Part 15: Subtle Inquiries

Charlie approached the kitchen cautiously, her usual confidence replaced with a tentative edge. Alastor stood by the counter, humming an old tune as he poured himself a cup of coffee-an odd habit, considering he never actually drank it. His ever-present grin seemed even sharper in the warm light.

"Good evening, Charlie!" he greeted, his voice dripping with its usual exuberance. "To what do I owe the pleasure of your charming presence?"

Charlie smiled nervously, her hands clasped tightly in front of her. "Hi, Alastor. I just wanted to... check in. See how things are going with Audrey."

His grin widened, if that were possible, and he chuckled. "Ah, my little darling is thriving, as always! A marvel of youth and vigor. Why, just yesterday, she managed to stack an entire tower of canned goods before they came tumbling down. A spirited child, wouldn't you agree?"

Charlie laughed awkwardly, unsure of how to segue into the question burning in her mind. "Yeah, she's... she's really..... something. You're doing a great job with her."

Alastor waved a hand dismissively. "Oh, nonsense! She's simply delightful all on her own. A gift, truly."

Charlie's heart raced. A gift? From where? She cleared her throat, trying to keep her tone light. "It's just... I've been wondering. Audrey's, uh, arrival was pretty... sudden. You know, one day she's not here, and then suddenly she's... part of the family."

Alastor's crimson eyes flicked to her, narrowing ever so slightly. "Ah, yes. A delightful surprise, wasn't it? Life is full of little miracles."

Charlie tilted her head, feigning innocence. "Right, but... it's kind of strange, isn't it? I mean, no one really saw her arrive. It's almost like she just appeared out of nowhere."

Alastor's smile didn't falter, but his gaze sharpened. "Children are full of surprises, Charlie. That's part of their charm. Don't you agree?"

Her palms began to sweat, but she pressed on, careful not to push too hard. "Of course! It's just that... well, I was curious if maybe she has a mother? Or if she-"

"Charlie," Alastor interrupted smoothly, his voice as sweet and dangerous as honey laced with poison. "Some questions are best left unanswered, wouldn't you say?"

The air seemed to grow heavier, the room suddenly colder despite the cheerful hum of the kitchen appliances. Charlie forced a smile, realizing she'd hit a nerve.

"Of course," she said quickly, her voice slightly strained. "I didn't mean to pry. I was just... you know, curious."

Alastor's grin returned to its usual cheerful sharpness, but his eyes lingered on her a moment too long. "Curiosity, my dear, is a double-edged blade. Be careful not to cut yourself."

Charlie swallowed hard, nodding as she took a step back. "Right. Well, I should get going. Thanks for the chat!"

"Anytime, my dear!" Alastor replied, his tone once again jovial. "Do let me know if you ever need anything... within reason."

As Charlie left the kitchen, her mind raced. Alastor's evasiveness only deepened the mystery surrounding Audrey. She knew she'd have to tread carefully, but one thing was clear-there was far more to Audrey's story than Alastor was willing to share.
