a rare moment of panic
19:22, 12 December 2024Part 11: A Rare Moment of Panic
The Hazbin Hotel was alive with the usual hustle and bustle—staff running errands, the faint sound of laughter echoing from the dining area. Alastor was seated in his usual place, watching over the hotel's daily operations, his sharp eyes scanning the room. Audrey, his ever-bubbly daughter, was sitting at the nearby table, happily munching on some snacks he'd prepared for her. She was always such a joy to have around, an innocence in the chaos of Hell.
But today, something was different. Audrey was far more energetic than usual, bouncing in her chair as she excitedly chattered about her day. Her tiny hooves kicked against the chair, and she giggled as she spoke, oblivious to the potential danger her antics were causing.
In a sudden, almost comical twist of fate, Audrey leaned too far back in the chair, the legs of it tipping precariously. Time seemed to slow as the chair teetered on the edge, and Audrey, still unaware, kept talking.
Alastor's eyes widened in horror, his ever-present smile faltering as he watched the chair begin to fall. For a split second, it seemed like the world had stopped—Alastor, usually so composed, was utterly panicked. His usual calm, collected demeanor had been shattered in an instant, his mind racing as he lunged forward in a desperate bid to catch his daughter.
Before Audrey could hit the ground, Alastor's long, slender arms shot out with terrifying speed, his fingers gripping the back of the chair. He stopped the fall with ease, his heart pounding in his chest. His face, usually blank or filled with amusement, was now painted with genuine concern as he steadied the chair, breathing a sigh of relief.
Audrey blinked up at him, her big, red eyes wide. "Daddy? Why'd you look so worried?"
Alastor's smile returned, though it was smaller, more strained than usual. He straightened himself, his hands brushing his coat as if nothing had happened. "Oh, my dear, you simply startled me. Do be careful," he said, his voice still carrying its usual cheerfulness, but with a layer of protectiveness that wasn't often seen.
Audrey giggled, completely oblivious to the rare moment of panic that had just unfolded. She grabbed another snack and continued her chatter, her hooves tapping lightly against the floor as she chewed.
Vaggie, who had been watching from a distance, raised an eyebrow in surprise. "Did Alastor just... panic?"
Charlie, who had been talking to Vaggie, glanced over to see the scene. She couldn't help but smile. "I think he did. That was unexpected."
Vaggie smirked, shaking her head. "Guess he really does care about that kid."
Alastor, still watching Audrey, quickly regained his usual demeanor, his smile widening. "Careful, darling," he called, though there was a distinct note of concern in his voice. "We wouldn't want you to ruin your lovely dress, now, would we?"
It was a small moment, but for anyone watching, it was a rare glimpse into the fierce, protective side of Alastor—one that few ever got to see. And for the first time in a long time, it was clear that he was not just the manipulative, power-hungry demon that he presented to the world. He was a father, fiercely protective of the one person who meant more to him than anything else.
