Chapter 20✨
10:40, 6 September 2021After a good night's sleep, everyone finally assembled in the dining room for breakfast. Raina decided to go back to her room and do her hair. She finally pinned it up and admired herself in the mirror.
The events of the previous night came back to her, as she blushed to herself. The boy she spent the past two years denying feelings for, actually reciprocated it and not to mention, their kiss in the battle was her first. As Raina looked in the mirror, her eyes widened at the sight of her red cheeks. She decided to quickly throw some water on her face, and make her way to the dining room.
As she walked down, it became apparent to her that she was lost. She noticed a castle servant a few ways away.
'Hi, good morning! Could you please help me find the dining room. I'm lost.' She said in a small voice. The woman looked at Raina as her eyes widened.
'What's wrong? Is there something on my face?' Raina asked, worriedly.
'No, no, Your Excellency. It's just, you look very beautiful.' The woman said, kindly.
'Oh! That's so kind of you to say, thank you!' Raina replied, shyly.
'Oh yes, the dining room. Follow me, Your Excellency.' The woman beckoned Raina down the hallway and stopped in front of a set of doors.
'Go right on in, Your Excellency.' The woman said.
'Thank you so much! Oh, what's your name?' Raina asked.
'Genevieve, Your Excellency.' She said to Raina.
'Thank you so much, Genevieve. Have a lovely day!' Raina chirped as Genevieve bowed to her, and went about her way.
Raina began to feel nervous. She had these bouts of nervousness involving social situations fairly often. She was an introvert by nature, and now all she really wanted was to hide in her room and read Pride and Prejudice. She peeped through a crack in the doors, and found everyone already seated, except for her. Susan wore a gorgeous dark blue gown with intricate detailing on the top. Lucy wore a pink and white gown that suited her very well. Peter wore a navy blue tunic with grey pants and black boots, while Caspian wore a grey tunic and brown pants with black boots as well.
Raina's gaze landed on Edmund who was wearing a black and grey tunic with grey pants and black boots. His hair was messy, as usual, and somehow in the morning sunlight, looked even more handsome than usual. She couldn't help but blush.
Raina took a deep breath as she opened the doors and walked in. All eyes turned to Raina, as silence prevailed for a few moments. Jaws dropped, eyes widened, shock ensued. Raina eyed everyone with a squint.
'What?' She asked, bluntly.
Lucy spoke up.
'Raina you look so beautiful, oh my god! Doesn't she, Ed?'
Edmund's jaw was still hanging, as everyone snickered. Lucy placed two fingers under his chin and pushed it up.
'You're drooling, Edmund. It's not proper.' Lucy mused, as Ed glared at her.
'Lu's right, you know. You look gorgeous, Raina.' Susan said, as Raina shyly looked down.
'You clean up well, that's for sure.' Peter mused as Raina walked over to him and whacked his arm.
'Wish I could say the same for you.' Raina shrugged as Peter threw a playfully offended look her way.
'You look radiant, Raina. Truly.' Caspian spoke. As Raina turned to him, she smirked and he looked away. Raina chuckled to herself, recalling his antics earlier that morning.
Raina walked over to the only available seat, next to Edmund. He smiled at her as she sat down.
'So.' Peter began, leaning forward and steepling his fingers, and eyeing Raina and Edmund.
'So..?' Edmund asked.
'When, where, why, what, how?' Peter said, simply.
'Oh lord..' Raina said to herself.
After relaying everything that happened between her and Edmund, Peter just let out a laugh, as he shook his head.
'You guys had to kiss in the middle of the battle? Seriously?' Peter asked, amused.
'Hey, I thought we were going to die, alright?' Edmund defended.
'And I made up for it. You know shockwaves, gold light, healing powers, trees coming to life?' Raina rambled.
Edmund wordlessly entwined his fingers with Raina's under the table, as butterflies made their way to Raina's stomach. She looked up at him, and found him smiling to himself. Raina shook her head at him.
Everyone laughed heartily. Breakfast was served as everyone ate in silence, initially because of not having eaten for a while. After some time, Caspian spoke up.
'Alright, I have some matters to attend to for our Coronation this week..' He gestured to Raina. 'So you are all free to explore the castle.'
'Yes, I would love to see more of this place! I figured the last time we came here we didn't really get the premium tour, now did we?' Raina said sarcastically, as Caspian laughed. After finishing breakfast, he got up and left the room with some of his advisors, leaving Raina and the Pevensies in the room.
'So, what do you all want to do?' Susan asked.
Edmund clasped Raina's hand before speaking.
'We're going to tour the castle.' He said, hurriedly, as he practically dragged Raina out the door, as everyone else laughed. Raina could faintly make out Lucy saying,
'I really don't think I want to become an aunt this early..'
Raina shook it off as Edmund led her down the hall, and into the courtyard. Once he was convinced that his siblings were far enough away, he turned to Raina with a coy smile.
'Hi.' He said, prompting a giggle from Raina.
'Hi.' She replied.
'Did you sleep well?'
'Yes, what about you?'
'Me too.'
The two teenagers shyly looked down, neither meeting each other's gaze.
'This is weird.' Raina blurted out. 'Nothing has changed, has it?'
'Well, I mean..' Edmund said, coyly causing Raina to whack his arm.
'Ow, what was that for?'
Raina just smiled innocently.
'Let's take a walk.' She spoke.
They walked out of the castle, and onto the fields. There was a warm breeze blowing, and flowers stretched as far as the eye could see. It was truly an image out of a romantic novel.
Raina grabbed Edmund's hand as she used her power to fly them forward, the wind blowing against their faces.
'WOOHOOOOOO!' Edmund yelled this time. Raina turned to him, shocked and amused.
'Finally. I was half expecting you to squeal like a baby.' She sassed.
'I am NOT a baby. You're a baby. You're small enough.' Edmund retorted. They were roughly five feet above the ground. Raina smirked at him and dropped him. He fell on his bum in the field.
'OW! What the hell, Raina?! I could've died!' He screeched, as Raina laughed loudly.
'Overdramatic, much? I thought a King of Narnia would be less dramatic but oh well' She cocked an eyebrow.
'I am King of Narnia. King Edmund the Just.' He maintained, as Raina furrowed her eyebrows.
'The Just? I wonder what you did to earn that.' She commented. He shook his head at her.
Raina came back down to the ground, and lent a hand to Edmund, still on the ground. He smirked at her, as he pulled her down to him. She fell on his chest, as their faces were now less than two inches apart. Raina blushed furiously as she got up.
'Say, Caspian seemed a little off today, don't you think? A little skittish.' Edmund commented. Raina snorted to herself, a little too loudly.
'Hey, hello? What do you know?' He inquired. Raina had to put a hand to her mouth to stop laughing.
'You really haven't noticed how he looks at Susan, have you?' She mused. Edmund scrunched up his face.
'Seriously? You haven't? Not even now? Wow, are all boys this daft?' She asked, exasperated. Edmund gave her a weird look, as they sunk into a comfortable silence, laying on the field, basking in the morning sun.
'Hey, Raina?'
'Yeah?'
Edmund sat up, and looked down at Raina still lying down, her eyes shut.
'All jokes apart, Raina, do you want to...you know...' Edmund trailed off, blushing. Raina opened her eyes and looked at Edmund, thoroughly amused.
'Are you asking me out, Edmund Pevensie?' She asked, her eyebrow cocked.
Edmund laughed, as he tucked a loose strand of her hair behind her ear.
'I believe I just did, Raina Laurel.' He smirked. This time, Raina blushed furiously. It was something about the way he said her name that gave her a bad kind of butterflies.
'Well...' Raina dragged it out, exaggeratedly, as Edmund flashed an offended expression. She sat up and faced him.
'I'd love to.' She said, softly. Edmund smiled widely as he wrapped his arms around her, and kissed her forehead. She buried her head in his chest, trying to hide the dark blush on her cheeks. When she pulled away, he placed a hand on her face, and leaned in to kiss her, softly. It was brief, but it was very much the most perfect moment. As he pulled away, he smirked.
'You know, you never answered my question back during the battle.' He mused, as Raina looked at him, unamused.
'And what question would that be?' She asked, playing dumb. He smirked as he cupped her chin and leaned in.
'I'm a great kisser, aren't I?' He asked, in a low voice that gave Raina chills.
'Shut up.' Was all she said, before she swiftly leaned in and kissed him. Edmund was caught off guard but he sank into it. He wrapped his arms around Raina's waist, while her hands went to the back of his neck. He pulled away after a few moments, breathless and stared into Raina's eyes.
'You're full of surprises, aren't you?' He mused.
'Someone has got to keep you on your toes.' She shrugged.
