part 2 - i cant come up with a title
09:30, 12 December 2024Audrey, perched on a high-backed chair that almost swallowed her small frame. Spread before her was an array of dishes that could rival a royal banquet. Plates of chicken, bowls of gumbo, beignets (minus the powdered sugar, of course), and even a strange casserole made of venison and pine nuts. It was a feast fit for king—or, rather, one very spoiled daughter of a certain dapper demon.
Alastor, his ever-present grin wider than usual, hovered nearby with an air of exaggerated delight. "Oh, Audrey, my dear! You simply must try the jambalaya next! A recipe straight from the old days—spiced to perfection!" He leaned over, placing a heaping plate of the dish in front of her.
Audrey looked up, her face lighting up with excitement. "Thanks, Daddy!" she chirped, digging in with gusto.
Charlie and Vaggie stood near the doorway, watching the scene unfold. Vaggie's expression was a mix of exasperation and disbelief, while Charlie looked a little uneasy.
"Is this... normal?" Charlie whispered, her voice tinged with concern.
Vaggie shot her a glare. "Nothing Alastor does is normal."
Charlie shrugged, but her eyes stayed fixed on the spectacle. Audrey was eating at an almost alarming rate, her hooves tapping against the chair legs as she reached for another plate of food. Alastor, meanwhile, seemed to be in his element.
"Ah, and don't forget the cornbread!" Alastor said, pulling a fresh tray from thin air. "You can't have gumbo without cornbread, my sweet!"
"Daddy, you're the best cook ever!" Audrey declared through a mouthful of food.
Alastor chuckled, his voice rich and smooth like a radio broadcast. "Naturally, my dear. Only the best for you."
Vaggie finally snapped, stepping into the room with her hands on her hips. "Alastor, what are you doing? She's just a kid—you're going to make her sick with all this food.."
Alastor turned to her, his grin unwavering. "Nonsense, Vaggie! A growing girl needs her sustenance. Besides," he added with a wink, "she's my daughter. She can handle it."
Vaggie gestured wildly at the absurd spread of food. "Handle it? She's eaten enough for an army! Don't you think you're overdoing it just a little?"
Audrey looked up from her plate, crumbs clinging to her cheeks. "It's okay, Miss Vaggie. Daddy says I have a big appetite!"
Alastor nodded proudly. "Indeed, she does. A trait she no doubt inherited from me."
Vaggie pinched the bridge of her nose, muttering under her breath. "She's going to inherit an upset stomach, that's what."
Charlie, meanwhile, took a tentative step forward. "Alastor, I know you love her, but maybe Vaggie has a point. Kids shouldn't eat this much, should they?"
Alastor waved a hand dismissively. "Oh, piffle! Audrey's perfectly fine. Aren't you, my dear?"
Audrey nodded enthusiastically, her cheeks puffed out like a squirrel's. "Yep! I feel great!"
Charlie exchanged a worried glance with Vaggie, but before they could say more, Alastor clapped his hands.
"Now, Audrey, I've saved the best for last," he said, summoning a towering parfait layered with bitter chocolate mousse, black cherries, and a sprinkling of dark cocoa powder. "No sugar, of course. I know how you hate sweet things."
Audrey's eyes widened with delight. "Wow, Daddy, that looks amazing!"
Vaggie groaned. "You're seriously giving her more food?"
"Why, of course," Alastor said smoothly. "A happy child is a well-fed child. Isn't that right, Audrey?"
"Right!" Audrey chimed, already halfway through the parfait.
Charlie sighed, stepping back toward the doorway. "Well, at least she's happy," she murmured.
Vaggie threw her hands up in defeat. "Fine, but you deal with her if she ends up feeling sick later, Alastor. I'm not cleaning that up."
Alastor's laugh echoed through the dining hall, rich and theatrical. "Oh, don't worry, my dear Vaggie. Audrey is tougher than she looks."
As if on cue, Audrey finished the parfait, letting out a contented sigh. "Daddy, can we have more venison tomorrow?"
"Anything for you, my darling," Alastor replied with a bow.
Charlie and Vaggie exchanged a final look, one that said everything they needed to say without words.
