.
Once the show ended and Kamala did a few interviews they headed home.
Walking into the house Kamryn went straight to her room because she began to feel six and she could let Charles see any signs that she was pregnant.
Charles emerged from the kitchen throwing a towel over his shoulder. "How was the benefit concert?"
"It was really good. You should've gone with us" She said with a smile trying to push yesterday's argument to the back of her mind.
Charles slightly scoffed "I didn't want to"
Kamala sighed "It would have been nice for you to come. Be supportive of me for once" She said with a slight attitude in her voice. It irked Kamala sometimes that Charles wouldn't bend for her.
Charles arched an eyebrow looking at her intently "Support you? Support the most powerful woman in the world. How am I supposed to do that?"
"I don't know maybe hold the fuking bible for me while I'm getting sworn into office" Kamala said in frustration and throwing up her hands. She still felt a bit of bitterness from three and a half years ago, When he refused to stand up and hold her bible as she was sworn in as vice president.
"Why would I do that? So I can be seen as the Vice President's little bitch!" He raised his voice. Letting it be hinted that his ego was bruised.
"Wow" Kamala said in disbelief. "You know what this conversation is over and I'm leaving"
"That's just like you, to up and leave when you don't like what I have to say" He retorted.
Kamala ignored him and began walking out of the living room. In a quick movement, Charles walked up behind her grabbing her wrist tightly and stopping her. "Don't walk away from me"
Kamala looked at him as if he had lost his mind "Charles get off of me" She said in a flat tone masking the anger that was beginning to bubble inside her.
He held her wrist tighter as he just stared at her No words were spoken between them but they both knew exactly what each other was saying. Kamala knew Charles was intimidated by her job title and the power she held, But She chose to ignore it and hoped that he would eventually come around.......
*Barack*
Barack walked into the white house to have a meeting with his good friend Joe Biden. Joe wanted to speak with Barack so that the white house could team up with his Obama foundation to get some things in motion.
The buzz in the White House was steady but yet busy. Something Barack missed since he had been in office and something he enjoyed whenever he visited.
As he walked through the west wing he noticed the door to the Vice President's office slightly cracked.
For a moment he questioned himself if he should stop by and say hi. It had been a few days since he talked to Kamala, He called her about wanting to spend time with Lo Lo and there was something about Kamala's tone on that call that didn't seem to sit right with him.
He motioned to his secret service man that he was taking a quick stop. He walked up to the door and heard Kamala's voice talking about how she couldn't believe something was happening and something was so cute. He knocked on the door and then pushed it open.
Kamala and her Assistant froze. Kamala with what looks like a sonogram in her hand blinked then quickly shoved the piece of paper into her Assistant's hand "Tabby I can't wait for your baby to come!"
Her assistant raised her eyebrow then quickly caught on with a slight nod. "Uh Thank you for being so supportive. I'm going to step out"
Her assistant quickly walked out of her office, Kamala sat down at her desk "Barack what are you doing here?"
He stepped further into her office "I have a meeting with Joe. I thought I stop by and say hi"
"Oh well hi" She gave him a slight smile.
"How was the benefit show?" He asked trying to strike up a conversation with her.
Kamala's facial expression quickly changed "It was a good show. Me and Kammy had a lot of fun"
"Just you and Lo lo? Your man didn't go?" He playfully teased.
"No, He was busy" She said flatly. "Don't you have a meeting you need to get to?" She asked raising her eyebrow.
"Yeah I do" He chuckled. "One more thing. Can I see Lo Lo tonight? or tomorrow?" He asked hoping he could actually spend time with his daughter since His wife was leaving for a trip with her sisters.
"Shit" Kamala snapped her finger "I'm sorry Barack. She didn't fly back home with me yesterday" She stated.
"What do you mean she didn't fly back home with you?" Barack questioned with a hint of agitation in his voice.
Kamala leaned forward placing her elbows on her desk "She wanted to stay back in Los Angeles with my sister and with Charles for a few days"
Instantly hearing that Lo Lo would rather stay back in California with a man who's not her father instead of spending time with her actual father. "Why would let her stay with him" He crossed his arms.
"Because she asked. And technically she's with my sister. But if Charles chooses to hand out with her during that time then that is his choice." She shrugged her shoulders.
"He's not her daddy" Barack scoffed with a hint of jealousy in his voice.
Kamala smirked, She could see that it bothered him that another man with his daughter and he wasn't. "She knows Charles isn't her father. But he is always there for her" She said in amusement.
"I told you I'm trying to be there for her more. You haven't been letting me"
"Trust me it's not me who isn't letting you be there for Kammy" Kamala said with a bit of a chuckle to her voice.
Barack shifted pressing his lip into a line. "You closed the door in my face remember?"
Kamala playfully rolled her eyes "Because she was sick with the flu Barack"
"Mhm," He cocked his head to the side. "So what about after?"
"We had been busy" She quickly shot out trying to avoid the real reason she couldn't let Barack see Kamryn.
"Yeah okay Sunny" He said letting the nickname he once used to call her slip out of his mouth before he could stop himself.
Unexpectedly that quick slip of the tongue caught Kamala off guard. Her breath hitched getting caught in her throat.
Barack bit his when he realized what he said. Sunny was the name he started calling her because she smiled and laughed so much that it just brightened the room. To him, she had a smile the darkest days seemed sunny. There for the was the name he only called her.
Before Barack could speak again Kamala pointed at the slightly unknowingly exposing her wrist that had a faint bruise on it "Go to your meeting"
Barack noticed her wrist but didn't want to make any assumptions. He threw up his hands "Alright I'll go. But when Lo lo comes back home I want to see her"
"You go it" Kamala said with a smile.
Barack turned to to leave but was stopped "Hey Bam, Stop barging into my office" Kamala said with a slight flirtation in her voice. Calling Barack the nickname she had given him so many years ago.
Barack smiled hearing her call him Bam after years. He didn't respond he just walked out of her office and headed down to the Oval to have his meeting. Barack would've been lying to himself if he said that didn't stir some hidden feelings he had tucked away for years.
The meeting with Joe went great but the entire time Barack's mind only kept slipping to Kamala. He didn't anticipate the effect that Kamala calling him Bam would have on him. It unlocked. a moment in time when she was the absolute most important person in his life. Every smile and every tear they spent together played repeatedly in his mind.
The thought of how they ended always left a scar on his heart. He forever wished he could take back the things he said. Choosing Brenda over her was his biggest regret. He never truly apologized to her.
When the meeting was over Barack found himself walking through the west wing just chatting with Joe about random things. As they walked past the Vice President's office Barack noticed a familiar tune coming from her office.
Tevin Campbell's can we talk playing. It hit Barack in the chest like a bullet. He felt like the universe was playing a joke on him. First, it's the slip of the nicknames now it's the song they shared that kick-started their relationship and created the beautiful girl they have together.
A faint smile appeared on his face as he started humming the song. Part of him wanted to go into her office but he chose against it. He just let those memories continue to play in his mind.....
